Are you ok? Was it a rolling quake or a jolt type (side to side) quake?

I felt it pretty good in Santa Monica. Looks like initial reports have it as a 5.3, with epicenter near Pomona.

hmm... maybe it felt worse because I'm on the 3rd floor. I've been through a lot of earthquakes and this one shook pretty hard.

Yeah, I'm on the 10th floor of my building, so that could be why I felt it more, too. This was in between the wave and the jolt with some sustained shaking.

Not real close, but close enough, a nice shake to it. OC is safe for one more day.

Yea.. I'm fine. The reaction of our office was much bigger than usual. We've had a few earthquakes since we've been in this building. Most times there is hardly any discussion. This one had the entire office stopped and talking while we rolled it out.

Costa Mesa is further south than you are but we're still a good 60 or 70 miles from Yucaipa.

The scariest earthquake I've experienced was the Whittier Narrows Earthquake in 1987. Even though it was 5.9, it felt like much, much worse. The second one was the Northridge Earthquake and that felt more like a rolling/wave-type of quake. The richter scale measure it as a much stronger quake, but it didn't compare to Whittier Narrows.

Hope everyone out there is okay.

Looks like no one who's posted yet was closer to the epicenter than me. I was at work in Rancho Cucamonga, about 30-40 miles away from Yucaipa.

It came in pretty hard, but it was over very quick, at least from what I felt. Nothing fell in our office, and the power stayed on, but it certainly got a lot of people talking. I was actually on the phone with a business associate in Walnut Creek (in NorCal), so that was probably a strange experience for her.

I remember both the Whittier and Northridge quakes. I was a freshman in HS for the Whittier one, and at a completely enclosed school. So I was in a room with no windows when the lights went out. That was a little freaky. I was more scared of the aftershock a month later, though, as I watched a bunch of plaster/concrete/etc. from the ceiling in the general area (a good 30-40 feet up) fall sharply to the ground about 100 feet from me. The Northridge quake was pretty quiet for me. It happened very early in the morning (around 4-ish), and I was watching one of Sportscenter's late night re-runs after a late date. I didn't move a muscle from the couch and just waited it out.

Didn't feel a thing up here in Santa Barbara, but that doesn't surprise me.

Worst 'quake I've ever been through was definitely the Loma Prieta Quake of '89 -- the one that brought down a section of the bay bridge. I was 8 years old, sitting in my room building legos, and I remember hearing the pipes in our bathroom burst and wondering "what was that" before feeling the earthquake really hit us. The scariest part was that my dad was on his way home from work when it hit -- and he drove over the bay bridge to get home. He was fine, but there was a very nervous 2 hours until he got to a phone to let us know he was ok.
