NEW YORK JETS Dynasty
Front Office Football 2004
Dynasty Report New York Jets I chose to begin a career with the New York Jets. I live in New York and have been a fan for many years. My rules are simple. No contract reconstructions until the last year of the player’s contract, no trades once the regular season begins, no swapping equal picks (ie. a first for first), attempt to operate at a profit, in another words no outrageous bonus to win a player in Free Agency or a staff member unless I can afford it. I will watch the games through the scoreboard, but my coaches have total control. Only one weeks worth of games a day can be simmed, a season should last approximately a month with preseason, regular season, free agency, draft and training camp. I do not want to rush through and have no idea what has happened around the league. Draft files will be imported in from TCY, unless I do see that the 2004 draft files fall within similar files to TCY. We have three players that we would like to keep who are in their last year of contract, Tackle Kareem McKenzie, kicker Doug Brien and OL JP Machado. Being this close and knowing that Pennington, Ellis, Abraham, and Becht are up the following year tough decisions will have to be made. The team sold 72,600 seats for the 2003 season. The New York Jets have the second highest cost for a family of four to attend a game, $463, second to the New York Giants at $531. The Jets stadium is rated very good, while the field and parking are average. Consideration for renovations or building a new stadium will be visited following the season. Right now approximately 75% are in support of building a new facility. 2003 AFC Report
Around the League
Division Favorites (based on preseason power ratings). AFC North Could this be the year that Cincinnati finally breaks out of the cellar, and even wins the division? It is possible. Jon Kitna (56 rating) had a wonderful off-season and is ready to be the starting quarterback for the struggling franchise. The running game features Dillon (45) and Rudi Johnson (42), along with a passing game of Kitna to Johnson (50), Warrick (53) and rookie Kelley Washington (30). The offensive line is solid lead by the center, Braham (70) and tackle Anderson (62). Defensively they look for DE Justin Smith (43) to break out along with solid play from DT Williams (66), LB Brian Simmons (66) and MLB Kevin Hardy (64) who came in to replace departed Takeo Spikes. Baltimore and Pittsburgh should battle for second place, however, neither appears to be strong enough to make it to the playoffs this season. Baltimore is led by QB Kyle Boller (26) who will take his rookie lumps this season. Jamal Lewis (61) is coming off of knee surgery and has to attempt to carry the load for this team. The receivers just are not good, making it easy for teams to key on emerging TE Todd Heap (55). Defensively Ray Lewis (65) and Peter Boulware (69) lead the charge, however it is thin after that. Pittsburgh has a nice group of LB’s, Farrior (53), Bell (50), Gildon (70) and Porter (64), however not much else. Maddox (14) appears to be a one-year wonder, and Bettis (38) is on the downside of his career and is not the starter anymore. If they can somehow get the ball to Ward (66) and Burress (52) they might have a fighting chance to get to .500. Cleveland is a mess right now, their O-Line is weak with the exception of Verba, and not one starter rated over 28. Couch (44) will be looking to get rid of the ball quickly and not be able to take advantage of deep threats Johnson (67) and Morgan (54). Their starting LB’s have a combined rating of 70 that is for all three of them. There run D is going to fall heavy on the DT’s who are average at best. AFC South The South appears to be a two-team race, Indianapolis and Tennessee, no surprise here. Indianapolis is loaded on the offense side of the ball, Manning (74), James (63), Harrison (72), and Pollard at TE (77) should provide plenty of explosion. Manning should have time to throw with an O-Line that is excellent at pass blocking. The only weakness could be if Indy has to run inside, there guards just are not that good. The defense should be able to get to the quarterback, second year DE Dwight Freeney (53) and Chad Bratzke (75) are excellent pass rushers, and based on their secondary Indy needs to get to the quarterback because of the lack of pass defense skills with the defense backs. Tennessee is a good team but is missing a few pieces to the puzzle. McNair (74) does not have much to work with right now. George (43) is showing his age and although could still get the tough inside yards, many wonder if he will be that effective carrying the ball 20 times per game. The receivers are young, and the Titans lack a deep threat. McNair is more than capable of making all the throws, but with the exception of Wycheck (62), the passing game will struggle at times. Jevon Kearse (69) has developed into a well rounded DE who will be a free agent at the end of the season, Kearse has said that he wants to remain a Titan, time will tell. The Titan’s will struggle to stop the run, but should be solid against the pass, with the pass rushing skills of Kearse, and the ability to shut down receivers with Rolle (67) and Schulters (84) Indy will have to get through Tennessee to win the division. Jacksonville will continue their rebuilding process with first round selection Byron Leftwich (15) leading the offense, however defensivly they should be sound. The expansion Houston Texans enter their second season led by quarterback David Carr (39) and have added some talent to help Carr out. Houston drafted wide out, Andre Johnson (47) who is a burner and will be the deep threat that quarterbacks love to have. They still need to address their O-line that allowed Carr to be sacked a league high last season. On defense they are solid running a D very similar to Pittsburgh, a 3-4. Houston has the LB’s to do so and the corners to cover, Glenn (75) and Coleman (40). Houston will improve on their win total but will probably finish last once again. AFC East Miami is the clear favorite in the East this season. Miami possesses the best talent in the league on defense. They have the highest rated DE’s in Taylor (90) and Burnett (67) and perhaps the best secondary in the league with corners Madison (90) and Surtain (79), and safeties Knight (61) and Marion (68). If Miami can find a way to put some points on the board the road to the AFC Crown goes through Miami. Offensively Fielder (43) has perhaps the toughest inside runner in Ricky Williams (73). Williams can carry the ball 25-30 times per game; he has that kind of endurance. Miami has the make up to do it, they must get through the season strong from start to finish, and something they have struggled with in the past. New England looks to rebound from a disappointing season and get back to the post-season. This is Brady’s (36) second full season as the starter and he still has a lot of development left (Brady’s future – 74). New England’s problem is that they have zero for a running game. New England will rely on their short passing game and depth at receivers to move the football. On defense their line is not that good, however the LB’s and secondary provide strength with perhaps the top corner in the game, Ty Law (92) and SS Rodney Harrison (70) to keep this team aiming for January football. The Jets are led by Chad Pennington (36), who enters his first full season as the team’s starter. Pennington’s spark helped lead the team to the East crown for the first time since 1998. Martin (58) is still solid at RB, but the departure of G Thomas (76) and Coles (59) to Washington leaves this team reeling. Mawae (72) is an all-pro at center, but the guards are rated as the worst in the league. New York is rated near the middle is most categories and that leads you to believe this team is just mediocre. Buffalo enters its second season in the Drew