Almighty Farms II: The Race is On

The waiting is finally over. Racing is right over the horizon, but first, some intro and background to get you caught up and to introduce new readers, if any, to what this is about.

From Almighty Farms: Triple Crown Bound- post 1

Quote:
What this is, really, is a horse racing/breeding/whatever dynasty. We will be attempting to take a fledgling horse stable and turn it in to the #1 stable in the world, or the USA, depending.

To do this, we will be using Final Stretch: Horse Racing Sim, otherwise known as The Sport of Kings or Horse Racing Manager, depending on where in the world you are. In the sim, you start off as an unknown stable with limited funds available (a problem, as you will see below) and try to raise your status to the top by purchasing, breeding and racing the horses you have. That is the bare bones outlook of what will happen. We shall see.

Well, that's the game we are using. There were/are some bugs in the game, so let's get this said now. From Almighty Farms: Triple Crown Bound- post 2

Quote:
Soooo, that is the plan, we will cheat to get start-up money and see what happens from there, realizing that this is a somewhat corrupted dynasty from the start and not pretending otherwise.

I tried to play the game straight, but couldn't make a go of it due to poor design, bugs in gameplay, and so on, as partially described in Almighty Farms: Triple Crown Bound. The start up money came from wagering on races before I really began with my gameplay, so there you go.

With that out in the open, not pretending I have made some magnificent gameplay decisions to get all I now have, we begin year 2, Almighty Farms II: The Race is On.

To see what has transpired in year 1, click Here.

Almighty Farms is located just outside Dallas. It is "an enjoyable location. The forest nearby increases fame but raises infrastructure costs."

Fame is how you are measured in competition with the other stables, vying to become the top rated site. You gain fame through infrastructure value (explanations forthcoming), value of the horses you own and the purses (gains) they win through racing.

At present, Almighty Farms is ranked 79th out of 151 total stables with a fame rating of 52.

We currently have 8 employees and 6 horses. We have 20 boxes, which is the maximum allowed. Boxes are where you keep the horses, either yours or others you board for a weekly fee.

Responsibilities are as follows:
  1. Staff Manager- overseer of the staff. More competent managers have more organizational points to use.

  2. Assistant- secretary type person. Handles administrative tasks. Each employee hired takes one organization point from the points available.

  3. Maintenance Staff- keeps buildings and training facilities in working order. Buildings 'cost' a number of organization points to keep operating. The more buildings, the more maintenance workers are needed to keep the farm running and the facilities available for use.

  4. Stableman- takes care of the horses and watches over their diet needs. The more organizational points they come with, the more competent they are in this task.

  5. Trainers- one of the people/methods available for training horses. Trainers have 6 possible training areas they can work with a horse to improve it. Again, the higher the organizational points he/she comes with, the more competent he/she is.

  6. Lad- a training jockey, the most complete (and confusing) way to train a horse. Lads have 8 categories in their training, including resting. Training by a lad can be done very specifically, with changes being made weekly as needed. Lads are the only employee with a set of statistics which are for each of their 8 training areas. You can choose a specific lad to train a certain horse based on the proficiencies the lad has, matched to the needs of the horse.
We needed more than one assistant because we have more employees than one of them has organization points.

We have 3 maintenance people since our infrastructure is almost completed at this point, and more buildings means more need for maintenance organization points.

We have no lad because it is too hard to figure out what to do on a weekly basis with the level of help available in the manual or on the now pretty dead forum site. If we become more at ease with training, maybe we will look into hiring one.

Infrastructure:

The following upgrades and/or buildings have either been built or are in the process of being built:
  • Boxes- allow the hosting of horses, yours or others, up to a maximum of 20.
  • Hanger- reduces the cost of food for horses.
  • Mechanization- improves the efficiency of the maintenance staff.
  • Saddlery- improves the efficiency of the maintenance staff and increases fame.
  • Paddock- increases the efficiency of rest periods of the horses.
  • Career- improves the efficiency of fitness exercises and increases fame.
  • Horsemanship- increases fame.
  • Riding Alley- improves the efficiency of fitness training and increases fame.
  • Straight Line- improves the efficiency of speed training and increases fame.
  • Loop Track- improves the efficiency behavior training, adaptation to being ridden by a jockey and increases fame.
  • Circle of Tether- aids in the taming of new horses and increases fame.
  • Mechanical Walker- improves the efficiency of the fitness exercises.
  • Grooming Room- reduces food costs and increases fame.
  • Solarium- improves the efficiency of fitness work and significantly increases fame.
  • Pool- reduces the time a horse cannot train after injury and increases fame.
  • Club House- allows hosting of other stable horses and increases fame.
  • Staff Buildings- improves the efficiency of the maintenance staff

When any building is unavailable for use, due to weather or whatever, the above attributes are negatively effected, causing a less than possible gain from training.

