TCY 2012 - Maryland Dynasty
Witness the road from perennial patsie to respectability and back to mediocrity...
2003 - 1-11 2004 - 2-9 2005 - 2-9 2006 - 5-6 2007 - 8-3 2008 - 6-5 2009 - 5-6 2010 - 5-6 2011 - 5-6 Email... As suspected, Kennedy Richardson is suspended for his final year. Crap! Our Northwest scout has decided to take a job as an Avon salesperson. Clemson has committed a rules violation as has been deemed ineligible for the playoffs this year! We were #16 (yay) in recruiting last year, and our prestige falls to 70. Duke was #8 in recruiting, and Navy was #19. |

Scheduling
We have only one spot open this year, as we already have Harvard in for a home game in week 3. We'd like to try to get Navy on the docket, if they'll answer our phone calls .
After presenting Navy with about 50 million options, they finally accept our offer to come into College Park the first week of the season - gulp! We have 7 home games this year and only 4 away games . Code:

Preseason ACC Poll
Code:
As usual, the prediction is that we stink. Clemson looks to rule the conference, but they're ineligible. You know Virginia is looking to prove something after going 8-3 and yet still getting snubbed by the polls. This could be interesting this year, as I'm looking to have a possible breakout season. |

2012 Roster Preview
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2012 Maryland Terrapins!
Quarterbacks Code:
Shawn Davidson is our man by default, and there is a LOT resting on his shoulders. Shawn has started 15 games the last two years. After a great sophomore season that saw him toss 17 TDs to only 10 interceptions, Shawn disappointed his junior year with an 8 TD, 14 interception effort. He's progressed in practice but it hasn't really shown itself in games leading the Maryland faithful to question his guts. Backing Davidson up is redshirt freshman Jared Rhodes and walk-on Rusty Sims. Neither have thrown a pass outside of practice, so an injury would be devastating. Incoming freshman Wally Kayer will redshirt. Runningbacks Code:
The Geoff Norris era at Maryland is over, and it's time for his replacements to shine. The starting job will probably go to Cris Harper (26 carries, 68 yards, 0 TDs) but Tim Willis will get a shot as well (no carries). Both Brenden Ashby and Wally Schweitzer were highly recruited, so I'm a bit disappointed by how our scouts rate them after camp. It looks like both will redshirt, unless injuries beset us. That gaping hole you see if where Kennedy Richardson was to start at fullback. Due to academic difficulties, he'll sit out his final year and promptly leaves us in a bind. Reuben Robbins will start, but he was recruited as a backup. Walkon Steven Bradley will be 2nd on the depth chart, and we cross our fingers he will never have to enter a game. Note to self: recruit a couple fullbacks! Wide Receivers Code:
Tyrus Matesky leaves a hole at tight end, but we think Ethan Otis should be able to fill in admirably (16 catches, 184 yards). Lorenzo Morton will redshirt this year and hopefull will be ready for the starting job next year. At wideout we are loaded. Dennis Booty (27 catches, 397 yards, 9 TDs) and Fernando Angell (26 catches, 374 yards, 2 TDs) return as starters. Backing them up is junior Kris Esposito (20 catches, 468 yards, 2 TDs) and redshirt sophs Hunter Schroeder (9 catches, 105 yards) and Kris Wolfe. Top 250 recruit Ike Alston will redshirt this season. We definitely have depth and skill at this position. Offensive Line Code:
We have focused a lot on our front line the past few years, so we're hoping this begins to pay dividends. At center, Glenn Tyree (26 KRBs) returns for his 4th year as a starter. Backing him up ia redshirt junior George Lemery redshirt freshman Irving Dole - both these guys will be a force in later years. At guard, redshirt junior Donnell Glancy (18 KRBs in his first year as a starter) and senior Victor Sawyer return (16 KRBs). A lot of depth here as well as Benjamin Alcott, Dwayne Frederickson, Mario Fiteny and Ty Shields are all ready to step in if needed. At tackle we're a little light. Harvey Roberts returns (12 KRBs) along with J.T. Styles (2 starts last year, 9 KRBs). Redshirt freshman Floyd Podbevsek is our lone backup, as we'd like to TRY to redshirt true freshmen Craig Walters and Daniel Parra. Overall we're not extremely skilled on the line, but we have a lot of depth (except at tackle) and experience. Special Teams Code:
Sophomore Blake Wynn returns as punter (34.7 avg last year). He should improve. Alex Alley is our plackicker (5 of 7 on FGs, 31 of 32 on PATs). Like Wynn, he should get better. Defensive Line Code:
