Book gift idea?

There seems to be a diverse group of people, so I wanted to get some input on a good book for a chick. She just read a few books like Nanny Diaries and Life of Pi (one of her fav's) and Me Talk Pretty Someday. Anybody have any good suggestions either along this line or newer literature? Gracias!

Based on what she likes, I might try Tuesdays with Morrie

Nice. She is my wife and she has read Tuesdays with Morrie...she loved that as well.

Pron would be a funny gift...like when Homer gets Marge a bowling ball.

Well David Sedaris (who wrote Me Talk Pretty Someday) has a number of other books out. I think his latest is called Naked (not pron).

He's a pretty funny writer.

Here is a serious winner - should be right up her alley:

I Was Amelia Earhardt

Wonderful, provocative book -- a bit mushy, should be appealing to the chick flick side, and is apparently going to be made into a movie (I learned this while searching for this link). Get her the hardback - ten bucks or less ought to do it. She will love it.

At least we're on the right track.

How about The Alchemist

Okay, both Nanny Diaries and Me Talk Pretty One Day are humorous, light, urban stories, so in that vein, what about Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner? Also in the same vein as Sedaris, anything by Augusten Burroughs (Magical Thinking , Running with Scissors ) or get in on the ground floor of a book that'll be a huge book club selection in 2005 and 2006 (Cheat and Charmer ).

Oh, and everyone must read The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror . That's an order.

You may also get her The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.
Great book. My mom read it and suggested I read it.

From Publishers Weekly
Hilarity abounds in Moore's latest satirical gem. Sleepy Pine Cove, Calif., is abuzz with Christmas spirit, but Lena Marquez is fed up with her despicable ex-husband, Dale Pearson. On his way home from playing Santa Claus at the local lodge, Dale spies sneaky Lena uprooting his Monterey pines; he pulls a gun on her, she lashes out with a shovel and—oops!—kills him. Seven-year-old Josh Barker, thinking he's just seen the murder of Santa, prays for a miracle to save Christmas. To Lena's rescue comes Tucker Case, a slimy, reformed Casanova and DEA pilot, who gives her an alibi and sweeps her off her feet. The marijuana-cultivating town constable, Theo Crowe, suspects foul play, but Tucker intervenes with a blackmail scheme to keep the crime buried. Meanwhile, there's a new arrival in town: the glowingly blond Archangel Raziel (last seen in Lamb) has come "dirtside" on a "miracle mission" involving Josh's wish and reviving the town's dearly departed. Pine Cove's biggest challenge surfaces as comically reanimated zombies begin to rise and feast on the living, and a huge El Niño–induced storm swirls. This little slice of perverse Christmas cheer is enough to make even the most cynical Scrooge guffaw.

Wow. One of the most bizarre plot descriptions I've ever read.

*adds book to Amazon shopping cart*

Thanks for the tip, shkspr. Is all his stuff like this?

No, some of it is much odder.

Lamb is one of my favorite books of the last five years; it claims to be The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. It is one of the most blasphemous books I've recently read, and yet I found myself rereading all four Gospels right after another right afterwards.

Next up on my silly list: The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists

Oh, and while on the subject of bizarre holiday tales, I give you Santa Steps Out , erotic holiday horror featuring Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny.

Lamb is a fantastic book. The angel in the motel scenes are hilarious.

If she likes "Life of Pi" she might also like a "A Trip to the Stars" by Nicholas Christopher.

Wow....lots of good suggestions here, and mostly ones she hasn't read. Thanks, I'm going to print this biatch up and check out Borders (I waited too long for Amazon, but I'm definitely going to keep this list handy.

Erotic Santa, Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny might be too much for the both of us.

There is an author, Jane Green, who writes funny urban stories, romantic comedies more or less...my favorite is Jemima J, but Bookends is also very good.

There is a series of books called "Shopaholic". First one is Confessions of a Shopaholic, then Shopaholic takes Manhattan, and Shopaholic ties the Knot. These are all great...and there is a fourth one out now, but I don't remember the name of it.

Has she read The Devil Wears Prada? Also very good...
