Nat's All Folks! (MVP Owner Mode)

Nat's All, Folks!

MVP 2005 Owner's Mode Dynasty
2005 Washington Nationals

I'm running a pretty straightforward, low-on-story (because I'm not good at that) Owner's Mode dynasty in MVP 2005. I'll be tracking line scores and such for each game as we go through. My general hope for this dynasty is to up my post count.

I'm kidding.

Basically, I'm tracking my play - looking for some tips and thoughts on the team from others, and such.
PC Version of MVP 2005
Rosters: llcmac, version 3
o Renamed fake players
o Renamed top 100 prospects
o Some major transactions

Settings:
o Difficulty - All-Star
o All others default

Major League: Washington Nationals
AAA: New Orleans Zephyrs
AA: Harrisburg Senators
A: Potomac Cannons

I'll be playing the first ballgame of each Nationals series, then Managing the remainder of the series.

Part of the point of Owner Mode is to build a new stadium from the ground up as the years progres. With that in mind...

Anacostia Park
Location: Bay
Field Shape: High RF Wall
o There are only a limited number of selections for the field shape.
LF Line: 330
Left-Center: 390
Center: 420
Right-Center: 370 (High Wall)
RF Line: 295 (High Wall)
Wall Color: Indigo
Far Wall Type: Brick
Lower Tier Seat Color: Gray
Field Type: Bluegrass
Mow Pattern: Diamond
Dirt Type: Clay
Batter's Box Layout: Batter's Box 3
Logo Behind Home Plate: Mascot Logo

With $2 million in the bank to improve, we add some concession stands and such:

Ice Cream Stand ($200k) 1 of 4 bought
Soda Vendor ($1m) 1 of 4 bought
"Coach's Kiosk" ($200k) 1 of 1 bought - Sells Batting Helmets
"Record Breakers" ($200k) 1 of 1 bought - Sells Retro Caps
"Slugger's Souveniers ($300k) 1 of 1 bought - Sells Team Pennants, Baseball Cards, Team Baseball

The remaining $100k we hold on to for the moment.

I'm happy with Schneider as a starting catcher here - he's a solid enough hitter and fielder to not be a weakness in either spot. Bennett is a weaker fielder, but can hit lefties better, so that's where he'll get his spot starts. Nothing too much beyond that - Yoshida has a pretty good arm, and Powell has good power, but nobody to really keep an eye on in the minors.

Boscan may develop into a backup catcher, but he and Osik are somewhat expensive as it stands - if there's the opportunity to replace them with cheaper free agent-types, then that's a possibility.

Nick Johnson is a nice hitter, if not the stud he was made out to be at one point early in his career. He'll hit lefties well, and righties okay. He's our starter at first for the foreseeable future. Wil Cordero will be fighting for a general utility spot for us - he can play first and in the outfield; while Carlos Baerga may still be able to hit, he's probably done in the big leagues.

Larry Broadway (what a name!) is on the Top 100 list for Baseball America - he'd be a slightly below-average major leaguer right now, but should continue to improve. With Nick Johnson in the bigs, however, I'm not sure where Larry will go - he's a pure first baseman, and we don't have the DH in the National League. One of the two may become trade bait next offseason.

Jose Vidro is a definite player for us - one of the best hitters on the team, although so-so defensive range. Ramon Castro is a pretty decent player as well, and might make the team as a utility infielder. Tavarez has speed to spare, but has to develop his bat and some plate discipline.

Vinny is getting old, but can still hit the ball. We'll be counting on him to provide some power from third base. Carroll can hit for a decent average behind him, but not really much power - he's likely someone Castro will battle for the Utility spot in the infield.

Benoit is getting paid a good bit, and I don't see anywhere for him to go - he's a possible casualty as well.

An interesting quandry here - Guzman is signed to a long-term deal, and is a solid player at short - range, speed, doesn't take a lot of walks but can hit for average. Wes King on the other hand, is a question mark. He was in A-ball last season, but my scouts are telling me this kid should be in the show by midseason. He doesn't have Guzman's range - or speed, although he's not shabby - but he can hit well enough to play for someone right now. We'll be keeping a very close eye on King.

