The biggest problem is we continue to leak cash - losing $40M last year. We're filling the stadium to 99.7% full but still losing money like crazy. Sounds like a ticket price hike is in order. Sorry fans.

A litle surprisingly, no retirements this season.

PRE-SEASON

We start the season with 39 players and under $11M in cap space. This will be tight.

Coach Weaver is up for a new contract. With a 73-48-0 record, he is the second winningest coach in the league. and he's only 44. We offer what he asks for to be retained, but he immediately jumps on a contract from Dallas ($10.6M per year - we offered $4M) and we'll be getting somebody new.

Our new coach is Reuben Nixon - a man with no peers at calling a game. He is reportedly runs a loose club house though, so we'll see how that works out. He comes on for $4.6M/3yrs.

Uffins is up for free agency so, being our only keeper, he gets franchised. We cannot really afford to pay two quarterbacks starter money, so I unload Culpepper on Seattle for the #12 pick in the draft, which also frees up an important $9M of cap space.

FREE AGENCY
Orr biggest need is at DE, where we have two players under contract, but one is Kyle Hancock who is still out long term with Repetitive Concussion Syndrome, but instead of retiring, he'll rot on our roster making $960,000. His ratings presently are 5/5/27.

I think we are looking pretty good around the board, except for needing two DEs and maybe an upgrade at WR.

The DEs that are available are all 13+ years - I'll wait out early free agency and see if we can find some bargains.

Longtime Jag DE Mike Strahan eventually got some offers around week 9, and we match for much more than I wanted to spend - $6.3M/season for 3 years. A lot for a 15 year veteran, so the contract was only $1M in total bonus money.

There ends up not being much else there.

THE DRAFT
There is an absolute force at LB by the name of Derrick Lewis at the top of this draft - he'll terrorize this league. We pick at 26, with a bonus first rounder at #12.

Lewis slides though the first couple of picks but I cannot trade up to get him before he goes at #6.

At #12 the choice is difficult. We need a DE, but the top two were already taken. This is a weak draft for WR. We end up taking the best player available.

Round 1, #12. Jonathan Hansen, LB, California
Potentials are 84/100/79/90/87, and his currents are good enough that he might compete for a starting job this season.

Round 1, #26. Dennis Malano, WR, Texas A&M
Another BPA pick. His current ability may be good enough to start for us immeditately and he when finishes this little maturing left, he should be very good.

Round 2, #26. Eugene Hitchcock, DE, W. Illinois
Hitchcock is certainly an interesting pick - he is a ferocious pass rusher but almost non-existent in the running game.

Round 3, #26. Teddy Fulton, S, Tulsa.
I don't know how this guy keeps falling - is he a bust and everybody in the league can see it but our scout? For a third round pick, we'll take the chance. A great pass defender with excellent (but not equal) return skills, Fulton could be a great addition.

Round 4, #26. Malcolm Salcedo, FB, S. Connecticut State
Looks to be a great blocker and short yardage back with moderate receiving skills./

Round 5, #26. Junior Lynn, QB, NC State
Could eventually be a moderate talent, though unlikely that he'll every be more than a backup. Potentials all pan-out in the 50-60 range.

Round 6, #26. Skip Huskey, G, Ashland
Looks to be a pretty good run blocker, but may give up a lot of sacks.

Round 7, #26. A.J. Alcott, G, Tulsa
Figures to be an average blocker in the running and passing games.

To free up some cap sapce, I unload WR Darnay Scott who in his 14th season is Demanding Trade. We only get a 7th rounder for him, but $4M for a #4 WR is a little much.

TRAINING CAMPS
Well, we go into training camps with $1.3M in cap space, 46 players under contract, and a legal roster. Time to evaluate the rookies.

LB Hansen came through with shining colors - he'll be our defensive anchor an in all likelihood, my keeper - for a long time.

S Teddy Fulton, the third round pickup looks like the real deal too.

QB Junior Quinn may actually be much better than we thought - maybe no starter quality, but not bad for a 5th rounder.

No busts, and several players actually improved from their draft projections! Yeah!

Looking around the league after camps, that monster LB that I was so interested in - Derrick Lewis - was a bust. Not a bust like most - he'll still be a solid player - but I think the LB we did get in Hansen was the best pickup in the draft.

I do make one pickup after camps, picking up DE Justin Prior to help out our yound, hurting DE corps. He's solid all around.

This team is going to be tricky to hold together next season - Conquergood is up for free agency. I'd like to wrap him up now, but he's looking for a $5M raise, and I just don't see where to get that money from.

RESULTS
We finish the preseason 2-2 and looking pretty solid overall. WR Jason Tucker is hurt as is #3 Tackle Brad Bopp. And of course, DE Kyle Hancock will likely miss the whole season.

JAX at CLEVELAND
Scottie got his first playing time as our regular starter and was solid: 22-30-1, 2 TDs, 318 yards. Conquergood got 107 yards the hard way, running the ball 28 times. We win 27-16.

GREEN BAY (0-1) at JAX (1-0)
This is the first time I've noticed that Jim got rid of the lines on the games. We line up opposite the Packers, led by the venerable Gus Frerotte. There's no nice way to put this - we humuliate them. Conquergood runs for 160 yards and 2 TDs. Uffins throws for 368 yards and 4 TDs, with no picks. Rookie WR Malano caught seven of those for 149 yards. Conquergood had another 4 receptions for 48 yards and two more TDs. Prior comes up with 1/5 sacks. They play our scrubs tough, but this one was over at half time: 52-24.

JAX (2-0) at CINCINATTI (1-1)
Well, Scottie was not on top of his game today, throwing three picks and only completing 16/31. One of the interceptions was returned for a TD. His average completion was for about 15 yards though. Conquergood was a workhorse again - 24 carries, 100 yards, 2 TDs. In the end, it was a defense led by LB Johnson's 10 tackles that won this game for us, 28-21.

