Mount Rushmore: Bob Dylan Songs (for shorty)

You know the rules, pick 4 Bob Dylan songs to go on the Mountain.

This may help Shorty a bit.

1.) Hurricane
2.) Like a Rolling Stone
3.) The Times they are a Changing
4.) Subterranean Homesick Blues

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright

Idiot Wind

Christ, I forgot to tell Short about Big Girl. Can you believe some people play this at weddings for the "Father-Daughter Dance"? Not a good idea.

The same with Simple Twist of Fate.

With all the albums, it's hard to pick four songs. . .

It was hard to leave Blowin' in the Wind off the Mountain, but PPM probably did more to advance that song than Dylan. The same could be said for Watchtower (Hendrix) and Tamborine Man (Byrds).

And I think there is something in the second two that makes them more unique/perhaps as good or better than Dylan's originals. Dylan's Blowin in the wind is much better though, IMO.

There's a lot of stuff not mentioned simply because there are many more than four superb songs. I was playing the Bootleg Series last night and there's a relatively unknown song called Angelina (not Farewell Angelina) that deserves to get a mention. It's one of those "what the hell is he talking" about lyrics, but hypnotic as hell.

And for sheer emotional impact "No More Auction Block" takes some beating - it must be close to his simplest song (the arrangement is by Dylan not written by him), just a clanging acoustic guitar and a heartbroken Dylan voice and the simple lyrics "No more auction block for me, no more, no more", but I challenge anyone to keep a dry eye or a lump out of the throat.

Other than Hurricane, which is mid 70s, you seem to like his earlier work. What 4 albums do you have?

dola

When we do a Rushmore, I look for things that seem to have some importance.

My Favorite Dylan tunes might be A HARD RAIN'S A-GONNA FALL (The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Live 1975) , DON'T FALL APART ON ME TONIGHT (Infidels), WHERE TEARDROPS FALL (Oh Mercy), THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' (The Times They Are A-Changin', many others).

Of course, my favorites might change next week.

Blood On The Tracks
Blonde on Blonde
Highway 61 Revisited

And then at X-Mas I got the double disc Essential Bob Dylan.
