Boomer Esiason: HoF Worthy?

Keeping with the current trend.

•	Selected as the 37th pick in the 1984 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals from the University of Maryland

•	Veteran quarterback of 14 years with the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals (1984-1997)

•	NFL Most Valuable Player (1988)

•	Four-time Pro Bowl selection

•	The most prolific left-handed quarterback in NFL history when he retired in 1997. Career marks rank among the top ten in the NFL in all-time passing yards, career completions and career attempts. Led the Bengals to Super Bowl XXIII vs San Francisco in 1988.

I don't even know if he's on current ballots, but dammit, he should be.

Boomer was a very good QB. But 'very good' isn't quite good enough for the HoF. At least IMHO.

There a two other borderline QBs that would get in before him and neither of them is likely to make it. So I'm guessing that Boomer has no chance.

BTW, I'm talking about Simms and Stabler.

This is true. He looked extremely pissed at Boomer. Boomer tried to backtrack by saying that Peyton has to carry the team, like Dan did....I'm not sure if it worked.

And Gumbel sat there like an idiot, as usual.

Boomer played for a lot of teams who were down in the 4th in Q. Problem is, those teams lost more often than not.

Something I am guessing you could say about every QB, including Elway (who has more 4th quarter comebacks than anyone). I would imagine that every QB who has started more than say, 30 games, has a winning % below .50 when behind at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

As far as Boomer, no way does he make it to the Hall of Fame. He was a good QB, even a very good QB, but he wasn't one of the top QB's of his generation. Not HOF worthy.

Fair enough about the winning % below .500 in the 4th Q. My point was really that Boomer was chucking the ball a lot in the 4th Q and his winning% for all games was not the best (i would guess anyhow. he played on some bad teams in the 90s)

Please understand that I was not arguing for Boomer's inclusion in the hall. Not every good player should go, and I see Boomer as being a classic example of a good player who should not be enshrined.

I just don't think that losing more than you win when behind entering the fourth is a good reason to exclude him, since (I assume) every HoF QB did the same thing.

By the way - how good was Neil Lomax? He completely stands out on that ranking of QB career ratings - both being from an earlier era and getting absolutely no hype at all. He definitely had very little around him, and played on some pretty poor teams, but I remember him being a very accurate, effective passer who was ridiculously injury-prone. (In my fantasy league, the running joke was that you had to spend two draft picks -- one for him, and one for his hip)

His name always jumps out at me as well. IIRC-- from playing Strat with my uncle every weekend-- he was a good running QB as well. At least he was relative to his era.

He was the only thing that you had to be concerned with if your opponent toook the Cardinals.