JAX (3-0) at TENNESSEE (2-1)
A big road game against on of our primary division challengers. Mare kicks four field goals to offset an Uffins interception returned for a TD. When you look at this box score, there is no way we should have been in this game. They held us to 1.2 yards per rush. They won the turnover battle. We didn't get a sack. But we got great returns, great punts, and converted enough 3rd downs to keep us in it, and the Titan's 8 penalties were their undoing: 28-21, Jags.

At 4-0, we are far and away the highest scoring team in the league with 140 points. Pitt is next with 128, nobody else over 100.

JAX (4-0) at MINNESOTA (2-1)
A tough opponent, Minnesota has only given up 47 points so far. #1 is Buffalo, which has only given up 15 points in three games. This game was completely back and forth. Finally we were the beneficiaries of a pick returned for a TD, with Ronald Coleman doing the honors. Aside from that, we were lifeless in the first half, with the score 17-7 at the intermission. We tie it up in the 3rd quarter on a Conquergood run and a Mare FG. With 3:18 to play, we get another FG to go up 20-17. At their own 30, Minnesota goes for it on 4th-and-18 with 1:43 to play and second year DE DiMaggio comes up with the sack. Rookie FB Salcedo tries to run out the clock, but runs all the way to end zone to apparantly seal this one 27-17. Two passes later, Mnnesota is in our endzone with 0:30 to play and the score is 27-24. We recover the onside kick attempt though, and the game is over. Uffins and Conquergood were both disappointing but the defense, led by LBs Johnson (11 tckl, 2 asst) and Brock (7 tckl, 2 asst) and a pass rush that generate two ints, was able to win the game for us.

BALTIMORE (2-3) at JAX (5-0)
Another nailbiter. Mare kicked four FGs but we watched the Ravens take the lead with 2:33 to play, 16-12. Fulton gives us a nice return to the 40. Uffins strides out and takes the snap, pass incomplete, underthrown. 2nd-and-10, Uffins goes to Conquergood on the screen, 9 yards. 3rd-and-1, 2:01 to play. Uffins to Henson, 9 yards, 1st down at the Baltimore 43. 1:52 to play, two minute warning. Uffins drops back, looking long - he's going for it all - TOUCHDOWN! Henson catches it in the endzone and Jags lead 19-16!!! The defense comes out, forces four incomplete passes, and the game is over.

CHICAGO (3-2) at JAX (6-0)
Would the magic continue? Not if Scottie Uffins could help it. In his worst game of the season, Uffins completed 11-25 passes for a scant 132 yards, and had yet another interception returned for a TD. Once again, Conquergood and our defense are up to the challenge. Conquergood runs for 108 yards, 2 TDs. The defense comes up with 2 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 fumbles, and holds Chicago to 1.3 per carry. The Bears outgain us 298-265, but we outscore them 23-18, with the game won on a Conquergood TD with 1:32 to play.

JAX (7-0) at TAMPA BAY(4-2)
We visit to a division leader's house. The Bucs have a pretty solid defense and an average offense. The Bucs defense seems to be the real problem as we never get the ball moving in the warm Florida rain. Our defense is never really in sync either, and we are outgained 419-229. A very telling stat is that we were 1/10 on 3rd downs and they were 7/14. All of that didn't matter though as we found ourselves with a 21-20 lead with 4:00 to play. Rob Johnson leads the Bucs on a 14 play drive to setup the game winning field goal with 0:20 to play, and we get our first loss.

At the midpoint of the season, we have a very potent offense, producing 230 points - by far the most in the league, but a suspect defense. Bend-don't-break seems to be the rule. We have a one game lead in the AFC Central over Tennessee, who we have beaten already.

Our big problem is teams are burning us in the passing game - we have the league's best rush defense but worst pass defense.

I tweaked our gameplan a little to try to help the pass defense out - see if it works at all. At this point, opponents are averaging 8.0 per pass against us, so we can't be much worse.

JAX (7-1) at PITTSBURGH(2-6)
Should be a cakewalk right? Well, almost. We survive a furious 4th quarter which saw Pitt put up 21 points, but our 27 was enough of a cushion and we held on. My tweaks to our gameplan fielded 389 passing yards and 11.4 per attempt. Hmm. Backup TB Burress had 32 yards on 4 carries to make our rushing numbers respectable, while Scottie looked pretty good: 24-34-0, 1 TD, 295 yards. Rookie Malano had 6 catches for 101 yards to lead the way.

---BYE---
We've been pretty lucky with injuries so far, but you never complain too much about a bye week.

PITTSBURGH (2-7) at JAX (8-1)
The rematch. We both had byes last week. The extra time to prepare and the home town fans help a lot, and our secondary gets tired of all of the bad press they've been getting. S Sam Shade comes up with an intereception for a TD in the 3rd, CB Jacobs with another in the 4th, and Mare kicks four field goals to finish out the scoring as we win 25-0. After giving up almost 400 passing yards last week, this week we yield only 96. Conquergood led the quiet offense with 125 yards and the passing game looked terrible - 5 bad throws from Uffins and a couple of drops, despite excellent pass protection.

TENNESSEE (6-4) at JAX (8-1)
Still the second best team in the division, which means we move have a three game lead. I'm not sure what has happened to our offense since our early season explosiveness, but again we struggle here. Like our first meeting with them, they beat us in almost all phases of the game, except penalties and once again we win narrowly, 20-10. The most interesting part of this game were inuries. Uffins went down in the first quarter. Bandhauer had a pretty good performance in relief: 20-31-0, 222 yards. Conquergood went down in the second quarter and Burruss was miserable in relief. and PK Mare went down in the third quarter. PN Hentrich was 1/3 on field goal attempts.

Conquergood is the only player listed as injured for our next game. It's hard to pull him - he's leading the league in rushing and TDs and might be in line for another trifecta, but we cannot risk him being injured in the playoffs.

JAX (10-1) at BALTIMORE (4-7)
With Conquergood out of the lineup, we expect Scottie to carry the team. Things don't go exactly as planned. Burruss surprises everybody and managed 96 yards, while Uffins is 20-39-2, 181 yards, 2 TDs. This is a game where we were outgained 366-288, but still win 23-20. The hero of the day is Burruss, who was apparantly the only player to show up on our team.