Bledsoe (47) era, and Buffalo is beginning to see that Bledsoe is on the downside of his career. He just does not have any strength left to throw the deep ball, and the receiving corp is without Peerless Price (50) who was is now with Atlanta. Moulds (48) still can go over the middle and get it, but it will be difficult for him to repeat the numbers he had with Price lined up on the same side of the ball. On defense the team looked to improve through free agency, bringing in DT Sam Adams (60), LB Takeo Spikes (56), and safety Lawyer Milloy (66) these additions should help. But not prevent another last place finish. AFC West This division could be the most competitive division in football. Kansas City, Denver and Oakland make this a three-team race while San Diego looks to improve and perhaps get them out of the cellar. Kansas City was perhaps the most explosive team on offense last season but could not make a stop on D, this off-season they addressed some of their defensive needs and have upgraded their D, although they are still vulnerable. Kansas City was relieved to get the news that RB Priest Holmes has recovered from his injury and is at 100%. Holmes (84) is the best all around back in football right now. Holmes will get many touches this season while first round pick Larry Johnson (48) waits for his chance. Trent Green (52) begins his third season with the Chiefs and enjoys his weapons, Holmes, Gonzalez (83), and Kennison (55). Special teams will contribute as well; Kansas City has the best return man in the game, Dante Hall. Denver has made yet another quarterback change. Free agent Jake Plummer (42) joins the Broncos after many almost seasons with Arizona. Denver possesses perhaps the most explosive running back in the league in Clinton Portis (64). Portis was a big surprise last season, and now that defenses are aware of him it should be interesting to see what he can do with a season experience completed. Portis gets to run behind one of the better lines in football and Plummer gets to throw to veteran TE Shannon Sharpe (81), and wideout Rod Smith (58). On defense the Broncos have a solid DL led by DE Trevor Pryce (68) and linebackers Mobely (76), Wilson (59), and Gold (57) to anchor an average defense that hopes to make enough plays to help Denver into the playoffs. The defending AFC Champions look to rebound from their miserable performance in the Super Bowl, however, the oldest team in football (28.1 years old) has many question marks. Can Gannon (55) find that magic one more season with Brown (48), Rice (48), Porter (47) and Garner (59)? The O-line is led by Barret Robins (74) who has overcome his off field problems to protect the aging Gannon. Oakland’s strength on defense is without a doubt their secondary, corners Woodson (76), Shaw (40), Buchanon (30) and safeties Woodson (73) and Dorsett (50) make it difficult for anyone to throw against them. San Diego goes with quarterback Drew Brees (28) for the season. Brees is in the last year of his contract any many are saying that if the team does not see improvement Brees will not be made an offer. Tomlinson (72) continues to demonstrate his all around abilities like his division counter mate Priest Holmes. Opponents can expect a heavy dose of Tomlinson, especially when there is little else. NFC to follow! Last edited by mmarra82 : 12-12-2003 at 10:50 PM. |

2003 NFC Report
NFC North
Minnesota comes in to the 2003 season rated slightly higher than Green Bay in the power ratings poll. Minnesota looks to build on the momentum they created at the end of last season. Minnesota is led by Culpepper (56) and Moss (82) on offense. The Vikes are still in search of a RB, this year the starter will be rookie Onterrio Smith (45). Smith has the ability to be a threat catching the ball, but running with it remains to be seen. The O-line is anchored by center Matt Birk (64) and tackle Bryant McKinnie (55), who is looks to improve from last year’s rookie season. During the off-season Minnesota focused on revamping their D, and they did do that. The additions of linebacker Chris Claiborn (66) and rookie EJ Henderson (33) along with CB Denard Walker (66) from Tennessee could be enough to get Minnesota back to the top of the division. Green Bay is led by the one and only Brett Favre (64), although he still is missing some playmakers that he so desperately needs, Favre continues to put up excellent numbers. Favre does have a solid backfield behind him in Ahman Green (58) and William Henderson (60) to take some of the pressure off of him along with the return of Antonio Freeman (54). The addition of Freeman is a much needed presence at the receiver position. Gone on defense is DE Vonnie Holiday, which hurts this team. Holiday provided the solid all around play that is now going to have to be found through his replacement, Gbaja-Biamila (28) who does not measure up to Holiday. The secondary is OK, but will have to be on top of their game if they want to handle Moss and the Vikes. Chicago and Detroit will battle it out to stay out of the basement. At least Detroit has an excuse, they are rebuilding, Chicago is just clueless. NFC South The defending Super Bowl Champions, Tampa heads into the season with the look to repeat. Tampa is the strongest team, according to the power ratings, and plays in a division that consists of Atlanta, Carolina and New Orleans. Tampa comes back with 19 out of last year’s 22 starters, led by quarterback Brad Johnson (74). Tampa was unable to upgrade their running back position so Pittman (47) will get the nod once again. The O-Line is good, which should give Johnson plenty of time to find K.Johnson (51) and McCardell (50) along with TE Dilger (58). The D-Line features DE Simeon Rice (78), Warren Sapp (72) and up and coming Anthony McFarland (67). This could be the last season McFarland is under the guidance of Sapp who will become a free agent. Linebackers Quarles (64) and Brooks (59) along with CB Barber (84) and Kelly (62) and safety John Lynch (72) make this defense the best in football. The road to the NFC crown goes through Tampa Bay. Atlanta looks to improve on their run to the playoffs last season that saw them end Green Bay’s perfection at home during the playoffs. Michael Vick (32) is explosive, and as he develops the Falcons will find themselves further into the playoffs. But right now Atlanta will be battling Carolina and New Orleans for second place with neither team making it to the post season. Carolina has built a defensive line that could be the cornerstone of the franchise’s future. Last year Julius Peppers (49) tore up the league before his season came to an abrubt halt. Peppers has the potential to be the best DE in the league. On the other side Mike Rucker (53) and DT Kris Jenkins (53) give the Panthers the presence to stop any offense. New Orleans decision to trade Ricky Williams and go with Deuce McAllister (75) seems like the right move now. McAllister is ready to be considered one of the top backs in the league. However, pressure will fall on Brooks (23) who has failed to develop into the quarterback the Saints envisioned a few seasons ago. NFC East The NFC East appears to go through Philly once again. McNabb (52) and company look to avenge the last two season in which they lost the NFC Championship game and take the next step. Philly still does not appear to have the weapons that McNabb needs to score a lot of points but the defense appears to have a lot of tools despit Hugh Douglas’ departure during free agency. Philly brough in Marco Coleman (57) to replace Douglas at end, Philly also drafted DE Jerome McDougle (50) who is a good looking pass rusher. DT Corey Simon (72) is in the top-5 DT’s in the league and gives the Eagles the inside presence they need with a weak MLB. Philly’s secondary is good, led by CB Troy Vincent (86). Vincent is one of the top corners in the league going one on one. On the other side of Vincent they