Hoops History: Marmel returns to FBCB
Recreating NCAA Basketball History
First, I need to state that this is not my original idea. A guy named Kingfish over at the FBCB forums is/was doing something pretty similar. I thought the idea was pretty good, and was pretty similar to an OOTP historic dynasty I did before (which died too early). Anyhow, this kind of thing seems to interest me so I thought I would do something similar with Fast Break College Basketball and create an alternate history of the game. My computer time has been somewhat limited lately, so don’t expect me to fly through a decade a day here, but I have already ran some of this (which I normally do before starting a dynasty to see if it holds my interest long enough) so there is a base of work here already. Setup: The year is 1930 and although the NCAA tournament seems to have officially started in 1939, I wanted to start a bit earlier than that, and also begin at the beginning of a decade, so here we are. FBCB ranks conference prestige on a scale of 1-5. Conferences like the ACC, Big 12, Big East, etc.. are ‘5’ and the worst conferences in the land are a 1. In this dynasty, all conferences will begin with a prestige of ‘2’. Individual team prestige in FBCB runs on a 0-100 scale, with teams like Duke, Syracuse, Kentucky, Kansas, etc… all in the 90’s and teams like Savannah State hovering just above 0. In this dynasty all teams begin with a prestige of 10. After all of this was done, the player and coaches universe was created, so all teams are starting out on equal footing with only the randomness of a created player/coach file differentiating them. Duke does not start out with a team of studs and Savannah does not have a team of walk-ons. A quick check around the league had teams having players rated from 7-43 on a 1-100 scale. There are no studs, but lots of average and below average players. Nobody has mastered the game yet. I assume the first draft class will have a bunch of studs, and the teams that land those have the early advantage in separating themselves from the pack. We’ll see how it goes. A couple other quick notes: No three point shot. It didn’t exist back then, so I eliminated it (it is an option) No play in game. I have not assumed control of a team. This is more of a bird’s eye view of things, or maybe a ‘God Mode’ if I find things start getting out of hand and need tweaking. Eventually I plan on taking a mature universe with a deep history and taking over a team, but I am talking 70 years of history first. Yeah, an optimistic view, but I promise this won’t die after 5 seasons. Year by year might be a little long winded, but for the first couple of seasons, I will give highlights, then I might move to a 5 year summary and decade summaries, etc… Basically, I am playing this by ear. Hope you enjoy. Feedback is encouraged, and I am always happy to answer questions.

1930
It is mid-November of 1930 and the inaugural NCAA season is about to begin, but there is some breaking news already! The NCAA Recruiting Committee has identified 8 premier High School Athletes who have expressed interest in playing for a school. Teams scrambled to land one of these prized recruits, as they may very well be the key to the future success of a team. SG Mitchel Just from Raymond, NH was ranked #1 overall and was being courted by many Northeast schools. In fact, due to the small budgets all NCAA teams have, only Northeast schools are recruiting him. Recruits are being recruited only locally at this point, for the most part. BU and Holy Cross were the favored teams, but Mitchel shocked us all by declaring for the NBA draft. He felt that the NCAA is such an unestablished program and his development would be better served in the pros. Also declaring for the draft were the 5th, 7th and 8th ranked recruits. That leaves 4 top ranked recruits for teams to fight over. #2 was SF Wade DeLoach from Cavalier, ND. Teams like Creighton, Northern Iowa, Drake, Minnesota and Nebraska were all heavily recruiting him. In the end, he chose Creighton! #3 was SF Berry Chaplin from Lexington, TN. He chose Florida State over the likes of Murray State, UNC A&T, and Belmont. That leaves 2 top recruits, and they have not decided where to play yet. SG Lyle Willette from Canton, NY is being courted by Oakland, Vermont, GW, Quinnipiac and Central Michigan. PF Tony Watson from Pagosa Springs, CO is being recruited by Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and UTEP.

The very first National Polls have also been released. They don’t mean a thing right now, but here they are anyways:

As we hit January 1931 a few conferences have begun their games and things are starting to shake out.
Our 2 remaining top rated recruits have declared which schools they are attending. PG Lyle Willette will be attending Oakland and PF Tony Watson will be going to Colorado. The polls are starting to take form, but I am sure there will be a lot of movement in the next two months as teams jockey for position in this all important first season.

The regular season is over and here is my attempt at a crude cut and paste of the NCAA brackets..... (more to come)

We have reached the end of the 1930-1931 regular season and as you can see the brackets have been released!
Prairie View A&M are the odds on favorites to win the tournament, although I really think any of these 64 teams can get it done. Everyone is so closely matched up right now in this initial season that luck might have as much to do with this as anything else. Those who advance the farthest though will be in great shape for recruiting next season as their prestige will surely be in the rise. Here is the season’s final Top 25 poll:
Here are a few leader boards at the end of the year: Points per game:
Rebounds per game:
Assists per game:
And now we are ready to tip off the tournament!