Wilkerson is a solid all-around player. He has a good arm and great range in left, and should hit pretty well. He's being pushed by Terrel Sledge - Sledge is a better hitter against RH pitching, and is faster; but doesn't have the defense, the arm, or the discipline at the plate. Wilkerson is the man right now, but Sledge can play. Trouble is, is there a spot for him to play at all regularly? His speed may buy him a spot on the bench, but he's someone who there will be demand for if we moved him.

A logjam of pretty good players here. Chavez is a very solid fielder in center - very good range, speed, and great on the basepaths. Only an average hitter, though, but enough to keep the job. J.D. Corey has comparable speed, and is just as good a hitter - like King, he's someone I'm going to need to watch in the minor league system. If he was a better fielder, he'd push Chavez for the job right now. Escobar is a former top prospect for the Indians and Mets - he is a step behind Corey in terms of development, but is a pretty good player himself. Ryan Church, when it comes down to it, looks a lot like both Corey and Escobar - but he can play all three positions in the outfield. He's a top Top 100 prospect, but doesn't have the defense to play center field for me. He may get moved.

Guillen left Anaheim with something of an attitude problem, according to rumors - but he brings a solid bat to DC. He also has possibly the best arm on the team, and will hold down RF well for us. He's a mistake hitter - his strike zones are either hot or cold, not much in between. Hammonds is still a decent hitter, but is competing with the younger guys for the spot. An interesting take on Radinsky - he can tear up left-handed pitching, but can't hit righties at all.

In general - none of my pitchers think they're being paid enough. Hence, my entire pitching staff is unhappy. Meanwhile, in terms of actual quality - Loaiza is probably the ace of the staff, followed by Livan Hernandez. Ohka, Day, Rauch, and Armas are all pretty decent pitchers after that, plus there are a couple quality arms in AAA (Patterson, Greisinger) who can come in in a pinch. Vargas and Kim are both 5-pitch guys, although the quality of those pitches isn't quite ML starter level. The debate with them is to keep them as long relief or let them go every fifth day in AAA. Shawn Hill is an interesting prospect - at 23, he's got room to grow, and he's got a decent repetoire already. None of hte other guys project all that well at the moment.

Eischen will see an awful lot of our relief time, as he throws three very good pitches with movement. The closer's job is between Cordero and Ayala - I like Ayala a lot, as he has a great sinker to go with a slider and change. Cordero is younger at 23, but doesn't have the same quality pitches. They'll fight it out for a bit. Biddle is an expensive reliever, but is quality - he can be moved around the deadline if we're out of the hunt.

In terms of prospects, I like Josh Everett a lot - five pitches, of which three are big-league quality right now. If he could develop some stamina, he could be a very good starter. Saevans is a darkhorse to make the bullpen out of spring training, with a 4-seamer, curveball, and slider. Tim Mathews is another keep an eye on.

Spring Training Transactions

One thing we seem to have in abundance is mid-level starting pitching, so we look to the Texas Rangers (always short on pitching).

The Washington Nationals send:
SP Tomo Ohka
SP Jon Rauch
CF Ryan Church

to the Texas Rangers for
CF Eric Jacinto
SS Larry Hunkin

Jacinto and Hunkin are both very solid, low-level prospects. Jacinto (23) has speed and range to spare, much like Chavez, although his hitting hasn't come around yet. Hunkin is in the same mold, but younger (20). My scout is incredibly high on Hunkin, noting that he has the change to challenge for batting titles later in his career; while one big plus is that both have huge hot zones in the strike zone and not much cold.