At 11-1, we have scored a solid 325 points, still leading the league (Miami is #2 with 293). Our defense has yielded 218, which is #14. Our big weakness is still a soft pass defense. We are only 11-1 team in the league, with Seattle at 10-2 and a handful of 9-3 and 8-4 teams.

Ack - somehow I lost my report on the last quarter of the season. Anyway, our scores were:

JAX 24, Cleveland 10
Jax 28, JETS 20
JAX 37, Buffalo 11
Jax 13, CINCY 38

Those last three games were against playoff teams. In the final game, we had already clinched homefield through the playoffs so I benched Uffins and Conquergood. Burress went 12 carries, 25 yards, 2 fumbles, Barnhauer threw four picks, and we had 86 yards of total offense.

STATS

Uffins was good - 3485 yards, 21/15, 88.8 rating. He also led the league with 7.97 yards per pass and only took 23 sacks.

Our running game was pretty solid. Conquergood had 1094 yards, 13 TDs rushing, andother 27 catches for 400 yards and 3 TDs receiving, as he continues this even-odd thing he has going. His average was only 3.7 per carry though. Burress got three starts and was mediocre... 382 yards, 4 TDs, 3.4 per carry.

Nobody was especially excellent receiving, though rookie WR Malano had 64 catches for 915 yards and 3 TDs - maybe ROY credentials. Our slot receiver, Henson, had 962 yards and 5 TDs to lead the team. Our supposed #1 receiver, JaJuan Dawson responded to his fat contract extension with 41 catches, 440 yards, 2 TDs. Pathetic.

On defense, Ted Johnson led the way, as you might expect: 92 tackles, 35 assists, and a sack. Rookie LB Jonathan Hansen was excellent too - 84 tackles, 23 assists, though he did not record a sack. Free agent aquisition Justin Prior anchored the line with 9.5 sacks, 7 batted passes, 4 hurries. We never really got much of a pass rush going this season.

Those numbers are borne out by relatively poor pass coverage numbers across the board. I know they say "Dance with the one that brought you" but I think we're going to have to blitz more in the playoffs.

Pretty solid numbers all around on the offensive line.

Team stats:

AVERAGE YARDS
Rushing: 112.1/74.3/99.5
Passing: 237.0/270.3/217.8

AVERAGE PLAY
Rushing: 3.5/2.8/3.6
Passing: 7.6/7.8/6.5

The numbers bear out what we already knew - we are controlling the line of scrimmage but getting burned in the passing game.

PLAYOFFS

Round 1
ARIZONA 24, Detroit 19
Chicago 39, TAMPA BAY 33
Cincinatti 13, DENVER 10
MIAMI 38, Jets 10

Our first opponent in the playoffs is Cincinatti - who as you might recall handed us a pretty lobsided loss two weeks ago. There is a bit of bad news for this game. I, um, forgot to put Uffins and Conquergood back in the lineup.

As it turns out, I'm a genius. Bandhauer throws for 374 yards, Burress is adequate, and our defense comes up with seven turnovers as we (ahem) win 27-0.

The line up has been (ahem) tweaked for the next game.

Our next opponent is 12-4 Seattle. They are especially interesting because despite their record, the points for, points against pread is 318/300.

They are led by - come on, everybody knows this right? - Daunte Culpepper. He had a solid season, 3579 yards, 20/8, 87.5 rating. Their running game is very weak, and their passing game consists of Derrick Mayes, who was by far their best receiver. They actually offer less of a pass rush than we do.

All four of their losses came on the road, so it's a good thing the game is in Jacksonville.

We come out gunning on the first drive - Uffins completes every pass attempt as we gain 64 yards in the air and 9 yards on Conquergood's lone run. Uffins finds Dawson for the TD with 11:46 to play in the first.

The Seahawks come right back - we are stuffing the run, but Culpepper hits his fullback for a 44 yard TD and the score it tied at 7 with 6:48 to play in the first.

We pound our way back down for another score on our next possession to make it 14-7 with two minutes left in the first. We have already made 10 first downs, mostly on Uffin's passing. Great coverage on the kickoff return, an intentional grounding call, and a good punt return and we are back in business at our 46. Six plays later the score is a more comfortable 21-7 with 12:45 left in the first half.

The defense holds, Uffins lights them up again, but Conquergood drops a third down pass and we settle for the field goal, 24-7 with 7:39 left in the half. Another field goal with about a minute to play makes it 27-7. They get a big run to get deep into our territory but are called for an insane number of penalties as the half winds down and the clock expires with them at their own 27 facing 1st-and-45.

In the first half we were very successful throwing the ball, but not running well. We survived Daunte's initial onslaught and look to have settled down.

The game quickly gets out of hand in the second half. we sack Daunte six times, they lose a fumble and we roll, 40-7.

Scottie Uffins was awesome - 26-35-0, 339 yards, 4 TDs. Rookie Malano came up with 6 catches for 63 yards and a TD. Conquergood atoned for a poor rushinger performance (15-51) with outstanding play in the passing game (5-73, 1TD).

We got 2.5 sacks from Breckterfield, an unheralded second string DT drafted in the 5th round last season. Backup DE DiMaggio had 8 tackles. Our relentless blitzing forced Culpepper into 8 bad throws, a batted pass, and three scrambles.

Next up: the Superbowl, in Jacksonville, against WASHINGTON.

THE SUPERBOWL

The Redskins are also led by a legend. Kurt Warner may well be league MVP this season with a 4255 yard, 27/8, 92.8 season.

The Skins' running backs are nothing special, but they do have a receiving corps which commands respect.

Their defense is anchored by a strong pass rush and they have a pair of great corners in Charles Woodson and Champ Bailey. Their safeties, Lethon Flowers and Brian Dawkins are also tough. The one bit of good news - they look like they are playing "Empty Cupboard" at linebacker and DT.

I think the burden of winning this game falls squarely on the capable sholders of D.J. Conquergood.

We trade puntsin the first quarter before Uffins gets in a little groove and gets us down to the Skins' 25. The drive stalls and Mare comes on to kick the field goal. 3-0, JAX.