1930-1931 NCAA Tournament
Round One Highlights: Three of our #1 seeds survived the first round: Seton Hall, Prairie View and Fordham, but Top seeded Southern Utah in the West Region were beaten by San Diego State, 50-43. We had two #2 seeds go down in flames: Georgetown, in the East Region, were toppled by Boston University and Northern Iowa in the South was beaten by St. Francis-PA. The 3 seeds faired pretty well, with only Iona losing in the first round. Elon defeated them. The 4 seeds struggled, with only Akron winning their game against the 13th seeded UCLA Bruins. Round Two Highlights: The 3 remaining Top Seeds all advance into the Sweet 16. Seton Hall, Prairie View and Fordham are surviving the early tests, but what happened to the 16th seeded Aztecs? They fell in round 2 to Northern Arizona, 62-60. We do have some Cinderella teams in the Sweet 16, which is hardly a surprise this year. Here are your Sweet 16 matchups: In the West, #8 Arizona State faces #5 Cal State Northrigde, while #2 Loyola Marymount takes on #11 Idaho. In the Midwest, top ranked Prairie View faces 13th seeded Denver. Denver knocked off the 4 and 5 seeds, Minnesota and Kansas State to advance. #10 Bethune-Cookman and #11 Western Michigan square off on the other side of the bracket. In the South, #1 Seton Hall faces #13 Central Florida and #7 Campbell faces #6 Duquesne. Finally, in the East, Top seeded Fordham faces #13 Howard while #10 South Alabama takes on #3 Canisius. All three #1 seeds appear to have a pretty easy road to the Final Four, but with all the double digit seeds out there, it is obvious this is anybody’s game, or tournament.

Sweet Sixteen Highlights:
Starting out in the West, 8th seeded Arizona State advances to face one of our Cinderellas in 11th seeded Idaho. Although Northern Arizona has a slight advantage on paper, this game is wide open. In the Midwest, Prairie View cruised to a 18 point victory and will face 10th seeded Bethune-Cookman. Prairie looks primed to make the Final Four with this matchup. In the South, Top seeded Seton Hall rolled and will face #6 Duquesne in the Elite 8. This will probably be the best matchup of the round, although Seton Hall’s defense has been smothering opponents in the tournament, and being a 1 seed, they are obviously the favorites. Finally, in the East, the second #1 seed has fallen in this tournament. Howard defeated Fordham 55-46 to advance. Howard is the 13 seed and they will face 3rd seeded Canisius. Elite Eight Highlights: The first Regional Final matchup sees Prairie View take their #1 ranking into the Final Four with a 10 point win over Bethune-Cookman. The other Saturday game has Howard pulling off yet another upset and beating Canisius, 72-59 to advance to the Final Four. With just 2 spots left, we head to Sunday…. Idaho continues their run as a double digit seed by knocking off Northern Arizona, 65-56. In the final game of this round, Seton Hall continues to play great defense and beats Duquesne, 63-54 to advance.

Final Four
Before we get to the Big Games, for those who care about the 65th best team in the country, Jacksonville defeated Rhode Island for the NIT title. The Final Four brackets worked out perfectly in this inaugural season. We have two #1 seeds and two double digit seeds, and the #1’s are on opposite sides of the bracket, so if they can survive, they will face each other for the title. #1 Prairie View vs. #13 Howard #1 Seton Hall vs. #11 Idaho In the first game, Idaho pounded it inside to their PF, Buck Newman, who finished with 17 points and 9 boards. Seton Hall countered with jump shots, as both SF Frankie Booher and SG Joseph Copeland scored 10 points each. Idaho came back with a tandem of Small forwards in McKinley Strobel and Herbert Cerda, who combined for 38 minutes at the SF spot and 23 points. They were the difference in the game as Idaho pulls off the 65-60 upset! The second game was a complete laugher as Prairie View’s defense completely shut down Howard to the tune of 37 points. View’s offense was solid as well, with 3 players in double figures and they barely broke a sweat in a 79-37 victory. So that brings us to the final game of the season: #1 Prairie View A&M vs. #11 Idaho This should be a foregone conclusion, right? Wrong. Once again, Idaho just kept feeding the ball to Senior PF Buck Newman and he delivered time after time, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Prairie View’s potent offense could not find their groove today. Their Center, Doug Seeley was their leading scorer with just 10 points and Idaho is crown the first ever champions, 54-46!!!

Jeeb - Watson went to Colorado. In fact, look for a special note about Watson in the next post.

To me this is the best part of this dynasty…..
First we will take a look a the High School All-Star Game as it relates to our 5 star recruits. Wade DeLoach, ranked #2 overall and committed to Creighton was a backup on the West team and scored 5 points in 15 minutes. Berry Chaplin, ranked #3 and committed to Florida State started for the East team and scored 14 points, a team high. Tony Watson was the third recruit to be in the game. He committed to Colorado and started for the West team. He went off for 30 points and 6 rebounds and was named the Game’s MVP! Season Awards:
A couple of notes here: Player of the Year Manuel Cain averaged 15 points and 5 assists for Fordham this year. He is a 5th year Senior and his career is over. Drake’s Emundo Butler scored 10 points and had 5 assists for Drake as a red shirt Freshman to earn Freshman of the Year honors. It is a shame we will not be able to see him blossom, as he already declared for the draft. All the players on the National First and Second teams are Seniors and are leaving. On the third team, Jose Sherer from Drake is a junior as is Nicky Carmichael from Prairie View. They both will be returning. Besides Butler, the other 4 first team freshman will all be returning next season. Recruiting Class Rankings have been released, and here are your top 10, with the key player listed:
Cal Poly hauled in the #25 and #26 ranked recruits to earn the top spot. Besides Berry Chaplin, FSU got the #48th ranked recruit. If you recall, all teams in this dynasty began with a prestige of 10 on a 0-100 scale. No team has dropped below 10, but some teams have improved their prestige. Here are the top 4: Idaho 27 Prairie View 24 Howard 22 Seton Hall 22 Also, all conferences started out at prestige 2, on a 1-5 scale. It appears the conferences have shaken out early as we have many 5 ranked and 1 ranked conferences and all in between as well: Prestige of 5 (with familiar teams for reference): Atlantic Sun (Jacksonville: NIT winners) Big West (Idaho, NCAA Champs, Cal Poly, #1 Recruiting Class) Mid Continent (Oakland, Top 10 Recruiting Class, #3 ranked Southern Utah, #6 ranked UMKC) Missouri Valley (#7 ranked Northern Iowa, Crieghton, #2 Ranked Recruit) Patriot League (#11 Lehigh, Holy Cross, Colgate!) Sun Belt (#9 Arkansas State, #13 South Alabama) West Coast Conference (#4 Loyola Marymount) Prairie View plays in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and they have a prestige of 4. Some Notables: Big 12, Big East, Ivy are all ranked prestige of 3. A number of conferences dropped to a prestige of 1: America East Big South Colonial CUSA Horizon Northeast Ohio Valley Pac 10 Some interesting Coaching Changes of note: Arkansas-Pine Bluff hired away FSU’s head coach. This is notable since FSU landed one of the top ranked recruits this last year. Idaho’s assistant coach, Lyndon Moritz was given a head job at IPFW. Prairie View’s Assistant Orville Valdes was given a head job at New Hampshire. Charles Hash, another Idaho assistant got a head job at Stephen F. Austin.

