OPENING SEASON COMMENTS
I lose three players:

DE Dennis Terrell, after being suspended in 2008 for assaulting a female student in her room, leaves because he's pissed off over the suspension. Good riddance.
QB Kenyon Cosby leaves over lack of playing time. Pretty frustrating, because he was listed as Content (although he didn't play any all year.) He had some nice green bars, too. Bummer.

ACADEMICS: 53 reputation, 35th overall ranking. We improve 4 more points in reputation, and 20 more spots in ranking. Very nice. We're in the Top 20 in several subjects.
PRESTIGE: 87. We lose one point.

STAFF
My Deep South Scout retired, but we're able to replace him with a very strong one was is only 42. Nice! I also get a slightly-better defensive coordinator.

Heh. We avoid the Vols and Gators once again, but at first glance, it looks like we'll face competition from Auburn for the SEC West. Also, LSU may have the conference's best QB in Leonard Barton (77/77). USC has 74/82 Reuben Cash. Florida clearly has the most overall talent in the SEC, but their QB is only 50/88, so who knows what could happen?

Well, for the first time, EVERY player on the roster is either a true signee or a true walk-on. No more of those beginning-of-game stud walk-ons left. This is now fully and officially my team. Here's the report...

ROSTER
(Starters bold-faced and underlined, red-shirts appear red and italicized.)

QUARTERBACKS (SCOUT: Good)

Player#PosEligCurrent EstimateFuture Estimate
Durham, Kendall2QB86685
Harrison, Glen15QBSR(RS)5072
O'Neal, Isaac5QBSO(RS)4164
Coleman, Glenn17QBFR853

We come to the final year of the Kendall Durham era. He won the conference MVP last year, and there's not much reason to believe that he can't compete for it again. Harrison and O'Neal both offer nice hope for the future. Coleman has some outta-sight green bars, so I give him some coaching blocks and pump up his weight and football study work.

BACKS (SCOUT: Excellent)

Thaphituck, Jack39RBSR(RS)4668
Flowers, Max46RBFR45100
Collins, Seth34RBSO(RS)3674
Lewis, Trent31RB(WO)83847
Stone, Alonzo20RB(WO)JR(RS)3451
Ross, Casey27RB(WO)JR(RS)88
May, Jim24FBSO(RS)4875
Small, Alan48FBSR(RS)3551
Patton, Wendell30FB(WO)FR1837

With K. Durham around for another year with strong receivers, I decide to wait a year on giving Max Flowers the start. Thaphituck and Collins should do for now as ball carriers. Jim May was a highly-regarded recruit, and he looks like he's ready to get it done on the field.

RECEIVERS (SCOUT: Terrific)

Armstrong, Jonathan83TE83662
Branch, Tim94TEJR(RS)3068
Puckett, Johnnie84TESO2860
Cornejo, Kent88TE(WO)SR(RS)2222
Hansen, Cory89TE(WO)FR654
Woods, Brady86WR86969
Dunlap, Preston8WRJR(RS)6488
Bagwell, Daryl87WRSR(RS)5466
Buggelli, Richie1WRSO(RS)3962
Sprincz, Timothy82WRFR2065
Shehee, Cory4WR(WO)SR(RS)611
Fleming, Horace80WR(WO)JR44
Arnold, Ian9WR(WO)JR310
Armstrong, John7WR(WO)SR(RS)11

Despite all the playing time I gave Armstrong, he never developed up to his bars. Branch and Puckett both have some pretty solid potential, as does walk-on Hansen. The WR's should be very good. Dunlap was 1st-Team All SEC as a redshirt freshman last year, and looks to have a phenomenal career ahead of him. If Brady Woods can stay healthy this year, we should have a lethal passing game. Bagwell and Buggelli provide some solid depth. Sprincz looks like he's going to be a big-play guy, but not a possession receiver with his 0/26 catch frequency.

OFFENSIVE LINE (SCOUT: Pretty Good)

Taylor, Dennis55CSR(RS)4165
Hausermann, Lance58CJR(RS)2387
Palkowski, Tyrus51CFR1466
Flemming, Mo54C(WO)81428
Curtis, Leslie70GJR(RS)3864
Garner, Tyrell66G82755
Dalan, Kris76GSR(RS)2671
Stokes, Fred60GSO(RS)2270
McCormick, Tito73GFR369
Schwartz, Frank69G(WO)SO(RS)1848
Clodfelter, Marvin74G(WO)SO44
Kippen, Robbie63T85757
Sutter, Preston79TSR(RS)4859
Swisher, Geoff65T82560
Birk, Bernard62TSO(RS)2284
Osborne, Gary67TFR1564
Herndon, Ken68T(WO)SR(RS)1022
Carter, Hunter78T(WO)JR(RS)954
Dawkins, Bo61T(WO)JR(RS)635

Everything about this team seems geared for passing and outside running. The o-line is much better at the tackles than up the middle. We do look like we'll have a quite-solid starting five in a couple of years with Hausermann, Stokes, McCormick, Birk, and Osborne.

KICKING GAME (SCOUT: Terrible)

Greene, Emmanuel12PSO(RS)4754
Hutchins, Darrell10P(WO)81717
Brady, Roman16P(WO)JR(RS)1533
Foreman, Donnie11KSR(RS)5395
Cote, Brent19K(WO)FR330

We lost All-SEC P and K to graduation last year, but are able to reload with Greene and Foreman. We need to sign a scholarship kicker this year, though.

