Norton Internet Security--Spybot
We have Norton Internet Security (antivirus, firewall, and some other stuff) and I am thinking about downloading Spybot, too. Is there any potential for compatibility problems?
Spybot's discussion of this issue does not give me confidence. It starts out OK, but then mentions a problem and changes tenses a few times. Specifically, it says Quote:
Any insight would be helpful. |

I've never known Norton to be the pinnacle of stability or system compatibility. I won't let it anywhere near my machines.

Norton(internet security) got to the point where it block everything from reaching the internet on my computer, including my moden and no matter what I changed it sent me popups until I agreed to it. It was kinda a hostile takeover that didn't happen until I had the damn thing for about 5 months. I quickly uninstalled it and now use ZoneAlarm. Not sure if it is the best thing on earth, but it beats the alternative.

Norton wouldn't have been my first choice, but my dad went out and bought this whole security package anyways without asking my opinion. It's worked fine and I use this computer all of the time. Also use Spybot on this computer.

my work laptop survives just fine with NAV and Spybot S&D.
Also, norton hasn't caused me any problems in the 4+ years i've been using it. |

Thanks.
I'll do spybot then. FWIW, the only problem with Norton that I had was when the firewall was preventing my ISP from auto-downloading some apparently necessary files. As soon as I realized that and manually changed the settings, it worked fine. No other problems. |

Microsoft have just released a beta copy of their new spyware detection software. The reports are that it does find stuff that other programs miss.
I've installed it on this PC and it's caused no problems with Zone Alarm or the proprietary virus checker I use (I gave up using Norton some time ago because of their complete lack of service once you've paid your subscription). Here's a link to a CNET article that made me aware of the MS program: http://news.com.com/Microsoft+launch...tml?tag=st.pop

yikes... your ISP should be doing normal TCP/IP connections and not need any "special software" |

I use Anti-virus guard (AVG). There is a free edition that does everything I need it to do. It monitors what I do and makes sure nothing has viruses. Zone Alarm and Spybot/Ad-aware does everything else.

I just ran Spybot, Ad-aware, Spy Sweeper, HijackThis and AVG.
No one came up with anything except some unimportant cookies(here). I ran the MS beta program and I came up with 15 different problems including a spyware install program. Guess it actually does work. |

Fortunately it didn't bring anything up for me but several people have reported the same as you - that it found stuff others didn't. Generally speaking I'm not a great fan of MS stuff but they seem to have something here. I tried AVG a short while ago and found that AVG and Zone Alarm were not happy with each other.