DE Mike Gardner returns for his 3rd year as a starter. He had 7 sacks last year in 9 starts (due to injury) as wells as 16 TFLs and 9 hurries. On the other side we'll mix it up between returning starter T.J. Castillo (7.5 sacks and 13 TFLs last year) and redshirt freshman Steve Jett (Top 20 recruit in 2011). Steve has looked great in camp and we're anxious to see how he responds in-game. True soph Zach Flannery will be a backup while we hope to redshirt Jerry McKnight. At tackle, Johnny Rose returns with the most experience, but it's not much (19 games, 3 starts, 7 tackles, 1 sack). Not sure what we're going to do with this group, but it worries me that we don't have that guy in the middle to plug in and stop the run. Linebackers Code:
As reported earlier, Sherman Lee worked his magic and got his grades up enough to return for his final year. Coming out of high school unranked by the large recruiting services, Sherman has done well for himself - 30 starts, 184 tackles, 71 assists and 29 TFLs (12 last year). He continues to improve and is our best ILB. Paired with Sherman, we have Ron Levine who has lots and lots of talent, he just needs to grow. This will be his 2nd season as a fulltime starter. Lots of depth at this position as well as potential for the future. On the outside, we have returning starters Arnold Galvin and Hugh Barton - both are excellent. Buddy Foudray will back them up, and we hope to redshirt monster OLB Lamar Lazetti. We're very pleased the way he played in camp and we predict big things for him. Secondary Code:
Starters Howie Shelton (1 interception, 5 passes defensed) and Myron Fulcher return (7 passes defensed). Both are true juniors and have progressed quickly in our system. Fred Mueller will back-up, but will be ready to start when Howie and Myron graduate. Wesley Folsom will redshirt, and I'm going to try to get Roman Creaser to do so as well. At safety, J.J. Soper is a stud, and Sam Yunker isn't far behind. Both are in their last year, so Rob Pendergrass and Blake Garrison will have to learn quickly despite both being redshirted. Recruiting Goals: QB, RB, FB (2), WR, C, G, T (2), DE, DT (2), ILB, OLB, CB, S No real pressing need besides FB, T and DT. Otherwise we're just looking to follow the path . Opening Recruiting Salvo
Recruiting
As usual, we take a look at the in-state prospects... There's a Top 30 guard out of Hagerstown, but we don't offer his major. A top 200 runningback is in the area, but he wants to get as far away from MD as possible. Perhaps we can help him think otherwise . The 3rd best player in-state idolizes Navy. Ugh. Oh well...the in-state prospects look kind of murky this year. |

Week 1 - Navy
Recruiting
Tim Burnett, RB, Maryland, #188 Ty Giles, DT, Maryland, #973 Tyrus Kraus, CB, Delaware, #251 Michael Conley, FB, Maryland Shannon Kingston, WR, Virginia, #732 Barry Sweeney, DT, New Jersey, #143 Glenn Peterson, DT, Pennsylvania, #435 Jeff Pettigrew, ILB, Delaware, #708 Frankie Humphrey, T, Maryland, #513 Injuries None #26 Navy (0-0) at Maryland (0-0) (-6), TV5 Navy leads the series, 2-0 Last Meeting: 2009 - Navy 24, Maryland 14 Nothing like the first game of the season! Optimism running rampant, and a very good Navy team visits College Park, MD. Navy is led by All-Independent DE Wendell Gaddis (11.5 sacks last year) and a lockdown secondary consisting of two outstanding cornerbacks (senior Henry Dixon and redshirt freshman Leslie Frizzell). Offensively, they have very little experience at any of the skill positions. Their QB with the most experience threw 17 passes last year, and none of their wide receivers have ever started. Hopefully we've caught Navy in a down year, though their #26 ranking doesn't show it. We REALLY need to get off to a good start this year, as it will set us down the path towards our first winning record in a long, long time. For us, we're looking this year to be the Dennis Booty and Fernando Angell show. It'll be up to perennial disappointment Shawn Davidson to get them the ball, and we're hoping to see him turn it around this year. We shall see... At runningback we're a little thin - Cris Harper will start, but he only has 26 carries in his career (for only 68 yards). Let's get this one started! The Game We win the toss, elect to receive and start on our own 20. Our first offensive play of the year ends in an offensive holding call. Ugh. Harper follows with a run up the gut for 6 yards. 