Post Wyoming Wildfire, aka GroupThink

I figure since this is a dynasty, the official workings should end up here for prosperity sake.

The concept of GroupThink is that many people contribute to form a fictional organization, sort of a quasi-Village Challenge.

The current "oganization" subject to change throughout the years based on performance and other "x-factors" such as fan acceptance, owner's wishes ans so-on. All forum members are able, and encouraged, to participate in the main forum discussions.

Owner: QuikSand
General Manager: TheRoyalOne
Director of Scouting & Player Personnel(Veterans): RPI-Fan
Director of Scouting & Player Personnel(Young): Daimyo
Offensive Coordinator: FishFan
Defensive Coordinator: Subby

Other forum members have taken on various assistant roles but these are the "primary" ones that are most likely to get canned if something goes wrong.

The challenge will be played using various House Rules, most of which are pretty common, but the highlights are as follows:
1. Begin with 2017 expansion draft.

2. May only except computer initiated trades that pass the "reality check"

3. Franchise Tag may be used but the player must be signed by the 10th week of the Free Agent period or be cut.

4. Only 3 renegotiated contracts per season, one offensive player, one defensive player, one either. The players must be in the final year of their contract. Additionally, these contracts must be renegotiated in the first 10 weeks of the FA Signing Period where the demands are the most reasonable for the team and the player.

5. May sign one Free Agent, excluding your own, in the first 10 weeks of the Free Agent Signing period, 3 in the final 10 weeks.(exception in intial year allows that you may sign unlimited free agents in final 10 weeks.)

6. When signing second year players through free agency, we will sign them for no longer than three year contracts, for whatever they will accept

7. We will be able to sign undrafted rookie free agents to one of two types of deal:

1) one year, bonus-free deals

2) four year deals with the following structure:

Y1: rookie demanded amount
Y2: 2x Y1
Y3: 3x Y1
Y4: 4x Y1
Bonus: $200,000

(we'll adjust the $200,000 over time to stay roughly the same)

8. Ticket prices will be modeled after regional foe, Denver.

9. As a stipulation to make the financial side harder, suite revenue will only count as half to our bottom line per our "franchise agreement" with the NFL. Details can be found here

10. Must maintain a 53 man roster we didn't discuss this but it is common to both the WLC and the House Arrest, any problems?

Rules are sure to be added and modified, but this is how we are starting.

The flow of the challenge will be in sections where the GM runs the file, then distributes, we discuss, then runs that section. Here is a brief synopsis of what those sections are likely to be:

1. Pre-Free Agency: 1st season Expansion Draft, Franchise Tag, Coaches/Scouts, Ticket Prices.

2. Free Agency-1st Ten Stages: Sign Franchise Player, Renegotiate Contracts, Sing 1 Free Agent, Discuss any offered Trades, Resign our own players.

3. Free Agency-2nd Ten Stages: Sign 3 Free Agents(first year as many as we want), Resign our own players.

4. Draft-Rounds 1-3: Discuss who to select.

5. Draft-Rounds 4-7: Discuss who to select. this stage might be combined with stage 4

6. Post Draft/Pre-Camp: Any extra young Free Agents to acquire?, Camp settings, discuss trade offers.

7. Pre Season: Depth Charts, run preseason games, discuss trade offers.

8. 1st 8 regular Season Games: Run games, then discuss any changes

9. 2nd 8 regular Season Games: Run games, prepare for playoffs.

10. Playoffs: Run Games, enjoy victory

With that, I think it is time to begin detailing.

Looks good to me, TRO. Thanks for laying out all the basics in one place. (The 53-man roster is a good rule, I agree)

Our team is the Wyoming Wildfire of the NFC Central Division.

Our scout for the first season is 61 year old Ronald Shepard who comes to us with a career record of 137-141-1, 5 playoff appearances, 1 Bowl. He is signed for 5 years, $1,120,000. His only weakness is with receivers where he is poor.

Our coach is 55 year old Charles Daniels, a rookie Head Coach on a 1 year $4,960,000 contract. He is a great gameday coach with poor development skills, probably not a good coach to have right now, but he might win us a couple extra games.

Our little 63,300 seat Natural Grass Stadium located in downtown Cheyenne is rated good compared to other stadiums, with only 40 luxury boxes and no club seats, this is truly a stadium that fits the lifestyle of the great state of Wyoming. On top of it all, you can see a Wildfire game for half the price of a Bronco game from the same level seat.

Good to see we picked up LB Jiminez and Joseph. As you may recall from War room I was very hot on these two players. Coupled with a few other vets I think our front seven has a good chance of getting it together.

As President of WWF (Wyoming Wildfire Fans) I am pleased at what appears to be a this team's attempt to field a competive team. We the fans are excited that Julio Riddols, so left so callously unprotected by my former favorite team, will be joining the us this season. We are blessed indeed to have a Super Bowl caliber QB on our team. I look foward to seeing continued progress made by this team! Go WILDFIRE!

Why don't you split Season Synopsis rule 8 in two in order to be able to discuss trades until week 4 ?

We can't initiate trades Alf, so there really isn't a point to discuss them. I've never received a computer offer during that time.

