TCY 1.2a (new AI update) - Maryland Dynasty
By far my favorite reads in this forum are the TCY dynasties. For some reason, I just love reading about players building their team from nothing and then eventually winning a national title. Some of my faves to read thus far are the continuing Indiana VC and cthomer's Rutgers dynasties (I wish he'd continue that one).
Anyway...I decided to start my own, but with a few changes that will hopefully keep my interest (I had a couple of ill-fated dynasties before -- Wyoming and Air Force). So...what am I doing differently this time? I've decided to go with Maryland. I'm a huge Maryland fan, as I was born there and my father went there. I never ran a Maryland dynasty before, however, because of the current state of the RL program. Ralph Friedgen has proven to be an incredible coach. A good thing for a real life Maryland fan, but a bad thing for a person who wants to start at the depths of college football obscurity in TCY . In order to get around this, I will be using random team reputations and continually start a new game until Maryland is sufficiently "bad". Not awful, but not on par with where they are usually. 2nd, I've decided to go with a playoff system. Normally, I'm a big proponent of playoffs for college football, but I've had a problem with the skewed statistics when I've done this before with TCY. I'm kind of a purist when it comes to statistics and keeping the game "holy" - I HATE college's overtime. However, I think this will be fun, especially if we have a huge conference rival. We can meet them in season, as well as the playoffs. Also, when using a playoff system, you don't have to rely on breaking into the BCS bowls - which can be difficult because of Solecismic's polling. As far as options in the game, I'm keeping the conference reps the same, but using random academic reputations (and random team reps as stated earlier). I'm using the "Second String" level. I found that when I was running some of my old dynasties, it was too difficult recruiting (not knowing ANYTHING about my recruit until I visit was too much of a handicap). I think in RL you would at least have a general idea about a recruit before you make a visit or call him on the phone. I am including suspensions, and hiring/firing is on, though I will wish to remain at Maryland indefinitely. Solecismic-8 will be in Alaska, and I've replaced the school names there with Ivy League schools. So, hopefully they'll have issues with recruiting nationwide and therefore NEVER become a power. Recruiting house rules are one visit/phone call per week, and a scholarship can only be offered a week after phoning/visiting. Also...I'll try to go as in-depth as I can with this dynasty. For me, it's been kind of a double-edged sword making a dynasty as granular as possible. On the one hand, it can sometimes become tedious. However, it also helps you with the immersion factor, so I plan to "dive-in" accordingly. Because of that, I'm hoping to design a few templates with Microsoft Word, so I can easily dispense some of the info. This piece will be a work-in-progress. |

Meeting the Staff...
Unfortunately, since I'm a 35 year major college coach with absolutely no major college experience, I've been told that I have no say in the make-up of my staff. Had our first staff meeting today, and here's who they are:
Syndicate Coordinator Bruce Kyle - This guy has to go. As I plan to be on the up-and-up with this program, the only thing I value is donations and help on the academic side. Unfortunately, Bruce can't do either. He'll be gone at the end of the season. Offensive Coordinator Bryan Vance. Age 67. Specializes in the Double-Wing formation and has been running it for 5 years. Unfortunately for him, I plan to use a more balanced offense at Maryland. He's congenial and an excellent playcaller, two things I look for. On the bad side, he can't develop quarterbacks or offensive lineman. I'll see how he does when I switch the offense. He's likely to retire soon. Defensive Coordinator Alex Ronk. Age 39. A youngster and excellent playcaller. He's great at developing talent at each position so I hope to be able to keep him at Maryland as part of my up-and-coming staff. Only problem is, he sometimes tells off-color jokes at the most inopportune times and therefore can sometimes hurt recruiting. We shall see, but I'm desperate to find someone I can work with for years to come. MidAtlantic Scout I plan to do most of my recruiting in and around the MidAtlantic area - at least until we become good enough to look nationwide. Currently, we have 48 year old Butch Hobbs in the position. He's not very good, and I can only rely on him for guidance with running backs, defensive lineman and the secondary. He's another guy I most certainly will have to upgrade following my first year. |