-

Secondly, we take a look around to find weaknesses - other than a general lack of power (which won't come cheap regardless), we realize we could use a second lefty in the bullpen (other than Eischen), and a quality third baseman to relieve/backup Castillo. This time we look towards Boston:

The Washington Nationals send:
RP Dan Smith
SS Henry Mateo
RF Jeffrey Hammonds

to the Boston Red Sox for
3B Kevin Youkilis
RP Abe Alvarez

Alvarez is a young, live arm who is a borderline starter/reliever; but with only three pitches, he'll work out of the pen. The three pitches he has, however, are solid - a good 4-seamer, changeup, and curveball as a lefty. He can still develop (22), but we'll be moving him right into the bullpen. Youkilis is more of a household name after Moneyball, and more so after the World Series run. From our point of a view, he's a solid, well-rounded third baseman who can play defense, hit enough, and take a walk with the best of them.

-

With Youkilis on board, we don't need Jamey Carroll, so we clear out a bit of contract space to pick up a speedy outfielder.

The Washington Nationals send:
3B Jamey Carroll
1B Wil Cordero

to the Seattle Mariners for
RF Ryan Serrano

Serrano is a mediocre hitter, but has speed and range in the outfield. He's a bench guy for us.

We've managed to clear a few million of salary space with these deals as well, which is nice. We'll revisit this around the All-Star break and see if there's any other movement that can be made.

Free Agents

We need to sign one free agent, a AA-level starting pitcher, and settle on 18-year old Bernie Deitrick, who has some potential, with five pitches. He's a long way from quality right now.

Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies

Nationals: Esteban Loaiza (0-0)
Phillies: Randy Wolf (0-0)

Game Impact: 2/10
Opening Day!

Randy Wolf looks awesome to start the game - striking out five in three innings, but is hurt running the bases - Amaury Telemaco comes in to start the fourth. We give up an upper-deck shot to Thome for a 1-0 deficit in the fourth. 2-0 in the sixth, after a second Thome shot, this one to center. Things start to get ugly when Kenny Lofton pulls one out with two on, and that'll about do it.

Washington Nationals (0-3) at Florida Marlins (2-1)

Nationals: Zach Day (0-0)
Marlins: Al Leiter (0-0)

Game Impact: 4/10

We give up an early solo shot in the third... to Al Leiter, which is embarrassing. We counter in the top of the fourth, as Leiter hangs one to Nick Johnson, who parks it in the right field seats. Things are knotted up late, but I blow it with a controller error - throwing to first rather than the cutoff man from deep left center will result in an inside-the-parker every time.

The Braves get one early, but we respond on a mistake pitch by Smoltz - Armas Jr puts a two-run shot out to help his own cause. We're hitting Smoltz well early, when we can stay off the splitters out of the zone. Unfortunately, the bullpen falls apart and takes us out of the game.

Washington Nationals (3-6) vs Arizona Diamondbacks (4-5)

Diamondbacks: Casey Daigle (0-0, 4.91)
Nationals: Esteban Loaiza (1-1, 5.54)

Game Impact: 2/10

Aaand the first homerun in Anacostia Park is by Diamondback 1B Chad Tracy. Brad Wilkerson is the first to bank one off the high right-field wall, which brings home Castilla to tie the game. Guillen hits one completely out of the park (not too hard) in the third, towards the river. A pretty solid effort the whole way through, and we win our home opener. That's got to make the fans happy.

Washington Nationals (5-9) vs Atlanta Braves (6-8)

Braves: Horacio Ramirez (1-0, 0.69)
Nationals: Esteban Loaiza (2-1, 4.12)

Game Impact: 3/10

A hell of a pitchers' duel today - we're scoreless thanks to some incredible defense on both sides. Top of the ninth was amazing - after a leadoff double by Furcal, with one out we catch him leaning home on a grounder to third and get the speedster out in a rundown. Then Chipper is thrown out trying to score from second on a base hit to center, Endy Chavez throwing him out by a hair. Offensively, we can't crack Horacio Ramirez, as both starters go nine innings. Top of the tenth, Chad Cordero gets Giles to line out to second with runners on second and third, then strikes out Furcal. We load the bases with one down in the tenth, but can't get the runner home - Endy Chavez strikes out, and Schneider bounces to short. The game ends in the bottom of the eleventh, when leadoff hitter Terrmel Sledge (pinch-hitting for the pitcher Cordero) takes an 0-2 pitch from Grybowski to the opposite field and over the wall. Great game, and had me pumping in the air.

