OOTP: It's fictional, baby!
Well, my quest for my baseball fix has taken me to Out of the Park Baseball. I've played a ton of real player ootp seasons, but never a truly fictional one. After reading this thread by Skydog, I became interested in setting up a fictional league using his modifiers.
My setup is idential to what he explains in his post, except I only simmed 10 years for history purposes. The model is a mirror to the MLB and luckily, the Cardinals have been about average since the inception of the league. Wins : 82, Losses : 80, Pct. : .506, Position in Division : 6, 12.0 games behind leader. Wins : 79, Losses : 83, Pct. : .488, Position in Division : 5, 14.0 games behind leader. Wins : 88, Losses : 74, Pct. : .543, Position in Division : 2, 3.0 games behind leader. Wins : 80, Losses : 82, Pct. : .494, Position in Division : 4, 11.0 games behind leader. Wins : 77, Losses : 85, Pct. : .475, Position in Division : 5, 21.0 games behind leader. Wins : 81, Losses : 81, Pct. : .500, Position in Division : 5, 17.0 games behind leader. Wins : 79, Losses : 83, Pct. : .488, Position in Division : 3, 19.0 games behind leader. Wins : 86, Losses : 76, Pct. : .531, Position in Division : 3, 6.0 games behind leader. Wins : 92, Losses : 70, Pct. : .568, Position in Division : 2, 1.0 games behind leader. Wins : 70, Losses : 92, Pct. : .432, Position in Division : 6, 24.0 games behind leader. Lost in the LCS in 2006 World Series Champions in 2012 Funny thing is, they've NEVER won the Central Division.
Team Market: Really Big Fan Loyalty: Very Good Current Fan Interest: 65 Ticket Price: $10 Total Payroll: $55,276,799 Average Salary: $1,906,097 League Average: $2,658,894 * This team makes a TON of money and my payroll is really low. Building this team should be easy after this year, although as you will see, I could be wrong as since it's the year 2014, player salaries have risen as well. The next series of posts will go over some of the league's history up until now. I've been pouring over stats and I'm intrigued by some of the records that have been set. Some might thing they're out of whack in some areas, but I kind of like what I've seen so far as there's been a wide variety of numbers - both in terms of stats and salaries. Since I'm going into this setup/league blind, I hope nothing show stopping pops up before I get deep into it. In fact, I think I'll wait until I'm comfortable with the overall integrity of this fictional league before posting anything else. Tomorrow should be a fairly lazy day, so hopefully I'll get to decipher more stats from these 10 years of data. Thanks to Skydog for his research, it is much appreciated! Todd |

Spotlight: Texas Rangers 2nd baseman, Stephen "Thunder" Pina
Drafted in the 12th round, 335th pick overall, by Texas in the initial 2004 league draft, Thunder Pina is a 7 time all star, and 4 time league MVP.
No matter if it's the regular season or the playoffs, Pina is quite consistant.
* At 31, and coming off his 4th league MVP season, there's no reason to think "Thunder" is showing any signs of slowing down. There's a place in the HOF for Pina, it's just a matter of when. |

do we suppose to clear rookies record after first season is complete and before we hit proceed to new season?
because you will have alot of rookies records by non rookies for the first season if you notice. |

Ideally, you want to clear them after the first season, but since I simmed 10 years in a row, I just looked at the ROY's and input them myself. Some will be off, but it's not that big of a deal to me. Todd |

Spotlight: Houston Astros SP, Antonio Alvarez
Drafted in the 1st round, 13th overall by Houston in the 2006 rookie draft, Antonio Alvarez is a 5 time all star and has won the Cy Young four years in a row, quite an amazing feat.
In 2007, Alvarez worked out of the bullpen in his first full year in the majors, pitching in 104 games with a 7-1 record and an era of 2.08. What was even more amazing is when Houston went to the playoffs that year, Antonio became a starter and went 5-2 with a 2.31 era - as well as pitching a complete game shutout. From there, Alvarez would never pitch in relief again.
* Alvarez is only 28 and should continue to pile up stats to fill his impressive HOF resume. Last edited by MizzouRah : 05-15-2005 at 02:37 PM. |