Checking Out the 2003 Schedule
Code:
Checking the schedule, I don't face a tough team until week 6, when we face national powerhouse Clemson at home. This is just the beginning of a tough 4 week schedule that includes Duke, Georgia Tech and then finally North Carolina. We finish our schedule at Wake Forest. I really think Clemson and UNC will be blowouts, despite playing them at home. I look for a 2-4 win type of year and an 8th place finish in the ACC. FWIW, Clemson and UNC being in the Top 20 reminds me of the early 80's when both those schools were very, very tough. |

Your 2003 Maryland Terrapins - Offense
Typical of a "Top 90" team , there's not much talent...
Quarterbacks Code:
Floyd Price is a senior with 2 years of eligibility left. He'll be the default starter, as we're talent-poor at this position. Fortunately, he can scramble as our offensive line isn't very good either. Geoff Everson has the most talent for the future, but that isn't saying much in this bunch. I'll need to definitely recruit a solid quarterback. Running Backs Code:
T.J. Fitzgerald will start, but Norm Potter will get a lot of carries because T.J. apparently has asthma or something. He just has no endurance...which is a shame because he has the best rushing talent on the team. At fullback, both seniors are nothing to write home about, so the future is now. Lester Craig, welcome to ACC football. Wide Receivers Code:
A very lackluster crowd here. My scout rates them all prett pitifully, but there are some interesting characters here. Brandon Garvin has some nice green bars, but this is his last year here . Henry Spencer, another senior has pretty awful ratings except for a MAXED over the middle rating. It should be interesting to see how that plays out during the season. George Hume looks like he could turn into an average WR - if all the planets align. D.J. Moss looks to be a future return specialist who will excel at fumbling. Tight Ends Code:
Drew Bonk is the best all-around tight end we have, while Arnie Holliman is not a very good blocker, but looks to be a good possession receiver. We'll try both of them out to see how they do. The sophomore and freshman are of the belief they have talent - I'll have to break the bad news to them later. Offensive Line Code:
At center, we're going to start Larry Bishop. He's going to have difficulty, be he is definitely our future at the position as actually has a chance to be a good one. At guard, no one excites me, so we'll probably rotate all 4 and let injuries decide who will start. At tackle, Gino Spillman has a chance at being 2nd team all-ACC. Beyond him, it's depressing. Note to self: deliver solid recruits on the offensive side. |

2003 Terrapins Defense
Defensive Line
Code:
Ugh - at defensive end I have NOTHING. We will definitely have to recruit a stud here. The best thing this crop has going for them is endurance. Endurance doesn't win games. At tackle I have serviceable Monty Burton and a couple other guys who may one day be not so horrible. Linebackers Code:
On the inside, Roosevelt Porter is decent and will get the starting nod. There are a couple others who may, with growth become average linebackers. On the outside, I have a couple seniors that stink, so I'm going to go with Adrian Berberich and Rondell Sinclair. They're not good now, but both have some upside. Secondary Code:
At cornerback, we have Jesse Thibodeau who should be decent. The rest are nothing to write home about. Pumpkinhead Hulsey was going to be cut, but the kid constantly gets picked on so I'm gonna keep him. At 5' 9", 160lbs...he has a hard time defending himself in practice. At safety, Ricky Lashley excels in endurance (I'm sure the ladies love that) but will provide little help elsewhere. This team is pretty miserable. I'm sure I'm going to be moving guys all around. Unfortunately, I'm not even at the point where I can specify what positions I need to fill on the recruiting trail. We really need everything. Before the first practice, I announce we'll be using an I-formation offense, and a 4-3 defense. It was really a toss-up on the defensive side, as I don't think our personnel really justifies either defense. I feel more comfortable with a 4-3, so we'll go there in 2003. |

