Need Opinions on Best Role-Playing Game
Hi everyone,
I'm interested in buying a role-playing game but am not sure which one is the best. I tried EQ when it first came out... I really enjoyed it, but the non-stop camping of mobs to advance your character got old quick. Im sorry, but camping a mob for about 10 hrs just to get a stupid mace is ridiculous. Ive tried DAOC, Ultima Online, Final Fantasy, and Anarchy Online. I enjoyed them all but am now looking for something else, something.... different. Thanks for reading. Lorena |

Strictly for PC? Perhaps SackAttack'll shed some light?

Sounds to me like you're into MMORPGs from that list. I guess I'm more of a solo-campaigner type bit when it comes to such things, but some folks here have been playing Neverwinter Nights. I believe the multiplayer component of it is free (I never got the expansion packs, a bit lazy to re-install the game on my machine).

If you're going for the online stuff, Neverwinter Nights or World of Warcraft (warning: WoW has a monthly fee involved). If you want to include offline RPGs in the mix, Knights of the Old Republic is great, and should only be $20 these days.

World of Warcraft
Puzzle Pirates (http://www.puzzlepirates.com) - like a cross between Tetris & an MMORPG. it might not keep your attention long, but hey, it's different & it's free. As far as non-MMORPG: Fallout 1 & 2 KOTOR

To ditto some people on here, Neverwinter Nights and KotoR are the 2 best that I've run across so far, both are absolutely fantastic games, and both have sequels slated to come out on the PC (though done by a different company than the first editions).

From your list, it sounds like your concentrating mainly on MMORPG. You likely won't ever get away from the level grind with that genre. If you're still interested in looking there, it sounds like World of Warcraft or perhaps City of Heroes may be your best bets. If I recall correctly, both games have groups on here and that may make it more fun.
If you're interested in offline games, I heartily recommend Planescape: Torment. Yeah, it's old and nowhere near as gorgeous as modern day games. But if you're looking for a roleplaying game, you can't beat it. Best. Damn. Story. Ever. NevStar's recommendation of Fallout are good as well. |

If you just want Hack and Slash go with Dungeon Siege.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Final Fantasy VII Freedom Force Any of the Bioware AD&D games (Baldur's Gate 1 or 2, Icewind Dale 1 or 2, Neverwinter Nights, Planescape Torment - although I've never played it, I've heard good things about it). |

Best RPG I've ever played. Planescape Torment It's old, but it is great.
One I've heard great things about and might be tough to find is ... Grim Fandango Those you listed were MMORPGs, I'd give EQ2 a shot. I hear it is significanlty different. |

Grim Fandango is great, but definitely an Adventure game.
I'll chime in with a vote for Gothic 2 which I liked a bunch more than Knight of the Old Republic. Just an outstanding game all around, that takes little getting used to. Since you appear to be going for MMORPGs though, the only choice is World of Warcraft. |