I think during the season it might make sense to leave ourselves felxible. If we get to week 5, and two of our starting LBs are hurt, we may want to stop there and decide what to do. (sign a rookie? move a DE to LB? switch to 4-3?)

I think that will be in the GM's hands-- no formal rule modifications necessary. TRO can judge whether it just needs a post, or a new file distribution.

That sounds reasonable. If a key player goes down, it would be good to discuss with the appropriate thing to do when someone gets hurt or is performing horribly.

I think ez discovered that a FBs overall computer rating is strongly affected by his Run Blocking. Perhaps that is why or FB rates low.

Ellis Alumbaugh is signed in week 7 for 5 years, 56.9 million dollars. Offers in the 3 and 4 range that he was initially looking for weren't happening but when we bumped it to 5 and actually lowered the annual numbers it all came together.

He is a 5 year starter from the White Sturgeon who has never missed a game and a 3 time member of the all-pro squad. Welcome to the Wildfire!

The save file is updated and ready at the week 11 mark ready for the final 10 stages.

This year we are allowed to sign freely, instead of the maximum of three from here on out. Since we already have a good number of potential guys to go after, how does tomorrow evening sound for the next step?

shouldn't the bonus just be tied to the rookie minsal somehow?

Wow.. I can't believe two of the top four players I wanted made it to the second round!

Quote:
CB Aaron Wilkens
Another late addition. This guy will be a great starting, cover cornerback in a few years and great cover cornerbacks are certainly at a premium in this game.

LB Ryan Schwartz
Schwartz stock has been climbing greatly in the the days leading up to the draft. He's very raw and unpolished, but his upside his tremendous. This guy could be the best linebacker in the league in four years. I put him even with Covington, Fonseca, and Wilkens.

If we take either one and get one of the two great centers in the third round I would consider this a great draft even with the lack of quality at the top... Wilkens along with the FA CB we got would make a great secondary for several years and would bve dominant if we could pick up a safety in next year's draft.

That concludes our Amateur Draft. We now need to decide on some URFAs and any pre camp cuts to be made. We must carry a 53 man roster which won't be a problem this season.

Also I need Training Camp regimines from the Coordinators.

I am not including the file yet because I have discovered a small problem that needs resolution first, discussion will be had in the main forum then I will upload the file.

I have gone ahead and declined both offers, they were FWIW:
DE Shockley to Seattle for WR Decker & 2018 5th round pick
C Stevenson to Pittsburgh for TE Dasilva.

Here is the updated file

After the draft we decide that some of our expansion "talent" needs to go, here is a list of who we purged:

RB Jonathan Kinney
RB Alex Ward
WR/KR Clifton Palmer
TE Vince Mayes
TE Christian Mark
TE Marvin Rhodes

More might, and probably will go after camp, but these are the definate cuts that are too expensive for the purposes and we hope they find homes elsewhere.

We sign the following to 4 year deals:
QB Shannon Shea I gave him a $200,000 bonus by mistake instead of $300,000
QB Zach McCorvey
RB Christian Camacho
FB Jason Hilliard
WR Pat Soto
WR Quentin Harvey
C Rob Heinlein
C Matthew Hinsley
OT Morris Newsome
OT Bo Roberson
DE Cary Sutton
DT Randy Schindler
DT Jonathan Alford
LB Tommy Crawford
LB Amos Meeks
LB Terrell Sellers
CB Tim Perry
S B.J. Croteau

We send camp invitations(1 year deals) to:
RB Chester Blackburn
RB Jorge Wild
RB Bucky Pounds
RB Teddy de la Garza
WR Neil Carillo
WR/KR Shane Weber
TE Gary Freeman
TE Marvin Dehaven
DE Ed Collins
LB Teddy Donhoff
CB/KR Jackie Weingrad

Training camp
FishFan has directed his players to focus on run formations, but not to forget about single back or shotgun formations, so this year he is pretty diversified and the camp.

Subby has directed his players to concentrate on the 3-4 and learn the nickel.

After Training Camp, the scouts are still pretty impressed by Fonseca. No one really surprises the scouts either. Kick Returner Wiengard suffered a knee injury early in camp and doesn't show the same explosiveness hitting the wedge now though.

The "Fire Starters", our pep group, has informed me that we sold 46,400 of our 63,000 seats in season tickets. We should have some people watching us this year.

We also received a few calls for trades around the league:

The Steelers called to ask about Ellis Alumbaugh, but we pointed out that the trade would have busted their cap. They felt pretty silly for that one.

The Titans inquire about OT Alonzo Denman and we inform them of the same thing, you will go over your cap.

The Panthers offer a 4th for DE Kurt Shockley, not only is that a bad trade, it would put them over the cap as well. Maybe ez has some friends that need jobs?

The Pond Frogs are interested in Herb Stevenson, but he is untradable at this point, especially for a 3rd rounder and a scrub Tight End.

The file is updated. We now need to make cuts and determine Game Plans and Depth Charts.

Talking

only 46,400 season tickets?!? probably because we don't have a marketing director or logo.

we're way under my earlier bonus estimate, however, and after adjusting for not selling out the stadium, i estimate our losses this season at $25M...

