Richmond Richmen - 2017

Expansion Draft--Found a few players that will be able to make major contributions in the next few seasons. My first pick was DE Ronnie Jones. Drafted a few players who will take up two positions (good returners here). Almost $100 million left under the cap.

Free Agency--Needed a QB, so went after Vincent Snyder. A 4 year, $70.1 million deal was accepted week 5.

In the 2nd half of signings, we targeted C Everett Mahoney, WR Irving Gomez, and LB Courtney Hape. All signed--Mahoney-3/3.54, Gomez-2/11.5, Hape-3/4.82.

After the FA period was over, we signed a few players to one year deals.

Rookie Draft--Holding the #1 pick, we already had our franchise QB, so we were looking for defense. Stud DT Ian Chung was looking fantastic, with maxed out run/pass rush ratings. We drafted him, and hoped he wouldn't bust.

In the 2nd round, we were thinking of taking RB Rico Ackerman, but went for an excellent LB, Karl Mason with potential ratings of 50/93/98/78. Took a solid WR in Colin Daveria in the 3rd round. To our surprise, the RB I was considering in the 2nd round was there in the 4th. I quickly selected him. Took two guards in the 5th and 6th, and a very good LB in the 7th.

Filled the roster out to 70, and then headed to camp.

Training Camp-Thankfully, none of our rookies busted. In fact, most of their ratings grew. A big surprise was WR Marty Abernathy, a FA signing whose potential ratings grew to the point where he could be considered a future #2 receiver. After cutting the roster to 53, we got ready for the exhibition season.

We went 1-3 during the preseason, and the only significant injury was to LB Kerry O'Neil. A sprained neck would sideline him for 3-5 weeks.

Year in Review

A 6-10 season was more than we were expecting. We will hope to break .500 next year. In the offseason, we hope to improve the O-line and Secondary. Very happy with our LBs.

2018

Offseason

Started out by signing scout Allen Behrendt to 3 year, $1.33 million deal. The coach stays the same.

In the first week of Free Agency, I made a 4 year, $40.13 million offer to T Tito McReynolds that was accepted. We also signed T Jon Gabriel (2/9.15), DE Kendrick Baxter (3/19.35), and CB D.J. Sinclair (2/12.5). The plan at the end of the season was to beef up our O-line and improve the secondary. This should help us out.

Draft

Holding the 6th pick, we were hoping for G Cornelius Krueger to fall to us, as we were now solid at T, but very weak at G. He did fall, and we picked him up. In the 2nd round, stud S Melvin Giles was selected. His ratings were very symmetrical, and his potential was maxed out, so we were a little nervous. WR Oscar Randle was picked in the 3rd, and G Mark Kinney, who we were looking at in the 2nd, was available in the 4th. We found a sleeper in the 5th in C Dale Pitts (potentials of 89 and 70), and PR specialist Richard Jeffers was our 6th pick. Yet another G, Tyrone Douglas, was taken in the last round. Overall, we feel we accomplished our two main goals of the offseason: Improve both the O-line and secondary.

Exhibition Season

We go 2-2. No major injuries. (NOTE: I went through an undefeated preseason, but then the game crashed. D'oh!)

We hope to break .500 this season.

Regular Season

Yes, it was a tale of two seasons. An 0-6 start, followed by winning 9 of 10. But we broke .500, even though we didn't make the playoffs. The conclusion of this season gives us very high hopes for next year.

Season highlight: In week 7, the last loss before the streak, QB Vincent Snyder went 20 for 29 for 414 yards and 4 TDs. Colin Daveria had 5 catches for 184 yards and 2 TDs, while Irving Gomez had 6 catches for 170 yards and a TD. First time I've had two receivers with so many yards.

BTW, Pittsburgh beat Philly 27-6 in the Bowl.

We start off the Free Agency period by signing LB Matthew Friesz to a 3 year, $23.6 million deal. Later on CB Shawn McGee, 2 years, $13.72 mil, WR Vernon Filer, 3 years, $21.06 mil, and T Blake Hynes, 7 years, 13.06 mil, all signed deals.

Draft

Last season's success left us with the 23rd pick in the 1st round. We used it on big G Donnell Goff. DT Wendell Martin came aboard in the 2nd. Using the 3rd pick, we took powerful K Scottie Haglund. The 4th round brought QB Max Bennett, the 5th, TE Clifton Martinez, and the 6th, CB and KR specialist Sherman Brown. Our last pick was used on RB Ellis Brown. A solid draft class from a fairly weak drafting spot.

Preseason

We go 3-1, with no significant injuries.

Regular Season

Victory at last! We go 13-3 in the regular season, and breeze our way through the playoffs for the first Super Bowl victory in Richmen history. See the post in the GD for a screenshot.

Season highlights: Vincent Snyder had an unbelievable season. Details to follow. Sherman Brown had a 107 yard kickoff return for a TD, the longest one I've ever seen.

Offseason

We rewarded head coach Tim Bernstein with a new 3 year, $6.13 mil per deal. Now that our staff was set, we headed into free agency.

After we let DE Ronnie Jones go, we needed another DE to anchor the line along with All-Pro DT Chung. We went after former Viking DE Jon Aquadro, and signed him to a 2 year, $21.03 million deal. The available players were fairly weak, so we only signed LB J.C. Voss (3/16.69) and C Alvin Naughter (7/9.7).

Draft

We still wanted to improve the secondary. Last year's pick of S Melvin Giles turned out brilliant. With the last pick of the first round, we selected CB Dana Rivera, who had very high potential. In the 2nd round, we took another guy with high potential-S Patrick Kaplan. Teaming him with Giles should give us the best young tandem of safeties in the league. In the 3rd-another safety, in case of a possible bust by Kaplan-, we drafted Henry Whalen. The 4th round brought a very good RB, Korey Wallis. With our current RB Ackerman up for free agency, we will take a good look at Wallis to try and save some money. The 5th round selection was WR Marvin Gaines, who looked like a steal. The 6th pick was CB/KR Anthony William, and LB Quentin Plummer was taken 7th.

Training Camp

No busts! WR Gaines had a breakout camp, and looks like a future #2 WR.

It was a great season. Wallis stepped up and became our starter halfway through the season. We will now save some money by letting Ack walk. Snyder was amazing once again. The receivers had incredible Avg. Yards per Catch.