have Bobby Taylor (75) and at FS Brian Dawkins (75). Philly needs to make this year count, both Taylor and Vincent are playing in the last year of their current contract, and if Philly was willing to let Douglas get away one wonders if they will keep their corners who have become the main reason Philly’s defense succeeds. The Giants come in looking to avenge last season’s wild card lost to SanFrancisco. The Giants are led by Kerry Collins (45), although his numbers aren’t impressive Collins seems to get the job done. Tiki Barber (44), Jeremy Shockey (42), Amani Toomer (62) and Ike Hilliard (45) give Collins plenty of offensive targets to throw to, however his offensive line is not good, with ratings of 54, 26, 33, 15, and 27. Veterans, Strahan (71), Hamilton (70), and Barrow (72) look to lead the defense and contain their opponents. Dallas does not appear to be as bad off as expected. QB Quincy Carter (27) has developed slowly but has a nice up side. Hambrick (47) replaces the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, Emmit Smith, and gets to run behind a decent line led by LG Larry Allen (84). Wideouts Galloway (48), Glenn (41) and Bryant (27) will give the Cowboys options with their passing game. Defense is where the ‘Boys are at their best, starting on the D-Line with Ellis (68) and Glover (85) to the safeties Woodson (79) and Williams (43), this could give Dallas their best chance to finish out of the cellar copared to the past few seasons. Washington begins the Patrick Ramsey (27) era, and Ramsey will have plenty of opportunity to prove himself. Washington let Stephen Davis (68) go during the offseason to replace him with power runner Ladell Betts (47). The money they saved by not retaining Davis allowed them to pick up guard Randy Thomas (76) to go along with tackle Chris Samuels (61) and spend money on wide receiver Laverneus Coles (59) to play along side rookie Taylor Jacobs (39). On defense the Redskins have playmakers LaVar Arrington (59) and cornerback Champ Bailey (83). Bailey is in the last year of his current contract and by the looks of Washington’s cap for next year the ‘Skins will have a tough time retaining Bailey. NFC West This could shape up to be the best race in the NFC. Seattle, San Francisco and St. Louis all appear to have the pieces of the puzzle to make this a fun division to watch. Seattle comes in with a little bit of shakeup, they give the nod at QB to Trent Dilfer (54) over Matt Hasselbeck (40) and 2nd year RB Maurice Morris (48) gets the starting spot over Shaun Alexander (46), either way their back gets to run behind FB Mack Strong (72), tackle Walter Jones (60) and RG Chris Gray (61). Dilfer will need his team to be successful on the ground the receivers just do not pose a threat to any of their opponents. On defense the team made some changes this year, and this is some areas that Seattle has lacked. They picked up DT Norman Hand (87) who is the best DT against the run in the league. Also, to strengthen their secondary they drafted CB Marcus Trufant (48) to play along side veteran Shawn Springs (55), SS Reggie Tongue (67) and FS Doug Evans (59). Seattle will need their secondary to shut down the passing games of San Francisco and St. Louis if they want to win the West. San Francisco comes in with a team that will need to score a lot of points. Garcia (50) will have to make the most out of throwing to Terrell Owens (79), who is often fighting off double teams, and 4th round rookie surprise Brandon Lloyd (37). Veteran Garrison Hearst (54) figures to get most of the carries behind a good line. On defense the Niners are missing a pass rusher, and therefore the secondary of Webster (38), Plummer (54), Parrish (67) and Broson (56) will have to bring their “A” game week in and week out. St. Louis looks to rebound after a disappointing season. The weapons on offense are still there. Warner (45) will have plenty to work with this season. Although his rating is as high as in years past, Warner is still the man in St.Louis. Marshall Faulk (70) enters his 10th season as perhaps the most talented all around back in the league. His breakaway speed is down, but do not count him out. Warner has the emerging superstar Torry Holt (86) and the consistency of Isaac Bruce (55) to work with along with a line that bookend tackles, Pace (65) and Turley (82). The defense looks towards FS Aeneas Williams (73) to provide the plays to lead the Rams back to the playoffs. Poor Arizona looked to make some moves during the off season, but all that happened is that they ended up with retreads, sorry Emmitt. Last edited by mmarra82 : 12-12-2003 at 10:50 PM. |

Preseason Roster adjustments
Before the team's first preseason game the Jets look to add some undrafted rookies. It is possible that some will make the team, and G, Kendrick Davis may start. Here is a look at our undrafted rookies who were recently signed to one year deals at the league minimum.
Lamont Barton, RB, Georgia Tech – Lamont comes in to compete to return punts. Lonnie Evans, FB, Wisconsin – Lonnie comes in to compete for a spot on special teams as the second gunner. Daryl Ramos, TE, UCLA – Daryl is attempting to make the team as a long snapper, so starter Becht does not have to do it. Jerome Horste, FL, Nebraska – Jerome is attempting to make the team as a kick returner as well as a 5th receiver. Kendrick Devine, G, Navy- Based on the ability of our guards anyone could help at this position. Bart Brennan, LT, Weber Sate – Bart is a huge man, 6-8 and 323 pounds. He is looking to make the team as the 4th offensive tackle. |

The defense got a solid effort from veteran Marvin Jones who finished with 9 tackles, and Mo Lewis who had 2 interceptions and 5 tackles. The only injury to report is RT Kareem McKenzie who is listed as probable with knee tendonitis. The Jets are home for Cincinnati next week. |

Preseason Week 2
Week 2
Cincinnati Bengals (0-0) at New York Jets (1-0) The Jets faced Cincinnati, expectations are high in Cincinnati, and after this game you can see that the Bengals are a better team. The Bengals beat the Jets 27-3. The Bengals beat the Jets in all aspects of the game, yards 338-247, time of possession 32:56-27:04, and turnovers. The Bengals caused 3 Jets’ fumbles and intercepted Pennington 2 times. The Jets offensive line was beat all day, including center Kevin Mawae who was responsible for giving up 2 sacks. Curtis Martin looked good when he was given the opportunity (6 carries, 41 yards), and the D-Line did apply pressure to the Cincinnati quarterbacks (Kitna and Palmer). Curtis Conway continued his strong preseason for the Jets catching 7 balls for 71 yards and leads the Jets to believe that they might be alright at the receiver position this season. The only injury report was DE John Abraham who sprained is thumb but is listed as probable. The Jets are home for the New Orleans Saints next week. Top Performances around the league: Rich Gannon, QB, Oakland 21-28, 258 yards Byron Leftwich, QB, Jacksonville 14-18, 134 yards Drew Brees, QB, San Diego 21-34, 266 yards Rod Smith, WR, Denver 10-168 David Boston, WR, San Diego 9-125 |

Preseason Week 3
Week 3
