Gunners ?

In a FOF related and general football question, can someone please explain to me what a gunner is, or does on special teams ?

The game seems to recommend the players with highest special team skills, and I don't really know what else to do.

Gunners are the players who set up in the widest part of the punt formation (closest to the sidelines) and are responsible for containment on a punt return and for getting to the returner as fast as possible (i.e., to force a fair catch, down a punt, make a play, etc.)

Thank you for the answer Blue.

I take it the better players for that role would then be fast guys with good tackling skills ?

I think that's the approach I would certainly take. Also a good "awareness" or whatever the comperable stat is. (Sorry, bought the game, installed it, haven't had a chance to play it).

Heh. I just activated my 3rd TE due to injuries elsewhere on the roster and clicked "recommend" on the offensive line depth chart screen. That backup tight end, all 6-4, 249 lbs of him are now designated as one of my team's gunners!

Now that what I call a gunner! I'd like to see those wimpy 5-9, 5-10 returners flinch when that big guy closes in on them!

Yesterday, Adalius Thomas a LB for the Ravens was their gunner.
