Thumbs up More fun with 5.1b--Finances *REALLY* matter!

Well, we all know by now that not paying attention to finances in the latest version of 5.1b can lead to having to hire mediocre coaches and scouts, and we've probably had to restructure a big contract or two because of an owner limitation on late-year salaries. However, I am happy to report that it can be even more noticeable than that. For the first time with 5.1b, I have a true marquee QB in Sammy "The Solution" Summers:

I've had good QB's in 5.1b, but not a guy rated 87/87 coming off of a 4,000-yard season. Forget the salary cap; his contract demand priced him completely out of what my owner would let me spend. He wants a $50M plus bonus, and my max bonus is $46.33M, and in the 3rd-5th years of the contract, he wants roughly 30, 36, and 42M--and my owner will only allow me to spend circa $28M as maxsal. I also franchised a DE who, if I signed him to a long-term deal, would go over the owner minimums, and my star G's demands are getting close to the limits as well.

Lesson learned: never spend the maximum allowed on a new stadium when you're trying to keep marquee players around.

Good stuff!

I continue to wonder what the impact of this will be on MP leagues where many teams are in "fictional" ultra-small markets.

I have two thoughts on this:

1. MP moves so slow that it will be a while before we really know.

2. I'm glad we started IHOF by making all our markets identical.

Makes it more realistic IMO, in MP if you have a team in say Des Moines, and the people cant support it, then you move. I love it.

Except for one thing - luxury boxes. That, imo, is a great inequity because that makes the supposedly "identical markets" irrelevant.

Well, you can always build a new stadium.

Plus, even if I wasn't using contract-restriction house rules, the zero bonus wouldn't work with a guy like this anyway. He's asking for too much.

Much easier said when one is a SP fast-simmer than in a MP league that might not be around when stadiums get approved and newly built.

I seriously doubt that IHOF is going away before I get my stadium built.

Has anyone actually tested this in multiplayer? I keep meaning to start a test MP league at home just to see what happens. Do the GMs get e-mail or a dialog like in SP that lets them know what the limit is and when they attempt to go over it, or do staff/players simply fail to sign? Or does the transaction log entry specify what happened? Any idea what to expect?

You get a dialog just like in SP letting you know what salary and bonus limits are. Not sure about coaches, but I'd imagine the same.

That's great to hear. I guess we can say goodbye to the league house rules about x% of the cap to spend on coaches now...

Yeah. We already voted that one out in IHOF. We were using 10%, and now some of the money-losing teams won't be able to even spend that much.

I can confirm this - I tried to bump my DC's salary with about $200K in the CFL yesterday, but that dialog came up just like it does in single play.

But, I, having gotten Atlanta's spot in the league, need to wait until 2017 or some such to build a new stadium.
