Tiger Beware II: T.W. PGA Tour, Pro Level
Welcome to the next level, as they say.
Read the exciting adventures of T.E. Almighty as he made his way through the amateur ranks to the Pro Tour, now out in paperback. It is no Seabiscuit, but it IS better than The Billy Madison Story. T.E. the Amateur Read on for the continued shenanigans as T.E. fights his way to more fame and ever greater fortune (or busts back to amateur level).

Technically T.E was never an amateur, because amateurs can not win money.

Attributes
One of the good things about taking time before moving up to Professional level is that we seem to have some extra money in the bank. So, the first order of business is to spend a bunch of it, which we will start doing by increasing our attributes.
Cost: $50,000 Bankroll: $8,825 We are hoping that we will not outright lose to many events when there is an opportunity to split, and the fees are not to steep. We figure we do not need a large wad of cash, so might as well spend most of it.

Lessons Learned
Another thing you get to do is learn new kinds of shots that are needed in special circumstances. As a Professional, there are 3 new shots you can attempt, so we might as well add them to our repertoire immediately.
With that in mind, we go to the local club pro and take some lessons. We learn:
The power shot won't be useful too much until our 'Power" attribute is higher. We managed to pass the lesson only with a 100% , very fast swing. High spin didn't really work. We got the ball on the target, but there was no backspin- the ball just rolled into the specified area. Each lesson costs us $75. Bankroll: $8600

Practice
We go to the practice range looking for some competition, but all that is offered today seems to be chipping contests that cost more than our current confidence with chipping allow us to persue.
We would like to take a Skills Competition, where ther are lots of events to work on in one competition, but that chance does not appear. Getting bored on the range, we decide to try out our first calendar offering, a 6-hole match play event.

There was an obvious increase in the skill of our opponent from the amateurs we had faced before. Walker had only one poor hole and it cost him the match thanks to our good/lucky scrambling.
However, with all the scrambling we DID have to do for par saves and so forth, we can see that every competition will be much harder (since I am not really all that good... at least not yet) and there will probably be many more defeats than we have ever had in our life.

I don't know if it the luck of the draw or what, but my partner was not much help. His shot was used a grand total of 15 times, which is about 22.7%. I am not really good enough yet to carry a team, I don't think. If necessary, I guess I better GET good enough.
With a now $50K+ bankroll, I think it is time to raise an attribute or 2.

Raising Attributes
Winning $33K in one event sure does make raising the 'ol attributes easy. So, let's get on with it, then test it on the next calendar event.
Cost: $50,000 Bankroll: $9,016 As before, we are not in any hurry to move to the next level, especially since we are not that good yet and the next level could prove a bit tough. Therefore, we will bide our time, even though we only need a bankroll of $25K to have enough to raise our attributes high enough to go to the q-school for the next level. We prefer to stay where we are until it is either not fun or too easy/boring.

Note to readers who are playing Tiger Woods on their own also...
The shootout was a lot of fun. In fact, that is my favorite part of the game, I think; all the variations of games in a career setting are great fun. The shootout is cool because the pressure (such as it is on a computer game) is big. One bad shot and you can probably kiss your ass goodbye. I do wish, in a way, the fees to enter some of the events was a LOT more steep. That's one good thing about the practice range stuff- you can raise the stakes if you want to make it more interesting.

I had not done a shootout yet but it does look like fun. I fully agree with you on the fees. It seems to be no penalty to play, esp. compared to a practice range challenge.
After 5 false starts, testings and incompletions, I finally have started my career in earnest. What I had to learn were choosing the right kind of challenge (ones that I can usually win) and the length of time it takes for the many types of challenges and calendar events. For example, I know for sure I can win driving challenges if the opponent comes up with an average of less that 240. There, I can bet up to the max and with two of these, I can triple my funds. I just love the variety of challenges and events. |

I agree, Buccaneer, about the Driving challenges. In fact, even in the matches, I think the amateurs pretty much all use a 3W on every tee shot, like they have not made enough prize money to afford to buy a driver, or something.
I always max out the ante in a drive competition, mostly, which is nice in Pro level cuz the max is $10K instead of the $2k I think in Amateur (that is per person, not total).

Just installed and started a career last night. The career mode really looks like a lot of fun. I messed around once and have just started a "real" career.
I have decided to add two house rules to give the game a little more sense of time progression. 1. I'm going to play along with the calendar, and on any day for which there is no event scheduled, I can either take as many lessons as I want or practice one time. Basically, this means that I can only practice once a day. 2. If I practice, I have to accept the first challenge at the stated amount. The amateur level is pretty easy, although I lost my share of events in my "warm-up career". Are you all playing with the putting grid turned on? |

Jeez, this game sounds far, far different from the Xbox version. I think I would've enjoyed playing the PC version a lot more. Thankfully, I only rented the Xbox game a couple of times instead of buying it. Oh, well. The next version of the game will be out fairly soon.