We trim the following players to get to 53:

RB Danny Gerhardt
RB Teddy de la Garza
FB Alvin Norris
WR Pat Soto
WR Roger Reilly
C Matthew Hinsley
C Nolan McGregor
G Brant Finch
OT Terry Whitfield
OT Ed Chandler
DE Ed Collins Sutton has better potential and a longer contract, currently about even
DT Leonard Covington
DT Jonathan Alford his ratings went down more than I thought
LB Teddy Donhoff
LB Mickey McBride
CB Jackie Weingrad
CB Brock Cote

We spent 100.08 million of our 166.3 million dollar cap, roughly 60%, not too bad.

2017 Exhibition Schedule

63,000

Week Opponent Result Attend No-Shows
Week 1 OPEN
Week 2 WASHINGTON REDSKINS L, 17-26 48,800 1,700
Week 3 Philadelphia Eagles W, 20-17 71,500 9,600
Week 4 ARIZONA CARDINALS L, 24-34 49,300 5,200
Week 5 Los Angeles Stars W, 23-17 23,200 5,100

Our Scout has this to say about our roster:

Fairly concerned about starting running back
Fairly concerned about starting fullback
Fairly concerned about starting offensive left tackle
Very concerned about starting center
Very concerned about starting offensive right tackle
Very concerned about starting defensive nose tackle
Fairly concerned about starting weak-side outside linebacker
Extremely concerned about starting strong-side inside linebacker
Fairly concerned about starting strong-side outside linebacker
Extremely concerned about starting strong-side cornerback
Fairly concerned about starting free safety
Fairly concerned about starting strong safety

He seems to like our kicking game

What else can be said? We survived with only one injury, to LB Meeks that healed. Our fans got to see us lose 2 home games and win 2 road games. Not the formula to draw fans to the stadium for sure.

We open the regular season with division rival, the Minnesota Vikings. For those in the WLC, isn't this who the Pond Frogs should open with? They finished 10-6 last year and made the playoffs. They are led my outstanding sophomore Bo Riley who won OffPOY, OffRoy, 1st Team RB and NFL MVP in his rookie season. A great early test for our young defense.

Our first home game is in week 2 vs the Tampa Bay Bucaneers who finished 6-10 last year but won the 2015 Super Bowl. They could be dangerous.

Regular season.

No changes were made to the defensive game plan from the preseason. Skip Barger did move to starting Strong Safety.

Changes to the offense can be found here

WEEK 1
Our first game is in Minnesota against the Vikings who were 10-6 last season.

The Wildfires first possession ends with a quick 3 and out.

Minnesota strikes first with a 33 yard touchdown pass on their first possession.

After another 3 and out, the Vikings march down the field before missing a 41 yard field goal attempt.

On the next Wildfire possession, Riddols begins to show his championship leadership, the drive culminates in the first score in franchise history:

3-10-MIN10 (10:29) WYO 18 Riddols pass completed to 87 Fonseca for 10 yards and a touchdown!

Fitting that the first pick in the expansion draft hooks up with our first pick in the amateur draft for our first score.

We then turn a bad punt into a quick 3 to take the lead, the defense holds and then Riddols hooks up with Fonseca again, this time for 23 yards to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

The Vikings come out strong in the second half with a solid drive culminating in a 26 yard field goal.

Both teams trade punts until the middle of the 4th when Wyoming extends the lead to 20-10.

Minnesota scores a touchdown with three and a half minutes left and adds a 23 yard field goal with :23 left on the clock in regulation.

Neither team can muster any offense in the overtime, when this key play occurs:

4-08-WYO33 (02:07) WYO 7 Broxon punted 47 yards from the WYO33.
MIN 13 Kinney returned the ball 14 yards to the MIN34. Tackled by WYO 84 McGeorge.
Ball was fumbled and recovered by WYO 84 McGeorge for 0 yards to the MIN34.

The Wildfire run the clock down and win on a 27 yard field goal.

Wyoming 23
Minnesota 20 OT

Key Stats:
Camacho 30-83
Pounds 8-25
Riddols 18/26 191 2TD
Fonseca 6-68 2TD
Staubach 5-77 (receiving)

Injury report:
Jason Hillard, FB - Bruised Ribcage, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Randal Pedersen, G - Shoulder Tendonitis, full strength in 3-5 Weeks

Week 2
We host our first official home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who lost 23-3 againt the Packers in week 1. So far, we are 3-0 away from home and 0-2 at home.

Wyoming starts with the ball, but shortly into the opening drive, Riddols throws an interception that is returned deep into Wildfire territory which is converted for an easy 3.

The Wildfire come right back and eat the clock up before scoring a field goal of their own.

Early in the 2nd quarter, Riddols finds McGeorge for a 7 point lead.

The old veteran, Martin Gramatica nails a 49 yarder to pull the Bucs within 4.

Halfway into the 2nd quarter, Riddols pulls a muscle while handing off to Camacho, McCorvey comes in off the bench, two plays later, Camacho scampers 37 yards for the touchdown.

Just before half, this sequence of events happens:

2-08-TBY19 (00:10) TBY 9 Glocke sacked by WYO 24 Reynolds and WYO 93 Clark for a loss of 7 yards.
Sack allowed by TBY 67 Hazen.
Ball was fumbled and recovered by WYO 92 Burns for 0 yards to the TBY12.