Nationals: Tony Armas Jr. (0-2, 8.27)
Mets: Tom Glavine (1-1, 6.38)

Game Impact: 4/10

Coming off two straight extra inning wins, we're going on the road to Shea against a Mets team looking for their fifth straight win. Armas has absolutely not been effective this year, and today is no different - it could easily have been 4-0 after two, but only 1-0... Mets finally get runners across, and aside from working a couple of walks and a couple of base hits, no real offense from the Nats.

FWIW, Sledge has had great success as a pinch-hitter, but hasn't done too well in the few starts he's gotten. Castilla was horrid early but hot lately to bring his numbers up. Both Sledge and Youkilis will start getting some more at-bats to show what they can do... Youkilis has no average, but has been drawing plenty of walks.

Abe Alvarez has been a pleasant surprise, gradually becoming a more solid member of the pen. Armas, however, has been a huge disappointment - we're going to back him off to the bullpen for right now, and give Sun Kim a couple of starts in the rotation to see what he can do.

Minors
Batter of the Month
AAA - CF Alex Escobar (.310, 3 HR)
AA - SS Wes King (.398, 5 HR)
A - CF Eric Jacinto (.299, 4 HR)

In AAA, nobody is really making a pitch to be moved up to the bigs - Escobar is batting well, but not enough to displace anyone.

In Harrisburg (AA), there's a different story. Our three big prospects there are carrying on just fine - Wes King leading them all, unsurprisingly. If he keeps hitting like this through May, he'll get a ticket to New Orleans - likely displacing Martin Talbot, who is not hitting terribly well and may not be ready for AAA. J.D. Corey is hitting solidly (.315/5/19), as is Larry Broadway (.318/2/8), but neither are pushing for a move.

Potomac's award goed to Eric Jacinto, one of the pair of players we brought over from Texas. Again, a candidate for promotion in a couple months - The other guy who came over in that trade (SS Larry Hunkin) has had a rough start at .198/1/6.

Pitcher of the Month
AAA - SP Shawn Hill (1-1, 2.20 ERA, 21 K)
AA - SP Evan Brown (5-0, 1.34 ERA, 32 K)
A - Gabe Rader (2-0, 2.42 ERA, 25 K, Sv)

A handful of AAA pitchers making waves - Hill, Concordan, Beltran, and Carroll are all at a 3:1 K:BB ratio or better. Nelson Connor (AA) didn't get the pitcher of the month, but might be the best guy to watch - 22 strikeouts against only 2 walks in 25.2 innings.

Financials - YTD (Projected)
 Revenue
  Ticket Sales: $5,710,410 ($35,580,247)
  Merchandise Sales: $188,048 ($1,171,684)
  Concession Sales: $348,144 ($2,169,205)
  Media/Sponsorship: $3,327,869 ($21,000,001)
 Total Revenue: $9,574,471 ($59,921,137)

 Expenses
  Player Salaries: $8,842,623 ($55,799,999)
  Staff Salaries: $1,109,290 ($7,000,000)
  Seating Capacity: $158,470 ($1,000,000)
  Concession Stands: $1,390,164 ($2,400,000)
  Store Venues: $795,082 ($1,300,000)
 Total Expenses: $12,295,629 ($67,499,999)
 Net Income: -$2,721,158 (-$7,578,862)

Pretty straightforward there. We can possibly cut $8m in salary by moving some of our higher-priced players. Castilla is making $3.1m, Guzman $4.2m, Vidro $4.8m, and Loaiza $4m. If we can find a buyer for Vinny, that'd be the best bet - clear some space, and we have Youkilis to step in. Vidro and Guzman are too important to the offense right now, and Loaiza is one of the few decent pitchers. Biddle at $2m and Armas Jr. at $2.1m are two other options.

Let's see what we can do with the trading block.

Added to Trading Block:
3B Vinny Castilla
SP Tony Armas Jr.
RP Rocky Biddle

Bottom of the sixth sees Livan get in trouble and give up a bunch of singles and a handful of runs. We threaten a bit in the ninth, enough to get Gagne in to induce a double play to end it.

