Just got a link to this myself, and it tickled a funny bone here. Want to rule your own nation? Go to www.nationstates.net and sign up for their game. You have to enter a bit of information and answer some questions about your natiuon's political views, but then you're off and running.

For example, here's my Republic

The Republic of SirFozzie
"In Chaos, there is strength, In Insanity, Freedom."

UN Category: Inoffensive Centrist Democracy
Civil Rights: Good Economy: Reasonable Political Freedoms: Below Average

Location: The North Pacific

The Republic of SirFozzie is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its burgeoning bear population. Its hard-nosed population of 5 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The medium-sized government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Religion & Spirituality, and Social Welfare. The average income tax rate is 21%, but much higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is led by the Gambling, Furniture Restoration, and Retail industries.

Crime is a problem. SirFozzie's national animal is the bear, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the pun.

Hope to see y'all there, maybe we can form a powerbloc in the game's UN

"What's mine is mine, what's your is mine"

The Republic of Marmelicious is a tiny, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 5 million are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded, pro-business individuals devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Furniture Restoration, Cheese Exports, and Retail industries.

Crime is a serious problem. Marmelicious's national animal is the marsupial, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the marmel.

Oh, I already had an issue. Should democracy be compulsory, IE, should you be forced to vote?

I said "What, are you kidding me?" Look at the folks who do vote.

Ok, here's how, since Foz likes ignoring me.

Go to your region (Mine is South Pacific) on the left side. It says something like "Tired of your region? Move!" or something, so just click that and type in FOFC.

The UN is the world's governing body. Membership is voluntary, but all member nations must abide by UN rules.

Doesn't sound like we'll have a lot of UN Nations in FOFC

For example, here's the current vote infront of the UN:

The Resolution At Vote
The following resolution is being debated by the UN. If it passes, it will immediately take effect in all UN member nations.

The Cato Acts
A resolution to increase democratic freedoms.

Category: The Furtherment of Democracy Strength: Strong Proposed by: The Global Market
Description: Reaffrming our undying commitment to liberty, be it resolved by this honorable United Nations that the following measures shall be passed in all member nations:

Article I- That all taxpaying citizens shall be entitled to be represented in the government.
Article II- That in all legal matters, the prosecutor or plantiff shall carry the burden of proof, and all accused persons shall enjoy a presumption of innocence.
Article III- That the right of free speech and press shall not be abridged, except when such speech or press violates a contract (such as software piracy) or poses a clear and imminent danger (such as deliberately inciting a riot).
Article IV- That no person shall be censored, sued, or prosecuted for his political or religious beliefs.
Article V- That all persons shall have the right to petition the government and assemble nonviolently.
Article VI- That government shall neither directly endorse nor censure any religion.
Article VII- That no person shall be enlisted in the armed forces against his will, nor be forced into involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime for which the said individual shall have been duly convicted.
Article VIII- That all private individuals and businesses shall have the right to emigrate from any nation, though individual nations shall reserve the right to create their own policy on immigration and naturalization.
Article IX- That inventors shall be entitled to protection from international patents for a period of no less than eighteen months from the time of invention.
Article X- That government shall neither abridge nor expand the rights or responsibilities of any citizen on account of "race".

All legislation in conflict with these acts are hereby null and void.

These acts named in greatest honor of Marcus Portius Cato the Younger (95-46 BC), who died valiantly trying to protect the Republic from the yoke of Caesar.

Votes For: 2898

Votes Against: 5198

[Delegate Votes]

Voting Ends: Thu Sep 25 2003

Weird, its affiliated with that book, Jennifer Government.

Its an OK read. Not for many of the people on this board, though (it's very anti-free market). The dust jacket compares it to Catch-22, though I do not think that it is even in that league.

Interested in playing the game.

Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million enjoy frequent elections, which are uniformly corrupted by big-spending corporations buying politicians who best suit their interests.

The small, moralistic government is mainly concerned with Law & Order, although Defence and Religion & Spirituality are on the agenda. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 4%. A large private sector is led by the Pizza Delivery industry, followed by Woodchip Exports and Gambling.

Crime is a serious problem. Havotonian's national animal is the colosal squid and its currency is the benjiman.

Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 5 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The medium-sized, corrupt, moralistic government concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Commerce and Defence are secondary priorities. The average income tax rate is 14%. A robust private sector is led by the Book Publishing, Furniture Restoration, and Beef-Based Agriculture industries.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Nightion's national animal is the wolverine and its currency is the jefferon.

The Republic of Lcjjdnh is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

The enormous, corrupt government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Social Welfare, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 26%. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Automobile Manufacturing.

Crime is a problem. Lcjjdnh's national animal is the duck billed platypus, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the vowel.

As someone who has always had a roof over my head and food in my belly, I can't complain too much about the economic system that made it all possible.

I do, however, believe that some functions are best left to the government and made available to all. The book, for example, is set in a near future in which the free market taken to the extreme. For example, 9-1-1 in the book is a subscription only service. If you do not subscribe and you need emergency assistance, then you are SOL. Same thing with the police and the DAs office. If you are wronged by a criminal, the only way to get her caught and put in jail is to pay the police and the prosecutors to do it. I believe that functions like the police and 911 services should be left to the government and made available to all--even though I am sure that they could be done more efficiently and cheaply if they were privatized. Do others agree?

The Oppressed Peoples of Boring Television is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-nosed population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Religion & Spirituality. The average income tax rate is 49%, but much higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Arms Manufacturing.

Crime is moderate. Boring Television's national animal is the squirrel, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the bone.

The Community of The Wolfe is a tiny, pleasant nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The small government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Social Welfare, and Education. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 10%. A small private sector is dominated by the Door-to-door Insurance Sales industry.

Crime is a problem, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. The Wolfe's national animal is the wolf and its currency is the bones.
