Going to Mexico, Travel Advice?

G'day boys. I'm going to a wedding in Mexico in 2 weeks, got the necessary papers and all that jazz, but having never been on a plane (well, aside from when I was a year old), or travelled for any reason other than visiting family or sports, I'm curious what some of the "must have" travel items are.

We're staying for a week on an all inclusive trip (24 hours per day, none of that time limit stuff) at a 5 star resort. I've got the normal stuff (clothes, books, my camera, one change of clothes in my carry on, etc). It's a 5 hour straight trip from Edmonton to whatever airport down there where we'll be met by somebody from the agency to take us to the resort.

So for those that have been to Mexico/their resorts, and those who have items they've learned to take with them on a plane, what else should I be picking up before I leave?

Thanks gentlemen.

I'd recommend earphones. Also, some good reading material. Oh yeah, check with your physician and see if there are any preventative shots you should have before going down there. Probably not, but it doesn't hurt to check. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Make sure you drink some of the fine tequilla. May I ask, where are you going? Are you going to stray outside of the resort?

Don't get arrested by the Mexican authorities with a lot money in your wallet.

Have some chewing gum handy in case you need help with your ears popping during ascent or descent. It's also good to have aspirin (or your choice of pain reliever) and some Pepto-Bismol chewables or the like. Don't forget to go to the bathroom about 5-10 minutes before boarding. Sounds like you have a reasonably long flight. Even minor things like a slight headache or an upset stomach are much worse when you're stuck on a plane.

Yeah, cause if you are loaded with money you will miss the fun you can enjoy in a Federali hold for the remainder of the weekend with the local drunks. (note: I had the cash so I missed the adventure...)

We're staying at the Riu Jalisco just outside of Puerto Vallarta. Not sure how much we're going to venture out, it's supposed to be a pretty sweet resort, but there are enough of us that golf, so I would think we'll be going out for that at least once.

Best part is that it's a 24/7 all inclusive, so the tequila will be like water and for $1,700 (Can) I'm planning on getting my monies worth.

That said, thanks Crappy for the gum advice, I had heard that but forgotten about it. Hope nobody on the plane has a camera out when I turn into an 8 year old girl the first time we hit turbulence.

As a fellow Edmontonian (assuming that you leaving from Edmonton means that you live in the area), get the to the airport a little earlier than they suggest. I just got home from the airport not more than an hour ago and you would not believe how much stress and anxiety can be avoided if you aren't concerned with missing your flight. There is nothing more annoying than hearing somebody at the back of the security check line saying that their flight takes off in 5 minutes. Morons.

As for what to bring with you on the airplane?? I would pack a change of clothes in your carry-on bag (something that would be suitable for your destination) in case their is a problem with your luggage arriving with you in Mexico. Also, if you are being dropped off at the airport by friends or family, I'd leave them your winter jacket and boots just so you don't have to lug them to the beach for no reason.

Have fun...and enjoy your flight!!! Ask for a window seat if possible...it's always cool to see everything from 30,000 feet!!!

I'm from the Park, the place that's resisted assimilation into Edmonton proper for 10 years now

I ended up requesting an aisle seat for the main reason of having leg room. I'll check out the view a few times, but for a 5 hour flight, figured I had better go for comfort.

Thanks for the advice too, where did you get back from?

If you have some extra cash, make sure you go eat at Le Cliff one evening. It's an open air restaurant built right into a cliff overlooking the ocean. The view is amazing, the food is fanstastic, and the service is wonderful.

Oh yeah, it ain't cheap either...

Have fun, bud. I went with my family to La Jolla de Mismaloya a couple of years ago, and it was great...

Went home for Christmas...Ottawa.

Ah...the Park...lived there for a year and now I actually work there...for the catholic school district. The wife and I actually looked at buying a place there, but it ain't cheap to live in the Park...besides, with everybody living out there and working in the city the traffic would drive me bonkers. Now, I just laugh and wave at the suckers parked on the Whitemud every morning!!!

I had an aisle seat on the way home from Ottawa and I didn't sleep a wink because the goddamn drink/food cart hit me everytime it went by...not to mention the old, fat women waddling to the washroom every 5 minutes!!! Argh!!!

On the way to Ottawa, the wife and I actually got bumped up to first class for some reason and, man, that is the way to travel. Tons of room...more comfortable seats that actually massage...better food...free booze...man, coming home in coach sucked ass after that experience!!!!
