Exclamation A Defense for the Ages: 2024 Richmond Knights

I talk about winning with defense and running and am having some good success in the WLC with this formula. This is one box score I would like to share with the board. As a defensive minded player, this 2024 Super Bowl has special significance for me in the way it was won.

This is the finest defensive performance I have EVER seen. I am so proud of this team. The 2024 Richmond Knights are as close as I will ever get to putting my philosophies in action. Towards the middle of the third quarter it got to the point where I was swearing at positive yardage plays for Denver - that's how dominant our defense was. When you check the drive summary, notice that 11 of the Denver drives were three plays or less. Also, note zero red zone penetrations.

-----
Some preliminary statistics from the 2024 regular season:

DEN QB Oliveira 273-445-8 for 3293 Yards and 25 TDs, 95.2 Rating (1st in League)
DEN RB Crane 169-1001 (5.9 YPC) and 6 TDs (12th in League)
DEN WR James 135-1746 and 14 TDs, 15 Drops (1st in League

DEN Rushing Offense 2nd in League (136.0 YPG)
DEN Passing Offense 4th in League (248.2 YPG)
DEN Rushing Defense 24th in League (110.4 YPG)
DEN Passing Defense 22nd in League (215.3 YPG)

RIC Rushing Defense 2nd in League (90.1 YPG)
RIC Passing Defense 4th in League (181.3 YPG)

RIC Postseason Awards:
FB Levine 1st Team All-Pro
G Moschetti 2nd Team All-Pro
No defensive players made the All-Pro Teams.

DEN Postseason Awards:
QB Oliveira 1st Team All-Pro
TE Monty 1st Team All-Pro
WR James 1st Team All-Pro
P Willing 1st Team All-Pro
DT Cook 1st Team All-Pro

These are the three quarterbacks on my 2024 roster. QB Snyder everyone knows and loves (or hates depending on how injury prone he is on your WLC team). Snyder has been about as bad as Charlie Batch for me and this season was no exception. He goes down with two weeks left in the season with a Dislocated Knee (Out, 2-3 Months). The backup goes in and loses both games but everyone heals before the Divisional round and we beat the Philadelphia Eagles 28-14 with Kennedy at the helm. We face the Portland White Sturgeons for the title and Kennedy takes us three quarters of the way before getting knocked with a Sprained Neck (Doubtful, 3-5 Weeks). 4th Round Rookie pick Bivins takes over and finishes up a 38-21 win. We face the offensive juggernaut Denver Broncos in the super Bowl. Explosive offense against the best defense in the 21st Century. With a Dbt backup QB and a greenhorn rookie available to quarterback our offense, can we rely on outstanding defense and running to win the game for us?

I decide against starting Kennedy and throw our rookie to the fire. Bell Biv Devoe gets the start and is knocked out in the third quarter. Kennedy goes in and plays a series and then WTF Snyder goes in and plays the last 8 minutes or so. EH?!?!?!

Wow.

Can you give a quick snapshot of what's up with this defense? Early draft picks? Free agents? Exceptional players at certain positions? (DT, perhaps)

Just curious-- your very highly rated defense is great, and its ability to manhandle an outstanding offensive team is tremendous.

Anything you can share, without upsetting the WLC concept, would be greatly appreciated.

I am assuming you are using your base-nickel concept here - strong MLB, DT, lock down Corner, Intercepting FS, high blitz and pass defense percentages...

In the WLC I have been using the 3-4 almost exclusively and my defense has begun to round out nicely...the one year I used a 4-3 things were awful...

Morgado,

that was an amazing performance, I am glad that your wonderful stratigies are coming to fruition in this league. I was wondering if it would be approprite for me to post a game that used my fast break offense in a conference championship game? It think it is a good example of how I was able to adapt your offensive strategies into something I find more favorable.

Subby is right on the mark here - this is using all the classic defensive philosophies I go on and on about like a broken record. The difference is that:

1. In the WLC, I have actually been signing free agents per the 1-3 rule. I *never* used to sign free agents in 20 step, but the rule has directed my attention to it. I now realize the powerful effect that stealing veteran players from other teams has on a team's overall power level.

2. Because I have been swiping maybe 1 FA per season and then renegotiating in their final year to longer term contracts, the team has become an old unit of 5-9 year veterans mixed in with my 4-6 year draft picks. This has produced high cohesion numbers (In the 70s) and more importantly high expertise ratings in camp. I think after doing all my adjustments, I came out with 70s in my base packages and coverages.

3. For once, I went after a defensive mastermind. My coach has VG avoid injury and Excellent defensive playcalling. Mix a kick-butt defense with the right playcalling and you get Giants vs. Minnesota in the NFC Championship game every time.

4. The draft picks I have on defense are typically not high draft picks! If you look at my dynasty thread, you'll notice that i've made the playoffs every season since 2019 and made the Super Bowl three times (third is 2024). So most of my picks are in the 30-36 range of each round. I have only ever had one trade, so I draft every pick in every draft.

5. Even more important is this - do NOT throw away your middle round picks. I know everyone wants to think 1st round star, 2nd round starter, 3r round backup and after that all the talent is gone. This could not be further from the truth. I have numerous 4-6 round players either starting or playing significant time.

To give you an idea:

CB Sharper 3(34) 2024
S Elizondo 1(20) 2019
S Skeen 3(35) 2020

You don't see too many picks here because a lot of my picks went to offense. For example all my mid round RBs. FBs, and TEs. Lots of my offensive line picks from mid rounds turned out good. The thing to notice is how many 3rd and 4th round guys are here - both my starting DTs! Am I nuts? Look at Skeen - at the end of the 3rd round. He is better than half the safeties in the lague at this point. CB kimball is my shutdown corner... not bad for a former third rounder.

I can post some stuff later, but right now i'm pretty hungry. Anyone not on that list is likely a FA pickup in some year. I tend to make one big acquisition at either DE or LB each season.

It think it is a good example of how I was able to adapt your offensive strategies into something I find more favorable.

Sounds interesting! I would love to see what people have done with the base 75 Offense. For the WLC, i've been playing a Small 75 almost to the formula and have been working mostly on defense (I guess you guys could have seen that heh). Anyway, if you feel comfortable about it, i'm sure other people would be curious... I sure am.

Here is a sample of when my fast break offense is most effective. This the 2025 Championship game against Tampa Bay. How my offense differes from the base 75

50-50-55/65-default
50-55/65-50-default
55/65-50-50-default.
I set the 3te to 0 as well as the 5wr sets. I bump up four wr sets to 60. 2wr is at 99 and 1 and 3 wr are kept at default. Passing distances are 10-38-38-7-7. I use the short game to control the ball and have slightly higher long distance rating than the 75 to take advantage of the bump and run and short zones my passing game will get from the other coach. **Editing note: I Said something really really really really stupid previously in this spot*** Finally, I set all my formations to roughly the same values 16-20 for all of them. This means that I have to have a good FB (to run out of the shot gun) and a solid te (to take advantage of Linebacker coverage). Finally, this system needs only one very good reciever. If the others have a good yac rating then you turn a lot of high percentage passes into big gains.

Essentially, I look to score first and then force my opponent into passing to catch up. I use a lot of nickle back (65 or higher) and make sure that my reserve CB's have a high intercept rate (even if their cover skills are below 10). This allows me to focus on pass defensive skills over a good run defense narrowing how I select my players.

Here is an example of when it works perfectly, although my running yardage is usually higher. Notice Snyder's pass completion ratio.