Week 1 - At Northern Illinois
Before we play our first game, I hit the recruiting trail.
I check out the locals and notice we have a couple guys (TE and C) who idolize us . Both turn out to be bad players, so we're going to ignore them for now. In the recruiting area, I'll only list people that we extend a scholarship offer to. Since this is unavailable to me this week, I'll go right to the game. Maryland at Northern Illinois (-9) on TV4 (ha!) I'll do game logs for interesting games, otherwise I'll just provide relevant statistical information. The Craig Scarborough era at Maryland begins. Code:
It wasn't pretty, but our offense dominated on the run, and held Northern Illinois to only 22 mins with the ball and 166 total yards. Code:
T.J Fitzgerald rocked, and Price didn't make a fool of himself. If we can continue this ball control offense, we may not embarass ourselves this year. Week 2 - at Florida State
Recruiting
Fresh off our upset win over N. Illinois, I hit the recruiting trail and extend offers to anyone and everyone. C'mon down to Maryland, boys! Injuries None #44 Maryland at Florida State (-2) Somehow we enter this game the number 44 team in the nation. It won't last. Code:
Well...I told you before I don't like college's overtime. It took a 13-13 defensive battle and made it look like semi-offensive game. In overtime, an illegal use of the hands penalty, along with 2 dropped passes killed us. We lose, 27-20. We still dominate by running the ball: Code:
But it wasn't enough T.J. Fitzgerald is quickly turning into a monster and is defnitely the focus of our attack. On the defensive side, I am very happy with the young duo of Berberich and Sinclair at linebacker. In our first game, Berberich had a big interception. In this game, Sinclair forced two fumbles, along with 2 tackles and an assist. Not surprisingly, our MLB Roosevelt Porter is leading our team in tackles. Week 3 - Tulsa
It's our first home game! Yay!
Recruiting No visits as of yet, though one of our recruits is visiting Navy. Injuries Roosevelt Potts (our #1 tackler) has the flu and is listed as probable. Tulsa (0-2) (-3) at Maryland (1-1) This game hopefully will get us back in the win column. Tulsa thus far has played two top 40 teams and have been annihilated, 93-7. I'm not really sure what to think of these guys, because I KNOW we're not Top 40 material. They may have just run into some tough scheduling. Code:
It was closer than the score looked, as neither team dominated. Code:
T.J. Fitzgerald was finally shut down, and it took the vaunted Tulsa defense to do it . This loss hurts a lot, because this was our first home game, and we were defeated by a pretty bad team. I have a lot of work that I need to do. One of my biggest disappointments thus far is my predicted 2nd team all-ACC tackle, Gino Spillman. He's been awful...missing a TON of blocks. Currently, he's 8 of 34 on key run blocks. ACC Standings and Scores Code:

Week 4 - West Virginia
This week, we face the 105th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers. Hopefully they'll be the cure for what ails us. They come in with the 110th ranked rushing attack. However, their poor record may only be due to a tough schedule (among their losses is a 45-0 shellacking to #2 Wisconsin).
Recruiting Visits Daryl Kirtsey, G, Walkersville, MD. #590 nationwide, 57++ Commits None Committed Elsewhere None Injuries None! West Virginia (0-3) (-2) at Maryland (1-2) Ok, this is pretty sad - we're 2 point underdogs at home, to an 0-3 team. We come in with the 14th ranked rushing attack in the nation, keyed by T.J. Fitzgerald's 336 yard rushing. West Virginia ia 107th in the nation in rush defense. You would THINK think is a cakewalk. Code:
They actually turned the ball over more times than us (4 to 2), but it didn't matter. Code:

Week 5 - at Eastern Michigan
Coming into this week, I decide to bench Gino Spillman in favor of redshirt sophomore Freddie Jordan. Let's see if he can get it done.
Recruiting Visits Jack Kemp, RB, Dover, DE. #8 recruit nationwide. Visiting us and Penn State Nick Andrew, T, Bethesda, MD. #664 recruit nationwide. Visiting us and Navy. Commitments None Committed Elsewhere None Going into this game with E. Michigan, we still have the 17th best rushing attack in the nation. E. Michigan comes in 4-0, but they've played NO ONE. Then again, we ARE no one . Defensively, they're 18th in the country, giving up only 11.2 points per game. Should be interesting as teams have a hard time passing against them, but their rushing defense isn't the best. Maryland (1-3) at Eastern Michigan (4-0) (-19) Man, now that's a point spread . Well...they beat the spread and quickly put the game away . Code:
Since we were behind, we could never get into our running game, and the final statistics showed... Code:

They give up 5 points per game, good for 4th in the country. This is going to be a very long day. Code:

