Exclamation Cock[roach?] Fighting?!

115 accused of gambling on insect fights

Associated Press

HONG KONG - Hong Kong police arrested 115 men for illegally gambling on insect fights on Sunday in the same building that housed a cricket lovers' association, a police spokesman said.

Police seized about 300 crickets and $1,025 in cash during the bust, said police spokesman T.K. Ng.

The alleged bug gamblers remained in custody Sunday, but weren't immediately charged, Ng said. Illegal gambling carries a maximum penalty of $1,280 and three months' imprisonment.

Anyone belong to the North American Man/Cricket Love Association?

So, is it illegal to fight crickets or just to bet on it?

not sure what that would be in Chinese. Probably wouldn't matter as English is the international language of Cricket Fighting.

Here's another article about it...

In Hong Kong, 115 people have been arrested following a police investigation into alleged betting on insect fights.

A police spokesman said the Far East Friends of Crickets Social Club was raided following a surveillance operation by undercover officers.

Cricket fighting is legal in Hong Kong, but gambling on the result is not.

Police say five of those arrested were believed to have connections with organised crime gangs known as triads.

Cash prize

The event was billed as the Guangdong Hong Kong and Macau Fight of Champions. In reality it was just a series of fights between crickets in a backstreet social club.

But police suspected the battling insects, or rather their owners, were playing for high stakes.

They raided the premises and arrested the players, as well as confiscating more than $1,000 in cash, the crickets and what they described as gambling paraphernalia.

The club claimed it was conducting a legitimate business.

Cricket fights, which were a popular pastime in the 1950s and 60s, are quite rare in modern Hong Kong.

For one thing, the widespread use of pesticides has reduced the availability of suitable fighters.

It is reported that a champion cricket can cost more than $2,500. Those who trade them hunt out the fiercest insects and devote many hours to training them.

I didn't even know crickets fought at all.

I wonder if they put little cricket head gear on them.

From a Google search I found this:

Usually, crickets with big heads, big jaws, and strong back legs are considered to be good ones. "But most important of all, they must be muscular," Miao said.

Good fighting crickets must be well-cared-for.

"Steamed rice is the usual diet, while some owners will feed the crickets little worms, even ginseng," Miao said.

Filling a mini bowl with water and putting it into the pot, Miao said that the water and the food should be changed every day.

"Good care not only can make the cricket much stronger, but also can prolong its life," he added. Sometimes, a vigorous cricket can go more than 10 fights unbeaten, and fans may crown the hero "general."

Is it true the American crickets were banned for substance abuse?

Visitors may still occasionally fine cricket-fighting in some areas of Bangkok. It is a game for children. Two crickets are placed into a box and the children tickle the insects' heads with straws, stimulating them to fight one another. During the battle, the crickets often produce sounds by rubbing their wings together. The fight is usually short with one running away or being devoured by the other.