We are surprised as the Skins come back out running the ball. We shut Warner down early, but they are able to run the ball very effectively. Their drive also stalls at the 22 yard line and the 39 yard FG attempt is wide left.

The teams trade a few punts before the line is finally able to open a hole for Conquergood who scampers 22 yards for a TD and we take a two score lead, 10-0, JAX.

We force a punt and coach Nixon decides to go for the kill. Uffins heaves one way downfield - the ball travelled 60 yards in the air, but landed in the hands of Skin's free safety Dawkins, who fell down with the pass at the 13.

Washington marches up the field on a drive aided by penalties, but has to settle for a field goal, 10-3, JAX. We're moving the ball well as the first half winds down, but coach Nixon again goes for the kill, and again it is picked off, this time by Woodson with eight seconds left in the half. He returns it to our 47. Warner throws the deep ball, complete at the 16, but time expired before they could call a timeout and try for a field goal. At the half the score was still 10-3, JAX.

The teams trade punts, but we are winning the field position struggle. We get to midfield, but Uffins is once again intercepted, this time by Bailey at the 35. No harm done and the teams continue to trade punts for a couple of series.

With 14:43 left in the game, Hentrich shanks a punt - it only goes 29 yards, and beats the coverage so it is returned 16. Washington takes over at our 40, down 7. Warner to German, 11. Warner to Cooper, 8. Kuberski for 1. 3rd and 1 at our 20: incomplete. FG attempt: WIDE RIGHT!!!. 10-3, JAX.

Martin Gramatica has now missed two FGs in this game.

On 3rd-and-2, looking the get some field position, Uffins hits his TE, Gonzalez, who rumbles for 32 yards down to the 34. We make it down to their 19 but again stall and settle for a FG to go up two scores with 9:17 remaining. 13-3, JAX.

Warner struts out and stands under center. Cooly leading his team down the field, he gets to the JAX 45. 3rd-and-4, he drops back, looking deep. He doesn't see unchecked LB Sanyika coming from behind and he is leveled on a HUGE play that forces a punt with 5:32 to play.

Uffins comes out and starts chewing up clock. With 2:08, we punt back to Washington. They take over at their 28, down 10. We come out in the prevent - Warner finds his man, guns the ball 50 yards deep and it's picked off!!! Coleman nabbed it, returning the ball 31 yards to midfield, probably sealing the win.

We run out the clock and the game is over!!

PRESENTING YOUR 2007 WORLD CHAMPIONS - THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS!!!

The MVP goes to the main free agency aquisition this season, Justin Prior. In a game dominated by defense, it's only fitting that an end would get the MVP.

Our defense showed up big time in this game, holding the potent Washington offense to 3 points and only 239 yards. Uffins did better than I expected against the all-pro secondary of the Skins, completing 18-35 for 228 yards, although he was picked off three times.

If you told me that our defense would only force one turnover and that Conquergood would have 68 yards rushing in this game, I would have expected a pretty bad loss. Kudos to our team for a great season.

Way to go, Shag! I'm very glad that Daunte didn't come back to bite us after you had to trade him-I'd have felt awful if my keeper choice had cost us in a playoff run!

awesome! i knew these guys had a superbowl in them, if only they stayed healthy!

i was a bit worried when i saw you had had to trade culpepper as he had a great season last year, but it turly paid off. and obviously my selection of Bandhauer in the draft was crucial too.

---2008---
Score for last season was 82, dragged down by Profitability(60) and Difficulty(72).

Our scout's contract is up this year. He is certainly the best on the market. We have to pony up some big money to compete with Miami - our scout is getting $700K for the next five seasons.

We had a couple of major retirements: Starting DE Mike Strahan and LB Peter Boulware.

FREE AGENCY
We have two major free agents this season in RB Conquergood, who will certainly get the franchise tag, and C Conway.

The next tier of players filing includes S Ronald Coleman, who has started every game since 2002 for us. We do have two outstanding young safeties though in Fulton and Laxdal, and Coleman would probably be a luxury.

Disgruntled WR Jason Ticker is probably on his way out - he has really declined of late and had only 10 catches last season.

Second string RB Burress had 1355 yards and 8 TDs in his three seasons with the Jags. He's been a solid backup, but he is certainly looking for starter money. We're handing him his coat.

Starting G Justin Clancy is eligible. He's not that good, and we did draft a couple of guards last season, so he'll walk.

Backup QB Bandhauer is another big question. He's restricted, but I doubt we can afford to keep him.

As an interesting point, DE Kyle Hancock - you know, the one who sat on our roster all of last season injured with no ratings, tying up $1M of cap space - is back again, this time a free agent. Wonder how many offer a guy with 4/4/29 ratings will get??

So on to free agency ... we get a couple of very interesting offers. The most interesting is a scrub QB and the #4 pick in the draft for DE Justin Prior (who still is average popularity despite his Superbowl MVP). The #4 pick overall is interesting, but if we lose Prior, our line falls apart.

We have 33 players and $28M in cap space, estimated draft of about $7M. Conquergood will probably command $10M, meaning we need to supplement our draft with another 5 players in $11M.

Our top priorities will be on the lines.

I open with an offer to Conway, who we must get back - his loyalty should help immensely. Larry Allen is looking for another go, this time with a winner. He's still very sharp, so we make an offer. We also make a play for DT Wayne Cramer, who is in his 7th year and is a great pass rusher - something we really need.

As expected, Conway signs immediately. We have the only bid on Cramer too, which is surprising. Jason Tucker gets an offer for 14M/2 years, and decides he needs to think about it.

Larry Allen was fighting between loyalty to the Lions and wanting to play for a winner for more money. In the end, he went back to the Lions, and I'm in a spot to try to improve our line. We make an offer to Matt Campbell, who is very much the same situation.

We get a huge signing at DT in Carlos Grande, an 8th year man from the Falcons. A great run stopper and a great pass rusher, we lock him up for four seasons. This should be a huge improvement for our defense.

With that, I withdraw our offer to Campbell - our salary situation will be a little tricky now.

