OT: Me First and the Gimme Gimmies

I'm not much into "punk" music, but I picked up a Me First and the Gimme Gimmies cd tonight. I' really enjoying it. Kind of pop-punk, and the fact that they do all cover songs is pretty cool.

It's no Johnny Cash, but it's certainly fun driving music.

The band in the thread name. I am currently listening to Ike Reilly and was at the time of my last post and thought it would be a good comparision because he is amazing. He's not the best, but I decided to use him instead of the single greatest musician of all time.

wow, i might actually have to agree with Cam.

and if your liking the "pop-punk" cover songs, try New Found Glory "From the Screen to Your Stereo" or something.

It's like a Seinfeld conversation, where everyone is talking to each other, but about completely different things.

me first rocks. the do an amazing job. I caught them at the Warped Tour this year and they were pretty good. They were a bit drunk (perhaps due to having their own bar on stage?) but considering all the guys have their own bands and this is only their side project and the Warped Tour is probably a sort of vaccation for them that's kind of what i expected.

in case you were wondering:

Fat Mike who plays bass also plays bass and sings in a little band called NOFX.

The singer, Spike Slawson, plays bass in the Swingin' Utters

and the two guitar players and the drummer are in Face to Face, Lagwagon, and the Foo Fighters (in no particular order)

yeah mfatgg are pretty funny. if you go to fatwreck.com click more news on the front page and then scroll a bit you can find a video they made that is pretty funny.
it has kind of a lot of celebrities in it: Jello Biafra, Mike Dirnt (Green Day), Andrew WK, Matt from alakaline trio... a bunch of others.
It's a cool video.

They are a f*ck band as McSweeny mentions - a side joke band project, not a for real band or anything. In this case the popularity of the thrown together albums may actually enable these guys to tour together or at least play on some of the package tours like Warped etc.. I have not followed them since about 1999 so I'm not sure if they have toured together.

Sometimes f*ck bands are formed for extra money, for fun, or simply get stuff out of your system that your main band does not allow you to do. For example, I bet Fat Mike would have difficulty getting NOFX to do most of these cheezy cover songs. Even if the band didn't mind I bet their fans would prefer they play actual NOFX material - they have plenty. F*ck bands are fun stuff though and the all ager kids really dig those zany punk rawk version cover songs of the 1070's and 80's.
