What I didn't know about yachts

We have a stack of magazines here at work where we donate to the hospital. On top of the stack is a recent issue of Yachting. I had never been on a yacht and I was curious about the interiors. In this issue, there was a spread on Jeff Gordon's 104-footer.

The next page shows shots of the interior.

I am a very visual person but I cannot reconcile the wide-angle shots of the main salon and main bedroom with the exterior. I just don't see how something so spacious looking can fit on a rather sleek boat. Anyone been on one?

Is that the yacht his ex-wife renamed Jackpot?

I've been on one (though not as nice as the one in the picture above).

They are amazing. The one I was on had 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a small kitchen and a "living room" space. With that being a 104' yacht, I'm guessing if you see it in person it would look a lot larger than that picture implies.

look at the launch on the top of the boat. That thing has to be at least 16 foot long. That would suggest the main section is 18 feet wide. What are the dimentions of your living room?

Although I know zip about photography, my guess is that the picture of the salon appears wider than it really is.

Either that, or it's one big-ass boat.

Good point. The salon isn't really that wide. Look at the space left after the length of what is basically a love seat.

I vote big-ass boat.

I wonder if Jeffrey ever uses that crystal chess set...

If the usual nascar crowd is correct, you don't want to know what he does with those chess pieces.

I work for a company that makes coach shells for conversion into motorhomes, you know the kind that many bands use on tour and let me tell you that they have all kind of tricks to make it look more spacious than it really is.

We don't do the conversion, simply the shell. Whe the coach leaves our plant, the floor is simply plywood. Then it goes to a converter where it'll gain many hundreds of thousands of dollars in value...

Link to where I work: Prevost Car

This is the kind of vehicle that will leave our plant...

And this is the kind of interior they put into one of them...

While I agree that the effect of width in the yacht is much more impressive, you have to see that this boat is a "bad ass" boat. It looks huge from the outside pic...

Based on the exterior picture and Fritz's estimate of the size of the launch, I'd guess that the interior space must be about 80' X 16', giving a living space of 1280 sq. ft. That's not that much smaller than my 3 bedroom, 2 bath house. So I can believe that the interior pictures are a pretty accurate representation of the real size.

Yep, right behind FOFC and our aircraft carrier. Whose driveway did we park that thing in anyway?

When Frog mentions that hundreds of thousands of dollars are added after it leaves his company, i almost worried until I remember the exchange rate for Canadian money actually makes all my Monopoly money worth its face value. :-) Gold 500's anyone?

Yeah, yeah, yeah mock me A motorhome with the interior all converted like I showed you can be worth from 1.1 to 1.6 millions of AMERICAN dollars... no exchange rate in this my friend...

The shell only is worth about 400k US dollars when it leaves our plant. We're talking 45 foot long coaches here...

using mirrors all around is quite usual in this kind of vehicle (as it is in coaches) to creat the effect of a wider space. That and using shiny surfaces for counter tops, like marble for instance...

Without taking a potshot at our northern neighbor, "1" is more like a an American highway than a true interstate.

I hear you. There was a convention of motorhome converters in Quebec City about a month ago and employees were allowed to visit the motorhomes they had there. It's amazind the weight they add to teh structure of the vehicle. Marble and hard wood molding all over the place.

Many of them had widescreen plasma TVs (flat) coming down from the ceiling, very impressive... All of them with 2 or 3 tvs, sometimes one in the baggage bays for outside viewing...

Just having fun. If you read my posts, you will see that I have themes that I bash to death. I crack myself up. I only wish it had that effect on others. :-)

Frog, that is an excellent comparison.

I think clintl's numbers make sense, here are the floorplans (notice what threw me was that the bedroom is on the lower level - is it below water line?).

You guys are fooled so easily. What you are really looking at are miniature tables, chairs, well basically mini everything. Unless you are a smurf, there is no way you could fit inside.