Possession to WYOMING.

1-10-TBY12 (00:04) WYO 6 Griffin attempted a 29 yard field goal and succeeded.

Talk about taking the air out of the opposition, Wildfire 20, Bucs 6 at the half.

The 2nd half is scoreless and filled with punts until Camacho breaks off a 58 yard run behind a Stevenson block with 10 minutes left in the game. On the first play of the next Tampa drive, Reynolds picks off the pass and returns it 13 yards to the 29 yard line. Sadly, two plays later, McCorvey is picked off whcih leads to the Bucs finding the endzone.

McCorvey is hurt running a draw which brings Shea into the game as well, but from here on out it is academic.

Tampa Bay 13
Wyoming 30

Key Stats:
Camacho 25-160 2TD MVP
Riddols 10/16 102 1TD, 1INT
McGeorge 4-50 1TD
4 sacks as a team.

Injury report:
Randal Pedersen, G - Shoulder Tendonitis, full strength in 3-5 Weeks
Ricky Beebe, DE - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 0-2 Weeks

Week 3
We travel to Chicago to face the defending NFC Central and currently 1-1 Bears who are a passing team by far.

After a trade of punts, the Bears drive the field fairly effectively, using both the run and the pass, finishing with a 11 yard TD strike to open the scoring.

The Wildfire come back and get on the board with a long field goal.

Late in the 2nd quarter, Chicago gets back on the board with another touchdown pass, the Wildfire again manage to comeback with a field goal.

It is 14-6, Bears lead at the half.

Wyoming misses a field goal opportunity early in the half and the Bears capitalize with another touchdown pass. This isn't the kind of game an expansion team needs to get into.

It ends up getting very ugly, very fast.

Wyoming 6
Chicago 34

Key Stats:
Camacho 16-34
Riddols 11/20 89 1INT
McGeorge 5-49
Erdahl 12 Tackles

Injury report:
Riddick Fonseca, WR - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Randal Pedersen, G - Shoulder Tendonitis, full strength in 0-2 Weeks

Week 4
We host the NFC Central leading Lions who have outscored their opponents 81-43

Detroit gets the ball first but can't do anything with it, they are forced to punt from deep in their own territory. The Wildfire take over on the Lions 38 and three plays later Riddols finds Moss for a 34 yard touchdown pass.

The Lions answer with a field goal on the next possession, then force a Wyoming punt and begin another long drive. Jiminez steps in front of a crossing pattern at the Wyoming 7 and returns it 12 yards, a big save.

Detroit doesn't make the same mistake on their next possession and run it in to take a 10-7 lead in the 2nd quarter.

Wyoming executes the next drive to perfection as it ends again with a Riddols to Moss pass for a 9 yard touchdown.

Detroit begins yet another monster sized drive late in the 2nd quarter, but Alumbaugh finally makes his name heard as he picks off a Marsh pass for a 67 yard touchdown return and all of a sudden the Wildfire lead 21-10.

Hickman gets in on the act on the first pass by Marsh on the next drive and returns it to the 16. Riddols quickly follows with a 16 yard strike to H-Back Staubach.

Riddols throws an interception just before the half which the Lions convert for 3 points, but at the half, Wyoming 28 Detroit 13.

The Lions get a 53 yarder on their first 2nd half possession, 2 punts traded later, in the 4th quarter, the Lions add a 38 yarder. It is now Wyoming 28 Detroit 19.

With 3:16 left in the game, the Lions again settle for the field goal, cutting the lead to 28-22.

A three and out by the Wildfire and the Lions pounce back with a touchdown pass under two minutes to lead 29-28.

Riddols is intercepted on a 4th down play which leads to another Detroit field goal and on the very last Wyoming possession Riddols is again picked off to seal the deal.

A very, VERY tough loss to swallow.

Detroit 32
Wyoming 28

Key Stats:
Camacho 15-55
Riddols 15/30 202 3TD 3INT
Staubach 6-82 1TD (receiving)
Moss 2-43 2TD (receiving)
3 Team INTs

Injury report:
Riddick Fonseca, WR - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Randal Pedersen, G - Shoulder Tendonitis, full strength in 0-2 Weeks

No sacks allowed?!? Is that a typo? Damn. Overall, not a bad start. Looks like Riddols can perform, but his 3 INTs in week 4 hurt big time. Another performance like that and McCorvey may get an opportunity. One big game by Camacho keeps him as the starter.

Man, if the defense had come through in week 4, we could be 3-1.

Not a typo Fish, the OL unit didn't allow a single sack.

As for the game the defense "blew". The offense was pitiful in the second half and couldn't control the ball long enough to hold them off. The defense did hold the Lions to a ton of field goals.

sorry for the delay, as I stated on the main board, I didn't feel like doing much yesterday, but today is another day.

Following a strong 2-2 record in our first month of football in Wyoming, the following changes went into effect:

RB Camacho is getting some increased playing time for good performance.

We are adjusting our run percentages to go more behind Left Guard and around Left End.

LB Jiminez is moving to SOLB, while LB Erdahl is taking over at MLB.

Week 5
We travel to Green Bay to face the Packers who are 2-1 on the season.