1931-1932 Season
The NCAA listed 13 players as 5 star talent in this year’s recruiting pool. Only 3 of them declared for the draft. The highest ranked recruit to go to the draft was #3. That leaves a lot of high impact recruits out there. Four of them signed in the early signing period: PF Elden Holland, from Dayton, ID was ranked #6 and committed to Pacific. SG Israel Kee, from Phoenix, AZ was ranked #8 and committed to Cal Poly. C Douglas Odell, from Baton Rouge, LA, was ranked #9 and committed to UMKC. SG Chad Hayes, from Woodland Park, CO was ranked #11 and committed to Arkansas State. The other guys have not committed yet, but here is their ranking and the top couple of schools on their list: #1 SF Charles Schumann: Denver, Illinois State, Chicago State #2 C Arthur Wisdom: Denver, Southern Utah #4 PG Jonathan Howlett: Georgia State #5 PG Olin Tweed: Florida International, Holy Cross, Idaho #7 SG Richard Mena: Portland, Gonzaga #10 SF Ray White: Stetson, Western Illinois, Lehigh Pre Season Polls are also released:

Mid Season Review
First to recruiting, and man did Denver ever clean up this year! All but 1 of the 5 star recruits have committed to a school. Here are the latest ones: #1 SF Charles Schumann committed to Denver. #2 C Arthur Wisdom committed to Denver. #4 Jonathan Howlett committed to Georgia State. #5 PG Olin Tweed committed to Florida International. #10 SF Ray White committed to Stetson. #7 SG Richard Mena is the lone hold out right now. San Francisco and Loyola Marymount are on top of his list right now. Cal Poly and Pepperdine also appear to be on his list. Midway through the season, here is the Top 25 Poll:
Notes: Right now, freshman stud Tony Watson of Colorado is the 7th leading scorer in the NCAA with 20.3 ppg. Oakland’s Lyle Willette is right behind him in 8th place with 20.1 ppg.

Tournament Time!
First up is the final Top 25 poll of the season:
Some Key Stat Leaders: Points per game:
Keesee and Watson are true freshman, while the other three are Juniors. Rebounds per game:
All 5 are seniors. Assists per game:
All Juniors or Seniors, except for #1 on the list. Colwell is a freshman, and mostly overlooked in the recruiting process. He was ranked #548. My cutting and pasting project is ugly and is painstaking. Since this is more of a long term project I am going to just list the top 4 seeds from each region and then get right into the tournament: West: 1 Canisius 2 Northern Arizona 3 Evansville 4 Arkansas Midwest: 1 Central Michigan 2 Northern Iowa 3 Nicholls State 4 Stony Brook South: 1 LaSalle 2 SE Missouri State 3 Hampton 4 Drake East: 1 Rhode Island 2 South Carolina State 3 Alcorn State 4 southeastern Lousiana Notables: #5 Idaho #6 Cal Poly #16 Colorado #9 Denver #7 Seton Hall #6 Prairie View #16 Oakland #12 Howard

Round 1 Highlights:
The tournament starts off with a band as #1 Canisius goes down in one of the very first games played. 16th seeded DePaul knocks them off, 48-35! The other 3 #1 seeds survive. Three of the #2 seeds also survive, but Northern Iowa falls victim to 15th seeded Tulsa, 71-53. Two #3 seeds are upset. 14th seeded Illinois knocks off Nicholls State and Virginia knocks off Hampton. Also, two #4 seeds go down. Sam Houston beats Stony Brook and Wisconsin beats Drake. Last year’s final 2 teams, Idaho and Prairie View survive into round 2. Round 2 highlights: After 2 rounds of play, we are down to just two #1 seeds. In this round, top seeded LaSalle falls victim to #9 seed Washington, 80-71. Central Michigan and Rhode Island advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Looking at the 2 seeds, Northern Arizona, SE Missouri State and South Carolina State all advance, but in the Midwest, the 2 seed was already gone, and Seton Hall slips into the Sweet 16 as a 7 seed. Only one 3 seed is left and that is Evansville in the West Region. Boston University knocked off Alcorn State to advance. Notables: #6 Prairie View advances #5 Idaho loses to #4 Arkansas #6 Cal Poly loses to #3 Evansville