(2004-2008)
2004: Led by SP Jason Sines, Cleveland finishes with the best record in the league. Sines was practially unhittable, first in the league in ERA with 1.87, first in WINS with 24, first in WHIP with 0.84. Los Angeles Angeles spoiled his season as they beat Cleveland 3 games to 1. Houston won 94 games, but would lose 3 games to 1 vs the San Diego Padres. Arizona beat Washington and then swept the Padres to face off against the Angeles the World Series. Los Angeles Angels would go on to beat the Diamondbacks 4 games to 1 and winners of the inagural season. 2005: Cleveland has the best record in the majors for the second time in a row, could this be their year? Sines is 20-4 and he helps them take care of the Yankees 3 games to 1. Boston has a great defense and they beat the Indians 3 games to 1 and are 6-1 in the postseason. Cleveland gets knocked out again as Boston takes care of them 4 games to 1. Cincinnati has the best record in the NL and they lose in game 5 to Arizona who's back to the LCS for the second season in a row. Washington beats the Dodgers and then knock out Arizona to face Boston in the World Series. Washington put the NL on the map when they swept Boston 4 games to 0. 2006: Cleveland is the first team and the only team so far to reach 100 wins as they finish 116-46, that's a .716 winning percentage. AL MVP Charles Cobb leads the Indians with his .311 BA, 52 HRs, and 160 RBI. Maybe this year? They beat all star 3b Ronald Arceo and Los Angeles, 3 games to 1. They would meet Baltimore in the ALCS and handle them easily 4 games to 1 (Baltimore handled Detroit 3-2 earlier).. they finally made it. In the NL the New York Mets win 92 games and face off against the Cardinals who are the Wildcard team. St. Louis have 4 gold glovers this year and smack the Mets 3 games to 0. Chicago beat Colorado in a close series, 3-2. They would face the Cardinals in the NLCS and beat them in Game 7. It was Cleveland vs Chicago and the Cubs prevail, 4-2. 2007: Have I mentioned Cleveland yet? They win 113 games and once again lead the majors. Texas has the AL MVP, 2b Stephen Pina. He batted .340 with 37 homers and 119 RBI. Pina and the Rangers square off against Cleveland and AL Cy Young winner, Jason Sines who's 23-4 with an 2.12 era and 2 shutouts. Sines and the Indians win a close one 3-2 and will face off against Detroit, who although a Wild Card team, had the 2nd best record in the AL. Detroit sweep the Yankees, 3-0 and are led by ROY, 1b Sean Chambers. He hit 37 homers and drove in 127 runs. Chambers and the Tigers deny Cleveland a return trip and beat Cleveland 4-2. Houston beats Washington 3-1 and will take on the Mets who handle LA 3-1. NY Mets have Cy Young winner Gilbert Boiling, who had a record of 24-6 and an era of 2.34 with 2 shutouts. Houston handles them with ease and face off against Detroit. In a classic battle between the AL and the NL, Houston wins game 7 and claim another victory for the NL. 2008: You know the drill.. Cleveland win 102 games and Jason Sines wins his second consecutive Cy Young. He was 22-5 with an era of 2.57 and 3 shutouts. They would face Baltimore trade deadline pickup, 1b Peter McElligott and his .367 batting average. Baltimore play great and beat Cleveland 3-1. Seattle plays Toronto and win game 5 and the series. Seattle has two 20 game winners and they handle Baltimore, 4-3 and a trip to the World Series. Atlanta win the WC spot and will play the defending Champions and ROY Carl Hensen. Carl was 13-11 with a 2.57 era. They prevail as they sweep the Astros, 3-0. Colorado is back and with them they bring NL Cy Young winner, Guille Basaldua. Bass, as they called him, finished with an 18-2 record and an unbelieveable era of 1.75. He also struck out 209 batters and only walked 32 in 215.2 innings. They handle Washington 3-1, but Atlanta is on a roll as they shut down Colorado, 4-0. Seattle proves to be too much for Atlanta and their pitching staff takes care of them, 4-2. The National League has 3 wins and The American League has 2. Last edited by MizzouRah : 05-15-2005 at 09:30 PM. |