We hold on the Packers first possession, then on the 2nd down of our first series, Stevenson allows the first sack on the year for our club. On 3rd down, Denman allows the 2nd sack of the year, we punt on 4th and 26.

Green Bay drives for a fairly easy touchdown on their next possession.

Weber gives us some nice field position after a nice 35 yard kickoff return, but on 3rd down Denman gives up another sack, the karma has been broken.

During the next Packer drive, Kurt Shockley jumped up to block a pass which hits him in the shoulder, he left in pain. Packer QB Jaynes must have a cannon. Three plays later and the Packers are in front 14-0 and we have about -20 yards of total offense.

After each team swap punts, Denman makes up for earlier mistakes by making a crushing block to free Pounds for a 75 yard touchdown to get the Wildfire back in business.

We each swap a couple more punts. In the middle of the 2nd quarter, Jiminez shows that it was a great move to put him on the outside by picking of a Jaynes pass and returning it to the Green Bay 26. Two plays later, Riddols is intercepted himself and the momentum goes away.

Both teams put up modest drives to eat the clock down until the half, but no further scoring and they go into halftime 14-7, Packers lead.

In the 3rd quarter, neither team can sustain a drive, though a few get started, they all end in punts. Late in the 3rd Alumbaugh steps in front of a Jaynes pass near midfield to give the Wildfire a boost, but Riddols throws three incompletions to end the quarter and give the ball back to the Pack.

More punts are traded before the Packers get their offense back in gear and drive to the Wyoming 5 yard line with about 6 minutes to play. 1st down sees 7th round pick Beebe hurry Jaynes into a bad throw. 2nd down sees Erdahl make a great tackle at the 1. A bad pass on 3rd down and the Wildfire are still in the game as they force a field goal.

Riddols is intercepted on the 2nd play of the ensuing series to put the Wildfire in a deep hole. The Packers put this one into the endzone to seal the game. Riddols does throw another INT trying to pull out the miracle but GB takes a couple knees instead of scoring again like they easily could have.

Wyoming 7
Green Bay 24

Key Stats:
Camacho 13-37
Pounds 4-73 TD(75 yards)
Riddols 9/23 86yards 3 INTs
Fonseca 3-31
Erdahl 8 Tackles
Clark 1.5 Sacks (5 as a team)
Denman 3 Sacks allowed

Injury report:
Kurt Shockley, DE - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 3-5 Weeks (Inactive, replace with Cary Sutton)

Week 6
We host the 3-2 Chicago Bears in a rematch of week 3 when we lost 34-6. This is a big game in front of our home crowd.

Erdahl and Clark team up on the first play of the game to get the crowd excited, sacking the QB for a 5 yard loss.

Both offenses are playing well, but the defenses are stepping up when they have to, the first quarter goes scoreless without any real big plays. Camacho is running well though.

Chicago QB Sponseller gets in rhythm and gets his team on the scoreboard first, 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter.

Chicago forces a 3 and out and continues to look strong driving for another touchdown, extending their lead to 14.

Riddols executes a nice drive to the Chicago 40 the next time Wyoming has the ball, but he is cursed by interceptions of late and the drive ends. Fans are starting to shout things at him, like you are a ninny and my horse can throw better than you-such wierd Wyomingers(?).

Chicago tries a Field goal to end the half but misses wide left. 14-0 at the half.

Wyoming starts the 2nd half with a 3 and out, but Alumbaugh shows some of the veteran leadership he was signed for by picking off Sponsellers first pass and returning it to the Chicago 34. All doesn't go as planned though, as Cris Moss fumbles the ball on the 18 after a 9 yard run, missing a big oppurtunity.

Sutton gets a sack on the ensuing drive forcing a fumble at midfield but the Bears recover. Sponseller bounces right back with 3 straight completions and a 21-0 lead.

Riddols finds his groove on the next possession however: Fonseca for 36, Case for 43, Harvey for 15, Foseca for 7 and the TD.

Niether team does much until the middle of the 4th when Stevensons 2nd sack allowed on the day ends up with a fumble and Chicago possession at our own 12.

That pretty much puts the game away.

Chicago 24
Wyoming 7

Key Stats:
Camacho 15-62
Riddols 19/37 312 1TD 1INT 2Fumbles
Fonseca 7-93 TD
Staubach 4-85
Case 4-68
Stevenson 3 Sacks Allowed (5 as a team)

Injury Report:
Kurt Shockley, DE - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks (Activated, but as a reserve)
Leland Banuelos, T - Turf Toe, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Riddick Fonseca, WR - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks (2nd different injury on season, injury prone?)

Week 7
Week 7 is a rematch of the week heartbreaking 32-28 loss at home against the Lions.

We are lucky enough to injure Lions starter Marsh on the 3rd play of the game, we'll see if it helps.

Griffin is able to put up the first points of the game, and give us our first lead in quite a while, 3-0.

Detroit QB Rayburn settles in quickly with a 48 yard touchdown, quickly disposing of our lead, it lasted a whole 1:21.

We stop the Lions on a big 4th and 1 at midfield, then turn that into a second Griffin field goal to end the 1st quarter, down 6-7.