Sweet Sixteen Highlights:
Another round of play and another #1 seed falls off the map. This time it is Rhode Island in the East. They were upset by #4 SE Louisiana, 61-52. That leaves just Central Michigan as the lone #1 seed. In the West #2 Northern Arizona beat #3 Evansville, and they will face #8 Loyola Chicago. Central Michigan will face Prairie View in the Elite 8, which promises to be a great matchup. In the South, #2 SE Missouri State will face #9 Washington and in the East, #4 SE Louisiana will play 11th seeded Boston University. Elite Eight highlights: The West is up first and the seeding holds in this game as Northern Arizona takes a 10 point win over Loyola Chicago to advance to the Final Four. Later in the day, in the South, #9 Washington advances by upsetting the #2 seed, SE Missouri State, 57-53. In the first game on Sunday we see another big upset as #11 BU knocks off #4 SE Louisiana, 67-63. In the final game, the one we have been waiting for, it turns out to be a cluncker as #1 Central Michigan easily disposes of Prairie View, 70-57, denying them a repeat trip to the final four!

Final Four
Quick note: Pennsylvania beats Coppin State for the meaningless NIT title. Here are the two matchups: #2 Northern Arizona vs. #9 Washington #1 Central Michigan vs. #11 Boston University In the first game, Northern Arizona completely dominates the game. Nobody on Washington was even able to score in double figures. For N. Arizona, freshman Nelson Johnson went off for a game high 22 points and was named MVP of the game. Arizona took this one with ease, 73-49. In the second game, Central Michigan went to Freshman PF Burt Greenleaf and he delivered to the tune of 29 points. BU was up to the challenge though and Freshman SF Brandon Bess almost matched Greenleaf, scoring 26 of his own. The difference in this game was the 2 big men for BU. They combined for 23 points, which was almost the margin of victory for this year’s Cinderella team! BU wins this one 74-57. So, going into the finals on Monday night, we have two teams who dominated, but one is highly ranked and the other is an 11 seed…… The Finals This year’s championship game was everything it should have been. After 40 minutes nothing was decided and we headed to overtime! Neither team scored much in OT, but Northern Arizona gave BU no second chances on offense. Their two big men gathered 23 combined rebounds for the game and they squeaked out a 59-57 victory over BU. Northern Arizona are your 1931-1932 National Champions! Awards
Player of the Year Ronald Gonzalez is only a junior and will return for his Senior Season. It is no surprise that Tony Watson was named Freshman of the Year for Colorado. He was also the only one of our highly recruited players to be named to the All-Freshman team. Thomas Perez was named Coach of the Year at LaSalle after taking them to a #1 seed. Last year, he was 18-15 with the team and lost in the first round of the NIT.

Off Season Happenings
First up is the High School All-Star Game. Elden Holland, committed to Pacific, started for the West and scored 6 points in 6 minutes. He also had 4 fouls. Chad Hayes, committed to Arkansas State, scored 5 points in 10 minutes for the West. Charles Schumann, committed to Denver, also started for the West and scored 8 points, had 4 boards and 4 assists. He was named the game MVP. Arthur Wisdom, committed to Denver, started for the West, scored 18 points and grabbed 11 boards. Jon Howlett, committed to Georgia State, started for the West and scored 10 points and had 7 assists. Not a surprise, the West won 78-68. The Recruiting Rankings are out!
In addition to the #1 and #2 ranked recruits, Denver also landed 2 other top 1000 recruits. Florida International had the #5, #68, #116 and #307 ranked recruits. The top prestige teams in the NCAA: Idaho 42 Prairie View 39 Northern Arizona 36 South Carolina State 35 Canisius 34 Drake 34 Georgia State 34 Loyola Marymount 34 Rhode Island 34 We also had some teams drop below 10. The bottom of the barrel, all ranked 8: Central Connecticut East Carolina Houston Louisville Our prestige of 5 conferences with notable teams: America East (BU, final four; #13 Stony Brook, #24 Maine) Atlantic 10 (#1 Rhode Island, #3 LaSalle) Horizon (Loyola-Chicago) Ivy (??) Mid-Eastern Athletic (#18 Hampton, #22 South Carolina State) Missouri Valley (Evansville, #8 Northern Iowa, #10 Indiana State, #25 Drake, Creighton) Sun Belt (Denver, #19 Arkansas State) Prestige of 4 conferences: Big Sky (#5 Northern Arizona, Champs) Northeast (??) Big 10 at 2. Notable Coaching Movement: Canisius dumped their coach after a poor showing in the NCAA and hired St Louis’ head coach to replace him. Mark Lieberman led Washington to the Final Four last year and then bolted to take the head job at Colgate. His assistant, Lewis Giglio left for the top job at Colorado. LaSalle’s assistant, Isaac Ford left for the head job at Eastern Kentucky. Just a year after winning a title in Idaho, John Carroll leaves for a big contract to take the head job at Eastern Washington! Idaho replaced him with David Woody who has two, 20 win seasons with Davidson. Northern Arizona’s assistant coach used their NCAA run to land the top job at Indiana. Canisius’ head coach found a job with Jackson State as their new head man. Richard Hann, another Northern Arizona assistant got a head job. This time with Jacksonville. Cal Poly’s head coach took his recruiting prowess to Lamar for a fat paycheck. Denver’s assistant left for the top job at Liberty. Washington’s assistant, Will Barr got a head job at Nebraska after a Final Four run. Another Denver assistant landed a head job, this time with Northwestern. A BU assistant, Tom Walker got the top job at Oral Roberts. Another assistant got the top job at San Diego. Seton Hall had their top guy get hired away, but replaced him with the former Illinois coach. Xavier hired Seton Hall’s old coach. In the future I am going to limit this to just head coaches leaving. Way too long this way, and probably not too interesting when assistants leave….