(2009-2013)
2009: Cleveland does their usual, winning the central for the 6th consecutive time and had the best record in the AL. A rematch between Cleveland and Baltimore and this time Cleveland moves on as they beat Baltimore 3-2. The Yankees make it for the third time and they will take on the defending Champion Seattle Mariners and Cy Young winner Scott Neace. Scott was 20-11 with an era of 3.06 and 2 shutouts. Seattle takes care of New York and they face off against Cleveland in the ALCS. Seattle takes care of the Indians and will head back to the World Series. Houston has the best record in the league this year, winning 98 games.. the same as last year. They'll face Philadelphia and before they can take off their coats, they find themselves beaten 3-0. Cincinnati takes on Arizona and disposes of them, 3-0. Cincinnati has NL Cy Young winner, Peter Campos. Peter was 22-6 with an era of 1.96 and 4 shutouts. Cy Young or no Cy Young.. doesn't matter and Philidelphia advances to the World Series to face Seattle. Seattle win back to back World Series and so ends the book on the 2009 season. 2010: Kansas City finally breaks the spell and they win the AL Central by one game over the Indians. Cleveland gets in as the WC team and will face Toronto who had the best record in the AL with 96 wins. Toronto has a top 5 batter in Steven Michalski, who hit .350 for the year and make the all star team. They also have the 2nd best closer in Martin Rizzo. Martin had 45 saves and was also an all star. Toronto beats Cleveland 3-2 and they'll face Texas, who beats Kansas City 3-1. Texas and AL MVP Stephen Pina knock the Blue Jays out and head to their first World Series. Cincinnati is back and has the best record in the league with 98 wins. They'll take on Philadelphia who's back and hungry for a trip to the World Series. Reds SP, Everett Shirk had 19 victories and a 2nd best 1.95 era. The Reds beat the Phillies 3-2 and Arizona is back after defeating Houston, 3-2. Arizona has the NL MVP, 1b Larry Jones who batted .328 with 38 homers and 128 RBI for the season. He doesn't disappoint and Arizona wins the World Series 4-1. Jones batted .340 and hit 5 homers and had 9 RBIs. 2011: Texas wins 102 games and for the first time in history, Cleveland miss the playoffs, losing by 2 games to division winner Minnesota. Texas and MVP Stephen Pina will take on Toronto - a rematch of last year. This time Toronto wins as they eliminate Texas, 3-1. Minnesota will take on Seattle and they win 3-2. Minnesota catches fire as they sweep Toronto 4-0 and await the winners of the NL. Philadelphia takes on Cincinnati and win, 3-1. They'll take on the Mets as they dominate San Francisco, 3-0. The Phillies are confident as they enter the World Series, but Minnesota is still on fire and they collect rings as they beat Philly, 4-2. 2012: Minnesota's dominance continues as they win the Central again. Boston is back, but Minnesota rolls, 3-1. The Chicago White Sox make their first appearance and they'll take on Texas. The White Sox have ROY CF Gary "The Survivor" Stickles and Texas has the AL MVP, Bill "Bleeder" Kerby. Stickles hit .266 with 20 homers and 82 RBI and Kerby hit .333 with 39 homers and 126 RBI. Chicago beat Texas 3-1 and take on Minnesota in the ALCS. Minnesota make their 2nd trip in a row to the World Series as they defeat Chicago, 4-0. Over in the NL, St. Louis finds their way into the playoffs as the WC and they face the Giants. San Francisco sports the top NL hitter in John Folkers, who hit .351. St. Louis have a gold glove at 3b and at ss and their defensive ability shows as they beat San Fran, 3-1. A rematch between St. Louis and Chicago and St. Louis plays great ball and win, 4-2. St. Louis will take on Minnesota in the World Series and win a tough game 7 to become Champions. 2013: Chicago win 110 games and will face the Blue Jays, who are back into the playoffs. Toronto squeaks by, 3-2 and they will play Texas who beats Baltimore, 3-2. Texas and Chicago square off and behind 4 time AL MVP winner 2b Steven "Thunder" Pina, Texas beat Baltimore, 3-2. Next up is Toronto and they lose a tight game 7 and the series, 4-3. Texas is back in the World Series. In the NL, Washington win 99 games and they will face LA in the NLDS. LA beats the Nationals, 3-2 and wait on the winner of the San Francisco - Houston series. Houston and Cy Young winner, Antonio Alvarez prove too much for the Giants as they beat them, 3-1. It's an LA - Houston matchup and the Dodgers smoke the Astros, 4-0. Los Angeles roll into the World Series and they beat Texas, 4-2. The National League win 3 titles and The American League win 2. Overall, The National League have won 6 titles to The American League's 4. Last edited by MizzouRah : 05-15-2005 at 09:35 PM. |

