TCY: Maryland Dynasty - 2004
See the misery that was Year 1!
Maryland 2003 In the mailbox... A lot of players lost their relationships this past year. Good Lord! You come to college to PLAY, not develop long-standing healthy relationships! Also, Alex Ronk, the defensive coordinator I wanted to build a long career with has left town. Bite me, Alex! Staff Changes I hire Ernie Dees as my new Syndicate Coordinator. He's 57, is Terrific at academic eligibility and good at soliticing donations. Make me proud, Ernie! I also hire Dominic Andrews as my new offensive coordinator. He's 36, and pretty good across the board. I'm sticking my neck out for this guy - I'll be mad if he leaves after a year. At defensive coordinator, I hire 34 year old Carlton Gill. He doesn't look as promising as Andrews, but I believe he'll do well here. On the scouting front, I add 31 year old Marc Cerny as my MidAtlantic scout. 2004 Roster - Offense
Now, let's look at that team....surely this 11-game losing streak will be broken soon with these world-class athletes!
Quarterbacks Code:
Ok...Floyd Price was the starter last year, and is our best quarterback this year, so he'll keep the starting job. Richmond was our backup this year, but we'll move Dan Bush into that role. Joseph Morton will redshirt. He looks to be a monster in the future. Runningbacks Code:
T.J. got the nod last year, but TWO touted freshman come in already surpass T.J.'s talent. Jamal Bracken looks to be an elusive, breakaway runner who really holds onto the ball. Jake Kemp, the #4 prospect in the nation, is much like Jamal, except he can be expected to get the short yardage. Unlike Jamal, he doesn't seem to have the stamina to carry the ball 30+. Since I have both these guys, I don't foresee that to be a problem. I'd love to redshirt these guys, but I'm not sure I'll have the opportunity to. Fullbacks Code:
Lester Craig, who I started last year (5 carries, 18 yards), and walk-on Brock Sellers. I will need to recruit a FB this year. Tightends Code:
Drew started last year and caught 7 passes for 120 yards. He also had 10 pancake blocks in 23 opportunities. He'll start again this year, but share playing time with freshman recruit Dominic Bailey. Bailey is a rarity, as he can both block and catch the ball...just not now - he's too raw. Wide Receivers Code:
Wow, I ignored this position on the recruiting trail. I'm going to have to concentrate on on WRs this time. Joseph Morton will need guys to throw to. Right now, it's thin and embarassing. Offensive Line Code:
Larry Bishop will start again this year. He didn't do great...and he improved only a little - but he's still one of the best we have. At guard, we'll start Pinkerton and Springer. Daryl Kirtsey was not highly recruited by other programs, but he has the potential to be incredible. To help him with this, I'm gonna redshirt him and take my lumps. At tackle, we have returning starter Alex Carlisle, and it looks like we'll need incoming freshman J.B. Messenger to start. |

2004 Maryland Terrapins - Defense
Let's take a look at the defensive side of the ball...
Defensive Ends Code:
Hmmm...just like last year, there's not much here. I brought in a couple guys, but only one looks to add any real value. I'll redshirt Grady Monroe to see if I can maximize his potential. Defensive Tackles Code:
Hmm...I brought in Kevorkian to help out, but he doesn't look much different than the existing corps. However, with a name like Kevorkian, you HAVE to strike fear in the hearts of your opponents! Linebackers Code:
I will continue to start Adrian Berberich, but I have to go with my stud, Cris Matthews, instead of a disappointing Rondell Sinclair. He's the present and future, and I look forward to seeing him play. Both Perry Clouse and Bryant Phillips will be redshirted. Secondary Code:
Uh oh, forgot to recruit this position as well. Darryl Bournigal will start, as well as good ol' Pumpkinhead. Wahoo! |

