FOFC Golf Tour - AT&T Pebble Beach National

AT&T PEBBLE BEACH NATIONAL - PEBBLE BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

Pebble Beach is an extremely challenging course, especially when the wind is blowing hard (which is pretty much always).

Here is a quick overview of the course:

#1 - 373 Yard - Par 4
An easy opening hole, but it requires a precise tee shot to a narrow fairway.

#2 - 502 Yard - Par 5
Best birdie opportunity on the course. This is a reachable par 5, but long hitters are typically at an advantage here.

#3 - 388 Yard - Par 4
Need to hit a controlled draw off the tee to be in a possition to attack the pin. Otherwise settle for par and more on.

#4 - 327 Yard - Par 4
Tight fairway, tiny green, swirling winds off the ocean...this one is interesting, but not easy.

#5 - 166 Yard - Par 3
Green is sheltered by trees, club selection is criticle here.

#6 - 516 Yard - Par 5
Hole plays uphill and typically into the wind. Much harder hole than it appears at first glance.

#7 - 107 Yard - Par 3
Due to wind...this hole can play as short as a lob wedge or as long as a mid-iron shot.

#8 - 431 Yard - Par 4
Beginings of what is arguably the 3 toughest, consecutive par 4 on tour. The second shot here is long and across a cliff to a tightly bunkered green.

#9 - 464 Yard - Par 4
Toughest hole on the course. Cliffs and ocean always a problem here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

#10 - 426 Yard - Par 4
Just get a par here and move on.

#11 - 373 Yard - Par 4
Course begins to move inland again. This uphill hole is a decent birdie chance.

#12 - 202 Yard - Par 3
Precision iron shot needed to keep the ball on the green and clear a huge fronting bunker

#13 - 392 Yard - Par 4
Catch your breath here, two toughies are coming up.

#14 - 565 Yard - Par 5
Arguably the toughest par 5 on the entire tour. Dogleg right, uphill, tricky green. If you get a five here, say "Thank you God," and quickly move to the next tee.

#15 - 397 Yard - Par 4
Out of bounds on both sides of the fairway make this hole dangerous.

#16 - 402 Yard - Par 4
2 bunkers on the right side of the fairway make the drive positioning important. Second shot must be hit through a chute of trees.

#17 - 209 Yard - Par 3
Tough par 3 to birdie.

#18 - 548 Yard - Par 5
Difficult to reach in two. Need to make a putt to get a birdie.

Brian "Butcher" Babson
- the boxer/golfer is long off the tee, which could be very helpful here, but he's also erratic, and isn't a great putter, which could be bad. However, Babson can scramble pretty well, and his boxing background makes him tough as nails.

Stan Gunner - Gunner has a nice tee to fairway game, but he's best skill is the approach shots. His putting is above average but not at the upper echelon on the tour. Gunner is also tough mentally, and a very resourceful player.

Alan Kelmay - Kelmay is one of the top putters on the tour, and his ball striking is great. He isn't particullary long, but he is straight. He is also very capable of scrambling around to save strokes.

First Group - Round 1 - Front 9 Results

Brian "Butcher" Babson - 34 ( - 2)
Babson started off quick going birdie: birdie. His length helped him here, in fact he easily reached the Par 5 - 2nd hole in 2, but he nearly 3 putted the green. On 4 Babson misses the fairway and has to settle for bogey, but his toughness shows through as he responds by birding the next two holes. On the 6th Babson's missed the fairway again, had to lay-up, then his approach missed the green, but he managed to chip in for birdie. Babson closes out the front nine with a bogey on the very tough 9th.

Stan Gunner - 33 ( - 3)
Gunner isn't able to reach the 2nd par 5 in two, but a great 3rd shot leaves him a 10 foot putt for birdie - which he drains. On 4 Gunner makes a 20+ foot putt for birdie, then follows that up with an 7 iron on 5 to within 8 feet. His hot play continued on 6 where he plays the hole textbook style and birdies. However, like Babson the tough 9th bites him for a bogey.