(2014, Present)
It's 2014 and the Los Angeles Dodgers are defending their World Series title over the Rangers. I choose St. Louis for obvious reasons, but besides their 2012 title, they've only made the playoffs one other time and finished dead last in 2013 with a 70-92 record and 24 games behind division winner Houston. Here are the Power Rankings from last year:

* After cutting some minor league dead weight and a high paid waiver pickup, we now have the lowest payroll in the league. Needless to say, we also have a team that reflects that payroll. |

Spotlight: Philadelphia Phillies $44 million dollar man, 1b Larry Jones
Drafted in the 1st round, 5th overall by Atlanta in the initial league draft, Larry has been quite consistant in his 10 year career and shows no signs of slowing down. He's two homeruns away from 300, 53 RBIs from 1000, and is three hits away from 1600 - all of which should be accomplished early in 2014. This 6 time all star and 2010 MVP hit .467 with 5 HR and 12 RBI in the 2011 playoffs. Although the Phillies lost in the World Series, Larry Jones shut up reporters who claimed his 7yr/$44,441,100 contract was ludicris.

Meet the team
(contact/gap/power/eye/avoid k) (PA=possible arbitration/AE=arbitration eligible) Position Players: C Gerald Pennock Age: 29 Bats: L Throws: R Salary: $578,571 - 2014 Ratings: 51/80/67/50/60 Gerald has been up and down in his career, started in St. Louis, traded to Pittsburgh, released two years later, claimed by Kansas City, released, and then claimed by St. Louis. Pennock will challenge for the starting spot but will start the year on the bench. C Bobby Santee Age: 36 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $788,400 - 2017 Ratings: 46/37/18/22/36 On paper, Bobby looks like he's washed up, but last year in 86 games he batted .353 with 2 HRs and 35 RBI. That alone will grant him another spot in the St. Louis lineup, but if last year was just an abberation, Pennock is more than willing to fill in. 1B Richard Merrifield Age: 29 Bats: S Throws: R Salary: $417,400 - 2015 Ratings: 56/65/62/88/52 Drafted 181st in 2005, Richard finally broke into the majors with Seattle in 2010, batting .339 in 43 games. Next season he would start and only hit .241 with 9 HRs and 70 RBI. He would get traded to LA that year and then see stops in Florida, Washington, and finally St. Louis in 2013 where he hit .253 with 11 HRs and 63 RBI - he also won a gold glove last year. He's the starter, for now. 1B Robert Sumter Age: 24 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $300,000 - 2014 (PA) Ratings: 50/39/80/28/64 Drafted in 71st overall in 2009, Robert showed signs of greatness, batting .324 with 14 HRs and 85 RBI in A ball. Maybe rushed into AAA the next year, he would be called up in 2011, playing in 84 games, but hitting a measly .168 with 13 HRs and 28 RBI. From there, Robert's bounced around AAA and the majors playing in 110 games for St. Louis last year, hitting .218 with 11 HRs and 41 RBI. He starts out as a backup, but could see some decent playing time. 2B Mark Nickel Age: 27 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $2,893,000 - 2015 Ratings: 55/61/59/40/84 Mark was the #4 pick in 2005 by Oakland, a smart and speedy baserunner who could play great defense. Started out in AAA and hit .286 with 8 HRs, 40 RBIs, and stole 50 bases. Never could hit for average in the majors and was traded from Oakland to St. Louis last year. Hit .247 with 11 HRs, 50 RBIs, and stole 56 bases. He's the starting 2nd baseman, but he's a career .239 hitter. 