In stage 10, Tucker is still waiting for a "serious" offer - thinking Cleveland's offer of $14.2/2yrs is junk. In week 11, he signs, but the money was not there any more.

We finally work things out with Conquergood, who comes back for 4 years, $35M.

THE DRAFT
We have the draft spot that everybody in the league hungers for: #32.

Round 1. Courtney King, LB, Penn State
With the retirement of Boulware, we need some more bodies at LB. King looks to be an outstanding run stopper and blitzer, with solid pass defense skills. At 6-2, 219, he may be a little undersized. He looks like he may be good enough to start immediately.

Round 2. Levon Teague, G, Columbia
An Ivy League lineman? Why not? Teague is our third G drafted in the league two seasons as we look to grow some talent there. He figures to be a great run blocker and average pass blocker.

Round 3. Mickey Germaine, WR, LA-Laffayette
Looks to be a solid possession receiver. Replacing Tucker on the roster.

Round 4. Kendall Johann, QB, Alabama
Need pick, taking Barnhauer's spot.

Round 5. Will Harden, RB, Morehead St
Need pick, taking Burress' spot.

Round 6. Ian Cooper, C, Stanford
Figures to be backing up Conway for three years and moving on.

Round 7. Cornell Lynch, RB, Auburn

All in all, a disappointing draft. We got some decent players, but our #1 guy is the only one who is likely to have any impact on the team.

After getting our rookies signed, we have about $180,000 free and still need a CB and TE. Let's see how things look after camps.

Our guys came through camps fine.

With our trio of Hansen, King, and Johnson, we will have the most feared linebacking corps in the league, for sure.

The #1 overall pick was a bust this season - KC was looking at building around a star QB, Roger Cunningham. I think we can safely call him a bust: 4/4/5/2/1/10/3/3/38/26.

In the training camp casualties, there is a running back which makes Conquergood look like chopped liver. Willie Giles is a free agent and asking for $990,000 to play this season. I pass - it's just too wrong.

RESULTS
We are explosive in pre-season, scoring a ton of points. Unfortunately Deltha O'Neal sprains his neck and may not be back this season. This leaves us very shaky at CB.

JAX (0-0) at ST LOUIS (0-0)
We roll to a 20-3 lead at the half and coast to a 26-13 win. Unforunately, rookie LB Courtney King will miss most of the season with a torn calf - he may never be the same player again .

JAX (1-0) at CAROLINA (1-0)
Conquergood has his second straight poor game, while Uffins is sharp, averaging over 10 yards an attempt. The defense comes up with four turnovers and we totally shut down the Panthers en route to a 36-8 drubbing.

JAX (2-0) at TENNESSEE (2-0)
Facing off against our usually division lead challenger, this one goes down to the wire. Conquergood finally has a big game - 149 yards, while Uffins has come into his own, throwing 4 TDs. Tennessee outgains us 410-367 but we get the 35-28 win on the road.

JAX (3-0) at PITTSBURGH (0-3)
We start the season on a five game road trip. The hapless Steelers are next. Another 100 yards for Conquergood, andother 3 TDs for Uffins, another game where the other team outgains us and we still win, 34-17. Pitt threw for 489 yards against us. We really need Deltha back, because nobody is willing to let us pry loose another CB and we have no cap space.

JAX (4-0) at BALTIMORE(1-3)
The last game of this road trip. Our defense shows up and actually shuts down an opponent. Conquergood and Uffins are both sharp on offense. Dawson had 8 catches for 122 yards. On defense, FS Jacobs came up with 2 picks while SS Shade managed one more to go with 8 tackles. Prior recorded the only sack.

PITTSBURGH (1-4) at JAX (5-0)
Ah the comforts of home, playing in the 90 degree Florida rain. We get a bad case of the dropsies, especially in the form of fumbles. The Steelers get a field goal to close to 14-6 with 3:44 left. We immediately go three-and-out, punt the ball, and it's returned for a TD. The conversion, of course, was good. We were in position to win the game, but Mare's FG attempt was wide right and we went to OT. Overtime was largely a stalemate, but the Steelers got in position and kicked the winning FG with 0:18 left in OT to give us our first loss.

BUFFALO (3-2) at JAX (5-1)
For a change, the comeback goes our way. We fell way behind in this one, down 27-13 with 8:00 to play. We put together a nice drive, score, kickoff, three imcomplete passes, a nice drive, score, three incomplete passes, drive and kick the winning FG with 0:05 to play. 30-27, JAX. Conquergood was miserable, and Uffins was a mixed bag, getting 4 TD passes but three picks. Dawson had 8 catches for 126 yards, Malano 7 for 112 yards.

TENNESSEE (3-4) AT JAX (6-1)
Apparantly the Titans are down this season. They get a fumble return for a TD, but Uffins is on a mission this year. He has yet another 4 TD game, while Conquergood rushes for 128 yards and had two TD receptions as we win, 30-17.

At mid-season, we are 7-1, tied with Cincy for the best record in the division. Maybe Larry Allen knew something was up when he stayed with Detroit instead of coming to us: the Lions have the league's best record at 7-0.

We have scored 242 points, again most in the league, and our 133 points allowed is very middle of the road. Given injuries to two key starters on defense, I guess that's pretty good news.

Uffins at this point is a man among boys. He already has 20 TD passes. He has thrown for 1959 yards and averages 8.62 per attempt for an unthinkable 110.3 rating. He has only 6 ints, 3 in one game.

Conquergood is doing well too. He's been very up and down this season, but so far he has 693 yards (#3) and 7 TDs (#2) rushing and another 3 TDs receiving.

Dawson and Malano are fighting to see who will lead this team in receptions. Dawson has 41 for 687 yards and 5 TDs. Malano has 44 for 642 yards and 7 TDs.

The only downside on offense is that Uffins has been sacked 20 times already. He was only sacked 23 times all of last season.

Some team stats before we get back to the season. We are getting 131 yards rushing per game, #4 in the league. That is balanced against 254.1 yards passing, #5. Our run defense is amazing - opponents get only 72.7 yards per game. They make it up in the air though - nobody gives up more than out 274 yards passing.