New Orleans (0-1) at New York (1-1) The Saints came to face the New York Jets on a beautiful August evening with 75,700 attendance. Jet fans would not leave disappointed as the Jets played there best game of the preseason, winning 20-13. The Jets’ offense combined with 285 yards while the defense let up 260 yards. Pennington looked sharp, completing 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in three quarters of work, before handing the duties off to sixth round draft choice Brooks Bollinger (4-9, 33 yards, 1 TD). Conway continued his impressive preseason with the Jets catching 6 more passes and raising his total to 18 for the 3-preseason games. The O-line continued their struggles giving up 4 sacks, and allowing the backs to average only 2.5 yards per carry. The team has particularly been disappointed with their so called best lineman, Kevin Mawae who missed on all 5 key run block situations. The team is counting on Mawae to be the strength of this unit for the offense to have any success this season. Injuries to report, RT, Kareem McKenzie continues to battle knee tendonitis but is listed as probable, LG, Dave Yovonovits bruised his knee and is listed as probable, rookie FB, BJ Askew sprained his knee and is listed as questionable, DE John Abraham continues to battle his sprained thumb. News around the league: Green Bay has lost backup QB, Doug Pederson for the next 3-4 months with a high ankle sprain. Philadelphia has lost starting C, Hank Fraley for the season with torn ankle ligaments. San Francisco also lost their starting center, Jeremy Newberry for the season and perhaps his career with a compound leg fracture, he is listed as out for 42 weeks. Tampa Bay has lost the services of backup running back, Thomas Jones for the next 17 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Washington lost the services of their starting free safety, Andre Lott, for the next few months with a plantar fascitis (foot?) injury. Last edited by mmarra82 : 12-30-2003 at 07:15 PM. |

Preseason Week 4
Week 4
New York Jets (2-1) at New York Giants (1-1) The traditional preseason matchup of the New York Jets and the New York Giants took place on a cool August evening. The Giants won this one, 17-9. The Jets got on the board first with an Doug Brien field goal, that was later matched by a Giants’ Matt Bryant field goal, that is the way the first half would end. The second half started like the first, with the Jets getting a quick field goal to take a 6-3 lead, however on the ensuing kickoff Will Allen returned it 89 yards to put the Giants ahead 10-6. The Giants would add a Jesse Palmer to Jeremy Shockey touchdown later, and eventually win 17-9. The Jets gave Vinny Testaverde all the reps and he was accurate, 19-36, 216 yards, however he could not get the offense to convert third downs (2/13). The Jets are still nursing the injuries of rookie FB BJ Askew, and DE John Abraham. Both could go if need be. The Jets close out their preseason this week at Philadelphia. |

New York Jets (2-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) The New York Jets concluded the 2003 preseason with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, 25-7. The Jets could muster only 237 yards on offense, primarily with the first team. Chad Pennington was intercepted 4 times as he completed just 50% of his passes (18/36) for 176 yards. Tight End Anthony Becht had his best game of the preseason catching 6 balls for 39 yards. Sam Cowart led the defense with 10 tackles, and rookie Free Safety Derek Pagel made his first career interception. The Jets open the regular season up against Washington this Thursday night. The Jets had no further injuries to report. |

Week 1
Week 1
New York Jets at Washington Redskins Line: Redskins by 2 The weather could not have been better for this one, sunny and 67 degrees for opening day in the NFL. The Jets got on the board early with a Doug Brien, 33 yard field goal. The Jets ran the ball well, 123 yards on 29 carries, however the pass protection was pathetic to say the least, giving up 7 sacks. We knew entering the season that the O-Line was going to be the question mark, and after this start, we know it is no longer the question mark, but the concern. Pennington was ineffective, due to lack of time, completing 15 of 32 passes for 149 yards and two interceptions. Curtis Martin compiled 122 yards in total offense (63 on the ground, 59 receiving). Despite an injured hand, DE John Abraham led the defense, holding the ‘Skins to 207 yards in total offense. Abraham was the game MVP with 2 sacks, 2 hurries and 5 tackles. That despite playing with an injured hand. Rookie RG Kendrick Devine was victimized for 3 sacks, and will attempt to earn time next week from the bench as the team will go back to veteran Brent Smith this week, who is slightly better at pass protection. Grades for the week: Offense: C The team was on the verge of receiving an F, however they were able to drive the ball down the field in overtime capped by a 10 yard run by Lamont Jordan for the win. The team compiled 272 total yards on offense and was effective running the ball, however the passing game was terrible. Defense: A The “D” held Washington to 207 yards in total offense forced a turnover and got to QB Patrick Ramsey 3 times. Special Teams: B- Doug Brien was 1 for 2 on field goals, however his miss was from 51 yards. Punter Dan Stryzinski averaged 43 yards per punt and pinned the Redskins inside their own 20 on 3 occasions. The kick returns averaged 26 yards per return, and Michael Bates handled the only punt return for 9 yards. Week 2
Week 2
Miami Dolphins (1-0) at New York Jets (1-0) Line: Miami by 3 The New York Jets lost a hearbreaker to Miami 24-21. Miami took a 13-0 lead early, and that was the score at the half after two Olindo Mare field goals, and a 1 yard touchdown run by Travis Minor. The Jets defense got them back into the game, with Miami leading 13-0 late in the 3rd quarter, CB Donnie Abraham picked off Jay Fiedler and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown. That would not stop Miami who continued to move the ball against the Jets until Fiedler was intercepted once again, this time by CB Aaron Beasley who returned it 83 yards for a touchdown as well. The Jets now led 14-13, and after a Miami punt sustained their first long drive of the game capped off by a 3 yard touchdown run by Curtis Martin giving the Jets a 21-13 lead with under three minutes left. Miami took the ensuing drive the length of the field quickly and scored with 1:03 left on a 29 yard pass from Fiedler to Chris Chambers, Fiedler then connected to Ricky Williams for the 2-point conversion, and a tie score. Miami kicked off to the Jets who went 3 and out quickly. Stryzinski punted the ball, only to see Travis Minor return the ball 16 yards to the Miami 47, on the next play, Fiedler scrambled 17 yards to the Jets 36 yards line with 3 seconds left, setting up Olindo Mare for the dramatic 53 yard field goal, and a Miami win. Offense Grade: C Pennington and company still struggled for most of the game. Pennington was 19-30, 185 yards, and threw 2 interceptions. The rushing game eclipsed 100 yards once again (101 yards total) and was effective. The Jets had a huge drive which appeared to put the game away, 21-13 but was unable to run out the clock at the end and force overtime. The O-Line was better only allowing 3 sacks compared to 7 sacks last week against Washington. Defense Grade: B- The Grade would have been a C, had they not intercepted Fiedler twice and returned them back for touchdowns. The defense collapsed in the final two minutes of the game allowing a quick drive down the field for a touchdown, followed by a two point conversion, and also allowing Fiedler to scramble for 17 yards and set up the game winning field goal. Special Teams Grade: C Punter Dan Stryzinski punted 3 balls into the end zone, killing the field position strategy for the Jets. The Punt Return team was penalized at the end of the game, being forced to punt again. On the second punt, Miami return man Travis Minor returned the ball 16 yards to the Miami 47 yard line, instead of the ball being back on Miami’s 24 yard line the first time. Brien had booming kickoffs and connected on his all 3 extra points. Bates averaged 28 yards per kick return and Santan Moss’ only punt return went for 3 yards. Week 3
Week 3