3B Ronald Hott Age: 22 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $300,000 - 2014 (PA) Ratings: 52/73/68/53/64 Mr. Hott was drafted by LA in 2010. Won the World Series in 2013, but only hit .229 in the post season. He's had identical .260 BA seasons in 2012 and 2013, but in 2013 he knocked in 90 RUNS. LA traded him to St. Louis in the offseason, where he'll start at 3b. 3B Max Veliz Age: 29 Bats: L Throws: R Salary: $350,000 - 2014 (PA) Ratings: 45/56/63/84/49 A career minor leaguer, Max just can't put together a good season in the bigs. He tears the cover off the ball in AAA, but is a career .229 hitter in the majors in 309 games. Claimed off of waivers in 2013 by the St. Louis Cardinals, Max is strictly for defense. SS Mike Flakes Age: 32 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $3,070,000 - 2017 Ratings: 50/45/68/37/54 Drafted by Houston, Mike played 6 seasons for the Astros. A great fielder and strong throwing arm, Mike made the all star team in 2006 when he hit .311 with 12 HRs , 74 RBI, and an OPS of .826. In 2009, Mike had a career with Houston, hitting .295 with 21 HRs and 77 RBI. Decided to pursue FA in 2010 and St. Louis signed him to a deal worth over $7 million for 4 years. Not only did he win a World Series with Houston in 2007, but in 2012 he won his second ring, this time with St. Louis. At 1470 hits, he'll be pursing 1500 hits this year and he shouldn't have any problems as he'll start at short. SS Adam Laforge Age: 34 Bats: S Throws: R Salary: $440,000 - 2014 (PA) Ratings: 51/62/55/21/58 Drafted 1015th overall by Anaheim in 2004, Adam showed signs of an everyday player, but could never substain an average over .259 in the majors. Another player claimed off of waivers by St. Louis, but not much more than a bench warmer. LF Modesto Cruz Age: 26 Bats: L Throws: L Salary: $300,000 - 2014 (PA) Ratings: 70/52/84/41/62 Modesto showed promise early in his career, but back problems quickly halted his progress in the Yankee farm system. In 2012, he hit .279 with 26 HRs and 91 RBI for Tampa Bay and Cruz finally thought his career was back on tract. More injury problems in 2013 found him on waivers and St. Louis is hoping a rested Cruz can help off the bench in 2014. CF Matthew Malott Age: 23 Bats: L Throws: L Salary: $3,135,714 - 2014 (AE) Ratings: 55/52/87/59/51 Matt is the highest paid position player on the team. Drafted 11th overall by the Cardinals in 2009, Malott quickly progressed through the minors. He played in A, AA, AAA, and on the major ballclub in 2009. Just three years later, he would help the Cardinals to their first World Series Championship. Last year he saw career highs in RBIs with 105, to go along with 27 HRs. He only hit .269 last year, but he's improved every season. He's your starter in CF and the cleanup hitter. RF Carlos Gonzalez Age: 31 Bats: L Throws: R Salary: $860,000 - 2016 Ratings: 67/52/31/32/48 Carlos broke into the league with Cleveland in 2004. He became a full time starter in 2007 where he hit .327 with 8 HRs, 62 RBIs, and scored 100 RUNS. Although he is a career .307 hitter in 1206 games, he's bounced around from Cleveland to Pittsburgh to Arizona to Oakland, and finally picked up by the Cardinals in 2013. He's the starter in RF and quite a bargain. RF Rigoberto Pedraza Age: 28 Bats: S Throws: L Salary: $2,360,000 - 2016 Ratings: 73/60/53/27/59 Rigo broke into the majors with the Diamondbacks in 2005 and would be traded to the Cardinals in 2006. He's been a steady player for the Cardinals, hitting .285 last year with 14 HRs and 67 RBIs. A great fielder, he's your starter in LF. * Yikes, not much in the way of big time players, and to be quite honest.. I suspect this locker room to be much changed in 2015. I'll see what I have as far as keepers go and the rest will be seeking employment elsewhere. |

