Alaskan Volcano Pending Eruption

So, I am zooming around the news last night, and I see a story about this volcano in Anchorage on the verge of shooting its stack.

Usually, this would only be a passing item in my mind, but I am taking my first vaction since taking this Homeland position in September to - of all places - Alaska.

We fly into Anchorage in less than a month. Then we take a 10 day cruise to all the islands and best towns.

Since I have only had 2 vacations in 12 years (one was my honeymoon) then this seems pretty funny to me. Only I would pick a spot that people are running away from to take a vacation.

On the other hand, I bet I get some cool pictures.

Senator, how long are you staying in Alaska? I'll be flying into Anchorage on September 10th, and my boss is flying into Vancouver the week before, taking a cruise up the coast, then a train to Anchorage, before meeting me for business that weekend.

It would be the quite hilarious if the first place I met someone from this forum is in ALASKA!!!

dont worry about the volcano. worry about the fucking tidal wave it will create while you are on the boat or in port

Too bad. Then again, Anchorage might not exist by the time the NAIC quarterly meetings roll around. Maybe Subby can join me for a drink.

Sounds like the vacation my parents took a little over a year ago. They had a great time and saw some amazing things. The pictures my dad took there are spectacular.

Have a great time, Sen...

I guess Senator is well on his way. I'm heading up there in a couple of weeks. Anyone heard any further news on the volcano?

I leave at 5 in the morning on Thursday. Trying to finish up work so they don't call me. Last I heard they are waiting for the inevitable.

I did find this...

Mt. Spurr: Only thing to Erupt are Rumors
By Jill Burke

Thursday, August 12, 2004 - Mt. Spurr did not erupt this morning. That's according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Earlier reports from the National Weather Service indicated that Mt. Spurr may have emitted an ash cloud around 8:00 am, but the NWS now says the cloud that caused all of the fuss appears to have been nothing more than an offshoot from a nearby storm system. Both agencies are looking into to reports that some pilots noticed light ashfall in the air and on the ground this morning, but just what they may have seen, or where it may have come from, remains undetermined.

The NWS says it's job is to act quickly, and get advisories out as soon as possible in the event their may be a potential hazard pilots or people on the ground may need to know about. "Better to be safe than sorry," said NWS Meteorologist Dan Keirns, adding that sometimes they move forward on advisories even when data is still being gathered.

It could be disastrous, Keirns said, to sit on information until there was absolute confirmation. By then, he said, something like a tornado could have already hit the ground. Or, in the case of today's so-called ash-cloud, had it actually been an ash cloud, without notice pilots could have found themselves at risk if the notice came out hours later.

For now, all ash fall advisories and significant meteorological advisories from the NWS have since been cancelled.

The volcano observatory says it will continue to monitor activity at Mount Spurr using seismic data, satellite images and overflights. Mount Spurr has been restless in recent weeks, with many small earthquakes rumbling beneath its surface.

Mount Spurr last erupted in 1992. The eleven-thousand-100-foot high mountain is about 80 miles east of Anchorage, across Cook Inlet.

BTW, have a great trip. I'm really looking forward to it, just for the weather if nothing else.

If you want to dodge lava, go to Hawaii. The volcanoes in the Pacific northwest are bad news.

They've been talking about Spurr blowing for months, and it's been on amber alert....err wait...yellow alert...err whatever the USGS calls it...since June or July. The last time it blew wasn't a big deal. Anchorage got some ash, and the airport was closed for a few days, but no end-of-the-world stuff.

I've talked to several Navy vets who were stationed up in Alaska. They all loved it up there. A great place for hunting and fishing.

Yeah, my former first sargeant was stationed in Alaska for a couple of years. He is a big outdoorsman so it was like heaven to him.
