Baltimore Orioles: Hall of Fame Discussion (2/2)

Part 2 of the Orioles Discussion, mainly because there aren't enough poll options (only allows 12). So the final player:

Javy Lopez: If this were a vote on players my girlfriend finds sexy, then Lopez would win in a landslide. Unfortunately, this is about getting into the Hall of Fame. Being a Braves fan, I've had the misfortune of watching Lopez for the better portion of his career. It says something when the best control pitcher in the game would rather slaughther goats than let you be his catcher in a playoff game, or even a regular season game. A player who really should have been better than he was, he was just as frustrating as Andruw Lopez. Being a catcher, his numbers are naturally deflated, and I'd argue he sat more than the normal catcher due to the Maddux debacle. He's 35 years old with 244 HR. He may be able to reach 300 if he can get out from behind the plate on a consistent basis, maybe more if Palmeiro ever retires. I think he needs to get ~350 to have a legitimate shot at the hall.

He had 2 anomoly years of 34 and 43 HR, and I don't think that will be enough for him. He was probably one of the 1-3 best hitting catchers in the league at any time in his career, but he had the misfortune of playing in the same division as the best hitting catcher of all time. As a result, while he was often an underachiever, he was also an underrated player. As a result, as much as I'd like to vote for him and assure my chances of getting play from my girlfriend for giving a thumbs up to her boy Javy, I'll vote no on Proposition Hall of Fame.

Too Soon to tell:
Not much to say on the O's. Roberts is having a breakout year, but 1 season doesn't make a hall of fame player. B.J. Surhoff has had a long and nondescript career, but he's not hall worthy. Otherwise, not much going on in the O's organization right now.

Unlike the Sosa/Raffy/Tejada poll, all I can say for this one is that this poll is asinine.

I don't think so, and it's all Greg Maddux's fault.

No way he gets in. Unless he has a Bondian renassiance.

I thought the Sporting News had an interesting take on current MLB catchers (Piazza, Lopez, Posada and I think something else). Lopez was actually well about all the Hall of Fame catchers in win shares. It will be intersting to see who says Posada should make it.