Pitching Staff:
(stuff/control/movement/velocity) SP Tyrone Broadhurst Age: 23 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $300,000 - Automatic Ratings: 38/63/77/88-91 Drafted in 2012, Tyrone moved up the minor league ladder quite quickly and was promoted to the majors in 2013 after going 6-4 with a 3.57 era in AAA. He finished 4-11 with a 5.26 era for the Cardinals, allowing 138 HITS in 113 INNINGS of work. The Cardinals are hopeful he can hone his 4 pitch arsenal and show some improvement in 2014. He is the #5 starter and has his work cut out for him. SP Ronald Claudio Age: 31 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $6,720,000 - 2017 Ratings: 69/73/90/93-96 The Cardinals highest paid player, Claudio was drafted in the 1st round, 15th overall in the 2005 rookie draft and he's lived up to his hype. His best year was in 2012, as the all star went 18-6 with a 2.99 era and struck out 194 batters. He also earned a World Series ring, going 4-1 with a 3.04 era in the playoffs. He's an inning eater, leading the league in 2012, pitching 261.2 INNINGS. He's easily the ace of the staff. SP Matthew Harnois Age: 29 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $1,420,000 - 2016 Ratings: 63/70/78/87-90 Matthew was a 44th overall pick in the 2008 draft for the Cardinals and after some early injury trouble, has settled in at the #2 spot in the rotation. Last year he was 9-12 with a 4.18 era. He keeps the ball in the park and with some defense could be much better than his record shows. SP Jesus Trujillo Age: 19 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $300,000 - Automatic Ratings: 73/64/88/91-94 Jesus was drafted in the 1st round by Milwaukee in 2012. Traded to the Cardinals later that year and rushed into the starting rotation the next season. Raised many eyebrows in the majors as he went 13-11 with a 4.08 era in 2013. Jesus shows great composure on the mound, quite rare in someone so young. He's the middle pitcher, #3 on the hill to start the 2014 season. SP Norris Wells Age: 25 Bats: L Throws: R Salary: $300,000 - Automatic Ratings: 43/72/71/88-91 Another youngster on the Cardinals pitching staff, Norris was drafted by the Rockies in 2012. Started 9 games in 2013, going 3-4 with a 4.99 era. The Cardinals don't expect much from Norris, but he'll start in the #4 spot in 2014. RP Felton Boyd Age: 33 Bats: L Throws: L Salary: $2,570,000 - 2015 Ratings: 37/92/64/88-91 Felton came up with Kansas City in 2004. Did well in the minors after some seasoning and has pitched surprisingly well out of the pen. Has excellent control and appeared in 54 games last year with a 3-3 record and an era of 4.07. RP Wayne Bryant Age: 22 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $300,000 - Automatic Ratings: 73/67/66/95-99 A hard throwing right hander, Wayne throws heat - nothing mesmerizing about what he does on the mound - but he is a great talent and has a huge upside. Drafted 21st in 2012, he's come along nicely for the Cardinals in just two years. Last year in 16 games, he was 0-1 with a 3.78 era. He'll get the start in the bigs this year, but the question is... is he ready? RP Santos Covas Age: 28 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $2,325,714 - AE Ratings: 65/100/83/91-94 A 4th round draft pick in 2008, Santos has been a fixture in the St. Louis bullpen. He's won a World Series ring and in the last 4 years, has appeared in 453 games. The Cardinals expect the same out of Covas this year, this time he'll be the setup man. RP Corey Deloatch Age: 25 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $612,000 - Automatic Ratings: 37/75/71/89-92 An 8th round draftee, Corey gets his first shot in the bigs mainly as a mopup guy. He hasn't done all that well in the minors, but he'll get a chance to impress the management here in St. Louis. RP Aaron Panella Age: 29 Bats: S Throws: R Salary: $1,980,000 - 2015 Ratings: 46/79/70/91-94 Aaron was drafted by the Giants in 2007 and was thrust right into the majors. He did well and in 2009 made the all star team, going 1-1 with a 2.13 era. Couldn't get it going in 2010 and was traded to St. Louis where he worked hard and got back on track. He still has good pitches and should give the Cardinals ample INNINGS out of the bullpen. RP William Suazo Age: 24 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $895,000 - AE Ratings: 90/49/49/91-94 William was drafted in 2009 by St. Louis and has been decent since coming up to the majors in 2010. Won the World Series in 2012 and pitched in 70 games last year - his most ever. Hopefully he can improve on his 4.84 ERA from last year as he has the stuff to do it. CL Ray Santiago Age: 30 Bats: R Throws: R Salary: $4,280,000 - 2016 Ratings: 112/100/65/88-91 Not your typical mow 'em down closer, but Ray Santiago has wicked stuff. Spent one year in the minors when drafted in 2007 and has never looked back. Was 4-0 with 5 saves and an ERA of 0.79 in the 2012 post season. His pitching was key for the World Series Champion Cardinals that year. In his last 6 seasons, Santiago has 201 saves and an ERA of 2.92 - his best coming in 2011 when he had 46 saves, and ERA of 1.86 and 106 Ks in 77.1 Innings. If they can get to him, you can almost tuck the kids into bed and call it a night. * I'm quite excited about this pitching staff. Sure, there are a few questions here and there, but considering my position players, at least the pitchers have some talent. It shouldn't take much work to figure out where I need to go here.. which will allow me more time to analyze the position players. |

