When did the CB Position Officially Change to DC?
Was I asleep? All of these draft publications, ESPN.com and such are calling people DC Deltha O'Neal and DC DeAngelo Hall. What does DC even stand for? Defensive Corner? Did some random podunk team in Montana create an Offensive Corner position, and now we need to distinguish?

Hmmm ... I haven't seen any reference like that, but I haven't looked real closley. My initial guess would be that it refers to a Dime Cornerback. It's usually a Dime Back, but that would make it a DB, which would be confusing since that usually refers to corners and safeties.
But that's just a guess. |

You're not alone in your questioning. Truth is, coaches are the worst at "creating" new names for positions.
H-back, tailback, running back, quarterback, fullback, I-back, wingback, slotback, halfback, X,Y,Z, flanker, tight end, split end, wide receiver, slot, weak tackle, strong tackle, quick tackle, swing tackle, onside tackle, backside tackle, backside guard, onside guard, swing guard, weak guard, quick guard. Defense is even worse. Coaches create "monster backs" and such. I've been to a coaching clinic where one of the coaches I went with had no idea what Len and Rip were (it stands for left linebacker and right linebacker). A great book that would prove just how different coaches are is "Football's Best Offensive Playbook". Each page is from a different coach, and of course has different terminology. The fun part is trying to figure out just what the heck they're talking about, because it's not always explained.

Don't forget Elephant, Rover, Spy, Invert, Mike, long snapper, wedge breaker, protector, holder, nickle back, dime back,
I can't remeber the names for the guy who sprints down on punts, or the guys who are designated to block that guy) |

Guess I didn't actually answer the question. Yes, it stands for defensive corner.

Okay, howza bout an example then:
This is from Scouts Inc.: "Despite adding DC Deltha O'Neal in their recent trade with the Broncos, the Bengals still are targeting a cornerback with the 24th pick. Cincinnati is hopeful a change of scenery will help O'Neal bounce back from a dismal 2003 season, but the Bengals can't rely on that. There is even more concern about depth after Dennis Weathersby's serious car accident this month. If Ohio State DC Chris Gamble is gone by the time they pick, the Bengals could be targeting USC's Will Poole or Arkansas' Ahmad Carroll with their top selection." As you can see, they say "cornerback" but use the DC abbreviations. -Anxiety

Now that I think of it, there was a football statistic that used to float around more often than it does now, PBU.
2 cents to the person that correctly tells me what it stands for without looking it up.

Check's in the mail. I first saw that when I was 14, and couldn't for the life of me figure it out. Two years later, and I'm playing football, I ask my football coach. He had no idea.

That, I don't know. I don't think they get much love. Probably your other standard fare 'returners' of some kind? Not quite sure, to be honest.

The only way I recognized it was from seeing a particular school's stat summaries last year & they used it from time to time (same school also abbreviated TFL as one of their defensive stats). |

PRBF = Punt Returner's Best Friend This reminded me of a great snippet from Jim Caple's article on the world's greatest athlete on Page 2 the other day: "Speaking of which, it's a good thing the NFL got rid of that halo rule, because obviously returning punts -- standing poised for the ball while 260-pound players who can bench press 400 pounds and run 4.6 40s prepare to smack you as hard as they can from a running start -- had become far too easy." |