Week 2 - New Mexico State
New Mexico State comes into town, while we ride an 11-game losing streak.
New Mexico State (0-0) at Maryland (0-0) (-6) OMG, we're favored! And the new Maryland offense comes alive! Code:
We had 423 yards total offense, which for us is incredible. T.J. Fitzgerald gained 105 yards on 13 carries and 2 TDs. Floyd Price was 24-29 for 266 yards, 3 TDs and 1 Int. Are we a juggernaut, or what?! Our freshman stud, Cris Matthews had 13 tackles and 5 assists at an ILB spot. Overall, I'm very pleased the way we came out. We're ready to play in 2004! |

Week 3 - Syracuse
Injuries
Drew Bonk, TE. Probable, shoulder tendonitis #40 Syracuse (1-0) at Maryland (1-0) (-2) on TV5 Syracuse beat a horrible Akron team last week, so despite their #40 ranking, I'm not altogether convinced they're that good. Since that's the case, even if we do double our win output of 2003 with a victory here, I'm not altogether sure that will shoe definite signs of improvement. Then again, I'll take any victory I can get. Code:

Injuries

True freshman Cris Matthews leads Maryland with 28 tackles and 4 tackles for loss. West Virginia enters the game averaging 39.5 points per game. True freshman Ian Starr, TE, leads West Virginia in receptions (8) and yards (133). West Virginia's Dusty Hopkins has thrown 29 interceptions in 14 career starts. Senior Butch Herrod, DT, has 3 sacks in 2 games (5.5 sacks as a junior). Code:
This game was tied, 10-10 until the 4th quarter, when a couple of interceptions and a turnover on downs cost us big time. Again, we turned the ball over (2 times) and failed to cause our opponent to return the favor. Our rushing attack was miserable: Code:

We're pretty much guaranteed losses to the big 3 of the ACC (UNC, Duke, Clemson) and last year we were outscored 132-16 by these guys. This will be a barometer for how far we've come, but I have a feeling it's going to show we haven't come far at all ![]() ![]() And....here we go! Code:

Week 6 - at Clemson
Recruiting
We're getting our first round of decisions in from this year's recruits. Can we continue to land a better echelon of player like we did last year? Commits None Committed Elsewhere Nick Peterson, QB, Virginia Tech Sam Linquist, WR, Kentucky Lester Meier, DE, Clemson Hmm....not a good first week ![]() Injuries Drew Bonk, TE, probably, shoulder tendonitis Freddie Ferguson, DE, out, broken foot Maryland (1-3) at #3 Clemson (3-0) (-30) Clemson leads the series, 1-0 Last Meeting: 2003, Clemson won, 38-7 Notes: We've hit the downward spiral of our schedule, as we've been outscored 135-31 in our last three games. Cris Matthews continues to shine defensively for Maryland, posting 50 tackles and 15 assists in his first 4 collegiate games. Clemson's defense was incredible last year, and so far looks better this year as they've given up only 265 total yards in their first 3 games. Unreal. Clemson is led by All-American defensive end Chuck Poor who had 27 sacks last year, and 3 this year. He's been bothered by a pulled groin so far this year, but it should be fully healed after this game. Look out, ACC! On to the blasphemy... Code:
Before a sellout crowd of over 80000 people, Clemson quickly put away Maryland and then gracefully coasted the rest of the way. One thing I have to say, they're much better than us, but they've been a class act (unlike the N.C. State game last year). We were able to gain 164 total yards in offense and held them to 333. They ran the ball 49 times and passed only 8 times. Again, turnovers killed us (we had 5, they had 1). Other ACC Action N.C. These are the same guys who ran up the score against me last year, and beat me 73-7. We may not have the personnel to give them payback this year...but one day...we will, and show no mercy. A telling sign for our team - through 5 games we've turned the ball over 17 times and only forced 4 turnovers. Yuck. N.C. State leads the country in passing, averaging over 450 yards per game as well as 39.6 points. They're 4-1 on the year, and according to the rankings, we will be their worst opponent thus far ![]() #40 North Carolina State (4-1) (-17) at Maryland (1-4) N.C.
