Former presidents to lead tsunami private aid effort

Monday, January 3, 2005 Posted: 9:59 AM EST (1459 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush has tapped former Presidents Clinton and Bush to lead a nationwide charitable fund-raising effort for victims of the Asian tsunamis, the White House announced Monday.

The two men will lead an effort "to encourage the American people and American businesses to support, through private contributions, non-governmental and international organizations to provide relief and reconstruction to areas affected by the earthquake and tsunamis," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

The president was announcing the effort in the White House's Roosevelt Room with the two former presidents at his side.

Afterward, Bush was paying brief visits to the embassies of the four nations -- Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand -- hit hardest by the disaster. Bush was to sign condolence books at each embassy, McClellan said.

Cool. I am suprised that Carter isn't doing this, too. Seems like the kind of thing that would be right up his alley.

hopefully the money ends up where it is supposed to and doesn't create a generation of warlords over there.

Guys, this warlord bs is a little overdone- not all of Asia is Afghanistan. Most have regular, democratic governments, albeit with higher corruption levels.

Is Afghanistan even apart of Asia? I agree. Not every country has extreme warloards.

Didn't have to give me a map. I wasn't sure if it was part of the Middle East or not. A yes or no would of been just fine.

Is the Phillipines really a part of Asia? I've always considered myself as a Pacific Island decent.

I wouldn't have considered the Philipines part of Asia, but I somehow wouldn't really consider Japan part of the Asian continent either. That is very strange because I do consider Japan to be an Asian Nation.... To cause more trouble I think I would have placed Taiwan as part of the Asian Continent.

These are things I cannot really reconcile in my head. So apparently I'm just dead wrong, and the map is correct. It's all Asia.

Well, to stir the pot up a pit, the map is not entirely true. For instance, it's got Germany on there and all eastern european countries and these are definitely not part of Asia...