New York Jets (1-1) at New England Patriots (0-2) Line: New England by 2 The New York Jets traveled to New England for an early season match up of division rivals. The Patriots are looking to get their first win of the season, and have struggled early on. The Jets have had a tough time putting points on the board, however they feel they match up well with the Patriots. The two exchanged first quarter field goals before the Jets put together a 9 play, 64 yard drive capped by a 19 yard pass from Pennington to Conway to give the Jets a 10-3 halftime lead. The Pats got an early second half field goal to pull within 4. The Jets looked to be in control when midway through the fourth quarter Pennington hit Curtis Conway once again, this time from 4 yards out, putting the Jets up 17-6. However, on the ensuing kickoff Ty Law brought it back 86 yards to make the score 17-12. New England elected to go for two, and converted when Brady hit Larry Centers in the end zone, making the score 17-14. New England would get a few more chance, never to cross midfield. The Jets held on to a 17-14 victory to go to 2-1 while New England falls to 0-3. The Jets are home for Dallas next week. Offense Grade: C+ The Jets continue to have problems with turnovers. Against New England the Jets turned the ball over 3 times. Pennington was efficient, completing 18 of 33 passes, but for only 145 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Tight End Anthony Becht has continued his steady play, catching 4 passes (15 for the season) for 30 yards. Wideout Curtis Conway was on the receiving end of Pennington’s first 2 touchdown passes for the season. Curtis Martin had his most carries for the season, as the Jets controlled the clock. Martin carried 22 times for 81 yards. Defense Grade: A- The Defense played a mistake free game. They held New England to 236 yards in total offense and only 12 first downs. John Abraham continued his strong 2003 campaign, with 5 tackles, 1 sack and a QB hurry. LB Mo Lewis had an interception, and DB’s Aaron Beasley and Ray Mickens eached forced a fumble, however the Jets did not recover either. Special Teams Grade: B- The Jets one let down was allowing Ty Law to return a kickoff for a touchdown. Punter Dan Stryzinski had a fine game, placing 4 punts deep inside New England territory. Santana Moss had a solid day of returns averaging 9.5 yards per punt return. Kick returns averaged just over 20 yards per return. The Jets could still use a second return man to go along with Bates. Kicker Doug Brien connected on his only field goal attempt from 47 yards. Week 4
Week 4
Dallas Cowboys (1-1) at New York Jets (2-1) In a game of defense the NY Jets defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 16-9. Neither team could move the ball through the air, however the two teams combined for 324 yards rushing, and only 176 yards passing. Dallas running back, Hambrick carried the ball 22 times for 108 yards, while Martin equaled the challenge finishing with 100 yards on 22 carries. Dallas turned the ball over to the Jets three times, as the Jets continue to play opportunisitic football. Perhaps the biggest play of the game came midway through the first quarter when DE Shaun Ellis blocked a Dallas punt deep in Dallas territory, however the Jets could not capitalize the Dallas mistake that resulted in a field goal and a tie score of 3-3. The Jets would capitalize on Dallas’ next mistake, a Quincy Carter interception. The Jets drove 37 yards capped off by a 6 yards scramble for the touchdown by Chad Pennington. The Jets led 13-3 at the half. Dallas would add two third quarter field goals to pull within 4, however the Jets kept the 7 point margin by adding a Doug Brien, 42 yard field goal midway through the 4th. The Jets would play keep away the remainder of the game, and seal their 3rd victory of the season. Offense Grade: C Although the running game was effective, the passing game was non-existent. Pennington was 15 of 26, for only 99 yards. The Jets had better find a way to make some plays, to continue to win this way will be a tough task. Curtis Martin was the bright spot, rushing for 100 yards on 22 carries. The O-Line continues to show signs of improvement but then give up a costly sack. They gave up 3 to the Cowboys, and now have given up more sacks, 15, then anyone in the league. Defense Grade: B Although the pass D was solid (77 yards) the run D looked weak for the first time this season giving up 165 yards to the Cowboys. They did force three turnovers, but did not get to Carter at all on the afternoon. Could you imagine the Passing output, had the Jets gotten to Carter. Special Teams: Grade: Kick coverage by the Jets was the best all season. They held Dallas to an average of 2 yards per punt return, and 17 yards per kickoff return. The Jets did not get the opportunity once again to use Moss on punt returns, as teams continue to kick away from him. The Jets managed to average 22 yards per kick return. Kicker Doug Brien connected on all three field goals, and of course the big play, the Shaun Ellis blocked punt. Week 6
Week 6
Buffalo Bills (3-2) at New York Jets (3-1) Line: Jets –4 The Jets came out and dominated the Bills as they rolled up 24 unanswered first half points, and that is all they would need as they defeated the Bills 24-0. The Jets got out midway through the first quarter when Pennington found Chrebet from 3 yards out and a 7-0 lead. The Jets would score a few minutes later when Curtis Martin punched it in from 4 yards out to got up 14-0. The Bills would then make a nice goal line stance in which the Jets had to settle for an 18 yard field goal by Doug Brien and a 17-0 lead. Curtis Martin would score his second touchdown of the game from 1 yard out with 23 seconds remaining in the half and a 24-0 lead. Buffalo made defensive adjustments at the half that slowed the Jets down, and held them to 0 points in the second half, however, the Bills offense just could not get it going and were shut out. The Jets’ D held Buffalo to 216 yards in total offense, and are beginning to make a statement to the league that this defense is good. The Jets have only given up an average of 10 points per game, and lead the league in that category. The Jets have the top defense in the league, allowing 253.8 yards per game, they are #1 against the pass and #6 against the run. Curtis Martin finished with 93 yards rushing on a season high 29 carries, and backup halfback, Lamont Jordan finished with 63 yards on 9 carries, including a 57 yard run. Pennington enjoyed his most efficient game of the season, completing 21 of 27 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown. The New York Jets travel to Houston next week to take on David Carr and Rookie standout Andre Johnson and the 1-4 Texans. Offense Grade: B+ The Jets came out flying in the first half, running and passing. Pennington completed his first 13 passes of the game, and finished 21 of 27 for 167 yards. Pennington spread the ball to 9 different receivers. The Jets finished with 186 yards rushing, led by Curtis Martin who finished with 93 yards on 29 carries. The Jets played mistake free football, not allowing a sack or tuning the ball over. Defense Grade: A The Defense played team D perfectly, allowing a mere 216 yards in total offense to the Bills. They sacked Bledsoe 2 times, and forced the Bills to bring in their backup early in the fourth quarter when the Bills’ staff became frustrated that they could not move the ball. The Jets forced two Buffalo turnovers, an interception by Marvin Jones and a Shaun Ellis fumble recovery. The Jets flexed their muscles and showed signs of being a top D. Special Teams Grade: B+ The special teams played mistake free, kicking and punt coverage was solid. And opponents are apparently trying to not allow Santana Moss to return any punts. Brien converted on his only field goal opportunity. The team has experienced some snapping problems on field goals and extra points, but it has yet to cost them. JP Machado has been handling the long snapping duties, replacing rookie Daryl Ramos who was brought in to handle the long snapping. Ramos is still on the roster, listed as inactive however. Financial Situation
The Jets have a few tough decisions to contemplate for next season.