JAX (7-1) at CINCY (7-1)
Cincinatti is almost the opposite. They have a very solid pass defense but are soft against the run. They are a run-oriented offense, and we are playing at their house. This will be a huge test for us. We pass the test, with Conquergood anchoring a decent ground attack and Uffins looking pretty good. They took away the deep ball, but we forced five fumbles, recovering three. We were deadly on third downs on both sides of the ball and won the total yardage 358-191. Time of possession is also interesting: we held the ball for 39 minutes.

--BYE--
We had a number of dinged up players, so this is good timing. O'Neal and King are still likely to miss the whole season.

CINCINATTI (7-2) at JAX (8-1)
Both teams had a bye-week, now we rematch. More of the same - we outgain them 381-212, crush their running game, shut them down on third down, and win 24-7. Their only points were on an interception returned for a TD.

Rookie WR Mickey Germain is having back surgery and is out until late 2009.

CLEVELAND (4-6) at JAX (9-1)
Detroit is 10-0, but we have sole ownership of the league's second best record. Cleveland doesn't offer much of a fight as Conquergood runs for 100 yards and a TD and catches two passes for another two TDs, while Uffins casually gets 213 yards and 2 TDs on 12/18 passing. We win 24-10.

NEW ORLEANS (6-5) at JAX (10-1)
On our first play from scrimmage, Conquergood gets through the line and dashes 86 yards for a TD. He added another TD later for 187 yards rushing, plus two catches for another 62 yards. Uffins had a tough day but only turned the ball over once as he sat back and let D.J. do the work. Johnson had 10 tackles and 3 assists, Hansen 9 tackes, 5 assists, and a sack, and Sanyika 6 tacjles, two assists, and an interception as our linebackers were dominating.

Detroit finally lost a game (at 8-4 San Diego) to drop to 11-1 with us. Interestingly, there are only three NFC teams with winning records this season. We are firmly in the driver's seat in the AFC - four teams vie for second place with 8-4 records.

ATLANTA (8-4) at JAX (11-1)
One of the three NFC teams with winning records comes to our place. The Falcons have a reputation for being a low scoring, defense minded team. Our guys are bad about giving up big plays in this one - we completely control the stats lines until Randy Moss gets a catch for an 80 yard TD. We march back and score, and they return the ensuing kickoff 107 yards for the TD. Uffins coms out and promptly throws an interception, and they march the short field for the winning TD with 1:11 remaining. They win 34-33, scoring all 34 points in the last eight minutes of the game, ruining a great four TD performance by Conquergood. The main culprit was the offensive line - Uffins was running for his life the whole game: 4 sacks, a fumble, a batted pass, three hurries, and three interceptions.

Detroit played another AFC team with a winning record - Denver - and also dropped to 11-2.

JAX (11-2) at CLEVELAND(4-9)
Since dominating 2000-2002, Cleveland has been the doormat of our division, and here they are again. Our defense will be happy if it never sees Thomas Jones again. We came into this game yielding 62 rushing yards per game - TJ ran for 241 yards, 3 TDs on 16 carries. They also get a punt return for a TD. This time, however, we get the last laugh - the hard way. We score 23 points in the fourth quarter (two TDs, 3 FGs) including the game winning FG as time expired to take this one on the road, 36-35. Conquergood had 107 yards rushing and a TD. Uffins had 398 yards, 2 TDs, 180 yards of it to Dawson. Mare was 5/5 for field goals.

Detroit plays another team with a winning record, Arizona, and loses their third straight after an 11-0 start.

JAX (12-2) at MIAMI (6-8)
Conquergood is a man possessed. He and Uffins may end up splitting the MVP vote in the league. Conquergood has 143 yards, 3 TDs. Uffins mails in his stats, and we take this one pretty easily, 34-3. Miami was able to pass against us effectively, but we shut them down on 3rd down, and penalties killed them.

This is crazy - Detroit plays their third AFC team in four weeks and loses their fourth in a row. Top team in the NFC is now 11-3-1 Arizona.

I would like to bench our starters for this one since this is a meaningless game for us, but Uffins and Conquergood are both up for some serious hardware this season. Uffins is even a little banged up. On the plus side, Deltha O'Neal is healthy again!!!

BALTIMORE (5-10) at JAX (13-2)
The get a couple of big plays, but we were in charge of this game from the start when S Sam Shade returned a pick for an interception. Conquergood got another 101 yards and a TD, Uffins had a modest day, and nobody got hurt. We win 30-20, and the bye week in the playoffs will be a welcome relief - we are a little banged up across the roster with lots of 0-2 week injuries.

STATS

Uffins did cool off a bit in the second half, but did finish with a fine season: 3901 yards (#4), 32 TDs (#1), 14 picks, 8.3 yards per attempt (#2), and a rating of 96.9.

What more can you say about Conquergood? He should certainly carry the trifecta - 1600 yards rushing (#1), 20 rushing TDs(#1), 4.8 per carry. 415 yards receiving with another 7 TDs.

Our top two receivers both enjoyed Uffins' success this year. Dawson had 1263 yards and 7 TDs on 74 catches - by far the best season for the 9th year veteran. Second year man Malano improved on his rookie campaign, getting 78 catches for 1152 yards, 10 TDs.

Olindo Mare had an interesting time kicking - 33/41 FGs, but missed two PATs: 52/54. Hentrich was solid punting, at 42.3 yard a pop.

The lack of any gaudy numbers on the defense is a sign that they were playing pretty well overall. I'm a little concerned that our leading tackler was our free safety, Laxdal, but it was only 84 tackles, and comes right behind our three linebackers - Johnson (83), Hansen (79), and Sanyika (74 + 5 sacks).

In pass coverage, Leland Jacobs certainly was our main man. With the safety doubling up on the opposite receiver, Jacobs had to lock down his man. With 7 picks and a PDQ of 46.4, it's safe to say he did just that.

As a team, we were very effective running the ball, getting 154.0 yards per game (#2). Passing was also solid at 251.2 yards per game (#6). Our defense numbers are skewed by that Cleveland game, but we still finished #1 in rush defense at a paltry 78.3 yards per carry, while opponents smoked us for 256.8 passing yards (#32).