Rayburn mounts a 9 minute scoring drive to answer right back. They are scoring 7s when we score 3s, that needs to change.

A quick summary of the rest of the 2nd half and first 14 minutes of the 3rd quarter is punt, punt, punt, punt...Not a whole lot of offense going on. Detroit breaks the drought with a field goal, maybe we can answer with a TD like they did in the 1st half.

Instead we answer with a 3 and out and they drive for another field goal. Riddols does answer with a few long passes to McGeorge and Harvey, but only manages another Griffin field goal.

With only 6 mintues to go, things look dim, but Wilkens reads the Lions backup and picks off a pass deep in Lion territory, the Wildfire is back in business.

3 and out, business ain't good. Riddols throws another late game INT, he seems to get pretty rattled trying to rally the troops late in games to seal the deal.

Detroit 20

Key Stats:
Camacho 18-29
Riddols 12/22 166 INT
McGeorge 6-105 (2 Drops)

Week 8
Our first non-division game. It is against a fairly close geographic rival, the Kansas City Chiefs, who are 3-3 on the year.

The game starts with a familiar Wyoming 3 and out. Lately we are the Wyoming Fizzling Embers instead of the Wildfire.

KC then does another semi-common feat of late, long time consuming drive, this time ending in a field goal.

The 52,500 screaming(?) Wyoming fans are getting agitated. The cheerleaders are taking it upon themselves to get the crowd excited. Right as the Chiefs kickoff, instead of the usual "aaaaa-whump" type of cheer, they do a "aaaaa-surprise!" type and flash the fans. The Chiefs apparently saw this and Weber scampers 85 yards for the Kickoff Return TD. Security escorts the cheerleaders off the field and try to calm the fans who are in shock, both by the off-field shenanigans and the on-field performance.

The first quarter then turns into a battle of field position, neither team really getting the upper hand.

The second quarter begins with the Chiefs regaining the lead as Lang throws an 8 yard TD after a nice drive.

Riddols does lead the Wildfire back for a change after a score and gets the score tied as he gets Griffin in range for a 48 yard field goal. Camacho does twist his ankle running off the field as he thought they were going for it.

KC then manages another long sustained drive to finish the half with another field goal. The halftime score is 13-10 KC in front. The defense is keeping us in it by preventing the touchdowns.

The Chiefs begin the 2nd half like Wyoming did the first, 3 and out. Then Wyoming surprises us all by driving for 8 minutes before Bucky Pounds runs around left end for the touchdown and the 4 point lead.

The next drive sees the Wildfire commit a stupid defensive holding penalty to give the Chiefs an extra life. Then Erdahl drives the QB to the turf. Obviously still rattled, Lang throws a pass straight to Alumbaugh for his 4th Interception on the year. This leads to a Griffin 40 yard field goal and a 7 point Wyoming lead.

KC finishes off the 3rd quarter and gets to their own 40 before Alumbaugh telegraphs another pass and returns it 20 yards. This leads to WR Harvey running a reverse for a 3 yard touchdown. Very strange play call FishFan.

KC QB Lang leads his team back for a field goal on their next possession, but it is 27-16 Wyoming with 6 minutes left. The fans that didn't leave after the cheerleader fiasco are getting pumped.

The Wildfire eat 3 minutes off the clock before punting. KC quickly marches down the field for a TD and 2pt conversion to pull to 27-24 with under 2 minutes to play.

Croteau recovers the onside kick but Wyoming can't get a first down. KC gets the ball at thier 14 with 49 seconds left and no timeouts. Lang hits on his first attempt for 36 yards. They are at midfield.

They get no farther, the defense holds and the Wildfire have achieved their first season goal, 3 wins!

Fonseca 7-93 TD

Good to see Fonseca had a good game! His numbers are decent for his first year considering he seems to be constantly playing through injuries. With a couple exceptions, WR's don't fully come of age until their third year anyway (although I'm not sure if this is true in FOF), so I think he'll turn out alright. Has he been starting each game? as primary or secondary receiver? (i'm still not convinced the game uses flanker and splitend as any thing more than promary and secondary).

Also good to see that Staubach is putting up monster numbers as a TE! If he is awarded all-pro honors, would it be as a TE or FB?

Staubach will be awarded as a FB, and I'm pretty sure he will, though he doesn't deserve it with his "fake numbers".

Fonseca is in the 2nd WR position, and for the most part I agree with you, that the game treats it as primary and secondary, not Flanker and Split End. With his injuries, I'm not sure it matters much.

About that end around inside the 5-yard line: you gotta keep the defenses honest.

Expect my changes tomorrow morning or afternoon.

I disagree, TRO (I think). If FB Staubach makes the honors list at season's end, he will be listed as a fullback, and not as a tight end. He may get there solely fue to his 70+ catches hauled in whiel strictly playing TE, but he will be listed as 1st team FB or 2nd team FB. Players always show up in their "natural" positions, regardless of how they were actually used.

Hey guys. I'm back and ready to take over from my defensive assistant coaches. I need a couple of hours to re-acquaint myself with the team - thanks for helping out while I was on medical leave...

Sure, send your scout on the road the week the Cheerleaders flash the stadium.