There are no other available infrastructure or buildings in the game. All are, or will be, available soon.

Bug, the assistants have a different organizational duty than the manager. They are in charge of a group of employees, up to 6 in the case of H. Selki, so the organization number is the total number of people they can watch over, not related to the number of a staff manager.

On the other hand, the staff manager has an organization number that 'describes' their ability to oversee the operations. The best a staff manager can be is a 3, so Hans is, at 3, as good as it gets.

I hope that answered the question. It sounds kinda weird when I read it back to myself.

I am hoping Beautiful Ladonia will be a monster. Of course, I look at them all and say, " _____ has this, but not that, and ______ has this and that, but worse in this" and so forth until I can convince myself they are all champions, or mostly dog food, too.

Course, I have yet to get a look at the kind of stats the National and International horses have, especially when they have been trained for years. We'll have to work our way up.

---> The new year arrives and our horses are now 2- year olds. They are ready to race immediately. Training will begin as well.

---> We are down to 3 'planning' dots which will be used to improve training for our stock. Since we have 3 dots and 6 horses, we choose to begin supporting Beautiful Ladonia, Ursulo and Imperatrice. The other 3 will get a turn, perhaps month by month.

---> Our buildings are valued at $1,117,200.

---> Fame has moved up to 54. We are now alone in 75th place, out of 151 stables.

Horse Values:
Our horses have a market value, the price our manager claims we would ask to sell them for if we placed an advertisement. The values are as follows:
  1. Feline - $1,280,397
  2. Imperatrice - $1,275,637
  3. Beautiful Ladonia - $1,257,303
  4. Ursulo - $1,242,007
  5. Hold - $1,184,716
  6. Favorite - $1,109,092
I was rather shocked to see Feline, our newest purchase, as the value leader, but it just shows how much I need to learn about this game.

In terms of everyday expenses, money is not a problem. However, if we go to another auction in the hopes to purchase any more stock, we will need an infusion soon. I have to believe that the first race that Beautiful Ladonia runs would be an opportune time to make a wager of, say, a million - or 2.

Feed:

Another in the list of new things to worry about, now that our horses are training and racing, is feeding them. It is way more complicated than it might seem at first.

There are 8 types of feed that are mixed together to get the right combination for each particular horse: grass, hay, straw, beets, carrots, oats, bran and cattle cakes (whatever the hell that is). Each type can be combined from 1 to 5 parts to make up the overall mix that a particular horse needs to be fully healthy and train at 100%. If my math is correct, that gives you 390,625 possible combinations to try.

The problem is that you don't know how much of each type to use. There is a dietician who comes a couple times a year. Each appointment he has, he will give you the correct amount of one of the 8 feed types, so it could take 4 years to get the right mix.

The health of the horse will be updated, based on the mix of feed, every week. Problems are numerous, and include: weight loss or gain, appetite loss, uneven or poor recovery, temporary nervousness, slight diarrhea (slight- for a big-ass horse?), bulimic tendencies, moodiness, apoplexy and nervousness. See what I mean.

Each of the feeds controls one or more of the problems, either by itself or in combination with another (this is my own opinion from looking at the results of changing feed amounts a few times). Each week the dietician does not come, you can tweak the 8 feed amounts to try to improve the health.

The longer it takes to get the perfect combination of feeds, the more chance a horse will become ill, and the lower the effects of training will be.

Damn, enough of that for now.

Custom Follow-Up:

This is what the game calls the area where you have appointments with specialists. There are three types you can make appointments with "to take care of or improve the health of your horses."

Each specialty has 4 ranks of efficiency and cost. Obviously, I see no reason to use any but the best for our stock. The three types of specialists are:
  1. Shoe Marshal- 6 times a year you can have your horses reshod. Doing so will keep the horse from a greater chance of injury. The shoeing will degrade over time, so you need to keep an eye on the quality so you can make a new appointment.
  2. Bone Doctor- 4 times a year you may make an appointment to take care of any injuries that a horse may have incurred.
  3. Vet- "intervenes if the horse is sick or injured," says the manual. I don't know if this is automatic every time a horse contracts an illness or injury, but I guess we will find out, unfortunately, eventually.
This is also the area where you can give instructions on several preferences of a horse, such as blinkers, ear plugs and companions. Companions are little bunnies that keep the horse company in their box. Each of these preference choices will aid in the racing capacity of the horse.

Training:

As reported in Almighty Farms: Triple Crown Bound, training can be a total bore, a bit of thought or a big headache.
  1. Total Bore- just pick to train strengths or weaknesses and go.
  2. Bit o Thought- use the trainer and put %s in categories given.
  1. Big Headache- hire a lad and have to pick a weekly charting of training type for the months/years the horse is trained, keeping up with what you have or have not trained enough, how long a rest period you gave, etc....
I have chosen option 'b'. I have hired the best trainer I could and have selected the percentages for each category available for this type of effort- endurance, speed, behavior, technique, acceleration and preferences.

