Is this Calvin all grown up?

If you are a Calvin and Hobbes fan, check out the following link:

hxxp://www.comics.com/comics/frazz/

Read back through the archives, it has the same type of writing as Calvin and Hobbes. The author is listed as Jef Mallett. The similarity is eerie. Is this an early 20s Calvin, post childhood? Is Bill Watterson using a pseudonym? Or is it just a rabid fan paying tribute through a cartoon strip of his own?

Not quite- nice hope for a second there, however. And the musician angle is not Calvin at all.

One thing that makes me think it's not Watterson using a pseudonm is the on-line store where you can get a shirt, mousepad, or coffe mug with Frazz on it. Watterson was very much against that sort of thing. He never licensed Calvin and Hobbes for cards, toys, shirts, anything. I remember reading somewhere that he would be horrified to see an actual stuffed Hobbes doll...

If it's not Watterson, it's clear where the author got his inspiration!

Yep. That was one of the things that drove him to quit, although it was mostly artistic freedom. He didn't like being confined to standard formats for his strip and didn't like how papers were shrinking the area for each comic. He felt like it restricted comic strip writers to a series of talking heads, instead of more artistically rich strips.

Last time I read the comics in the newspaper is when C&H called it quits.

What comic strip artist of the last decade didn't get his inspiration from Watterson (or Larson, Trudeau or Breathed)?

Yup= as he put it, he didnt want some stuffed toy maker defining Hobbes' existence. While Im an unabashed capitalist, I admire people who are willing to stick to their principals at all cost.

Frazz has been my very favorite strip for the past three years.

Cartman, where were you when I and others made this exact same comment a few times in the past couple years?

Don't know, I must have missed 'em... I just "discovered" Frazz the other day. But as they say, "Great minds think alike"...

This is from an article about Watterson that I found on a different message board...

"A vulgar counterfeit," says Jef Mallett, a Calvin and Hobbes fan whose own strip, Frazz, resembles Watterson's style.

He was talking about those stupid Calvin peeing on stuff stickets, by the way...

I just checked out the past month's worth of this strip, and my first impression is that it's too much like C&H. He looks exactly like Calvin, the writing is the same style (not that that's a bad thing), there are a few antagonists to replace Hobbes... heck, even the sports with made-up rules thing is in there.

I don't know. I want to like it, but I get a "been there, done that" feeling that I can't shake.

Frazz is to Calvin and Hobbes what Kingdom Come was to Led Zepplin.

Ha! I didn't want to go there, but you might be right. I haven't read enough of them to say that conclusively, but I just saw a young kid in one of the strips (June 9th, I think) that looks even more like Calvin than Frazz does - complete with the same drawn open mouth and everything.

I use that comparison all the time in just the way you did. Kingdome Clone!

I can still remember when they first hit the scene - they're first single Get It On hit the airwaves at the exact time as Robert Plant released Now & Zen, and everyone assumed that that song was his first single. The backlash against them was immediate and harsh.

Of course, I bought that album. But I stayed away from the follow-up - Kingdome Come In Your Face.
