Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (and why you shouldnt write it off)
Okay, I just did a search for charlie and the chocolate factory, and this board has been bashing the remake for about a year now, in multiple threads.
Having actually seen it, I have to say I was rather impressed. I guess the most important thing to note is that I wasn't a huge fan of the original. It's fine, but I don't consider it great, and flip past it when it's on tv. There are some pretty big changes (lots of willy wonka flashbacks), all new songs (thank god, im more familiar with the futurama/family guy oompa loompa parodies than the real songs), no "floating scene", no acid trip on the boat, stuff like that. I should also mention I think Depp is one of the best actors alive, so I always give him the benefit of the doubt. The screening, though, was very split. Half the place was laughing a lot, the others weren't. So I guess you are either on board, or you aren't. The most interesting thing to me was the movie had heart. The beginning to me was downright sad, even though you know what will happen. You lose the heart once you get to the factory, but there really isn't time for any sappy moments when youve got to blow a girl up into a blueberry. That's as spoiler free as I can make it. I really enjoyed it, having never read the book, and being slightly freaked out by the original. Oh, and Elfman's score is so damn good...even better than Edward Scissorhands, which I've always held in the highest regard. |

I haven't seen anything yet, either in the trailers or sundry comments about the movie, that is going to overcome my reservations enough to see this on the big screen. I'll hold off and rent it on DVD, or maybe wait for it to hit the various movie channels.

It still looks like Michael Jackson's Chocolate Factory.

I saw a trailer tonight where one of the kids grabbed him around the legs and hugged him, and he looked a little freaked out, like "why is this little runt touching me?" That made me feel a little better. Not much, but a little. |

I think Johnny Depp is greatly overrated.

The biggest reason I think Depp is a good actor is that all his characters are characters. While you may look at Wonka or Jack Sparrow and say "Oh, that's Depp", you don't look at Wonka and say "Oh, that's Jack Sparrow". His characters, to me, are very distinct. |

I think Johnny Deep is a very good actor. I can't remember any movie he made I don't like...

Anyway, please tell me about Finding Neverland??? What a completely hyped up piece of Shit this thing turned out to be. And, I hated the fact that Depp's acting ability seemed to have been tied down for this movie. Again, Finding Neverland and Johny Depp were completely off the mark for this movie. I would of loved to of seen Jack Sparrow show up and entertain me. God, this movie sucked!!! |

Yeah Finding Neverland was very, very good, I felt. I watched it, then watched it again immediately, great acting by Depp and a very well written story. I was worried it would make Barrie come off as weird to be so involved in the boy's lives, but it came off well.

I agree. Given his background and how he got into movies, I think he's a pretty cool story and has done well for himself. He's obviously done roles that I don't think if you took another actor and said "here is your dossier of films" that it would've fit them. He does a nice range of work and even if I don't get into those films, I respect the work he puts in for exactly the reason you said.

it is 1 guy, indeed. they are really only around for the songs (but we do get a flashback to see where they came from). i think thats more tim burton's fascination with everything being synchronized, more than anything else. i cant honestly say the movie would have been the least bit better or worse if they were played by multiple characters. |

I went to see it last night. I loved the original, but this version was better. The ending was much, much stronger. Depp's Wonka had a creepiness that Wilder's didn't, and that added to the character. Charlie's whole family is a bigger part of the movie.
As for this: Quote:
it worked really well. There were moments in the movie where it was obvious the humor was playing off the fact that all the Oompa Loompas looked identical. Normally, I think remakes of classic movies are a bad idea, but in this case, the result was something significantly better. |

CNN gave it a great review and actually said it was a great family movie. It doesn't seem that the trailers/advertisements aren't doing it justice, if that's the case.

I would agree with CNN that it's a great family movie. I haven't seen the ads and trailers, so I'm not sure how it's being pitched. |

Wait, was "21 Jump Street" good enough to be carried by anyone? Isn't that like saying Billy Ripken carried the 1988 Orioles?

My 6yo liked it and from the kids I have talked to, they said they like it better then the original. The parents that I have talked to have said it wasn't bad, but not as good as the original. I guess I was worried that it would be too much of a Burton movie and not like it, I think it's worth a look if you liked the original.

Coming from a guy who doesn't really buy into the whole "Depp = today's greatest actor" thing, I was honestly surprised by the movie. Now keep in mind I haven't seen the original (no I haven't been living under a rock, nor am I a communist/facist/work for EA) but I was moved by the film. Wonka definetely had a dark side, and it bugged me that during some of the serious "dark" points in the film, people would laugh just because it's Johnny Depp. I'm guessing those are the people who still see Captain Jack Sparrow whenever they see Depp now. Overall the movie definetely SCREAMED Tim Burton which can be both a good thing and a bad thing. If you're not a fan of Tim Burtons vision then don't bother plopping down the $$$ for this one.
I am not often surprised by a film, but this one did it. I will probably pick this one up when it comes out on DVD as well. On a 1-10 scale I'd give it a 8 1/2.

Not a big Burton fan...I've liked Depp in about half the movies I've seen him in...the trailers for the film creeped me out as well. Definitely a rental for me.

Just noticed that the postI thought I made here never went happened, doh.
Anyways, was a great movie to me. My 5 year old daughter and Loren liked it too. I think Burton was actually the perfect guy to do this movie. His style is what this movie needs, it is supposed to be a little odd like that, IMO.