First, a look at the Final Top 25 Poll: Code:
The top 2 teams are Final Four teams from last year. Here are some of the stat leaders in key categories: Point per game: Code:
In 4th place is Lyle Willette. He is a sophomore and was one of the highly recruited players in the first season of NCAA play. The rest of the guys on the list are seniors. Tony Watson was down to 17.4 ppg for Colorado this year. Rebounds per game: Code:
Bruno is a true freshman, but fell through the cracks in recruiting. He was rated only #184. Assists per game: Code:
The brackets have just been released, so lets take a look at the Top 4 seeds and Notables in each Region. West: 1 Northern Arizona 2 Southern Utah 3 Central Florida 4 Stanford MidWest 1 Washington 2 Duquesne 3 Cincinnati 4 Oakland 8 Gonzaga 13 Idaho 11 Drake South 1 Georgia State 2 Albany 3 Pittsburgh 4 Florida International East 1 Howard 2 Maryland 3 LaSalle 4 Seton Hall 9 Canisius 5 Colgate Recruiting Update: C Alfredo Underwood finally committed to a school. Arkansas State lands him which means they get two of the top 9 players in High School this year. Denver landed the top 2 players last year, but it did not earn them a tournament spot. They finished 18-14, but only 7-8 in conference play.

First Round Highlights:
For the first time in the short history of the tournament, all four #1 seeds advance to the second round. Of course, to balance that out, only one #2 seed advanced, and that was Maryland in the East Region. Hofstra defeated Albany, Loyola-Chicago defeated Duquesne, and Arkansas State defeated Southern Utah. Only 1 three seed was beaten and that was Central Florida in the West. Rutgers took them out, 80-72. Only one 4 seed lost as well, and that was Stanford in the West Region. San Francisco beat them 66-62. Round Two Highlights: The second round was not nearly as kind to the #1 seeds as the first round was. We lost half of our #1 teams today. The 9 seed Villanova knocked off #1 Northern Arizona in the West Region, 53-45. In the South Region, 8 seed Grambling knocked off #1 Georgia State, 72-69. Maryland was our only 2 seed left and they advanced into the Sweet Sixteen. We lost another 3 seed in this round. Pittsburgh and LaSalle made it through OK, but Cincinnati was knocked off by Wisconsin, 62-49. The 4 seeds, Oakland, Florida International and Seton Hall all made it through to the Sweet Sixteen as well.

Sweet Sixteen Highlights:
After beating the defending champion Northern Arizona squad, Villanova kept the momentum up and made it into the Elite Eight. They will face the 6th seeded Akron team in the West Region. In the Midwest, #1 Washington continues to dominate and they advance to face 10th seeded Toledo, who beat #6 Washington. In the South, 8th seeded Grambling continued its run by knocking off #4 Florida International. Pittsburgh is the 3 seed and they will face Grambling in the next round. In the East, all four top seeds remained heading into this round. #1 Howard took care of #4 Seton Hall. They will face # 3 LaSalle who edged out Maryland. Elite Eight Highlights: Villanova, as a 9 seed, could not complete its Cinderella run to the Final Four. They met their match in the 6th seeded Akron team. The final score here was 77-59. Toledo gave Washington all they could handle, but the Huskies finally pulled this one out and advance with a 66-60 win. In the South, Grambling took care of Pittsburgh and the 8 seed is headed to the Final Four. In the East, our other #1 seed, Howard, was upended by #3 LaSalle, 73-68. So that means Washington is the only 1 seed to advance to the Final Four.

Final Four
First, Florida Atlantic beat Kentucky for the NIT title. The matchups: #6 Akron vs. #8 Grambling #1 Washington vs. #3 LaSalle We have two different matchups here. The first game are a couple lower seeds who pulled off some upsets to get here. One of them will get a shot at the title. The other game is against two very good squads who planned on being here when the brackets were released. Washington and LaSalle are playing with a ton of confidence, and most people think this is the real title game. On the first game of the Saturday session, Akron relied on SG Charles Ewell, and he responded with 20 points to lead the team. Grambling had their own SG, Arthur Talavera, and he outdid Ewell by scoring 25 points. The game really come down to the benches. While Akron used a short bench and got very little from them, Grambling went deep and got contributions from 12 different players in the scoring department. This depth was too much for Akron, and Grambling dominated the game, 81-62. In the second game, LaSalle spread the ball around, with 4 different players scoring in double figures. Washington had the same game plan and they also had 4 players in double figures. The difference here was the monster named Ronald Gonzalez who played the Center spot for Washington. He scored 22 points and led the Washington team to the Title game with a 68-59 victory! In the title game, Grambling got 14 points from Talavera, but their SF, David Ellison scored a team high 20, along with 12 boards. Grambling also made great use of their bench again, getting points from 10 players. Washington pounded the ball inside to Gonzalez again, and he answered with 14 points. PF Sam Jeffreys scored 10. Washington also went to their bench a lot, and got scoring from 9 different players. While Grambling got 4-7 points per player off the bench, Washington only managed 1-2 points per player and that ended up being the difference as Grambling pulls off yet another upset and takes the title with a 68-50 victory!

