College Baseball and Softball Seasons Already

For teams in warm climates Texas, Florida, Caifornia, Arizona. The northern teams if they want to play before March down in those places Some teams will play half of their schedule(20-25) games before the northern teams paly one game. In past years I remember Wichita State was ranked in the top 20 in the polls despite not playing one game 8 weeks into the season. They need a uniform schedule for this.

College baseball is not popular in the north. If it was, I'm sure there would be a more serious push at getting the season started later, although the Big Ten did talk about proposing something along these lines last year.

Why would this be?

Cutting the schedule of the southern teams would push more kids from high school into the minors and away from college. They wouldn't want their development stunted waiting around for the snow to melt 1,200 miles away.

Wichita State opens Friday in Wichita of all places according to their website. They could be snowed out. They go to Hawaii for 2 weeks in Late February- Early March.

The northern teams could play tournaments in warmer weather climates. Hawaii is a nice place to visit and play games. (I never been there)

Historically, college baseball has been and always will be ruled by California, Texas, Florida and other warm weather states. Holy Cross is the only northeast team to win the College World Series in 1952. The only other "cold-weather" teams to win it are Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio State(all before 1970). Wichita State and Oklahoma have also won it and I consider them "in between cold and warm winters" they could have 80-degrees in January one week then a blizzard the next week.

College hockey will always be ruled by northern teams near Canada. Lacrosse by Mid-Atlantic teams. Volleyball by California teams. Each region has its dominate sport. Football and Basketball can be won by any climate team.

University of Michigan's softball team was one of eight teams to make the World Series in Softball last year. But they don't play anywhere north of Kentucky until April.

You think? I thought I remember reading that BC only offers something like 3 scholarships total for the baseball program. I'm pretty sure that Central Connecticut is better then Connecticut. I'm 99% sure there are years where Eastern Connecticut would have beaten UConn too.

I know that BC and UConn aren't Rutgers/Seton Hall/St. John's but there are some pretty mediocre programs in the Big East.

Of course I know nothing about the baseball in the Big Ten.