I insist that we will find no talent in the Alaska Indoor League. Can I come home now?

Defensive impressions/adjustments:

Here are the quickand dirty numbers:

Run Yardage allowed per game: 105.5 (3.5) (10th out of 18 NFC teams)
Pass Yardage allowed per game: 268.2 (6.7) (18th NFC)
Points Allowed: 191 (14th NFC)
Opponents Red Zone: 5.0 points per visit (12th NFC)
Opponents 3rd Down Success: .371 (16th)
Turnovers forced: 14 (6th NFC)
Sacks: 19 (10th NFC)

Its obvious that we aren't getting enough pressure on the damn QB. Our secondary is getting sliced and diced with impunity. We aren't blitzing enough to justify our nickel coverage. Our nickel back has great intercepting skills, but poor coverage skills. Here are some changes I would like to see implemmented for the next game:

Depth Chart:
No change for the time being.

Game Plan:
Run expectation in normal situations: please increase run expectation on 3rd and short to 65. In addition, increase run percentage against teams that run much more across the board by 15% on 1st and 10, 2nd and short, 2nd and long, and 3rd and short. Please decrease by 15% from the normal setup for teams that pass much more across the board.

Tendencies:
Please decrease Nickel Package to 63 and decrease Dime to 45. Please increase All Out Defense by 2 in both run and pass, and add another 5 to the appropriate category against teams that pass or run much more. Please increase Blitz to 70.

Blitz Percentage by Position:
Please inncrease the OLBs to 25 and decrease the ILBs to 15. Please decrease the secondary to 5s.

Pass coverage in normal situations:
MtoM: 35 Bump: 15 2-Deep: 30 3-Deep: 15 4-Deep: 5

Double Coverage:
Please set the top number to 70 and leave the bottom number at 55.

Hopefully we can get some more sacks from DE Clark if we let Alumbaugh concentrate on locking down his man.

Comments, suggestions, hate mail, fan mail?

TRO:

If you get this in time...

Decrease the run percentage on 2nd down across the board by 5%.

Decrease the run percentage on 3rd down across the board by 5%.

Decrease Screen Passes by 3% and increase medium passes by 3%.

That's all for now, so no personnel changes.

We go into the 3rd quarter of the season coming off a much needed bye week. Changes to the team can be found in the two preceding posts by the appropriate coordinators. Riddick Fonseca is being replaced on the active roster by Neil Carillo, at least for the first game.

Week 10
We travel to face the 4-5 Oakland Raiders. The scouting report is incomplete as to whether they are a run much more or a pass much more team, so we go with Subby's base defense in this one.

Wyoming gets the ball first. We convert on two straight 3rd downs before punting, but a good solid 7 minute opening drive.

We hold the Raiders to one first down before punting. We convert another 3rd down before punting. We hold them to a 3 and out. This is a defensive game, the Black and Silver and the Black and Red are getting Black and Blue.

Two punts into the 2nd quarter before the first big play occurs. The play is a interception at midfield, thrown by Riddols (he seems to be thinking about those advertising deals). The Raiders take the ball to the 6 yard line before settling for a field goal.

We punt after another 3 and out on the ensuing possession but Sellers swings the momentum to the Wildfire with an interception at midfield, regrettably it turns into another 3 and out.

We hold the Raiders to the same and take the ball at the 2 minute warning before the half. Riddols throws another "late" interception but no harm is done.

Oakland starts the second half with a nice 6 minute drive that results in a 34 yard field goal to put them up 6-0.

We come back and convert on 3 successive 3rd down attempts to get close enough for a 44 yard Griffin field goal. Both teams had the ball once and together eat 13 minutes of clock.

Early in the 4th quarter, after a nice defensive stop, Riddols hands off to Camacho who runs around left end before being plowed by the Oakland defensive end. Ball is fumbled and recovered at the Wyoming 19 yard line. The defense steps up and holds them to a field goal. 9-3 Oakland leads.

We drive to midfield before punting with 7 minutes to go. The defense holds the Raiders to a quick 3 and out.

We convert a 3rd down, then two straight 2nd downs to get to the Oakland 35 with 2 minutes to go. We fail on 2nd and 3, 3rd and 3 and 4th and 3, then fail to stop the Raiders. Ball Game.

Wyoming 3
Oakland 9

Key Stats:
Camacho 22-95
Pounds 8-31
Riddols 14/26 157 2INTs

Sellers 5 Tackles, 2 Assists, 1 INT

Riddick Fonseca, WR - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Tommy Crawford, LB - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks

Someone please fire the equipment manager.

Week 11
We host the 7-2 Green Bay Packers. We lost to them in Green Bay 24-7 earlier in the year. They don't do anything much more than average, but are slightly a running oriented team. They also like to blitz, they dessimated our line earlier in the year.