Off Season (my favorite part)
The recruiting rankings have been released, and Arkansas State might have done a better job than Denver did last year! Code:
Arkansas landed recruits ranked: 3, 7, 12, and 18. Amazing. Besides Krit, Howard landed 2 other top 100 recruits. High School All-Star Game The West won for the third straight year, 72-64. Here is the box score, with our top recruits (*) Code:
Top Prestige teams in the country: Northern Arizona 49 Howard 48 Drake 47 Idaho 47 Florida International 46 Grambling 46 LaSalle 46 Rated 5 conferences with notable teams: America East ((#17 Albany, Maine, Stony Brook) Big East (#7 Seton Hall) Big Sky (#1 Northern Arizona) Ivy (?) Mid-Continent (#3 Southern Utah, #11 Oakland, #23 UMKC) Mid-Eastern Athletic (#9 Howard) PAC 10 (#2 Washington, #16 Stanford) Coaching Movement: The biggest news here is that Grambling head coach John Smith, fresh off a NCAA Championship has left Grambling for the top job with Belmont. Money was certainly a huge factor in the move. OK, it was the only factor. Canisius replaced their head coach with Trent Roberts, former coach of Air Force. Idaho replaced their head coach with former Wisconsin head man, Andrew McBride. Two years removed from a title and they have a new head coach again. LaSalle hired a new head coach, Steven Gray, former top man at Long Beach. Prairie View is headed in a new direction with a new head coach, Jan Johnson, from Liberty.

1933-1934 Season
The early signing period is over in the recruiting part of the season. This year we have 8 top ranted recruits. The last two of the 8 have declared for the NBA draft right out of high school, which leaves only 6 prized recruits. Half of those 6 half already declared a school. #3 C Bill Gleeson, from Port Augusta, Australia, has committed to Syracuse. #5 SF Basil Bowlin, from Browerville, NM, has committed to Idaho State. #6 C Stephen Stollings, from Teec Nos Pos, AZ, has committed to Northern Arizona. The following three players are still undecided: #1 SF Kelly Palm, from Durham, NC: North Carolina A&T, Norfolk State, Harvard, #2 PF Jackie Rude, from Morrisville, NY: Stony Brook, Boston University, Binghampton, Maine, Seton Hall #4 SF Alex Sims, from Spring Hill, FL: Florida A&M, Norfolk State The Preseason Polls have also been released: Code:
The two best recruiting classes in the last two years sit atop the polls. Can these young guns live up to the hype?

Two more recruits have given their commitments. #2 PF Jackie Rudd committed to Stony Brook. #4 SF Alex Sims committed to Norfolk State. #1 SF Kelly Palm is still undecided, but is leaning towards Norfolk State, Harvard, Binghampton or UNC A&T. Mid Season Polls Code:
Lots of familiar names at the top of the polls, but Denver, at 11-8 is ranked #4? Talk about West coast bias.

First back to the recruiting front where #1 recruit Kelly Palm still has not committed to a school. He has a very high interest in Penn, BU, Valpo and Yale, but he still has not committed. The Final Ranking are out: Code:

First Round Highlights:
The first round of the tourney wiped out half of our number 1 seeds! Northern Arizona and Lafayette survived, but Valpo in the Midwest was knocked out by Wofford, 66-64. In the south, Southern Methodist knocked off Kansas State, 84-76. The 2 seeds did not fare any better. Duquesne and LaSalle survived, but Arizona upset #2 Loyola Marymount and Mississippi Valley State took down #2 Campbell. Only one of the 3 seeds were knocked out, and that was Akron. Southern Miss. Took care of them, 67-57. St. Mary’s was the only 4 seed to get dumped. Western Illinois took them out 61-59. Second Round Highlights: And just that quickly, we are left with only 1 top seed in this tournament. In a ahuge upset, Northern Arizona was downed by 8 seed Cal State Northridge. Lafayette is our only top seed remaining. Elsewhere in the West, #5 Depaul, #15 Miss Vall State and #6 St. Jospeh’s advanced. This bracket is clearly wide open. In the Midwest, it is even more of a mess. While #3 Iowa State advanced to the Round of 16, we also have #16 Wofford making a run as well as #12 Santa Clara and #15 Arizona! The South Region is a little more stable. #9 Murray State is still alive, but the rest of the seeds are higher: #4 Bethune-Cookman, #2 LaSalle and #3 Georgia State. In the East we have our #1 team, Lafayette along with #4 Pepperdine, #7 and defending champs Grambling and #3 Norfolk State.

Sweet Sixteen Highlights
In the West, we had two upsets. Cal State Northridge took out #5 DePaul and the 8 seed will face the 15 seed, Miss Valley State! Wofford’s run as a 16 seed comes to an end, but we still have #12 Santa Clara and #15 Arizona advancing. The South is still the most reasonable bracket with #4 Bethune-Cookman and #3 Georgia State lined up to play. The East Region will see one heck of a battle as the top seeded Lafayette team will face defending champion Grambling, the 7 seed! Elite Eight Starting out in the West, one of the longest shots in the tournament, #15 Miss Valley State has its dream come to an end as Cal State Northridge takes care of business. However, in the Midwest, another 15 seed doesn’t let the dream die as #15 Arizona beats Santa Clara for a Final Four spot! In the South the seeds hold in this game as #3 Georgia State beats Bethune-Cookman, the 4 seed. In the big game here in the East, Grambling is not ready to give up its title and they whip the top ranked Lafayette team, 67-50 and advance to the final four where they will try to go back to back!

