Computer Help?

Ok, the last post was way too long and whiny to get help. Here goes again.

I'm trying to install a Linksys Wireless Card into my PC. I run Windows XP and have no other network controllers installed.

I DID install it, and it worked...but then I had to restore previous settings because my computer glitched. Now when I try to install the card's drivers off the CD, it does everything...then says that there was a problem, and that access was denied.

I made sure my user in XP had administrative access, I even created a new user to try to install it with that one...neither worked, and both gave the same problem. Any ideas?

Try to remove the card in the device manager, then pull the card out, boot with the card removed, put card back in and boot. See if Windows will automatically find it and install the software for you.

Plug it in while the computer is on?

Windows does find the card. Tries to install the new hardware, accesses the CD...then comes up with the access denied error. I'll try to plug it in while the computer is on and see what happens.

I'm no computer expert, but it sounds like it might be a registry issue. I'd go into the registry and delete any references to the linksys driver and try installing it again.

Word of advice:

Never listen to anyone who starts off their post by saying "I'm no computer expert, but" and then follows it up with a recommendation to start deleting stuff out of your registry.

Yeah, no offense Bee, but I think I'll wait until someone who knows what they're talking about recommends Registry Editing -- I don't like doing that even when I have step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

Plugging in the card while the computer is on doesn't seem to work either. I still get the "Access Denied" message. EDIT -- this is after removing the card from the device manager. I've also tried to plug it into different slots on the motherboard, including the slot where my old network card worked, all to no avail.

Linksys Tech Support says that I should try the hardware in a different computer, but my dad threatened my life if I touched his (which is already FUBAR, but whatever). They won't give me anything else to try except try it in a different computer. It makes sense, but I don't know if I want to incur the wrath of my father over a stupid wireless network controller.

VInce, could you have knocked the cable loose on your CD drive? Access denied might be an issue with the CD rather than the card. Just a thought.

Also, not sure if 'removing the card from the device manager' = uninstalling the software/card, but if not you might want to try uninstalling, powering down, and then trying to run the installation software again.

I have a Motorola wireless card and it seems I had to uninstall and re-install at one point to get it working. Just a thought.

I'll double-check, but I don't think there is any software to uninstall. When I went back to the last known good configuration to fix the computer problem before, it was before the card had been installed. Each time I try to install the software (the drivers) is when it has the problem. I'll go check, however.

It's damn annoying that this computer is on the complete opposite side of the house as mine.

Uninstall the NIC completly from the device manager.
Shut down your computer.
Remove the device from your computer.
Reboot with the device removed.
Reboot again.
Install the drivers. Wireless usually needs drivers installed first.
Reboot the computer.

Depending on if it's a laptop or a desktop.
Laptop insert the wireless card in the PCMCIA / USB Slot.
Desktop shut down computer install PCI card / or USB follow Laptop instructions.

Hopefully then windows will install it properly.

I would remove the drivers and the card,
then redo the roleback.

Make sure everything is working.
Reinstall the card.

By the way, rollback is evil, I'd recommend backing up your data to CD or some other harddrive and reloading your pc when you get the chance.

If you don't want to edit the registry, you can always reformat the hard drive and try loading everything again...

Edit: And I can't believe all you guys are so afraid of the registry...messing it up by editing it is one of those urban legends.

Ok. Well, I have the device completely removed from my system right now (Device Manager style), and it is not physically attached to the computer either. When I plug in the CD to try to install the drivers before hand, the computer recognizes the CD, but it won't let me run any of the programs on it. AutoRun doesn't work, double clicking the CD icon doesn't work, and exploring the CD and double clicking on "Setup.exe" doesn't work. None of these things make anything happen. The hourglass shows up for a second, then disappears, and nothing happens.

Taking a cue from Buzzbee, I checked my CD Drive (actually a 52X CD/DVD combo drive) and its cables, and it is plugged in fine. To further test, I re-installed Civilization III, and that worked fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys...hopefully I can figure this out sometime soon.

Now, however, I am getting very low or no signal. Which is weird, since my little brother's laptop, which is no more than three feet away, is getting fine signal. Any ideas on how to fix that? With the low connection, it won't let me connect to the internet.

Ok, well it's still rated at 'Low' signal strength, but it's high enough to get me online.

I'd still love for someone with pointers on how to increase signal strength to say something...but for now...

Glad that worked. I would check your settings to make sure they match what your brother's are for his network card. Also, 3 feet can make a difference, although rare that it would make THAT much of a difference. Can you move yours to where his laptop is or move his right next to yours and see if there is a difference?

I guess I could try to put the computer on the other side of the desk...we might have door opening issues then, however. We'll see what I can do. For now, however, the low signal strength is working pretty well.

I'll warn you, laptops pick up signals much better than desktop cards. My laptop gets strong signal strength in my bedroom, but my wife's desktop is always "poor" no matter what you do. There are some items you can get that are supposed to help (signal boosters, attenae boosters, ect.), but I've never tried them.
