Talking "The mullet is the white man's version of cornrows."

Boortz was just railing on mullets, saying something to the effect of: "Deal with it. If you wear a mullet, you could be capable of pontificating on Einstein's theory of relatively, and people would still make a first judgement on you that you're an idiot. Walk into a job interview wearing a mullet, and you've IMMEDIATELY got two and a half strikes against you." Royal Marshall, his board engineer, cut in and said, "Can I make a comment here? The mullet is the white man's version of cornrows. Everything he just said about a mullet for white guys is also true for cornrows for black guys."

Gold!

I dunno...I have seen instances where cornrows look fine (not on white guys, though)...however, I have yet to meet someone and think, "nice mullet"

I agree on both counts, and I also think that the impression of cornrows will change over time. The "hip hop culture" is much more accepted by people who are currently 40 and under, and I think that 40 ceiling will raise. I think I was a Junior in HS when Run-DMC released "Walk This Way," which was a watershed moment for rap--the first smash crossover hit that wasn't a "novelty song." Point being people a little older than me on down have grown up with hip hop. It'll be interesting 40 years from now to see if people in their mid-70's will listen to rap music and play computer games. I have a feeling that a good number will.

I was visualize this stuff and laugh to myself. When people are in their 70's at a wedding... will the DJ throw on an "oldies" record like "Nuthin but a G Thang?"

Don't know about the rap part, but I'm pretty sure I'll still be playing computer games, maybe even more so than now, with all the free time that comes with being retired, the kids living with their families and all

Can't wait for FM2035 to come out!!!

If I ever have grandkids, you had better believe that one day I'll say something along the lines of. "Yeah, you boys might THINK that Trey Simmons can flow, but that boy can't hold a CANDLE to cats like Rakim. Here's a copy of Paid In Full. Listen to that, and then you'll know what mike control is REALLY all about."

In terms on "mainstream" acceptance, perhaps. But cornrows are part of a vital and relevant culture, while the mullet says: "Yeh, I still listen to White Snake."

Except in the rare case where it says: "I care more about irony than not looking ridiculous."

Whew. Glad my wife likes mine. I tend to bolt out of bed when awakened. That could get scary.

Not since I was like 8. Mama would braid it at night from time to time. Apparently braiding it for a few days helps an Afro look more full.

There's 2 distinct types of cornrows. The ones that are well maintained and look good, maybe even have some kind of funky design(think Allen Iverson on gameday). Then there's the snarly kind, that look horrible(think Allen Iverson in Mugshot). Unfortunately there is only 1 look for a mullet. Retarded.

You are not alone my friend. If you look closely at the pic of Arles, so is he. He meticulously evens them out every morning before he jumps in the shower.

I can rag on Arles all day, he's in a seminar with no computer access.

But I don't think goatees are associated with any particular class of people, other than maybe those between the ages of 25 and 35. And they certainly haven't come close to reaching the level of scorn and derision of mullets. I don't see the connection, honestly, since they seem to cut across various geographic, social, and economic demographics.

There is no need for such deception. Just leave a bunch of nair rubbed into a certain area. Then, it will come off by itself...

I would propose that a strategically placed gold tooth would provide an effect much closer to that of a mullet than corn rows would.

I thought about this more today. Based on the demographics of Atlanta in particular, I expect that by 2025, Atlanta will have a "Hip Hop Oldies" station--one that plays rap music that the middle-aged crowd (I'll be 56 at that point) listened to in their younger days. I'm picturing a set list that runs from late 70's-early 80's songs such as The Message, Rapper's Delight, The Bridge, White Lines, etc., all the way up to the late 90's/early 00's. I'm guessing that a natural cutoff point for marketing purposes would be "Old School Hip-Hop: The Hits Of The 20th Century."

No man over the age of about 20 ish should wear cornrows and expect to have any type of credibility in the business world. Cornrows is a hairstyle for young guys and girls.

I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened already. I'm 32, don't follow hip hop at all anymore, but do enjoy the 80's/early 90s stuff. A lot of that stuff is still in rotation in my car cd player.

Regarding the hip-hop "oldies" concept, I'd be surprised if it hasn't already happened. In Seattle, there are already 2 stations that are "classic" alternative, i.e. stations that specialize in classic early '92's "alternative" rock like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains mixed with popular '80's rock like the Cure, New Order, the Clash, New Order, etc.

I'm 35 and I've definitely hit the target demographic for "nostalgia" in terms of music, fashion, movies and TV.

I can easily forsee going to weddings in 20 years and seeing the "kids" get off on classics like "I like big butts and I cannot lie..." and "Alright stop what you're doing, 'cause I'm about to ruin the image and the style that you're used to..."

I did not realize so many people are in my age range. About to hit 34 in 1 1/2 months. I can still do a mean beat box that will put you all to shame.

Since I moved around to different military bases up until the sixth grade, I had a unique taste for music. I wonder if I am one of the few black people that liked Hall and Oates in the 70's and 80's and also Kenny Rogers or just one who cared to admit it. Shoot I find myself even liking Kelly Clarkson songs nowadays. It's funny because songs I used to dislike in the past has grown on me like Take on Me from Aha and Careless Whispers from George Michael just to name a few.

Yet I got that exposure from hip hop from around age 11. I even wore those goofy breaker pants (with all the freakin zippers where you often lost loose change or house keys).