Players in the last year of their contract: Starters RG Brent Smith RT Kareem McKenzie LDT Chester McGlockton Reserves RB Michael Bates TE Daryl Ramos FL Jonathan Carter FL Kevin Swayne C JP Machado RG Kendrick Devine LT Bart Brennan P Dan Stryzinski K Doug Brien MLB Kenyatta Wright SLB Jason Glenn WLB Khary Campbell LCB Jacoby Shepherd RCB Jamie Henderson As you can see the list is long, however our top priorties are to sign T Kareem McKenzie (looking for $19.5 million over 4 years), and Kicker Doug Brien ($2.3 over 2 years). We would like to keep McGlockton (looking for a salary of $4.2 million over 2 years. He is a starter, would be a backup behind Robertson next season), Machado ($7.7 million over 4 years. He is a reserve who fills in nice at all OL positions), Smith (OL Leader, since being inserted back into the starting lineup, the OL has played well), and most of the others should not be a problem, all are looking for similar deals to what they have. The team is currently $5.9 million under the cap for this season, and have $74 million used for next season. The catch is that the team has Pennington, Becht, Ellis and Abraham's contract up the following season and they are all looking for significant raises. So, the question becomes who do we extend offers to this season in order to have enough left to sign for next season? I feel I have to do what I can to sign McKenzie because our line is weak and has little depth to start. Brien is looking for similar money to all the veteran kickers out their, so it makes sense to give him what he is asking for. As for planning to have the resources to sign players in 2004. Some thought looks as though I will only be able to sign 2 of the 4 big ones in 2004. I would like to keep Pennington, and in order to replace him I feel I would have to pay more. Abraham and Ellis are looking for simialar money, so a decision will probably have to be made as to which one to keep. Right now I am leaning towards Abraham. He has higher ratings, and appears to be playing at the level he is rated. Becht could be the one I lose out on, Becht is rated as a top-5 Tight End, who has excellent hands and blocking abilities, however, he does not posses the ability to make the big plays, and stretch the field. Something the a Tony Gonzalez, Shannon Sharpe, Todd Heape, Jeremy Shockey have the ability to do. Players that could become casulties of the cap are Testaverde, Chrebet, Mo Lewis, Donnie Abraham, and Sam Garnes. If all were released this could free up approximately $13.5 million for the 2004 season. My house rules I follow are that I can only renegotiate with players in the last year of their contract, because it seems that the game only does that (correct me if I am wrong). I plan on beginning to negotiate with Brien and McKenzie shortly. I will probably wait until our season ends to talk with Machado. |

Week 7
Week 7
New York Jets (4-1) at Houston Texans (1-4) Line: Jets –11 The New York Jets continued their winning ways defeating the Texans 19-10 and moving to 5-1. The Jets offense managed only 13 first downs and 258 yards of offense, however it would be enough because of another solid performance by the defense, holding Houston to 284 yards in total offense and causing 5 turnovers, one interception returned 72 yards for a touchdown by rookie safety, Derek Pagel. Defensive Ends, Shaun Ellis and John Abraham were in quarterback David Carr’s face all game, combining for 5 sacks and 4 hurries. It was the best performance by the D-Line this season. The Jets lone offensive touchdown was a 5 yard pass from Chad Pennington to Anthony Becht. Offense Grade: C- The Jets continue to play too conservative on the offensive side of the ball. This win if we make no mistakes will cost them down the road. The offense only managed 258 yards (103 rushing, 155 passing). Pennington was sacked 4 times and did throw 1 interception. Center Kevin Mawae struggled allowing 2 sacks. Tackle Kareem McKenzie had key run blocks 2 times in 7 opportunities. Defense Grade: A The Defense intercepted David Carr 3 times, returning 1 for a touchdown and forced 2 fumbles. The D-Line rotation of Ellis, Abraham, McGlockton, Ferguson, Robertson and Harper played the run solid and applied a lot of pressure forcing bad passes all game long. Mo Lewis led the team with 10 tackles. Special Teams Grade: A- Kicker Doug Brien converted on his 2 field goal attempts and continues to be the consistency the Jets have been looking for. Punter Dan Stryzinski pinned Houston inside the 20 on 3 different occasions. A Jets opponent finally gave Santana Moss the opportunity to returns some punts, and Moss did a fine job, averaging 12 yards per return. Kick and punt coverage was good. Week 8
New York Jets (5-1) at Philadelphia Eagles (5-1) Line Eagles –2 The Jets defeated the Eagles in Philadelphia by a score of 21-9. The Jets continued their winning ways by creating zero turnovers and a huge special teams play. The Jets were the first team to put points on the board when Pennington found tight end Anthony Becht in the end zone from 10 yards out. The touchdown was the result of an 11 play, 68 yard drive. On the Jets ensuing drive the team would drive 59 yards on 6 plays capped by Curtis Martin’s 2 yard run. The big play occurred before the offense took the field when Santana Moss returned a punt 16 yards to give the Jets the ball at their own 41. The defense would make a big goal line stance late in the second quarter and hold Philly to a David Ackers’ 20 yard field goal to cut the Jets lead to 14-3. However, on the ensuing kickoff the Jets special teams would strike again. This time return man Michael Bates took the kickoff 102 yards and gave the Jets a 21-3 halftime lead over the first place Eagles. The second half the Eagles would slow the Jets down and hold them to no points. But the Jets would only allow the Eagles to get two third quarter field goals by David Ackers from 54 and 50 yards. The Jets would hold for a 21-9 victory. The only injury was RG Brent Smith who sprained his ankle and is listed as probable. The Jets are home next week for the 3-3 New York Giants. Grades Offense: B The Jets offense came out and controlled the tempo early. The addition of WR Dez White paid dividends early as he caught passes of 17 yards on the first touchdowns drive and 14 yards on the second touchdown drive. Chad Pennington was more aggressive in the first half including a long pass to Chrebet for 33 yards. Pennington finished the game 16 of 29, 209 yards and 1 touchdown. The Jets running game was held in check as Martin and Jordan combined for 30 carries and 80 yards. Santana Moss led Jet receivers with 4 catches for 59 yards. Defense: B The defense gave up chunks of yardage, 383 in all. But, held Philadelphia to just 9 points. McNabb threw for 308 yards but a costly interception to safety Sam Garnes killed a 3rd quarter drive for Philadelphia. Mo Lewis led Jet tacklers with 12. The Jets used various blitzes that resulted in cornerbacks Donnie Abraham and Jacoby Shepherd recording a sack each. Rookie Dwayne Robertson had a fine game, 0.5 sacks and 4 hurries were credited towards him. Special Teams: A Kickoff Returner Michael Bates 102 yard return gave the Jets the 21-3 lead and in position to win over Philly. Santan Moss had a nice return to give his team good field position to begin their second scoring drive. Dan Stryzinski had 9 punts on the day, 3 inside the 20, and more importantly none were returned as the Jets won the field position game. Kicker Doug Brien missed just his second field goal of the season from 45 yards out. Week 9