I'm not going to go into all the gory details, it wasn't pretty. I'll simply highlight the scoring summary I might start doing this more often, seems easier

2 Wyoming 3 and outs surrounded the first decent Green Bay possession, they they tore us up.
1Q: 04:41 GBY - Derek Ventura 1 run.
Wyoming 3 and out, Clark sack-forced fumble, Burns recovers, Wyoming 3 and out. GB marches for the TD.
2Q: 11:01 GBY - Britt Whiting 17 pass from Gabe Jaynes.
Wyoming 3 and out, GB long drive no points, Wyoming 3 and out, GB drives for the TD.
2Q: 01:50 GBY - Derek Ventura 14 run.
Two completions to Fonseca sets up a long Griffin FG.
2Q: 00:36 WYO - Quentin Griffin 42 field goal.
GB comes out of the half on fire.
3Q: 08:46 GBY - Britt Whiting 34 pass from Gabe Jaynes.
1st Riddols 2nd half pass is intercepted. We hold them after a long drive, then a long completion to Staubach sets up this score.
3Q: 01:01 WYO - Riddick Fonseca 12 pass from Julio Riddols.
Clark forces another fumble on the next drive, recovered by Jiminez. Wyoming 3 and out. We hold, then Wyoming 3 and intercepted. Quickly turning into the next GB TD.
4Q: 08:31 GBY - Brant Pease 36 pass from Gabe Jaynes.
Camacho fumbles turning into the final GB points.
4Q: 05:58 GBY - Dennis Guthrie 23 field goal.
Wyomings next possession is another 3 and out before GB finishes the game off.

Green Bay 38
Wyoming 10

Isaac McGeorge, WR - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Riddick Fonseca, WR - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Tommy Crawford, LB - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks

Week 12
After last weeks debacle, we face fellow cellar dwellar, the 3-7 Tampa Bay Bucs in Florida. We beat the 30-13 at home in week 2. They run much more than average.

1Q: 10:53 TBY - Ronnie Sledge 28 pass from Renaldo Glocke.
2Q: 10:45 WYO - Alex Hickman 26 interception return.
2Q: 05:29 TBY - Jake Malone 8 run.
2Q: 00:33 WYO - Christian Camacho 5 run.
3Q: 10:06 WYO - Quentin Griffin 49 field goal.
4Q: 12:41 TBY - Chester Arnett 86 run.
4Q: 07:15 TBY - Chester Arnett 11 run.
4Q: 05:02 WYO - Quentin Griffin 38 field goal.
4Q: 02:16 TBY - Martin Gramatica 46 field goal.

Tampa passed all over us in the first half. Perhaps the 15% increase on running teams is too much since we already expect them to run a lot as is.

We continue to have problems with 3 and outs and late game situations. We probably need to address this in our next training camp. We had the game in hand until the 4th quarter when things blew up in our face.

Erik Mares, DT - Deep Thigh Bruise, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Riddick Fonseca, WR - Concussion, full strength in 3-5 Weeks-back to the inactive list
Tommy Crawford, LB - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks

Week 13
The Minnesota Vikings come to town, at 5-6 they are looking to avenge their week 1 23-20 loss to us. The hometown crowd is looking for us to get out of the cellar. This team really likes to run the ball. We handled them well in the first game.

A really great game, just like the 1st of the season. The fans never left their seats.

We had some great momentum going into the half, at least until the 75 yard hail mary connected to tie the game. Minnesota carried their new found momentum into the 2nd half where they scored then recovered a muffed kick return and scored again.

Thankfully, we came back in this game and then held them off. A great team effort.

The GMs View
Obviously the team still has some growing to do, but gaining a season sweep over the Vikings is nice.
I personally think that double covering the 2nd best WR with the S and 2nd best CB would be better than wasting Alumbaughs talents in a double coverage situation like we switched in this session, but I'm not the Defensive mind behind the team.
I also think it might be time to think about a switch at RB or QB, if for no other reason but to see what happens, though Camacho does have a shot at 1000 yards on the season. We don't necessarily have to play them for 4 games, but maybe 1 or 2.

Changes due by tomorrow evening, FWIW Richmond runs much more than average.
Please let me know which is easiest to read and which you like more, perhaps let me know in a separate thread to keep this one a little cleaner until the season is over.

We prepare to finish off a nice inaugral season. Next year should see a nice new approach to the way records are kept, the things we learn by doing as they say...

Changes to the offense can be found here. The defense will stay mostly the same, but I am going to let Alumbaugh play more single coverage like he did in the first 8 games and double the other guy. Consider it the last "hands on" move I get to make as GM.

Week 14
The Battle of the Expansion Teams. 3-9 Richmond Pond Frogs come to Wyoming to face the 4-8 Wyoming Wildfire. Adrian Covington, the first overall pick, has rushed 236 times this season for 1143 yards. That is 4.8 yards per carry behind a dismal offensive line like ours. He has rushed for 9 touchdowns. He has the inside track of Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Beginning of 2018
The salary cap has risen $8,100,000 to $174,400,000.

The league's minimum salary has risen $30,000 to $560,000.

Please welcome the following players for induction
into the Hall of Fame this season:
Tony Parrish
Larry Allen
Sam Madison
Jevon Kearse

We lost $186,535,000(deducting half of suite revenue) last year. I don't remember the ez estimate, but it seems worse.

Our coach is up for a new contract. We need to decide what to do with him and who to franchise. I will then do that stage and pass the file to RPI-Fan for the FA period.

Many thanks for a job well done, TRO! You set the standard for a very helpful dynasty thread, giving (in my view) just enough detail. Very good work, and thanks!