RUSHING: 4.4/3.8/3.9
PASSING: 8.2/6.7/6.5

TURNOVER RATIO: +9
3rd DOWN: .452/.368/.335

nice one, looking forward to hearing about the playoffs!

Sackattack, as we're back to you next and it's the end of the 10 year cycle, could you post a position by position roster evaluation after you've got the roster set for the start of the next season please?

but we still finished #1 in rush defense at a paltry 78.3 yards per carry

oh man! how did we ever win a game?

By the way, this season was by far our most prolific offense - 491 points scored. Our defense only allowed 277, surprisingly #6 in the league.

PLAYOFFS

ROUND 1
Atlanta 17, NEW ORLEANS 7
CHICAGO 20, Washington 13
New York Jets 20, CINCINATTI 17
SAN DIEGO 27, New England 12

ROUND 2
ARIZONA 28, New Orleans 14
San Diego 27, BUFFALO 24
DETROIT 45, Atlanta 24

JETS (11-6) at JACKSONVILLE (14-2)
The Jets were a high scoring team this season, led by - how could it be any different? - Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper had a great season, finishing with a 97.5 rating and leading the league at 8.4 yards per attempt. Their feature back is Edgerrin James, who actually only plays about half of the snaps. They have three very dangerous receivers in Wells (1040 yards, 7 TDs), Hartnett (1000 yards, 3 TDs), and Derrick (880 yards, 6 TDs). Not the offense we need to be running into...

For all of their explosiveness on offense, they are suspect on defense, especially in the passing game.

Their first drive, they slowly march down the field. When they get to the redzone, our boys stiffen, dropping James for a loss on 3rd-and-1, and they settle for a field goal. 3-0, JETS.

On our second play from scrimmage, Uffins hit his slot receiver, Harden, for 47 yards, down to the Jets 35. A couple of plays later, Conquergood is injured and rookie RB Lynch comes on. He goes up the middle for 7, up the middle for 11, TD. 7-3, JAX.

On the first play of their next drive, FS Laxdal steps up and hits James on a sweep, kocking the ball loose. DE DiMaggio falls on it and we take over at the JAX 24. Lynch pounds it up the middle again for another 5, but Uffins is intercepted at the 1 and we blow a big opportunity.

The Jets drive to mid-field, punt and pin us deep. We go nowhere and Hentrich shanks the punt, setting them up at our 35. We knock Culpepper out of the game, and their backup, Page, cannot move the ball against us, and they settle for a FG. 7-6, JAX.

Uffins comes out throwing and quickly leads us downfield for a field goal, 10-6, JAX. The Jets go nowhere, punt, Uffins hits Dawson on a 44 yarder at the two minute warning as we advance to their 8. Uffins hits Hensen in the endzone on 3rd-and-6 for a TD. 17-6, JAX

To be honest, the second half wasn't very interesting, and we win 23-9. Something of a hollow victory, since Culpepper didn't play most of it, but hey - we were without our star too.

Our defense held James to 8 yards on 12 attempts. They had 14 yards rushing as a team.

Lynch was no Conquergood, but he did get 74 yards and a TD in backup duties. Uffins picked up the slack, throwing for 331 and only the one interception. Dawson had 140 yards receiving.

Now for the bad news - Conquergood is out for the rest of the playoffs.

SAN DIEGO (13-5) at JACKSONVILLE (15-2)
San Diego is another team in our image - they scored 427 and allowed 309 - almost exactly the same as us last season.

They have a pretty solid QB in Brock Berry, but he doesn't have anything in the way of deep threat receivers. They have a decent but not overwhelming running back in Adam Carter. They have an aging defense which we should be able to humilite. I would expect us to win by 30 if we had Conquergood.

With Lynch starting at RB, I tweak our game plan to feature more first down throwing. DJ got the first down carry 62% of the time on first down - now it will be 50%. Also missing from this game is starting TE Tony Gonzalez, and all three of our DTs are hurt.

On their first drive, JAX goes nowhere. Prior gets a sack, they go nowhere, and we take over at our 46. Lynch sweeps for 18, Uffins to FB (turned TE) Price for 18, Uffins to Malano for 18, TD.

San Diego comes out and actually gets a first down. They quickly stall though, but surprise the world when they leave the offense on the field after missing on a 3rd-and-3 pass from their 36. The fourth down pass is short, and we take over with great field position.

Uffins to Malano for 10, Lynch runs off tackle for 18, Uffins to Dawson for 8, TD.

And just like that it was 14-0. San Diego would fight back in the second quarter to close to 14-10. With 3:55 remaining in the half, we come out in a hurry up offense. Uffins to Malano for 16, Lynch sweeps for 31, Uffins scrambles for 5, Uffins to Dawson for 15, TD. It was 21-10 and San Diego never threatened again as we rolled to a 38-17 win.

Lynch ran for 105 yard, Uffins threw for 223 but 5 TD - not a bad day's work.

Next up - THE SUPERBOWL. That's right - we're back. Any guesses for who we face?

DETROIT (14-4) at JACKSONVILLE(16-2)
Before both teams skipped a little bit late in the season, it looked like destiny that these two teams would meet in this game. And now here we are.

They have an outstanding QB in Donnell Barrale who put up a 101.8 rating this season, throwing only 4 picks. However, this is a run first team. They got seven games of production out of Willie Giles before he dislocated his elbow. We don't have to face him. Most of their carries came from Antonio Talley, who is not so scary.

What is scary is their army of receivers. Why they ever bother to run the ball is beyond me. With Tim Dwight, David Boston, and flashy rookie Skip Madrid, they are deadly at wideout. Madrid will likely be the rookie of the year - playing at slot receiver all season, he had 74 receptions for 1110 yards and 5 TDs. And he doesn't start.

On defense, they bring a huge pass rush, but are not much at stopping the run. Their DBs are not very good either, so if our line can hold off the heat, Uffins should be able to pick them apart.

We take the opening kickoff and come out firing. Uffins hits on five of six passes and we never get to third down as we dirve the field for the opening TD. 7-0, JAX.