JT Snow batting better than .400 to lead the league? Yikes

Good work so far -- I'll be following along.

Nationals: John Patterson (0-2, 4.85)
Giants: Kirk Reuter (2-3, 5.13)

Game Impact: 3/10

J.T. Snow comes into this game as the league average leader, and hits doubles in each of his first two at-bats. Bonds homers after the first for a 2-0 Giants lead, but Patterson settles down after the first inning. Unfortunately, 8 strong innings amounts to nothing - we can't get offense going against Reuter, with Kevin Youkilis thrown out at home trying to cut the lead to one in the sixth. Snow takes Cordero for a ride in the ninth for the final margin.

Nationals: Sun-Woo Kim (2-0, 1.57)
Diamondbacks: Javier Vazquez (2-3, 4.28)

Game Impact: 2/10

We take a 1-0 lead when Vazquez leaves a fastball inside to Nick Johnson, who yanks it into the right field stands. That's the only thing going early, though - Vazquez has a nasty change that drops right out of the zone, and that's a big reason for four strikeouts through three innings. Kim gets in trouble in the third, though, and gives up a 2-out, 2-run single to Luis Gonzalez. Terrmel Sledge (getting the start in left for Wilkerson) is thrown out trying to go to third on a Johnson single to end a threat in the fourth - we each add a run before some trouble. Jose Vidro makes a great diving stop, but fractures his toe on the play and we need to pull him out. It turns out to be a lucky break for us - Castro gets a big 2-run single to give us the lead in the top of the eighth, which turns out to be the game-winner.

Our bats are hot today - we chase Rusch with five in the second, staking Loaiza to a nice six-run advantage. He doesn't make it easy on us - giving up a bunch of runs scattered, but the offense comes through for us with nearly 20 hits off of the Cubs pitching. Ayala gives up his first run - a long sacrifice fly after a Nomar triple - but picks up his eighth save.

He tries to impress - his first at-bat goes 2-0, then gives the ball a ride, but it comes up just short of the wall in left. In fact, that's the best shot he - or Junkin - have this game. Not much offense, but some good defense. We'll check them out again in a few days.

SP Zach Day is healed and ready to come off the disabled list. We demote RF Ryan Serrano to AAA to make room - Serrano was an emergency OF who barely played. He ends up 1-1 in the big leagues, something to hang his hat on for a while. Patterson is moved to the bullpen, and Day takes over in the rotation. Zach also moves into the #3 slot, pushing Sun-Woo Kim to #5.
3B Kevin Youkilis is (still) unhappy with his playing time. He is our starter against LH pitchers, and is not playing well. We'll leave thing as is, at least until we deal Castilla.
The New York Yankees approach us, actively looking to deal Tony Womack. Womack is making $2m/year each of the next two... we offer Castilla ($3.1m/2) for Womack and one of their Top-100 Prospects (SP Phillip Hughes), and they accept.
Womack is put in the majors, and will fill in until Vidro comes off the disabled list. Hughes takes a slot in the AAA rotation. Labandeira did well in his limited duty - .273/0/1 - but heads back to AAA in favor of RP T.J. Tucker.

Not quite as much pitching this time through. Jacinto has a much better game (2-4, HR), although he's left up to bat as the go-ahead run when Hunkin gets himself thrown out at second to end the game. Tessmer didn't do all that much, but hit the ball solidly.

Postgame Notes:
We'd like to move some players around. Jacinto and Tessmer are being promoted up to AA, which necessitates a few other moves.
From AA to AAA, we're going to promote top prospects CF J.D. Corey and 1B Larry Broadway.
In AAA at 1B, we've got Carlos Baerga - we'd like to dump him if possible.
In AAA at CF, we've got Alex Escobar, who is already unhappy. We're going to move him to RF and drop Serrano all the way down to where he really should be - A ball.

