Our New Puppy

This thread should probably be titled My New Puppy since the only way I talked radii into letting me have a puppy was to promise that he wouldn't have any puppy responsibiity After a long drive to Dahlonega this morning, I picked out the cutest, most adorable little puppy I have ever seen...I believe he is a dachsund/terrier mix...he has the head shape of a dachsund and the coloring of one also, but has long legs and a regular body.

Thanks to everyone who offered their advice in the original puppy thread!

All your computers must be broked because I can see the pictures just fine!

Radii is fixing it for me...just consider this proof that I have no idea how to work a computer other than to turn it on and connect to the internet...

It took her a year and a half to get me to relent. I'll buy the 20 pound bags of dog food since they're cheaper, but I think she is well aware of how serious I am in that request, so we'll see The cats are (happily) 80% or more my responsibility so I don't think it's impossible!

This is stikingly similar to my wife and I and I think you should consider this a "win." In reality, it probably wasn't a question of "if" as much as a question of "When".

try having a child, those are fun too

Seriously, very cute puppy. Someday we may have another dog. We had one way before we had children, but we had to put it to sleep when he started having epileptic seizures. It was a small mixed kind, something with tibetan spaniel in it with a mix of terrier. The wife and I are both big dog persons and we said that someday we'd have a bigger breed, maybe a labrador retriever.

Congrats on the find, hope you have fun with him/her

The puppy is amazingly cute.

I am in the same boat. I love dogs. I have had a dog pretty much my entire life, but my wife is allergic and had asthma. I think it's a no go.

we don't use middle name for humans here, but seriously, do people really give a middle name to their dogs?

sometimes. My cat is named Dean Smith Dixon after the legendary UNC coach.

But I've also had cats with no middle names. With me personally it just depends on whether or not there would be any signifigance to a middle name.

We just got a puppy about a week and a half ago. She is an Old English Sheepdog named Molly. Here is a picture from a week ago:

Our first week with the pup I worked from home, so this has been her first week spending her days alone. We have a laundry room that we put her in at night and when we're at work, but she cries and whimpers whenever we put her in there, I feel terrible.

Does anyone know how long it generally takes a puppy to adjust to sleeping all night? She gets us up around 4am to go to the bathroom, and then she is usually wanting to stay up and ends up barking and crying from her room for a long time.

well our dog took my last name when we had it, but we never used the last name, except when I was really pissed at him. Using the full name has more power to it than only the first name

The vet automatically gives our pets our last name when we board them. Otherwise, no, I have never called our dogs or cats by anything other than their names - no middle, no last.

Excluding expletives, of course.

Some dogs, never. One of our two is as lazy as we are and will sleep in as late as we want to. The other tends to be a 6:30-7:30 riser. I will say that it took both of our dogs longer than a week to get used to sleeping at night without lots of bother. Realize that she is probably sleeping a lot during the day, too.

Your vet will have some good suggestions. Also--if you have the room/energy, maybe consider getting two dogs. We found that two can keep each other company. Since we got #2, #1 has been much less neurotic. They are, at heart, social animals.

I hate the fact that you are locking your dog up in such a small room for so long. To me that is so cruel. But if that is the only choice you have i agree with albion that you should get a playmate for your puppy. Then she won't cry as much or be lonely in the laundry room.

Also--if you can get a crate/kennel and keep her in it in your bedroom to sleep--then she will be close to you and not feel completely alone.

I put Leo in a crate last night for about 30 minutes, but the whining and crying drove me nuts and made me feel SO guilty that I ended up sleeping on the couch with him. He can't get off and on the couch by himself so I know he slept all night long...woke up at 6:10 and took him outside and he actually went to the bathroom out there instead of in the house! WOO HOO! Of course, earlier he pooped on the floor BEFORE he scratched at the door to tell me he wanted to go out. I fiugre I'll end up out here with him at least for a week or so until I know he'll get through the night without pooping on the floor. Then we'll let him have the run of the house and sleep with us

A hint. Don't just punish them for going inside the house. Reward them for going outside. And keep using the "go word" while the whole process is going on. When we want Freddie to go, now we just say "piddle," and he knows what we mean.

I don't know about everyone else, but I do...the cat is Rolie Polie Olie (first name) Madeline (middle name) Leavitt. Luckily my son, who picked the name, let us shorten it to Olie, which then morphed into Oliegirl (hence my screenname).

So far all I have come up with for a middle name is Barkley, because we live near Berkekley Lake, but it has more of a Basketball connotation to it b/c of Charles Barkley. Also, Leo Barkley Leavitt-Dixon doesn't sound very good...

I did tell him no earlier when I realized he'd pooped in the house, but it was shortly after he'd peed outside and I'd praised him and given him a treat...he pouted for a while but got over it and took a nice nap on my lap