New York Giants (3-4) at New York Jets (6-1) Line: Jets –7 The Giants came into this game needing a win to stay in contention for the playoffs and get over .500 for the first time this season, however they came up short. The Giants let this one slip away as the Jets defeated them 17-13. The Jets are now 7-1 this season and are in first place in the AFC East over New England who is 5-4. The Jets scored early in the second quarter on an interception returned for a touchdown by linebacker, Sam Cowart. The Giants answered back with two Matt Bryant field goals to cut the score to 7-6. Doug Brien would add a late second quarter field goal to give the Jets a halftime lead, 10-6. The score would remain 10-6 until late in the fourth quarter, the Giants drove the length of the field and Kerry Collins found reserve tight end, Willie Ponder to give the Giants a 13-10 lead. However, the Jets would not be denied. Needing only a field goal, Pennington began to drive the Jets into Giants territory, nearing field goal range, Giants DE Michael Strahan made back to back sacks and knocked the Jets out of field goal range, and set up the play of the season for the Jets. On 3rd and 28 with 14 seconds left the Jets chose not to complete a long pass for a field goal and the tie but Pennington went for it all and connected with Santana Moss from 55 yards out and the win, 17-13. Grades Offense: C Once again the Jets were held to under 300 total yards in offense, and if it were not for the big play to Moss to end the game, the O was looking at a big fat “F.” The running game averaged 5.4 yards per carry, but had few carries. Pennington was under pressure all game, and when he did have time, he missed open receivers or they dropped the reception. Pennington finished the game 12 for 30, 167 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. The O-Line gave up 4 sacks and allowed Strahan and Holmes to pressure their QB all game long. The 55 yard pass play to Moss was the team’s longest pass play of the season. Defense: B- Kerry Collins and the Big Blue Offense carved the Jets up for 378 yards in total offense. However, the Jets only allowed the Giants into the end zone once, and show why they lead the league in fewest points allowed (10.2 average). The defense scored on Sam Cowart’s interception, and continued to make the big plays at key times in the ball game. Defensive ends, Abraham and Ellis applied pressure throughout the game. The two had 2 sacks, 3 hurries and a pass block. Mo Lewis was once again the teams leading tackler with 10. Special Teams: B Santana Moss averaged 16.7 yards per punt return on 4 chances, setting up good field position for the offense. Kicker Doug Brien connected from 21 yards out, but did miss from 47. Punter Dan Stryzinski placed 5 of his 6 punts inside the 20, helping the Jets win the battle of field position. Week 10
Week 10
New York Jets (8-1) at Oakland Raiders (4-4) Line: New York Jets –8 The New York Jets went into Oakland to battle the team that has knocked them out of the playoffs the past two seasons. Oakland has been struggling, losing the past two weeks to Kansas City and Detroit. The first quarter would end with the score 0-0. Sebastian Janikowski opened the scoring up early in the second quarter with a 26-yard field goal. The Jets would take the ensuing kickoff and begin a 12-play, 72 yard drive that took up 6:30. The drive would end with a 1 yard touchdown throw from Pennington to Wayne Chrebet, his first touchdown of the season. Oakland would begin to drive the field, however it would end when Gannon’s pass was intercepted by safety, Derrik Pagel, his fourth of the season. Pennington would quickly take advantage of the opportunity and drive the team 45 yards, in 1:21 to set up a Doug Brien 52 yard field goal to end the half at 10-3. The Jets would begin where they left off in the third quarter. After a penalty on the opening kickoff return, the Jets took possession at their own 9 yard line. Pennington would lead a 14 play, 91 yard drive that ended when he found Curtis Conway from 5 yards out, and a 17-3 lead. Oakland would answer back on the next drive when Gannon found Tim Brown from 2 yards out to cut the Jets’ lead to 17-10. On the ensuing drive, Pennington would make a mistake and pay, Charles Woodson intercepted Pennington and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown, tying the score at 17. The two teams would play at a stand still setting up another dramatic finish. The Jets would get the ball with 1:53 remaining at their own 20. They would drive 64 yards to set up the game winning field goal for Doug Brien from 33 yards out, and improving the Jets to 8-1. Offense Grade: B+ The Offense moved the ball the best they have all season. They totaled 379 yards in offense, allowing zero sacks and Pennington throwing for a season high, 278 yards. The Jets did turn the ball over 3 times, but did make key drives at the end of the first half, and the game winner as time expired. Curtis Conway had his best game as a Jet, 6 receptions, 91 yards, and a touchdown. Curtis Martin had a season low 46 yards, but on only 10 carries. The O-Line played solid, as well as reserve receiver Wayne Chrebet who had a season high 5 catches. Newly acquired receiver, Dez White had a key 15 yard reception late in the final drive. Defense Grade: B The Defense gave up 326 yards to the Raiders, who offense has sputtered as of late. The Defense forced 2 turnovers, including intercepting Gannon in their endzone, late in the second quarter. The Jets’ D got pressure on Gannon sacking him three times, three hurries and blocking a pass. John Abraham continued his excellent season, sacking Gannon once and credited with two hurries. Abraham is currently second in the league with 8.5 sacks, Strahan leads with 10. Mo Lewis led the team with 9 tackles. Special Teams Grade: B- Kicker Doug Brien connected on his two field goal opportunities, including a 52-yarder as time expired in the first half, and a 33-yarder at the end of regulation. Santana Moss had two returns for 28 yards, but kick returners only averaged 17 yards per return. The Special Teams was responsible for 2 out of the team’s 3 penalties during the game. Week 10 Salary Renegotiations
The process of extending right tackle, 24 year old, Kareem McKenzie's salary is moving along, slowly. McKenzie's agent, Jermaine Wiggins originally began the process by asking for $19,500,000 over 4 years, including a $4.92 million dollar signing bonus. The team is looking for a longer term deal, 5 years. New York's latest offer was at $22.7 million over 5 years. McKenzie's agent is looking for the Jets to slightly up the signing bonus to sign. Currently the Jets are offering a $4.5 million dollar signing bonus. Renegotiations will continue at a later date. If signed that would put McKenzie at only 29 when the contract is up.
Kareem McKenzie was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2001 draft out of Penn State. As a rookie he was second on the depth chart behind Ryan Young. Young was left exposed in the expansion draft, and taken by Houston, paving the way for McKenzie to become the starting Right Tackle. McKenzie struggled at times last season, as well as this season. He is currently rated at 52 with a potential of 79. He has allowed 4 sacks through 9 games this season, and has made 12 key run blocks on 35 opportunities. |

Week 11
Week 11
New York Jets (8-1) at Indianapolis Colts (8-1) Line: Colts –2 The Jets came into Indianapolis looking to knock off the red-hot Colts who have won 4 straight in dominating fashion. Indy would be the first to score early in the second quarter when Peyton Manning found tight end, Marcus Pollard from 4 yards out and the 7-0 lead. The Jets would get on the board late in the first half with a Doug Brien field goal, cutting the lead to 7-3. The Jets offense was moving the ball very effectively, however, three first half turnovers would be the mistakes that would not allow the Jets to pull this one out. The Jets D continued to play strong, and deny the Colts time after time. The Jets would score another field goal, this one from 28 yards out to cut the Colts lead to one point. As effective as the Jets’ offense was, the Colts defense continues to make the big plays, causing turnovers or forcing the Jets to settle for short field goals. Early in the fourth quarter the Colts’ kicker, Mike Vanderjagt got his own field goal, this one from 34 yards out, extending the Colts’ lead to 10-6. Late in the fourth quarter the Jets D caused the break they needed, intercepting Peyton Manning and taking over on the Colts 42. The offense moved the ball, but on 4th and 2, Jets coach, Jonathan Deutsch elected to settle for a field goal as opposed to going for it, making the score 10-9. Indy answered back with a drive that ate up a lot of the remaining clock and scored with 2:06 remaining. This appeared to be the back breaker, a 5 yard James Mungro run and a 16-9 lead. Vanderjagt would give the Jets life when he missed the extra point. The Jets and Pennington would not have any magic today, as the Colts D held and the Jets were handed only their second lost of the season. Offense Grade: C The offense move the ball well all day, 377 yards, held the ball for nearly 37 minutes, however 3 costly turnovers and not being able to score any touchdowns, resulted in a loss. Curtis Martin had a huge game, 27 carries for 109 yards, and caught 9 passes for 87 yards. Pennington completed 26 of 47 passes for 245 yards and 1 interception. Dez