(the) Prom Rant

Ok...it's been 18 years since I was in high school, but since when is the prom now called just "prom"?!

"Are you going to prom?" <-- what the hell is that?!

Did I miss something, or was their a papal edict telling the free world to drop "the" from the event?

This one bartending gig I had, we got a lot of prom kids coming in for dinner. Those girls in their prom outfits always made my dick hard.

For me, it's like, "let's go to the dance." Who says, "let's go to dance?"

I'm pretty sure it was "The Prom" for me 6 years ago. I don't really remember though, didn't go and didn't pay attention.

I've referred to it as both the prom and just prom. It is a noun so I don't think there's anything wrong using it like that.

I think both are correct, actually, like Batman. Often referred to as The Batman, but he's addressed as just Batman...

Ah shit I just became that which I abhor!

I'm suspending myself for a period not less than seven days. Thank you for your understanding.

Fascinating. As much time as I spend around high school kids, I hadn't really noticed this until you mentioned it. What is funny is that we had five of 'em over for dinner tonight, so I steered the conversation over to that big spring dance, and not ONE of them called it "the" prom. Interesting.

Here we are at last
The moment soon will pass
We'll go our separate ways
We'll vanish in the haze
We'll never be the same
We'll forget each other's names
We'll grow old and lose our hair
It's all downhill from there
But tonight we'll reach the stars
We'll rent expensive cars
And dream our dreams
Of a perfect night
And we'll sing our prom theme

Here we are at last
We're running out of gas
The air is getting thick
The girls are feeling sick
We'll pass out on the beach
Our keys just out of reach
And soon we'll say goodbye
Then we'll work until we die

But tonight we feel like we're stars
We'll play our air guitars
Cause we're eighteen
It's a perfect night
To sing our prom theme

I think we interjected the specific prom..."so and so is going with so and so to Senior Prom".

Still sounds strange without "the" though.

Yup. I actually remember a couple of years ago one of my buddies waited on a table of like eight or ten prom kids, and they were harrassing him about giving them some wine. They apparently offered him $20 if he sold them a bottle, but he of course told them no.

They wound up trying to run out on the bill. The girls left the table first, as if they were all going to the restroom, and right after my buddy dropped the check the guys got up to leave. Luckily my buddy hadn't gone far, checked the book and saw that there wasn't any cash in it, and chased down the brats.

Of course, he still wound up with no tip. Fuckin' kids...

Prom is short for Promenade.

You don't say, "I'm going to Promenade." You say, "I'm going to The Promenade."

End of discussion.

That isn't true in all cases. I tip pretty well. I think most of it has do with their upbringing, not just the person's age.

It may be because I deliver pizza but I would say 8 out of 10 kids who answer the door will not give me a tip. That's why I said most kids don't tip, but we have had enough tipping threads no need to make another one.