2013 Standings
Central Houston 94 68 .580 -- .269 3.50 Cincinnati 86 77 .528 8.5 .259 3.71 Pittsburgh 83 79 .512 11 .269 3.63 Milwaukee 75 87 .463 19 .269 3.95 Chicago (N) 74 88 .457 20 .253 4.17 St. Louis 70 92 .432 24 .254 4.35 After winning the World Series in 2012, the Cardinals slid to the bottom spot in the Central division. They had the worst ERA in the division and their hitting was just as bad. 2014 probably won't be much different, in fact if we win 70 games, I'll be happy. It'll be a good year to familarize myself with this team and find out what we need to do to contend in 2015. I'm not going to kid myself, we look horrible on paper.. but we have a good reserve of cash to get better on. 2014 Predictions: Houston: Led by Cy Young SP Antonio Alvarez, Houston will once again win the Central division. They have a great pitching staff and a decent lineup. Did I mention they have pitching? Pittsburgh: Signed Closer Pablo Abad in the offseason. Pablo had 37 saves for Texas last year and will solidify this pitching staff. Milwaukee: Decent staff and excellent hitting. Signed 3B Joaquin Restivo in the offseason and added a player who hit .301 with 22 HRs and 87 RBIs. I think they over take the Reds this year and should surprise. Cincinnati: Peter "Stud" Campos retired and journeyman pitcher Miguel Maldonado will have big shoes to fill. A decent lineup but could possibly finish behind the Cubs this year. Chicago: Lost a great reliever Guillermo Paras to the NY Mets in the offseason, but invested in SS Ruben Covarrubias. Ruben hit .273 with 21 HRs and 76 RBIs for Arizona last year. I could see them finishing ahead of the Reds for the 4th spot this year. St. Louis: A young inexperienced pitching staff and very little hitting, need I say more? * There we go. We open up against Houston to start the season and right off the bat I'll get to see what kind of hitters this team has. Anything above the cellar would be an accomplishment as far as I'm concerned. * Thatcher (59/63/61/88-91) is a 25 yr old starter/relief pitcher who wasn't put it together yet, but as a 4 star prospect, I'm willing to give him a shot. Corey could use more seasoning in AAA. |

* Thanks to a 6 game winning streak, we are tied for 2nd place behind Houston. So far, I'm impressed with this team out of the gate, especially since we lost #1 SP Ronald Claudio on 4/20 with a strained elbow ligament. |