Alan Kelmay - 33 ( - 3)
Kelmay has the most unbelieveable start of anyone on the day. He birdies the first 4 holes - and nearly birdied number 5 (putt lipped out to prevent it). Although he played outstanding he didn't do anything spectacular. Solid off the tee, straight, great approaches and good putting. Unlike his playing partners Kelmay pars the 9th, but the 8th is a different story. On the 8th Kelmay hit the ball in the fronting bunker and didn't manage to get up and down.

Kyle Kappe III - Kappe is a player who can be erratic. Not particularly long off the tee, but rather straight. Good irons, but his short game could use some work. Putting is above average, but not outstaning. However, Kappe is smart, tough, and can scramble around to keep himself in contention.

Duncan Baxter - This focused Euro is hated by tour fans because he plays "Boring", but he's real good too. If he hits it well off the tee (a big if at times - because he isn't particularly long or straight) he can win any tourney. His iron play is very good, his short game is very good, and he is arguably the best putter on tour.

Jeff "Sweatspot" Nights - This physically fit player, hits fairways. He is probably the straightest driver on tour, and he isn't particularly short either. His straight drives can be quite intimidating to players who are irratic off the tee. But Nights putting and short game are average at best.

2nd Group - Round 1 - Front 9 Results

Kyle Kappe III - 34 ( - 2)
Kappe birdies two by hitting an approach to within 12 feet and making the putt. on 4 his hits a great drive down the middle and parleys that into birdie. On 5 Kappe sinks a 30 foot putt for birdie. But on the very next hole he misses the fairway and the ball is in the deep rough. He can't get the club to the ball and ends up hitting a bad 2nd shot, and eventually shoting a 6. On number 8 his second shot finds the fronting bunker and he doesn't get up and down.

Duncan Baxter - 33 ( - 3)
Baxter though not long, got a great tee shot on 2 and actually reached the green in two, then he made a 24 foot putt for Eagle. His lack of length didn't hurt him on 6 either, where he didn't reach the green in 2, but his approach was tight and the easy putt gave him birdie. No bogeys for Baxter on the front.

Jeff Nights - 39 (+3)
Things started out fine for Nights as he pars the first 4 holes, but his tee shot on the par 3 - 5th missed the green on the short side. The tough pitch wasn't executed well and he settled for bogey. The par 3 -7th was identical to the 5th - short sided himself and didn't execute the pitch. The 8th ended up being a bogey when Nights couldn't get up and down out of the sand.

Colton Mayes - A determined golfer with a very solid all around game. The only weakness is sand play, but he's still average here. He's capable of getting under the skin of opponents and is hated for that. Despite the fact there is not obvious weakness in his game, Mayes can be very streaky.

Kyle Smith - One of the worst players off the tee on tour, but his iron play may be the best and his putting is arguably the best as well. Those two factors keep him on the tour. If he has a good day driving the ball - look out he could really "GO LOW".

David Gonzalez - This hated golfer is Huge off the tee. In fact, he's so long it is quite often intimidating. The rest of his game is quite good too. He's capable of winning on any type of course.

Colton Mayes - 36 (EVEN)
Mayes tried to reach the par 5 second in two and came up just short. His chip was excellent however, and he was left with a tap in birdie. Missed the fairway on 4 and bogeyed. On the par 3 7th, his 9 iron landed with-in 3 feet for an easy birdie, but as was the case frequently on the day...the 9th hole prooved too tough and he gave back his stroke.

David Gonzalez - 37 (+1)
Gonzales moster drive on 2 gave his a 5 iron to the green, which he executed beautifully, but his agressive eagle putt missed and rolled 9 feet by. He did make the comebacker for birdie. He was in trouble on the 6th and 8th, but his resourcefulness saved him probably 2 strokes. However, he lost a ball on the 9th which led to a double bogey 6 and a +1 front 9.

Kyle Smith - 34 ( - 2)
Smith hit a poor drive off the tee, but the strength of his game stepped up on the next two shots. He hit an excellent iron from a tough possition in the fairway to within 25 feet, then drained the putt for his first birdie. The par 3 seventh was a piece of cake for Smith. The iron off the tee landed 14 feet from the hole and backed up to within 6 feet. Easy Birdie.

