Question Football Basics

Does anyone have a link, or know of anywhere, that explains basics of football? Like, what each formation does, what some plays try to do, some strategies, etc.? I would like to be able to tell what play is being run, what should be done in a certain situation, and stuff like that while watching a football game. It would make me enjoy it even more, I would think.

Thanks!

Both the Dummies and Idiot's Guide books for football are actually quite good. You might want to look at those first. Other than that, most books on football tend to be specific (ie Complete Linebacking, Coaching the Offensive Line, Coaching the West Coast Offense, etc.)

I personally have found the AFCA books to not be all that useful.

As simplistic as it may sound, peruse the strategies section of this and the old board. Some of the subjects on specific strategies (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/ubb...c&f=5&t=000243 this thread for instance) are incredibly enlightening if you have a rudimentary knowledge of the game already.

I heavily recommend The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football by Paul Zimmerman (Dr. Z of Sports Illustrated). It's out of print, but can easily be found for cheap on half.com.

It's the best football book I've read.

When you decide on something please send a copy to Butch Davis - he is in the same predicament as you !.
