Official Red Sox - Yankees Game 7 Thread

Oh boy, down to one last game.

This has major karma going for it.

Game 7 of the ALCS.

Red Sox and Yankees - the best rivalry in sports. In Yankee stadium, of all places.

On the mound:

Clemens - the ex-Red Sox pitcher. Both loved and hated in Boston.

Pedro - the best Red Sox pitcher since Clemens. Once quoted as saying he'd "drill him (Babe Ruth) in the ass".

Really...I'm not sure pro sports can get better than this.

Agreed. Great game tomorrow. Maybe Clemens' final game, against the city that used to love him, and now passionately hates him.

And New York each year begins to hate Pedro equally as much.

What a showdown.

Though, if the Sox lose tomorrow, i'll probably be close to dying; I have to admit this was one hell of a series, in fact both the Sox series have been amazing! I got the pleasure of going to game 5 yesterday, and despite the fact they lost, the energy there was amazing!

I can't wait.

Something terrible is going to happen to the Red Sox tonight. What will it be? If the baseball gods have already played their "One of your own fans denies you a trip to the Series" card, then what must they have up their sleeve for the Red Sox?

The mind boggles...

I think the gods of baseball are trying to kill Bud Selig. Imagine going from a Red Sox/Cubs WS to a Yankees/Marlins WS. The ratings would be a nightmare.

Cam, that was my thought as well.

What are the chances that some drunk fan throws a battery at Martinez during the game?... Really this is the kind of stuff that should make the board at the casino.

Lets go Red Sox!

So long as you don't include the NFL or NHL as "pro sports," I agree with you 100%.

I don't mean to sound like Brent Musberger, but has there been a bigger game in professional sports in the past 10 years?

I was there too, and yes, the energy was crazy.

the fans chanting "jailbird" when Posada came up was priceless.

I hate the yankees, but I'm damn sure rooting for them tonight, because a Yankees/Marlins world series is something I would have no interest in turning on at all in the next week and a half and can catch up on my sleep.

Also, I think hearing Red Sox fans moan, ESPICIALLY about Clemens beating Pedro twice, would be the best thing for me right now, an anguished Cubs fan.

Wasn't it when Garcia came up they were chanting that? I could't make it out over the TV, now I know thanks.

I missed the best past of game 5 last night. I had to meet my friend and go pick up our tuxes for his wedding. They were up 4-1 when I left my house and down 6-3 when we left his house to go. I was waiting to hear the bad news when I was on the way home but instead got to hear that I will have the opportunity to miss game 7 tonight (the rehearsal is tonight, who has a Thursday rehearsal? ).

I'm a Blue Jays fan, which means I hate Rogers Clemens even though I don't really know why.

It would be fitting to see Pedro outdeul him and end his career. I mean, not only is tonight the equivalent of a steel cage match, it's an actual retirement match. Beautiful...

I dunno, I'd rank Game 7 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals between Colorado and Detroit higher.

Come on guys, it's only baseball!

I must admit. I really wanted the Cubs to win. Now that they've lost, however, I am not sure. I hate the Yankees and prefer the Red Sox to them, though, at this point, I may just want a Yankees/Marlin series to spite MLB.

I said it in the other thread, and I meant it. It should be a package deal - Sox and Cubs. Without the Cubs, the Sox need to lose.

I can justify this in my mind - the fact that the Yankees would make the WS - in two ways: (1) there's no pain worse than getting to the championship game/series and losing (or so we're told), and a Yankees' loss to the Marlins would bring me great pleasure; and (2) Torre and Cashman deserve to keep their jobs (although I'm not entirely sure why they want them at this point).

Actually yeah, I remember them saying it to Garcia, but Posada got a lot of it too. Mostly a lot of Joooooorrrrrrggggeeeee, Joooooorrrrrggggeeee chants. Those two got it the most though, then of course Jeter took the usual Jeter Swallows chants.

Putting my rooting interests aside, I think there would be beautiful historical symmetry if Jeffrey Maier was somehow involved in a crushing bottom of the 9th inning loss for the Sox...

After seeing Game 6 live last night, I can't even begin to imagine the energy and excitement tonight. I remember when I was desparately trying to get tickets when they went on sale on the web and I decided to focus on Game 6 instead of Game 7 figuring that 6 had a greater chance of actually happening. Oh how I regret that decision now. This game will probably end up being a dud (like most great matchups on paper), but could go down as one of the all time memorable games. There is just so much going on.

PS - as to the ratings - I think a Sox v. Marlins WS would probably have worse ratings than a Yanks v. Marlins. Say whatever you wan't negative about the Yanks, but they are a ratings draw.

I agree.. Sox vs Cubs likely would have the largest ratings draw followed by Yankees vs Cubs, then Yankees vs Marlins then Red Sox vs Marlins...

Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox have huge followings though, so not sure that it would be a huge drop off. MLB obviously lost out in ratings with the marlins in there

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't have a good feeling about Pedro's chances tonight. I thought he looked crappy to the point of something being wrong with his body in his start the other day, up until the point where he went headhunting. After that point he was much better, but it looked like he was really emptying the tank, or pitching through some kind of pain. It looked more than just an off day for him. I hope he proves me wrong, but it doesn't feel good.

And on an unrelated note, the forecast is for 10-25 mph winds again.

Really think Yanks-Marlins would outdraw Sox-Marlins? I can see the NY Market being huge, but the Sox are a big story.

Well we arent talking the difference between the Yankees and Royals here. Both the Sox and Yankees are huge draws (which helps show how Yanks vs Sox beat a miserable monday night football game in ratings last week). Normal matchups would not beat even a bad MNF matchup.

Generally speaking, the Yankees games draw better numbers than the Red Sox games (but not by a ton). What FOX was counting on was a Sox vs Cubs matchup, because not only would you get two huge fanbases , but also draw in alot of casual fans for the whole idea of the end of the world matchup here... a Yankees vs Cubs matchup would bring two large fanbases, but less casual watchers to a series featuring the winningest team in history and the team who has gone the longest since winning. ... A Yankees vs Marlins matchup would bring one huge fan base and I guess a david vs goliath story, but little interest beyond yankees fans. .. A Sox vs Marlins series would bring the same ..

The Slamball game last week

Other than that I can't really think of one... I just have a feeling that something strange like game 6 of the NLCS is going to happen. I have never ever been this excited about AL baseball, what has happened to me?

I've never seen a baseball line like a football line. Typically whoever the favorite in a baseball game is you can get for -1.5 at a better price.

My girlfriend is killing me with NC State/Clemson right now..........

Here was the final line that I could find

Boston -110
New York +100

So even money on NY, lay 110 to win 100 on the Red Sox

If you want the run line
Boston -1.5 runs +140
Lay 100 to win 140 laying a run and a half

NY +1.5 runs -160
Lay 160 to win 100 taking the run and a half

No brainer for me, Boston minus the runs was the bet. I have WS tickets for the stadium, so I know Ticketmaster is going to screw me out of about $50 in UPS and 'service' charges.

'and win' being the operative words, there, since the Sox have been to the Series as recently as '86, and '75 before that.

But, yeah, point taken. classic.

This is the inning for the Yanks. Torre lengthened the top of the 7th with that pitching change and God Bless America. How hot is Pedro still?