Taking a look at the trading block, there are a few interesting scenarios - especially with Armas Jr. about to come off of suspension back into the bullpen.
The Yankees have a rookie 1B/DH Matt Barkett on the block, who at 24 is a pretty solid hitter, although he may not have the highest ceiling.
The Angels have a 21 y/o starting pitcher who is one of their top prospects - Ervin Santana has four very good pitches, although he needs to work on his stamina if he's going to be more than a back of the rotation guy.
Finally, the Indians have Billy Traber, a LH starter who has five pitches and moves the ball around a lot.

The Indians accept Baerga for Traber straight up, which cuts down on a good chunk of money questions.

We also sign an A-ball reliever with 5 pitches and some potential.

We promote Escobar to the Majors for the series with the Orioles in exchange for T.J. Tucker - we need the extra bat in an American League park.

Postgame Notes:
RP T.J. Tucker (AAA) is upset with his playing time.

We make a pair of moves to drop some more salary, pick up some prospects we very much like, and clear up a bullpen logjam.

We sent Tony Armas Jr (and his over $2m salary) to Seattle for a pair of prospects - Top 100 starting pitcher Felix Hernandez, and third baseman Mike McLemore. McLemore is a guy the Mariners had on the block who we think has Jeff Cirillo potential - good glove, hits for average, good plate discipline. Hernandez is an outstanding prospect who can throw five good pitches, is only 19, and has a very high ceiling. Both head to AAA for the moment, as T.J. Tucker replaces Armas in the big leagues.

We then make a straight-up reliever swap - sending Rocky Biddle ($2m) to Cleveland for Kaz Tadano.

A great start by Sun-Woo Kim with one bad pitch that ruins what otherwise would have been a solid win.

Terrmel Sledge has gotten a good bit more playing time and has been consistantly effective. Youkilis has not turned things around yet, although his OBP is still higher than a handful of other players. Vidro will be coming off injury soon, at which point we'll probably look to move Womack, who hasn't been effective. On the positive side, Brian Schneider has hit well during May, more like what we were looking for from the start.

Vargas is beginning to trail off after a solid start, and Loaiza has been decent all year. Our biggest hole is Livan Hernandez right now - aside from one or two very good starts, he's been horrid. In the pen, Eischen is a guy who we'd like to count on but just can't right now - but since he's a lefty, we need something. We're going to throw some garbage innings at him to see if he can get things under control; if not he'll be headed to AAA.

Minors
Batter of the Month
AAA - 3B Brendan Harris (.309, 4 HR)
AA - OF Ricky Mathews (.274, 5 HR)
A - LF Nate Brous (.357, 4 HR)

Taking a look at our prospects...

Our top guys in AAA are actually looking pretty darn good. Wes King, Larry Broadway, and J.D. Corey are the three guys promoted to AAA early this month - all three are doing just fine. King is setting the world on fire (.382/5/13 - .470 OBP), although is blocked by Guzman in the big leagues. Broadway is solid (.305/2/5 - .429 OBP), and Corey had a slow start but is picking up (.298/1/9 - .411). All three of these guys are about at the same spot, we'd like to keep them together in AAA this year with possible September callups, and a spring training invite next season. The recently acquired McLemore is settling in (.268/0/4 - .317), while one guy who got a cup of coffee earlier (Labandeira) has been hot, hitting .332.

In AA, Jacinto is the guy we're watching the closest (.295/1/7 - .340), but Ricky Mathews (.290/5/28 - .371) and Pete Trenouth (.341/4/12 - .389) are hitting better at this point.

A-ball, Terry Radinsky right now could hit lefties with some success in the big leagues, but he has not plate discipline and can't hit righties to save his life. He's hitting .324, but the top guys we are watching are a couple of middle infielders - Randy Lofton (.332/4/24 - .375) and Larry Hunkin (.247/1/13 - .312). Both these guys are pretty solid defensively, and both have great speed. Hunkin has brought his average up 50 points through May.