Jimmy Fuijita Not very accurate with any of his clubs he is a master around the greens and putts like a champion. His resourcefullness, course management, and tactical skills, combined with his short game saves more strokes than probably anyone else on tour, problem is - that means he has alot of strokes to save. Can be dangerous if he hits it straight though.

Kevin Boroniec Kevin has a solid all around game, his best strength is putting, but his only weakness is the sand. He's a cluch performer, who has the look of a champion. His focus on the course is intense and he's often hated by the media and fans because he appears to be cronically complaining.

Ron Juckett Here is a guy that is good at everything. Nothing in his game stands out, solid off the tee, pretty straight, good not great irons, probably average putter. Just a solid game top to bottom. He's less likely to "Go Low", but he's also less likely to explode, especially when you factor in his determination and heart.

Jimmy Fuijita - 36 (EVEN)
Jimmy started off with a bogey on the first hole when his tee ball found the deep rough. A long putt birdie on the 3rd put him back to even, and a great chip on the 6th allowed him to make a short putt birdie. However, the 9th hole proved to be too tough, when Fuijita lost his ball to the right. His resoucefullness allowed him to walk away with only a bogey.

Kevin Boroniec - 37 (+1)
Kevin started off with a birdie on number 1, but gave his stroke back on number 3 when he turned the ball over on the draw his was hitting and the ball ended up stymied behind some trees. On the 6th hole Boroniac's normally great putting let him down, when he 3 putted, missing a comebacker from 7 feet. He finished out with two very solid pars on 8 and 9.

Ron Juckett - 35 ( - 1)
The second hole par 5 was Eagled when Ron's 4 wood 2nd shot landed 15 feet away and the putt was made. He again capitalized on the par 5's by birdiing number 6. On hole 8, Juckett miss hit his drive leaving it well back and in the first cut. He elected to layup rather than temp the cliff. Then his 75 yard 3rd shot was average at best, ending up 20 feet away. 2 putts later Juckett had bogeyed.

T. E. Almighty - Another well balanced player, who is focused, resouceful, and clutch. You will probably see his name on weekends frequently.

Fad Braxton - Short and erratic off the tee, Braxton's irons and putting are outstanding. Similar in style and stature to Kyle Smith. If he's good off the tee, he's at the top of the leaderboard.

Sterling Silvers - Better than good everywhere but sand shots, but probably not quite great anywhere. But this streaky golfer, knows his way around a course, is a master of the scramble and doesn't often make mistakes...and when he does...he's resouceful enough to get out of them.

TE Almighty - 33 ( - 3)
A bad tee shot on #2 prevented Almighty from being able to go for the green in 2, but a great approach leaves him a birdie putt, which he makes. On 4 TE hits a huge drive, his approach is tight and the birdie putt is made. The 6th hole is a great birdie with 4 solid shots.

Fad Braxton - 38 (+2)
Faxton struggles on both par 5s due to his short length. He never has a thought of going for either in 2, and in fact, come up short on the 6th with his 3rd shot. The 9 iron into the 7th was close and the putt was made for birdie. Braxton finishes off the 9 with two strong pars

Sterling Silvers - 33 ( - 3)
Silvers starts of with 2 birdies. The first hole he makes a 25+ foot putt, the second hole was birdie from the moment the ball left the drivers face on the tee. On the 3rd hole, Silvers ball finds the trees, but his scrambling ability and resourcefulness allow him to save par. Then on the 4th he returns to form with an awesome approach and an easy tap in birdie. The rest of the 9 was uneventful....until....the 9th. On the 9th hole Silvers is in the rough off the tee and manages a bogey after short siding himself on the approach.

sorry for the delays...I had so much work dumpped on my desk on Friday, that I've been working on it at home

Group 6

AJ Tucker - Tuck is a great putter, who, if he can keep from putting a wedge in his hand - any wedge, sand, lob, pitching - will be in good shape. Solid all around game and the ability to get out of trouble.

Michael Weideman - Weideman is about average with his short game, but he doesn't have to use it often. Typically, he throws darts with this irons and rarely misses greens. When he is in trouble, the guy has a knack for finding a shot when there doesn't appear to be one available.