38,800 are attending the game...I'd like to break 40k. Davidson finds Angell open and connects for a 7 yard gain, bringing up 3rd and 7. Davidson fades back and finds Robbins (who?) open for a 10 yard gain and a first down! On the next play, Davidson throws to Booty for 19 yards! Holy moley, Davidson is hot! Harper runs off LG for a yard, at that brings up 2nd and 9 at the Navy 47. Morton drops a pass, and that's Davidson's first incompletion of the year. On 3rd and 9 Davidson throws long and gets it to Otis for 21 yards and a first down! Man, Shawn is really spreading it around today . On 1st and 10, we try a sweep and the blocking disintegrates for Harper, dropping him for a 6 yard loss. 2nd and 16 at the 32. We surprise them with a run up the guy and Willis (?) gains 15 yards! Who are these guys?! On 3rd and 1, Willis gets the yard we need, and we get a new set of downs. Harper gets the ball and runs off our LG Roberts who makes a key block. Harper breaks it, and scampers for the 16 yard TD! Nice drive - took 5:55! Maryland 7, Navy 0. Navy starts their drive on their own 29. Let's see how our defense holds up. Our safety, Shelton, cheats on the first play and drops their RB for a 1 yard loss. 2nd and 11. J.J. Soper makes the play on the 2nd play and hold Navy's RB to a 2 yard gain. 3rd and 7. Sherman Lee makes the stop on the next running play, stopping Navy 2 yards short of a first down. 3 and out! We start our next drive at our 35. Let's see if we can do this again! On 1st and 10, Davidson throws his first poor pass of the year and underthrows Angell. 2nd and 10. Harper gets 5 by running it up the gut. On 3rd and 5, Davidson drops back and is sacked by Wendell Gaddis, their all-conference DE. Oh well, we have to punt. A nice return gives Navy the ball at our 47. Navy runs a nice option and gains 9 yards on first down. Navy's O'Donnell takes it around the other end and we get fooled. 26 yards later, Navy has it first and 10 at our 12 yard line. Oh well, I neer thought this game was going to be easy. 3 plays later, Boege finds Fleming in the end zone for an 8 yard TD. Navy 7, Maryland 7 - 2:48 left in the 1st Another touchback gives us the ball at our 20. Davidson takes it himself on the QB Draw and nets 4 yards on first down. Ugh...another holding penalty. 2nd and 16. We try to make it up in one play, but Gaddis slips through the cracks and gets his 2nd sack of the day. Ugh. 3rd and 24 at our own 6. Davidson finds Esposito open, but the 7 yard gain is way short of the first down. Navy's going to get good field position . Nice, a 48 yard punt and a fair catch! Navy starts at their 39. A short pass to O'Donnell in the flat paired with some nifty moves nets Navy 12 yards on first down. Navy tries the option again and this time we read it perfectly, dropping their runningback for a 6 yard loss. 2nd and 16, and the first quarter is over. Navy 7, Maryland 7 Ugh, ugh, ugh. Borge finds Fleming on a post patters and completes the pass for a 48 yard gain, down to our 7. O'Donnell loses 3 yards on first down. A nice option play gains 8, and it's 3rd and goal on the 2. Navy gets cocky and runs a reverse. Obviously we never saw it coming and Navy gets it in the end zone for the 14-7 lead. Navy 14, Maryland 7 - 13:15 left in the 2nd quarter. Another touchback. False Start, Maryland. Good grief. Davidson fades back, finds no one and somehow scrambles for 7 yards. 2nd and 8. Harper gets the carry and is stopped cold for a 2 yard loss. 3rd and 10. Davidson finds Booty on the next play but Booty is stopped one yard short. On the other side of the field, Fernando Angell is hurt and the PA announcer says it looks serious. Ugh. Navy starts on their own 49. Man, they are easily winning the field position battle. They move the ball a bit, but are stopped on our 37 yard line. A holding penalty pushes them back further, and we start our next drive at our own 18 yard line - 8:47 left in the half. Our sputtering offense returns to the field minus one of our bigtime receivers, Fernando Angell. It's time for Booty to take over. A one yard loss on the running play to Harper is followed up with an 18 yard completion to Morton. Perhaps Morton is the heir apparent? On the next play, Davidson finds Schroeder open and connects for a 20 yard gain. 1st and 10 in Navy territory! Harper runs off tackle for 3. Willis runs off Roberts' block and gains 10! 1st and 10 at the Navy 32. Davidson connects with Schroeder again for 17 yards! A pass to the TE Otis is complete for 7. 2nd and 3 at the Navy 8. Offensive holding. ARGH! Incompletion. 