Pitcher of the Month
AAA - SP Shawn Hill (2-3, 1.82 ERA, 50 K)
AA - SP Evan Brown (8-1, 2.23 ERA, 62 K)
A - Gabe Rader (4-0, 2.53 ERA, 59 K, 2 Sv)

All of a sudden we've got a very deep set of pitching prospects. Shawn Hill is the top guy on our internal list right now - he's 2-3 in AAA, but with a 1.82 ERA, 50 K in 59 innings, and only 15 walks. Traber (a lefty) is averaging over a strikeout an inning, and the two guys who are actually Top 100 prospects are solid enough - Hernandez has a 4.40 ERA and a 34/17 ratio, Hughes has 3.89 and 24/16. However, both those guys are under 20 years old, and we don't expect either to be in the big leagues for a couple of seasons.

Two relievers - Horgan and Osborne - are decent lefties, and both are under consideration for being brought to the bigs if Eischen is demoted or traded. Lee Saevans is the top relief prospect, and probably good enough to pitch right now, with three ML-ready balls to throw.

In AA, Mike Hinckley is also a Top 100 starting pitcher prospect, and doing well in AA (3.15 ERA, 43/14); but need to develop another pitch. There's a lefty in AA (Luis Chen) who is dominating and may get moved up - 18/2 K/BB ratio, a 0.83 ERA, and 23 saves.

Financials - YTD (Projected) (Projection Change)
 Revenue
  Ticket Sales: $10,742,300 ($35,580,247) (+$700k)
  Merchandise Sales: $375,631 ($1,267,755) (+100k)
  Concession Sales: $707,509 ($2,387,843) (+200k)
  Media/Sponsorship: $6,773,772 ($18,013,774) (-$3m)
 Total Revenue: $18,599,212 ($57,924,635) (-$2m)

 Expenses
  Player Salaries: $18,462,290 ($52,795,622) (-$3m)

  Store Venues: $900,000 ($1,300,000) (0)
 Total Expenses: $23,628,957 ($64,495,623)
 Net Income: -$5,029,745 (-$6,570,988) (+$1m)

We've slimmed a good bit of salary, but as much as we've done there we've lost in sponsorship moneys. We'll need to revisit this when the trading deadline gets closer - if we're in contention (as I believe we may be right now) then maybe we hang with who we have, but if we can clear $8-10m of salary closer to the break, it may be worthwhile if we can break even.

The only move we'll be specifically looking to make in the next month is moving Womack in expectation of Vidro coming off the disabled list - with Labandeira hitting well in AAA, we may be able to move him up, give Castro some time in the lineup. So let's see who is out there on the trading block:

RP Aaron Fultz, of the Phillies - LHP, making $400k, with a 3.31 ERA and a 34/18 K/BB ratio.
There's also an Anaheim pitcher - Ervin Santana - who my scouts say could be great right now as a big-league starter, who is 22 and on the block.

We move Womack to the Angels for Santana and a AAA-catcher, Jeff Mathis. Mathis is a solid prospect, hitting .343, and who should develop into a decent power hiter. Mathis and Santana head to AAA, Horgan to the majors for another lefty arm. We're light in the infield right now, but only for a few days until Vidro returns.

Huge home game. We could find ourselves right back out of this thing if we don't find a way to take at least one from the Marlins in town. Today is close until the bullpen implodes.

Washington Nationals (25-31) at Cincinnati Reds (28-27)

Nationals: Livan Hernandez (2-5, 5.20)
Reds: Eric Milton (2-2, 5.04)

Game Impact: 3/10

This is the rainout makeup from a couple weeks back. We make a swap - calling up Labandeira and sending down Escobar - as we need the extra middle infield.

Livan throws an awful good game - we see a couple of odd happenings, and just catch the breaks today. This was our first day game in Cincinnati - and it's hard to hit, as the ball goes in and out of shadow on the way to the plate. We do hit, off Milton, and catch one break as we first throw a Cincinnati runner out at home by a step; then score on our own attempt when the throw from center field hits the mound (!) and bounces over the catcher's head.
The hero in this one is Endy Chavez, who is the source of the outfield assist, and broke a scoring drought with a 2-run homerun to center in the seventh.