Final Four
As always, I must report the meaningless NIT results: Wichita State beats Air Force. OK. The matchups: #8 Cal State Northridge vs. #3 Georgia State #15 Arizona vs. #7 Grambling My money is on the higher seeds and Grambling to win it all, but I would not be shocked to see Arizona run the table! In the first game, Georgia State went to their Big Three all day. C Gilbert Boyd scored 16, PF James Capagna had 10 and PG Jonathan Howlett, once a #4 ranked, scored 20. Cal State Northridge countered with a Grambling like attack and made sure everybody got on the floor. They weared down Georgia State by having 11 players score, all at least 3 points and most of them in the 6-8 range. This depth just wore down the opponent and the 8 seeds pulls the upset. Cal State 74, Georgia State 66. Grambling and Arizona played a tight game from tip off to the final buzzer. Arizona could never find a go to guy in the clutch though, while Grambling had the experience of Arthur Talavera (remember him from last season?). Arthur put up 23 points and proved unstoppable in the final minutes to give Grambling the 72-68 victory! So the final game sees Grambling try to defend their title as a 7 seed and the 8 seed Cal State Northridge try to earn their first title. This game was close from start to finish as well, in fact, it was tied after regulation. Cal State went at Grambling, giving them a dose of their own poison, running guys in and out of the game all day long, keeping the legs fresh. Again they had 11 players contribute in the scoring column, led by Mario Howell at SF. Surprisingly, Grambling decided to shorten their bench and feed the ball to their studs for the whole game. Talavera had another big game, dumping in 21 points and pulling in 11 boards. The key to the game might have been the Grambling Center, Devin Warrington. He grabbed every defensive board in OT limiting Cal State’s chances. He finished with 14 and Grambling finished with a 79-77 OT win and back to back National Titles!!!! NCAA History Code:

Off Season Stuff
First, the High School All-Star Game The East finally wins one, 69-65. Kelly Palm was named MVP and I still have no idea where he is going to end up playing. He was the #1 overall recruit who could not make a decision. Code:
The Recruiting Class Rankings have been released: Code:
Morgan State earned the top ranking by signing the following: #11, 37, 14, and 272. Northern Arizona reloads by signing #6, 49, 13, 859, 1236 Stony Brook had #42 as well as #2 overall. The Big East had 2 teams in the top 10! New Team Prestige Rankings have been released and the very top of the list is no surprise: Northern Arizona 60 Grambling 59 Howard 57 Georgia State 55 LaSalle 54 Bethune-Cookman 53 Florida International 53 Top Conferences: Atlantic 10 (#3 LaSalle, #4 St. Joseph’s, Rhode Island, #17 Duquesne) Atlantic Sun (#7 Georgia State, #2 Campbell, #13 Central Florida, #10 Florida Atlantic) Ivy (#18 Dartmouth) Mid-Continent (#5 Valpo, UMKC) Mid-Eastern Atlantic (#11 Howard, #21 South Carolina State, Bethune-Cookman, Hampton) Southwestern Athletic (Grambling, Mississippi Valley State, Prairie View) West Coast Conference (Pepperdine, #24 Loyola Marymount, #14 Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga) Key Head Coach Movement: Arizona’s coach was hired away after a great final four run, so Arizona had to replace him. They got Hartford’s old coach, Albert Jordan. Duquesne’s head coach retired, so they went out and got Kendall Teets, former coach of Florida Atlantic. Kansas State earned a 1 seed, and then their coach left for a better paycheck. K State hired a Dartmouth Assistant, Adrian Simpson. Lafayette had the same thing happen to them so they went out and got Wilburn Barros, head man at Indiana. Northern Arizona was frustrated with the recent early NCAA exits, so they fired their coach and hired Lafayette’s man, Kelley Tromey. Prairie View’s coach Jan Johnson retired, so they hired Oregon State’s charles Martin.

It is not as bad as it sounds. First, I would highly recommend installing a second working version of the game on your harddrive, under a seperate directory. Then edit the default file, then create a new game. This way, the created players in the first year will all suck. If you create the game first, then edit the teams, the good teams will still have great players even though their prestige has been reduced.
Also, if you develope a nice mouse click/keyboard rythem (basically, delete, delete, 1, 0, click on next) it only takes about 15-20 minutes to do, max.

1934-1935
Training camps have ended and the early recruit signing period is over. Lets take a look at who is who and where they are headed. We have 13 players rated as 5 star recruits. Only 2 of them have declared for the NBA draft so there is a ton of talent out there. Six players have committed early to teams. Here they are: #4 SG Thomas Lopez, from Windsor, NC, has committed to Campbell. #5 C Stephen Edwards, from North Highlands, CA, has committed to San Francisco. #6 SF Alonso Norman, from Hamilton, GA, has committed to Prairie View. #7 SF Emory Brandt, from Lake Luzerne, NY, has committed to Brown. #8 SF Thomas Black, from Hartford, CT, has committed to Bethune-Cookman. #12 SG Andrew Felder, from West Caldwell, NJ, has committed to Princeton. There are 5 players who have not decided upon a school yet, but do have some favorites: #1 SF Lionel Johnson, from El Dorado, AR, favors Grambling, and Jackson State right now. #3 PF Stephen Velasco, from Bel Air, MD, favors George Washington, Coppin State, and St. Joseph’s. #9 PF Isidro Patton, from Colorado City, TX, favors Howard, Grambling, and Florida A&M. #10 SF Lindsey Davis, from Oneida, NY, favors IUPUI and Cornell. #13 PG Fred Hynes, from Syracuse, NY, favors Howard, LaSalle, Cornell and Harvard. The preseason polls have been released as well: Code:
The two time defending champions, Grambling are nowhere to be seen?

