One quick question
One question. I´m Spanish (from Spain ) and I been thinking that spaniard is a synonim of spanish (but spaniard is only for the people of Spain).
The other day one friend told me that spaniard has a negative meaning (like calling someone redneck or nigger or something like) It is true? |

FWIW, I've never heard any negative attached to the word in that manner.
There's also no such reference to any negative connotation in the 3 sources at dictionary.com

Inigo: I give you my word as a Spaniard. Westley: No good. I've known too many Spaniards.

I hope there isn't a negative connotation as I've used the term with a friend of mine who is from Spain. He didn't seem to take offense.

I've never heard of any negative connotation either. I call a friend of mine The Spaniard. He's British. But his last name is Main. So his nickname started off as "The Spanish Main" and then became "The Spaniard."
Also, Russel Crowe's nickname in Gladiator was "The Spaniard." How can that possibly be a bad thing to call anyone?

Being called Dutch, however, there you have a potential problem...
