Anyone seen the movie? i never saw the stage play, just was exposed to the soundtrack about 1 thousand times in my youth. I thought the movie was great though.

Can anyone compare it to the play though?

I saw the play a number of years ago and loved it. I own the soundtrack and love it.

I'll be going to see the movie soon for sure...

Love the songs, saw the show on Broadway, but I thought it was a disappointment...and this is coming from someone who grew up on the Universal "old school" movies like Frankenstein vs. the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, Dracula, etc.

The main reason I thought it was a disappointment was that I had seen Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and I thought the songs were better than Phantom. It was about 9-12 years ago that I saw it, so I may go see the movie.

Webber's usual lyricist Tim Rice was not available when he was doing Phantom so the lyric is fairly mediocre. The music is still good as Webber is still Webber. The play was fairly fun but will make more sense if you've read the book, which I enjoyed greatly. Haven't seen the movie yet, though, but it seems to be based on the play rather than the book, unfortunately.

Really looking forward to this. Not my favorite musical, but anytime a musical is made into a big-budget movie I'm there.

Glad to see I'm not the only person who likes both football and musicals.

They're bringing the musical to Madison's new Cesar Pelli-designed Overture Center for the month of January. My wife and I are debating whether or not to see it. Neither of us are particularly fond of musicals, but I've had a few different people tell me we absolutely MUST see it.

I don't know if it's a "MUST" see. It's worth seeing as the music and the production are is nice. It is better for following the story along if you've either read the book (recommended!) or know the storyline before seeing it. I thought Starlight Express was a more interesting spectacle as far as ooh and aah factor.