Mid Season Report
We had more recruits sign on with teams: #1 SF Lionel Jackson has committed to Jackson State. #9 PF Isidro Patton has committed to Grambling. #10 SF Lindsey Davis has committed to IUPUI. That leaves just 2 top recruits up for grabs: #3 PF Stephen Velasco: GW, Coppin State, St. Joseph’s, LaSalle, Delaware State. #13 PG Fred Hynes: Howard, LaSalle, Fordham, Dartmouth, Brown. Mid Season Polls: Code:
Grambling stands at 10-6 on the year, with a 2-3 conference record in the Southwest Athletic Conference. They better step it up if they want to get back in the dance to defend their crown. Last year’s #4 recruit, SF Alex Sims is the second leading scorer among all freshman for Norfolk State.

First a look at the final polls of the year: Code:
Here are some top performers in 3 main categories: Points per game: Code:
Baur is a Senior and was rated #122 overall back in our first recruiting class. Woolery is a Junior and was ranked #267 in the 1931 recruiting class. Rebounds per game: Code:
Paulson is a senior and was ranked #74 in the 1930 recruiting pool. Warrington is a Junior and was ranked #69 in the 1931 pool. Assists per game Code:
Burchette is a Junior and was ranked #32 in 1931. Wachter is a Senior and was ranked #84 in 1930. Early departees: Code:
Elden Holand was ranked #6 overall in 1931. Elden started for 3 years and averaged 15 points and 6 boards per game. Arthur Wisdom was ranked as the #2 recruit in 1931. Arthur started for 3 years and averaged 15 points and 8 boards per game. Jonathan Howlett was ranked #4 overall in 1931. Jon started for 3 years and averaged 12 points and 5 assists per game. Alfredo Underwood was ranked #3 in 1932. Alfredo started for 2 years and averaged just 3.5 points and 6.4 boards per game. He is clearly not ready, but bought into the hype the scouts were feeding him. Tournament Brackets, top 4 seeds and notables: West 1 Idaho State 2 Santa Clara 3 Wichita State 4 Grambling 10 Northern Arizona Midwest 1 Denver 2 Creighton 3 St. Louis 4 Delaware State 5 Texas 8 Fordham 12 Southwest Missouri State 15 Oklahoma 7 San Francisco 11 Drake Wow, this is a loaded region! South 1 Arkansas State 2 Jacksonville 3 Cal Poly 4 Albany 5 Norfolk State 7 Cornell 10 Illinois State East 1 Georgia State 2 DePaul 3 St. Joseph’s 4 Florida Int’l 8 Bethune-Cookman 9 LaSalle 12 Illinois 7 Howard 14 Holy Cross The East is another strong Region. That 8-9 game is going to be a great one I think.

Round One Highlights:
All four #1 seeds advance into the Second Round. The East Region saw the only #2 seed to lose. Towson upset DePaul, 90-62. Moving to the three seeds, only one of them failed to advance. Eastern Michigan beat St. Louis, 55-50. Two #4 seeds got dumped in the first round, including the two time defending champs, Grambling. New Mexico State knocked them off. In the East Region, Long Island knocked off the other #4 seed, Florida Int’l. Bethune-Cookman beat LaSalle in that 8/9 game in the East, 66-56. Round Two Highlights: Only half of our #1 seeds this year have advanced into the Sweet 16. Idaho State and Georgia State are through, but Villanova beat Arkansas State in the South Region and Denver fell to Fordham in the Midwest. We lost another #2 seed in this round. #7 Cornell took care of Jacksonville, 82-56. Our 3 remaining #3 seeds all advanced into the Sweet Sixteen: St. Joe’s, Cal Poly, and Wichita State. Our #4 seeds did not fair well this year. All of them are gone as we head to the Round of 16!

Sweet Sixteen Highlights:
Starting out in the West, #1 Idaho State is one game from the Final Four as they beat #5 Southern Utah. #2 Santa Clara will match up with Idaho State after they beat #3 Wichita State. So this bracket holds up in the Elite Eight with the 1 and 2 seeds. In the Midwest, #5 Texas advances with a win over #8 Fordham. #2 Creighton will face Texas after beating #14 Eastern Michigan. In the South, #5 Norfolk State beat Villanova to advance. They will face #2 Cal Poly in the Round of Eight. The 2 seeds are faring very well right now. Cal Poly knocked off #7 Cornell. Finally, in the East, #1 Georgia State survives a scare from #13 Long Island and #7 Howard gets through by beating #3 St. Joe’s, 70-53. Elite Eight Highlights: In the West, #2 Santa Clara withstood a brilliant performance from #5 recruit, Basil Bowen of Idaho State. The JUCO transfer scored 30 points. Santa Clara absorbed shot after shot from Bowen, but eventually came out on top on a last second shot. They take the win, 69-68 and advance to the Final Four! The brackets hold up in the South as #2 Cal Poly had an easy time with #5 Norfolk State to advance. In the Midwest, it appears Texas is peaking at the right time. The #5 seeded Longhorns just destroyed the 2 seed, Creighton, 83-58. In the East, we have our lone #1 seed, Georgia State. Howard gave them a run, but Georgia State was able to survive, 81-73 to advance!