Rob Nielsen - One of the best short games on tour, but he needs it because he isn't very accurate with his approach shots. Putting and driving are above average, so for him - it's all about hitting greens. If he misses greens, he scrambles well for pars, but he takes away his chances at birdie.

AJ Tucker - 38 (+2)
A bad approach on number one cost Tucker a stroke, which he quickly got back on the second. On hole 4, Tucker missed the fairway and was straddled with a bad lie, he ended up with a bogey. His streakiness displayed itself on the next hole, when he caught the ball fat and bogeyed again. The 6 th hole Tucker was forced to make an almost 20 foot downhill putt to save par. On 7, another 20+ foot putt was made, but this time for birdie. But his success was short lived. On 8 the approach found the sand and a poor out, left Tucker with a long putt for par, which he missed.

Michael Weideman - 35 ( - 1)
Birdie, birdie to start the round. A great putt was made on 1 and a tough approach on two was executed perfectly allowing him to make a 14 footer for birdie. On the 4 th hole, Weideman's trademarked laser beam iron approaches failed, and he was unable to get up and down.

Rob Nielsen - 37 (+1)
Rob had the worst start of any tour players this year. Maybe he didn't warm up enough or maybe he was nervous, but he started with a bogey on the easy 1 st hole, and followed that up by losing a ball on the second hole and getting double. He also managed to bogey the par 5 6 th hole. However, he did have a birdie on 4, 7 and an awesome one on 8.

Rolin Bywater - Very solid as long as he stays out of the sand. If he's in sand, he's in trouble. In fact, he may never get up and down all season.

Marshall Herd - good player who is sure to make quite a few cuts. He plays with a lot of heart and if very popular because of that. His ability to come through in the clutch and find ways to make things happen also add to his popularity.

Bradley Nowell - A golfer with a lot of confidence. His game isn't intimidating, not overly long, not an awesome putter, not a wizard in the short game, but his confidence, stride and focus seem to intimidate others.

Rolin Bywater - 38 (+2)
Rolin boged both par 5s. On the other 7 holes on the front, the tee balls were very good, but it appeared he wanted to get those extra yards on the par 5s, and ended up being late with the hands and leaving the ball way right.

Marshall Herd - 34 ( -2)
Marshall birdied number 2 when he reached it in 2 and 2 putted. He also birdied number 6. He came up just short of reaching it in two, but managed a solid chip to within 11 feet, straight up hill. He birdied the tough 9 th after a huge drive, but bogeyed the 8 th.

Bradley Nowell - 38 (+2)
Brad started off great going bird bird, but that was it for the good news on the front. A bad chip on the 3 rd led to a bogey. He followed that up by bogeying 4, then settled down until he hit the tough stretch of par 3s, where the bogeyed both 8 and 9.

It's Craptacular - the player with the funny name's skills are mostly average with the exception of putting, which is phenominal. However, few players have more intangibles. He's great at course management, scrambles well, he's clutch, resourceful, and tough to beat when he has a lead.

Kevin Wayne - Wayne may have the best combination of skills for Driving length, accuracy, irons, sand and putting, but his sand play is horrible.

Shane Kormalink - Average skills, except....you guessed it putting. Great at scrambling which helps because he is't a particularly good pitcher or iron player. He's also resouceful which saves numerous strokes a round. The question will be if he gets enough opportunities at birdies.

Mike Tokunaga - The man that nearly missed his tee time, is long off the tee and straight enough to be dangerous in any tourney if he can hit a decent percent of fairways. He also has a nice if not spectacular short game. His putting is about average.

It's Craptacular – 36 (EVEN)
No Birdies no bogeys. In fact this round was about as textbook as you can get. He did
need a 17 foot putt on 9 to save par.

Kevin Wayne – 32 ( – 4)
What a start for Wayne. He birdies number 1 when he sinks a tough double breaking 12
footer. Then he crushes his drive on 2, and his second shot lands short of the green, but
rolls past the pen and stops 14 feet away. The Eagle putt is made, and Wayne is off and
running. The rest of the 9 is dull until number 9, where he sank a 20 foot putt for birdie.