White continued to make big catches for the Jets, 4 catches for 42 yards. The line did a decent job, 2 sacks allowed, but the running game averaged 4.1 yards per carry. Nice number all around, but no touchdowns and three turnovers. Defense Grade: B+ The defense did a wonderful job holding the Colts to a mere 272 yards in total offense. Peyton Manning completed 15 of 20 passes for 187 yards. The Colts were without Edgerrin James, which helped the Jets against the run. Rhodes and Mungro did an admirable job, 19 carries and 86 yards. Defensive Tackle, Harper was in for only 4 pass plays, but recorded 2 sacks. The Jets got 1 sack as well from Sam Cowart and Bryan Thomas. John Abraham was held in check, only 1 pass block. Marvin Jones led the team with 9 tackles. Special Teams Grade: B When I look at Special Teams, I look to see that they give me the best field position possible. Coverage by the special teams was excellent once again. However, the Jets only had one kick return, by Lamont Jordan for 22 yards that brought the ball out to only the 19. The Colts kept the ball away from Santana Moss all game, you would think that the Jets got good field position, however the Colts punter, Hunter Smith averaged 37.0 yards, all net yards with no return yardage. Doug Brien continued his solid season hitting on all 3 field goal attempts. Dan Stryzinski had two punts, one being only a 33 yarder setting the Colts up with good field position. Week 12
Jacksonville Jaguars (6-4) at New York Jets (8-2) Line: Jets –4 The Jets come home looking to bounce back from their loss at Indianapolis, snapping a 7-game winning streak. The Jags got off to a strong start, 5-2, led by rookie quarterback Byron Leftwich and a defense that has forced 22 turnovers. However, the Jags have dropped 2 of their last 3 and were coming into New York tying to stay in the race for the wild-card. The two teams played a scoreless first quarter, however in the second quarter Pennington got the team started, leading the team on an 8 play, 72 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to Wayne Chrebet. Jacksonville would tag on a late first half field goal to make the score 7-3. In the second half the accuaracy of Pennington and the running game of Curtis Martin and Lamont Jordan saw the Jets score 14 more points to lead 21-3. Pennington continued his strong play, completing 19 of his 27 passes for nearly 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns, one to Chrebet and the other to Santana Moss. Moss played his best game of the season, catching 6 passes for 95 yards. The team has shown some concern over Moss who has not shown the production that they hoped he would. A lot of that can be contributed to the double coverage he faces because of the lack of a second wide out. The defense pounded the rookie QB who was unable to move the ball all game long. Jacksonville got a late fourth quarter touchdown and 2-point conversion when backup quarterback Mark Brunell came into the game. The Jets improved to 9-2 on the season, and took a 3 game lead over New England. Grades Offense: A The offense controlled the ball for over thirty six minutes, did not turn the ball over and was effective through the air and on the ground. The Jets rushed for 145 yards on 40 carries. Curtis Martin had 90 yards on 22 carries, and backup Lamont Jordan contributed with 53 yards on 15 carries. The O-Line controlled the line of scrimmage through out the game, making holes and protecting Pennington. Jacksonville did get to Pennington once during the game. Santana Moss enjoyed his finest game of the season with 6 receptions for 95 yards. The Jets will need a lot more of these offensive performances for the team to succeed this season in the playoffs. Defense: A The defense gave up 304 yards, however, 97 of those yards came in the final two minutes of play when reserve quarterback, Mark Brunell led the team on a long touchdown drive to close out the game. The Jets run D did what they had to do, against a team who has struggled on the ground all season, they stopped them. They held the Jacksonville running game to 39 yards on 17 carries. The Jets wanted to go after the rookie quarterback, and that is what they did. They sacked Leftwich 3 times, knocked him down 5 more times and blocked a pass of his. Coach Deutsch continues to make the right calls on personel moves during the game. Reserve linebacker Victor Hobson had a big sack early, ending a Jacksonville drive that resulted in a punt. Reserve Defensive End, Bryan Thomas made the most of his plays, forcing Leftwich to rush a pass that was incomplete. The rotation on the Defense has kept guys fresh at the end of games and for the season. Special Teams: B- Kicker Doug Brien missed his only field goal of the afternoon from 36 yards outs. Punter Dan Stryzinski had a solid game placing 3 of his 6 punts inside the 20. Moss had a nice 11 yard return on a punt, however the return game still struggles at times, as the Jets averaged only 13 yards on kickoff returns. Kick coverage was good during the day as Jacksonville was held to 14 yards on 4 kickoff returns. Jets Sign McKenzie
After a few weeks of negotiating the Jets have signed RT Kareem McKenzie. McKenzie signed a 4 year $18,840,000 contract with the Jets. The signing prevents McKenzie from becoming a free agent at the end of the season.
The Jets will look to add two new guards next season, and sure up their offensive line. If they had to find a right tackle it could have been a major hit to the cap to replace a player like McKenzie. The Jets will look to continue negotiations with kicker, Doug Brien this week. |

Week 13
Week 13
Tennessee Titans (5-6) at New York Jets (9-2) Line: New York Jets –7 The Titans came to New York on Monday Night trying to keep their playoff hopes alive. In an up and down season the Titans need a victory over the favorite Jets who sit atop the AFC East at 9-2. The Jets have struggled as of late, making mistakes that were not seen when this team storm out to 8-1. Coach Deutsch knows the Jets can ill afford to play another lackluster game against Tennessee. The Jets scored on their second possession of the game when Curtis Martin punched it in from 2 yards out, midway through the first quarter. Tennessee’s offense struggled, as the Jets held them to 3 straight 3 and outs. Tennessee would answer in the second quarter when McNair found his favorite target, Frank Wycheck from 7 yards out to tie the score. The Jets would hit the big play they needed when Santana Moss broke free from 63 yards out on a beautifully timed ball by Pennington and a 14-7 lead. But mistakes would doom the Jets in the second half as a costly penalty wiped out a 43 yard pass to Moss and on the next play another penalty wiped out a 24 yard play to Moss resulting in the drive ending with a punt. Tennessee would put together two timely drives resulting in a 3 yard touchdown pass to Derrick Mason and a 18 yard field goal by Gary Anderson to take the lead 17-14. The Jets would have no answer as they went 4 plays and out on 4 straight incompletions and their third defeat of the season. The Jets now have to travel to Buffalo and face the 7-5 Bills, winners of 3 straight. Grades Offense: D The Jets managed only 14 points and had two huge penalties late in the game that killed a drive that would have given the Jets a field goal opportunity at the least. The running game compiled 112 yards on 32 carries, despite Curtis Martin going down with an injury in the third quarter. Pennington was sacked 4 times, and completed just 17 of 37 passes, 245 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Santana Moss finished with 4 catches for 111 yards, and could have easily torched the Titans for more, if not for the penalties. Defense: C- When you give up 17 points you should win the game. However, the defense did not make enough plays down the stretch to claim a victory. The Titans racked up 397 yards in total offense. McNair was 17 of 25, for 259 yards. Eddie George had a solid game on the ground, 23 carries for 79 yards. The Jets allowed Tennessee to sustain two long second half drives that resulted in 10 points. Sam Cowart enjoyed his finest game of the season, recording 13 tackles, and John Abraham finished with 1.5 sacks, 1 pass block and 3 hurries. Special Teams: B Punter Dan Stryzinski had a booming 61 yard punt early in the game, and placed 4 of his 7 punts inside the Titans’ 20. Moss had 2 returns for an 11 yard average, and Jordan contributed with 2 kick returns for a 17 yard average. Coverage did a relatively solid job.