DEFENSIVE LINE (SCOUT: Excellent)

Gillespie, Dana75DE87676
Baughman, Duane95DESO(RS)4762
Tubbs, Johnnie98DEJR(RS)2355
Murray, Ike97DEFR676
Legette, Chuck71DE(WO)SR(RS)1956
Williford, Brett93DT85169
Rodriguez, Bo92DTSR(RS)4059
McKinney, Terry96DTJR(RS)3771
Winslett, Isaac72DTSO(RS)2744
Harmon, Van91DTFR1157
Humphrey, Daniel77DT(WO)844

DE Gillespie is a proven stud, and the other three starters look ready to be good or better. I can't complain, especially if Murray and Harmon can develop to meet their green bars.

LINEBACKERS (SCOUT: Terrific)

Copeland, Andy40ILBSR(RS)6271
Barker, Bernard50ILBSO(RS)2453
Linquist, Jorge53ILBFR1280
Woodford, Clyde56ILB(WO)JR(RS)2556

Whetstone, T.J.43OLBFR1174
Flowers, Ike99OLB(WO)JR1428
Abreu, K.C.64OLB(WO)SO55

I'm *very* happy about the LB situation at this point. We're strong at all three starting spots, and have capable-looking backups. Plus, the two true freshmen both look like they'll be quite good as well.

SECONDARY (SCOUT: Decent)

Kirk, Craig29CBSR(RS)6363
Caldwell, Dominic35CB85382
Boesiger, Richard38CBSO(RS)4559
Durham, Burt21CBJR(RS)3762
Quinn, Ethan37CBFR1892
Horner, Gene44CB(WO)FR937
Mayes, Kelvin36S86277
Alcott, Darrell23SSR(RS)5353
Key, Matt22SJR(RS)3272
Everett, Shane47SSO(RS)2645
Monroe, Lamont26S(WO)83333
Mascorella, Lenny32S(WO)FR1769
Fregoso, Paul25S(WO)JR77

Did I say that I was happy about the LB's? Well, ditto for the secondary. Three returning starters, nice depth, and quality freshmen.

OVERALL ROSTER THOUGHTS
Our defense should be one of the best around, and offense--at least the passing portion--looks flat-out scary. We may have to throw a bunch of short passes against better teams, due to a weak offensive line. Still, we should at least be in the hunt for our fourth SEC Title.

Awesome read, SD.

Keep it up.

The Tide have always been a favorite of mine since the days of Antonio London, my second favorite college player ever.

WEEK ONE
RECRUITING
I plan to offer the following schollies: QB, TE, WR, G, T, K, DE, DT, ILB, OLB, CB, S. Also, I need to induce walk-ons at QB, C, DE and DT. I set my sights pretty highly this year; five of my eight week 1 scholly offers are to guys ranked in the Top 10 at their position. I'll give a more detailed update once I have offers on the table at every position.

OTHER SEC ACTION THIS WEEK
Bowling Green 42, USC 17
Idaho 34, Mississippi St. 31

OUR GAME: Troy State (0-0) at #12 Alabama (0-0) [TV3]
After seeing the final score, I then checked Troy's roster, and realized that they've put themselves together a pretty good football team. They'd probably be one of the teams in the running for the SEC Title, based on their roster. At any rate, we pile up a whole bunch of yards, but due to 3 turnovers only score 24 points on 517 total yards. The defense won't be denied, though, and we win our opener 24-10. The details...

  • Durham was 26 for 45 for 348 yards with 2 TD's and 3 INT's.

  • WR3 Darryl Bagwell had a huge day: 9 catches, 146 yards, 1 TD, as he filled in for Preston Dunlap, who got hurt.

  • RB Seth Collins carried only five times, but gained 84 yards and scored a TD, while Thaphituck pitched in 10 carries for 45 yards.

  • T Preston Sutter was an absurd 8 for 10 in KRB's in our outside running game plan. Wow!

OUR GAME: Southern Mississippi (0-0) at #3 Alabama (1-0) [TV5]
So I went into the season thinking we'd be a defensive powerhouse, but the offense has been very, very impressive. We win this one 37-24 as Durham has another big day: 26 for 46 for 383 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT. Woods and Bagwell each catch 8 passes for over 100 yards and a TD each.

Great coaching job. You seem to be able to handle the best teams in the conference fairly easily. In every career i've played there was always that one team in the conference that i couldn't beat, except for maybe once in a blue moon. In the Pac-10 it was Cal and Stanford. In the Wac it was Rice and so on. A national championship should be too far off for the boys from Tuscaloosa. Good Luck.

This is a hit-and-miss class, but I have to be happy about the academics. If I can continue to challenge for SEC Titles for a few more years while Academics rise seriously, I should be able to take this team to the next level without having to sacrifice several seasons for academic building.

No shocker that we got spanked when we played a truly elite Oklahoma team in the Bowl. From looking at the rosters before the game, I wasn't even expecting it to be as "close" as it was.

Thanks.

I've never fooled around much with defensive gameplanning in TCY, but I'm finding it has a strong impact (perhaps too strong???) I can completely shut down run and shoot teams almost every time, in particular.