Shane Kormalink – 33 ( – 3)
Shane had 4 birds on 3, 4, 6 and 7 and 1 bogey on 4. The bogey was caused by missing
the small green short side. The only spectacular shot on the birds was a long putt made on
number 7.

Mike Tokunga – 34 ( – 2)
Birdie, birdie, birdie – The holes were played perfectly. Long straight drives, great
approaches, all the putts were 18 feet or less. Hole 8 was the only blemish on the front.
The second shot buried in a bunker and Tokunga wasn't able to get up and down.

I'm going to do the back 9 differently. I'm just going to post everyones results at one time here.

AJ Tucker - 38:37 (+3)
Tucker bogies 10 when he hits a bad chip, but he birdies 11, makes a great putt at 12 to save par, but then bogeys 16.

Alan Kelmay - 33:34 (-5)
Alan continued his hot play on the back. He started off slow with a bogey at 10, but he birdies 11 to get his stroke right back. Then he bogeys 14 when he misses a 10 foot par putt. But he finishes almost as strong as he started...posting 3 consecutive birdies on 16 thru 18.

Bradley Nowell - 38:37 (+3)
Bogeys 10 then reals off 5 straight pars, before an awesome approach at 16 put him only 7 feet from the pen. The stroke he gained at 16 was given back on 18 however.

Brian Babson - 34:33 (-5)
Started the back nine like he finished the front with a bogey, but an awesome approach on 13 gave him his stroke back. Consecutive birdies on 15 and 16 were followed shortly after by another birdie on 18. The 4 birdies in 6 holes placed Babson in a tie for lead after the first round.

Colton Mayes – 36:37 (+1)
Mayes back 9 was pretty uneventful until the last three holes. On 16 his 9 iron approach landed only inches from the pen, but backed up to about 10 feet. Mayes made the putt for birdie. But his success was short lived. On 17 he 3 putted from 35 feet and on 18 he tried to reach it in two, put himself in trouble and could barely manage a 6.

David Gonzalez – 37:36 (+1)
Number 10 looked very promising when Gonzalez ripped his drive 320+ down the middle, but a horrible approach left him no shot at par. On 16, Gonzalez took a 6 footer a little to lightly, and lipped it out, giving him a bogey. On 18 his length came in very handy. He busted his drive 300+ again, didn’t reach the green in two, but easily got up and down for birdie.

Duncan Baxter - 33:35 (-4)
A 9 iron on 13 landed about 12 feet away from the pen and stuck there. Baxter made his putt and continued his hot play. 16 was the lone blemish on his entire round, his drive caught the bunkers on the right of fairway. His out was less than spectacular and he didn’t get up and down. He did however respond after his bogey by throwing a dart at the par 3 – 17 pen. Unfortunately for Baxter he received a bad hop and the all didn’t stop rolling until it was almost 20 feet from the cup. Despite the bad hop – Duncan still made the putt and the birdie.

Fad Braxton – 38:34 (EVEN)
Faxton played about as bad as anyone on the front, but he regained his composure and shot 2 under on the back, leaving him even for the tournament. Braxton birdied the 11, 13, 15 holes, but gave one back on the 16th. His putting on the backside was unbelievable. He made a long one on 10 to save par, long one on 11 for bird, a long one on 12 to save par, made tricky double breaker on 13 for birdie, made a 15+ footer on 15 for birdie. A bad chip on 16 left him 16 feet for par, but that was a putt he wasn’t able to convert.

It’s Craptacular - 36:35 (-1)
Again a textbook side. This time his only excitement came on 15 when a 20 foot putt was made for his lone birdie.

Jeff Nights – 39:35 (+2)
Nights terrible front side was not carried over to the back. He was inconsistent birdying 11 and 12, then giving back both strokes on 13 and 14. His birdie on 15 put him 1 under for the side.

Jimmy Fuijita – 36:37 (+1)
A bogey on 10 was the only thing that happened on the back.

Kevin Boroniec – 37:36 (+1)
A huge drive on 11 set up an easy approach and birdie, but 12 was bogeyed, the tee ball paid off again on 14 when a long straight drive set up another bird, but again Kevin gave the stroke back – this time on 18.