Injuries
Howie Finch, CB, probable Darrin Cooley, RB, doubtful Arnie Holliman, TE, probable, 4 catches, 54 yds. Jesse Kennison, DT, Out, 6 games, 8 tackles, 2.0 sacks #3 North Carolina (8-0) (-30) at Maryland (1-7) Well...welcome to the buzzsaw. North Carolina runs a veer offense and is 2nd in the country in rushing. Senior Dominic Asimov gets the majority of carries (219-1049, 4.7ypc, 16 TDs) and he's also the 2nd best receiver. Obviously he's the guy to watch. Their passing attack isn't bad either behind senior Greg Bernstein (15 TDs, 4 Int). They've turned the ball over only 6 times this year . On the other side of the ball, they've held opponents to 1.74 ypc and 5.42 yards per pass attempt. It's very clear they pound the ball and eat up a lot of the clock. That's something we hope to do in the future, but we're not doing it now, as evidenced by our 118th ranked offense . Code:
Our 8th loss in a row...and the way we're playing now, I don't see us winning anymore games despite the fact we have no more ranked opponents on our schedule. We had 6 turnovers, and we were held to 171 total yards, so this could have been a lot worse. As predicted, Asimov ran all over us for 160 yards, and Bernstein passed for 252 yards and 4 TDs. They're both seniors, so we'll never have to see them again. Norm Potter gained 93 yards on 15 carries for us as T.J. Fitzgerald was completely ineffective (5 carries, -4 yards). Leland Witt, a senior OLB, intercepted a pass and returned it 49 yards. He's one of the guys who has gracefully given up his starting role to Sinclair and Berberich. Messenger, T, Christiansburg, VA. #383, 73+ We got a LOT of help in this recruiting class. A number of these guys are going to be good enough to start next year. It will be difficult to redshirt as many as I want. Maryland (1-9) at North Carolina State (4-6) (-25) OMG - is that what we've come to? A 25 point underdog to a below .500 team?! I don't doubt it but...this seems a LITTLE extreme. I hope our staff remembers this - I can't see it getting much worse than this. And...well...the final score...let's just say there will be a NEW rivalry with N.C. State. After this game...in the future...I will have no remorse with this team. Code:
Can you blame me? 8 turnovers on our part didn't help....but 671-204 total yards?! I HATE this team. They had 10 touchdown passes against us - I guess that's some sort of record . One of their receivers (Kelly Branch) had SIX TD receptions, giving him 16 on the year. And....drum roll...he's a sophomore. Must....defeat....evil. Injuries Brandon Garvin, a senior WR broke his leg in multiple places and his career is officially ended. Brandon led Maryland with 19 receptions and 311 yards with 1 TD. Team doctors are still not sure whether he's faking and is just too embarassed to show up for the last game against Wake Forest. Other ACC Action Clemson 52, South Carolina 0 North Carolina 14, Duke 13 (wow!) Georgia Tech 27, Virginia 17 North Carolina clinches the 2003 ACC Title! Congratulations! |

Week 14 - at Wake Forest
Recruiting has officially ended. After this week, I'll go over the recruiting classes for each of the ACC teams...BTW, North Carolina is now the #1 team in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. Clemson is #11, and Duke drops to #17.
Maryland (1-10) at Wake Forest (4-7) (-17) Well...here we go kids...a last hurrah for a lot of you. And the last game of the worst year of your lives for the rest of you. This is a Maryland team that has been outscored 340-48 in it's last 7 games. Again, all I can think is - "it can't get worse than this." On to the game... Code:
Wow...we stink. We couldn't even keep it close with a 4-7 team. You have to respect the kids, they never gave up My question is - how did we ever win our first game?! The lone bright spot? The season is over for us. ACC Action Florida 54, Florida State 14 Georgia 24, Georgia Tech 17 Indiana 35, N.C. State 14 Virginia 48, Virginia Tech 10 Final ACC Regular Season Standings Code:

On to the Playoffs!
The ACC is proud to announce they have 3 participants in this year's College Football Playoffs.
Of course, #1 and undefeated North Carolina has earned a bye with the ACC title. In other games, #18 Duke (10-2) (-23) will face Nacy (5-7) in Parkersburg, WV - wow! Also, #10 Clemson (10-2) (-3) will take on #8 Penn State in Florence, SC. It seems Duke really, really won the luck of the draw on that one. Ivy League winner Princeton will be taking on USC (-29). In another lopsided contest, #16 Temple (10-2) (-32) will take on Louisiana-Lafayette (4-8). On to the games! Duke 48, Navy 13 Clemson 33, Penn State 7 Temple 35, La-Lafayette 7 USC 59, Princeton 7 Just as predicted. The ACC is looking good |