Preferences are unknown and include position, inside, ground, surface, distance, companion, blinkers and ear plugs. Companion, blinkers and ear plugs are obvious or already covered. Inside, I have no fucking idea what it is. Position I suppose is in the pack; ground is muddy or dry; surface is dirt, grass and so on; distance is long or short. Through training, you will eventually 'discover' the preferences for each individual horse and can enter them in races that fit their style to increase their effectiveness in racing.

Something I've been meaning to ask...I know you live in Dallas. I grew up in South Oak Cliff and Lancaster (I live in Austin now), so I know the area. Erm, does this game know that the nearest forest is in Athens?????

Lokugh, they may have a different definition for Dallas than, say, Germany.

nfg22, I have seen some races run in the game now and have seen the importance of passing ability if you want to win, which is what technique supposedly pertains to. You get stuck in a group, you better have some burst to pass those you got stuck behind.

01-02-04: Race Day

It's the first day of the racing for the year, so we trot out all 6 of our horses and put them in seperate goes. FYI, 2600m is considered a very long race, so those with less stamina will fare more poorly, but most should do well as all opponents are of the lowest category, Listed.

Favorite breaks quickly into the lead but is soon caught in a bunch and hemmed in on the rail in 4th place. Around the 2nd turn the pack breaks up with Favorite moving outside and into 3rd place. She drops 2 lengths off the pace through the 3rd turn and DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME with Favorite moving clear and putting on a charge. 2 lengths back and still moving up. 1 back and on she comes to the wire... it's Favorite winning by a nose. Sly leader is second.

Hooray and a woot, woot...

Now, I need feedback on the "display."

Is it too cluttered? Should I do the prerace stuff in one post, then the race and aftermath stuff?

Too much color? Just go plain-jane (not to be confused with G.I. Jane) or maybe have color to highlight certain areas?

What do the dozen or so that ever read and post in here think about it?

Or do I keep it like it is?

What say you?

Oh yeah. The race is hard to watch and write down stuff at the same time, so the race write-up part won't ever be much. What do you think about the commentary section? Keep at it or what?

maybe in the future of big races you could put all the information of all the horses in the race? not needed for every race but when your running with top level horses it would be neat to compare them to your horse.

condors, that's alot of numbers in a race with, often, 14 or more horses. Maybe just the basics on each would work. Course, I don't know what constitutes a big race, really, at this point.

Kevin, I wondered about that, too, but all the races the first week were at 2600m so I didn't have any choice if I wanted to run them.

klayman, thanks.

nfg22, I wasn't sure how to write it- put the total I got back (in this case, $153,291) or the amount I actually won (the $53,291). Is it proper etiquette to put the bet amount in the won amount, too? The game does this, but I wasn't sure.

kingfc22, amen.

You have to run all races on a day without stop (can't run one, save, run again, reboot if race sucks) instead of one at a time, so I actually know the outcomes of the other 5 races already.

Thanks for reading and, especially, posting.

I made a profit of $53,291, but the way the game, and apparently some gambling afficionados do it, you count the wager as part of the payout, so the game gives a payout total of $153,291.

Keep it up. This is pretty interesting. I wonder if I can find this game by me in the bargin bin. Sounds fun, bugs and all. One thing that is curious is that, the odds on Fav was 29-2 right? Souldn't the payout be ALOT more??? Maybe I'm missing something.

Junior 19, the payout was so low because I didn't bet to WIN, but to SHOW. That means I placed her in 3rd, so the payoff wasn't for a winner, which of course would have been alot more.

Thanks for reading and posting.

Hold breaks with the pack and eases into the lead group of 5. Going into the 2nd turn, he is in 3rd, 1/2 a length back. Hold eases up a bit and goes into turn 3 one length behind, Dark Cowgirl leading the field. He stumbles back to 5th for a moment, realizes where he is and moves to the outside. AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME, Hold moving up on the outside, passing into 4th, then 3rd. Hold sweeps past Dark Cowgirl into second, still charging, moving up on the leader, Dauphin Des Vieux. On comes Hold like a demon. He passes Dauphin with meters to go to WIN.

I have already noticed a few more quirks, or whatever you would call them.

The weather and track conditions don't match from the set-up to the reality. Pre-race, it says one thing, like sunny, then you get into the race and it's raining. Or it is raining but it says the track is hard or dry or something like that.

Also, the files are apparently so limited that I have seen the same opponent running in more than one race against my horses- and these races are on the same day.

Another win!

Too bad it seems that the more you play this game the more and more it appears that it just isn't very deep.

kingfc22, you have to remember that these are races at the lowest level of competition- Listed, since my horses have not raced before. As they get more winnings, they will move up in level and the horses they run against will be more competitive.

Course, that may not mean anything in the long run, but that's what we will be finding out eventually.