Kevin Wayne - 32:39 (-1)
Kevin’s hot front side wasn’t carried over on the back. It started off fine, but a bogey on the par 5 14 th, after his approach shot found the bunker an he was unable to get up and down, led to a “serious discussion” between Wayne and his caddie. On the par 4 16 th, Wayne’s stubbornness seemed to overpower his typically tactical approach to the course. After a poor drive left his blocked by the tight grouping of trees around the green, he attempted to thread the needle with his shot, rather than lay up and take what should have been an easy up and down par. His shot hit the tree, kicked straight down, and he eventually ended the hole with a double bogey 6.

Kyle Kappe III - 34:35 (-3)
Birdied 11, and a bad chip on 12 gave the stroke back. A great 3 rd shot from about 115 yards gave Kappe a birdie on 18 and a 1 under score for the back.

Kyle Smith - 34:35 (-3)
Birdied 11, bogeyed 15 when his approach spun off the green on the short side and he didn’t get up and down. Birdied 17 with a 22 foot putt.

Marshall Herd - 34:35 (-3)
Marshall began playing more textbook golf on the back, he didn’t try anything foolish and continually took his par and moved on. On the 17 th, the approach ended up 12 feet away and the putt was made for bird. A great up and down on 18 allowed him to stay 1 under for the back.

Michael Weideman - 35:34 (-3)
Bogeyed 10 when he hit a poor chip – leaving himself 17 feet for par. Two great approaches on 13 and 15 led to birds, and 18 was just a perfectly played hole, which also ended in birdie.

Mike Tonkunaga - 34:37 (-1)
Gave 1 of his strokes he earned on the front back on 14 when he 3 putted.

Rob Nielsen – 37:37 (+2)
Failed to get the ball out of the bunker on his first sand shot on 12, then didn’t get up and down – leading to a double bogey 5. Got one of the strokes back on 14 when he nearly reached the green in two, and got up and down.

Rolin Bywater – 38:40 (+6)
Bogeys at 10,12,13 no birdies.

Ron Juckett - 35:35 (-2)
Birdied 13 when he sunk a big breaking 16 foot putt.

Shane Kormalink - 33:37 (-2)
Birdied 13 and 14 by hitting good approaches and good putts. Bogeyed 12 when he hit the ball in the bunker and didn’t get up and down. And Doubled 17 when he caught the ball thin, it hit the green, skipped off and ended up in the water behind it.

Stan Gunner - 33:35 (-4)
Bogeyed 10 on a 3 putt, birdied 13 and 16 with solid play. On 18 a multi-breaking putt was made from 14 feet to save par.

Sterling Silvers - 33:35 (-4)
Bogeyed 10, but birdied the next 2 holes when he sunk a 16 footer on 11 and hit an iron off the tee at 12 to within 3 feet.

TE Almighty - 33:34 (-5)
Missed a golden opportunity at birdie on 10. His first two shots on the tough par 4 were great, but his putt from 7 feet never even touched the hole. Rebounded to birdie 11, then misread a putt again on 12 or he would have had another birdie. Finally got the second birdie for the side at 17 when he knocked the tee ball to within 15 feet and made the putt.

Yikes, 6 shots back of the leader. Hopefully, I can get my short game going to go along with the bombs I'm unleashing in the next round so that I can make the cut.

Woohoo! Who said boxers can't golf?

Hopefully that strong first round will help make the cut after Butcher bombs out in round 2.

Fad Braxton pulled it together a little bit on the back nine, after a little soul searching at the turn. He decided he's got to step it up a notch to compete in this tournament, and will go AGGRESSIVE in the 2nd round.

Marshall Herd will attempt to bore his opponents into a lull. He will play normal again for round 2.

thanks to all that have already stated their preference for playing style in round 2. If you've PM them to me...please post them here as well so others will know which FOFC name goes with which player.

I have already completed everyones base score for round 2, I will make the adjustments based on attributes and style of play when everyone gets them in.

Just a quick teaser. 3 golfers went low in round 2. That could change with the modifiers, but the scores could go lower as well...