3rd and 14 at the 19. Davidson fades back to pass, but everyone is covered. Davidson scrambles for 6 yards, bringing up 4th and 8. The 30 yard FG attempt is good. Navy 14, Maryland 10 Navy starts on their 29 yard line with 3:50 left in the half. Two 3 yard runs and then a 1 yard loss equals a 3 and out, and we get the ball back at our 27 with 2:12 left. 3 and out for us as well, highlighted by a Frizzell sack. An average punt and a good return gives Navy the ball at our 40 with 47 seconds left. They move the ball to our 34, but we stop them on a 4th and short. With 11 seconds left, we shouldr un out the clock. We do. Halftime: Navy 14, Maryland 10 Total Yards: Navy 142, Maryland 181 Navy starts the second half at their own 15. 3 and out for Navy, as they can muster nothing. Fortunately for us, that means good field position - we start at the Navy 46. Harper runs up the middle for 2 on first down. Davidson's pass is hurried by Gaddis (I hate that guy) and falls harmlessly to the ground. 3rd and 8. Davidson passes to Robbins who falls right on the first down marker - just enough to give us a new set of downs. Otis gets the next pass from Davidson and gains another 8 to the Navy 28. Harper gets the call on 2nd down and responds with a 5 yard gain. False start, Maryland. Harper gets 3 on 1st and 15. Harper only gets a yard on his next carry, and it's 3rd and 11. A trap to Harper yields a 3 yard loss. Ugh...that pushes us out to the 27 yard line. 44 yard FG attempt? Nope - we go for it, and fail (Gaddis again hurries Davidson). sigh. Navy has it at their 27. Incompletion, 3 yard loss, 6 yard gain - 3 and out. Our defense is doing the job. We get the ball back at our 45, 6:52 left in the 3rd. Harper gets the call and gains a yard. Willis carries forward for 6 yards, 3rd and 3. Harper falls on the wet field and only gets one of the three yards we need. We have to punt again. Navy ball at their 20. Ugh, Boege fades back and finds Fleming for another deep completion - gain of 33. O'Donnell gets the carry, and is held to a yard (12 carries, 29 yards on the day). O'Donnell runs up the middle, finds a hole, and is dragged down after 11 yards. 1st and 10 at our 35. An option play nets 3 yards and an injury for our DE Jett. It appears to be serious. Another option, but we were ready and hold them to no gain. 3rd and 7 at our 32. Boege finds O'Donnell open over the middle, connects, and O'Donnell falls forward for the first down. On the way down, he fumbles the ball but Navy recovers. 1st and 10 at our 25. 3 plays later, it's 4th and 2 at our 17. To open the 4th quarter, Navy kicks a 34 yard FG to stretch their lead to 17-10. 14:54 left in the game. Ok, we get the ball back and will start our next drive at the 21. Harper gets the call and again is stopped for a single yard. 2nd and 9. Davidson finds Otis on 2nd down for an 8 yard pass. 3rd and 1. Willis is handed the ball and he pushes through for six yards. 1st and 10 at the 36. Harper gains 3 on first down (18 carries, 37 yards). Davidson takes it himself on the QB draw - 5 yard gain. 3rd and 2. Incomplete pass. The one-man wrecking crew that is Gaddis hurried Davidson yet again. 4th down and the punt unit comes on the field - 11:48 left in the game. Navy ball, at their own 33. Boege goes deep but finds the wrong uniform. We catch him in a 3-deep zone, and Fulcher intercepts the ball and then zigzags his way all the way in for a 66 yard interception return!! Touchdown, Maryland! Navy 17, Maryland 17 - 11:26 left in the game. A 47 yard KR return by Schwartz has Navy starting their drive at midfield. An option to O'Donnell is read by Sutter and Hugh Barton, dropping him for a 2 yard loss. The next play O'Donnel carries the ball and J.J. Soper and Sam Yunker come up from the secondary to make the stop after a 2 yard gain. 3rd and 10 at the 50. Boege fades back and finds O'Donnell open for 11 yards. ARGH. 1st and 10 at our 39. O'Donnell carries for 3 yards. An option to O'Donnell nets another 3. Man, he has to be getting tired. Boege finds Sims open and connects for 9 yards. 1st and 10 at our 24. O'Donnell loses 3 off the left tackle. Sims is open again and Boege finds him for 16 yards. Dang! We're stopping the run, but not these stupid pass plays. 1st and 10 at our 11 - 7:01 left in the game. False start, Navy. Oh look, they can get called for penalties too! O'Donnell runs up the middle and loses 2 yards. J.J. Soper and Sherman Lee make the stop. Boege connects with Fleming for 5 yards, bringing up a big 3rd and 12 at our 13. They play it safe, and handoff to O'Donnell for 3 yards. 