On the ensuing drive, the unthinkable happens again. On 4th-and-1 at their own 38, the go for again. They send the hobbling Giles out to the huddle and line up in a fullhouse backfield. We setup in a goalline stand opposite them and wait for the run. Giles gets the pitch and runs off-tackle, but Prior is these to stand him up at the line of scrimmage, and we take over on downs.

They are getting a lot of pressure on Uffins as he finds himself scrambling out of the pocket on three consecutive plays. Finally, he gets some time and finds Henson at the 4. On the next play, rookie RB Harden pounds the ball in for the TD and a two TD lead. 14-0, JAX

We force a punt, drive the field, but are held to a 51 yard FG attempt, and it misses wide right. As the first quarter winds down, the sleeping giant has only 8 yards passing, while we gained 11 first downs on 148 yards of offense.

On 4th-and-7 at their own 36, they go for it AGAIN. This time Barrale finds his slot receiver, Madrid, crossing through the 4 deep zone coverage, and they convert. They take that momentum all the way down the field, Madrid catching four passes on the drive, as they get the TD. 14-7, JAX.

Uffins hits a couple of nice passes for 17 yards to FB Salcedo, 22 yards to WR Hensen, and Lynch runs for 18 to get us to 1st-and-10 at their 22. WR Malano is injured on 2nd-and-10, dropping the ball in the process. We settle for the FG and lead, 17-7, JAX. Without Conquergood, Gonzalez, or Malano, our offense may start having some real problems now.

Both teams have a couple of three-and-out series as we approach half-time, until Barrale hits Madrid on a deep shot. LB Johnson finally runs him down at our 20, after a gain of 47. They attempt the 37 yard FG and it's.... WIDE LEFT! At the half, the score remains 17-7.

The second quarter was all them. At half time they have 91 yards passing, 63 yards rushing, and 8 first downs. We have 14 first downs on 74 rushing yards and 145 passing.

We kick off the them to start the second half. Barrale hits Madrid on the opening play for 16 yards. They get our to their 45 and face 4th-and-1. They decide to go for it again, this time with a 3WR set. We somehow manage to line up in an "8-Man Front, 4-Deep Zone". Barrale hits his FB for a short gain and they convert. A big run puts them down to our 13, but a stop for a loss and an unsportsmanlink conduct penalty give them 3rd-and-27 at the 30. They settle for the field goal, and it is once again a one score difference, 17-10, JAX.

On our drive, Uffins comes out in the shotgun on first down and fires deep downfield, hitting little used WR Rose for 48. We're now at their 35 and hopefully looking to score again. On the next play, Uffins hits Henson for 28, and Lynch takes it the last 7 for the TD. 24-10, JAX.

Great teams know they have to respond when the other team scores, and these guys did just that.

They go three and out, Tucker gets a bad punt off which O'Neal returns to the Detroit 42. With 5:25 to play in the 3rd, up 14, it's time to put these guys away. Uffins to Rose for 18. Uffins to Dawson for 15. A sack, a penalty, and a stuffed run give us 3rd-and-goal at the 19. Uffins finds Dawson in the endzone - TOUCHDOWN!! 31-10, JAX.

Detroit goes three and out to end the third quarter. Lynch takes over at this point, as we start grinding up clock. We chew up four minutes before punting - they take over at their 10. Our prevent D forces three and out and we get the ball back at our 46. This one may be over.

We get downfield in a hurry, Conquergood actually getting some carries along the way. (Guess we're into our bench now - I didn't have enough players to be able to inactive him). We get the field goal and are up by a commanding 24 points with 6:07 to play. 34-10, JAX.

The Lions come out in a 4WR set, we sit back in our prevent zone. Barrale looks deep, spots Boston and fires. It's picked off!. Jacobs, our star at CB, comes down with it, and returns it 39 yards to the Detoit 29 with 5:42 to play. Mare comes on for another FG with 3:52 to play, and this one is over. 37-10, JAX

Not so fast, say the Lions. Tim Dwight returns the kickoff 107 yards against our guys, who had already started celebrating. 37-17, JAX.

We manage to hold onto the onside kick attempt though. Conquergood goes 37 yards on his first carry, rookie RB Harden comes in for a carry and plows into the endzone. 44-17, JAX with 2:20 to play. What a crazy ending in the works here.

We force a three and out, Conquergood gets 17 yards on his next carry but fumbles at the end and Detroit recovers. No harm done though as the clock expires.

PRESENTING YOUR BACK-TO-BACK WORLD CHAMPIONS, THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

The most telling stat of the game: Net passing yards for Detroit - 112.

Second most telling stat: Uffins sacks - 1.

Lynch got 92 yards and a TD as our starting RB. Harden gave him a breather periodically with 8 carrues for 23 yards and 2 TDs. Conquergood came on for mop-up work and had 8 carries for 68 yards.

Uffins was named MVP for his 298 yards and 2 TDs. Dawson was his primary target, with 7 catches for 113 yards and a TD. Hensen (3-76), and Rose (3-70, 1TD) were also explosive.

OK, You got me. I'm one of those folks with Voodoo wideo that crashes all the time with FOF 2001. I made a point about pressing Ctrl-S all the time while reporting on a season, but missed that here. I had already written up the other playoff results and was about to do our run when it crashed. So, I restarted and realized I had to rerun the playoffs since I hadn't hit Ctrl-S.

It was the only time I actually lost data on this turn. Sorry for the confusion.

Also andy, very quick again - teams actually averaged 78.3 yards per game against us, not per carry.

oh right! i thought it was some kind of horrific glitch in the game, rather than a crash induced thing. heh.

Bold indicates a keeper

I'm calling Jonathan Hansen my keeper. I have attempted to forward the file SackAttack but my ISP is having problems today. Get it out there soon.

Oh, great. No pressure on me after 2 straight rings, eh?

Andy - I'll try to do the evaluation. No promises.

I don't know when I'll get to the file because I'll be out all day Saturday and mi madre has dropped subtle hints to the effect that there are plans for Sunday, so hopefully by Monday I'll have a season done.