4th and 9 at the 10. The FG unit comes on and succeeds on the 27 yard FG. Navy 20, Maryland 17 - 5:31 left in the game. The Navy placekicker kicks the ball through the end zone, so we'll start at our 20. Davidson fades back on first and 10 and throws to the sure-handed TE Otis for 7 yards. 2nd and 3. Our offensive coordinator calls pass again, and this time Davidson throws it to Dennis Booty for a 20 yard pass play! 1st and 10 at our 47. 4:20 left in the game. Harper runs offtackle and collects 3 yards. 2nd and 7 on the 50. Davidson fades back but his main target is double covered - he throws to Esposito, but he's brought down for a 1 yard loss. 3rd and 8 now - and possibly the biggest play of the game. Remember to block Gaddis! In a surprising move against the 4-deep dime defense, Harper gets the call and follows Clancy's block towards an 8 yard gain and a first down! Gutsy call! 2:12 left in the game, Maryland ball on the Navy 43. Ugh. Gaddis and Middletown combine for the sack on first down. 1:53 left. Davidson fades back in the pocket and finds Schroeder with a step on his man. Davidson throws and the pass is completed for a 29 yard gain down to the Navy 20! 1:30 left. On first down, Willis gets the call and is dropped for a 3 yard loss. 2nd and 13 at the 23 - 1:06 left. Harper runs of the right guard and is stopped immediately by Gaddis (who else?). 1 yard loss. 49 seconds left at the 24. Same play on 3rd down, different result. Willis gets it this time, finds a hole and is finally dragged down at the Navy 7! 1st and goal at the 7, 39 seconds left. Maryland timeout. Apparently, butterflies have been breeding unchecked in my stomach. Harper gets the call is stopped for no gain. Maryland calls their 2nd time out. 28 seconds left. Harper tries one more time and this time loses a yard. 3rd and goal at the 8 - 16 seconds left. The 25 yard FG attempt is good! Navy 20, Maryland 20 - 8 seconds left in the game. Navy returns the kickoff, but they're stopped at the 33. End of regulation, this one's going to overtime! Gulp! Overtime We start the ball at their 25. Davidson's first pass is underthrown (this is no time for the "old" Davidson to come out). Willis gets the carry and bursts through for an 11 yard gain! 1st and 10 at the Navy 14. Navy offsides! 1st and 5 at the 9. Harper gains a yard running offtackle. 2nd and 4. Harper gains 2 on the next play, and our best tackle, Roberts, gets hurt. On 3rd and 2, Davidson fades back and we're alarmed to see his #1 receiver is double-covered. He checks off and fires a bullet to Esposito for the 6 yard TD! THAT'S what we expect our of Shawn! Maryland 27, Navy 20 - Navy gets to answer. Navy starts by running a reverse to George and it nets them 4 yards. O'Donnell runs off the left guard but is stopped immediately for no gain by Stills and Yunker. 3rd and 6. O'Donnell gets it again and is stopped cold by Castillo. 4th and 6 . 8 yard pass completed to Fleming. Damn! 1st and 10 at the 13. O'Donnell goes offtackle for 3. O'Donnell is dropped by Castillo for a 2 yard loss. 3rd and 9 at the 12. We have to be tired at this point. Boege takes it himself, but is stopped after a 2 yard gain. 4th and 7 . False Start, Navy! 4th and 12. Boege fades back, finds his target in Rivers and Shelton steps in to defend the pass - incomplete! We win! We win! Maryland 27, Navy 20, Final-OT Code:

I think Kris Esposito will be able to pick up the slack, and Hunter Schroeder has shown some value as a 4th WR as well. West Virginia (0-1) at Maryland (1-0) (-7), no TV Maryland leads the series, 5-4 Last Meeting: 2011 - Maryland 34, West Virginia 28 West Virginia lost at #21 Auburn last week, 21-14, so they made a good showing there. Realistically, we should beat them rather handily, but this Maryland team has been all over the map, so I'm not sure what to expect. No one on West Virginia really stands out, their starting QB is a walk-on (Renaldo Roundtree) - a top 1000 recruit walk-on. Go figure. Nothing really stands out about their team, so we should be ripe for the upset loss. Code:
As usual, we make it interesting. Our offense was outgained, 357-219. Very disappointing. They pretty much ran all over us, though we did pick up 5 sacks to their zero. Cris Harper's not really getting it done as our #1 RB. Davidson has a pretty miserable game as well. Gardner and Castillo each had two sacks apiece. We had amassed 63 yards on 21 plays by halftime...took us a long time to get involved in this one. Wow, Davidson and Booty looked awesome today (it's about time for Dennis). We outgained them 515 to 246 and passed for 377 yards. Obviously a great day for our offense and hopefully one to grow on.