That's interesting. I struggled with challenges and events and finding a balance. My problem was that it takes me over an hour to play a match (assuming 16-18 holes). For a challenge, I have better have the time to complete that or else I lose the money. For some reason, the putting grid seems generic looking. I've played JN6 GBC for years and there you can see every bump on the green. The putting grid in PGA doesn't seem to be that precise or mean that much. At the amateur, I am finding quite a bit of tolerance in driving, chipping and putting where I can mishit badly and still have a straight drive or a close putt. I guess that's the nature of the amateur level (encouraging you to continue) and I suspect it does get much harder at the higher levels where you have to be much more precise. I have played around with TrueSwing and found it to be generic. I physically did not feel or notice any noticeable difference between drivinging the ball 61% or 101%. It may again be a factor of the amateur level where it has a wide range of tolerance. I still love my 3-click where hitting a putt 3.5 vs 4 can make a difference whereas in TrueSwing, you just have to "feel" it. I like methodical better. |

Pumpy, I would say that is true for every single console vs. PC game that has ever been made. Of course, given my bias in having mouse/keyboard controls, superb graphics cards and more CPU for AI controls would leave me not ever wanting to play console games. I cannot even imagine playing this game on a console hooked up with an ordinary TV. NCAA might be better but imagine if you were able to view TCY-like tables instead of simplistic, large font tables they are limited to.

I believe the putting grid gets more detailed as you spend points to increase your putting rating. |

I see where you're coming from, but that's not exactly what I'm referring to. I'd prefer to play Madden on a console, and I actually prefer playing Morrowind on a console (yes, I know how you feel about Morrowind, but humor me). I prefer console controls by far with games in which I have to move a character around. I despise mouse/keyboard combinations. Give me one or the other, but I hate trying to use both. Also, resolution on TV's doesn't bother me too much. I understand that the PC monitor can display many, many more pixels, but I'm generally happy with what I've experienced on the few consoles I've owned. About the Tiger Woods game, though, I meant that there is nothing resembling this sort of "career mode" in the Xbox version. There's the "Tiger Challenge" in which you can compete against various players in match play, and there are some tournaments, but it's a completely different animal.

Pumpy, I understand. Two thoughts. First, in FPS-type games, I like the mouse/keyboard because I can move and do mouse look at the same time. I've heard that's hard or impossible to do with just a gamepad. Second, regarding PGA, I think it is the lack of AI-based CPU that prevents a career mode. In other words, consoles have to sacrifice a lot just to maximize frame rates. That's probably why FPS, RPG and arcade games work good on consoles (provided you ignore low resolutions and gamepad limitations).

The putting grid is pretty lame and I haven't noticed if it is better now that I have advanced to Pro level. I always look at the level icon at the bottom to see the vertical change from the ball to the cup. Of course, that won't help if you are going over hills but it says level.

Nor does it help to indicate much of a R/L or L/R lie, if the game cares about that, esp. on the fairway.

Here’s a problem I have that is preventing me from advancing beyond the Amateur level and taking on a wider of challenges. I am having problems knowing how to set and hit short irons. For the driver and long irons, they are fairly simple. I take a look at the distance rating, see where the landing is going to be and use that to determine if I hit it normally (100%) or overpower. But this goes out the window for me on short irons, esp. out of bunkers and roughs. A few examples.
I’m in the Sand, 22y from the pin. I pick a SW, set it on Blast which has the distance of 76y. The landing shows me something in the next county so that doesn’t help at all. I hit it normally and it goes 15y beyond the pin. How would I have know how hard to hit that? Another example is being 38y in the Sand. Again, SW on Blast, I hit it about 85% and it comes up 21y short. Here’s a more typical example. On the Fairway close to the Green, about 21y to the pin. I select a LW, set it on BumpRun and hit it 30%. It goes only 36feet. On the practice range, I go back to that spot and come to find out that the best setting would have been LW set to Pitch (a 31’ distance rating???) and hit it about 60%. How in the @%#$ would I have known that?? I am keeping a detailed log of everything, but a lot of this stuff comes up for the first time during a challenge or event. What is the best way to set and to know how hard to hit in situation like these? Thanks. |

You have to also take into account elevation difference. I don't know if that's the difference between the two examples you gave with the SW. It's basically a case of experience in figuring out how hard to hit it factoring in distance, wind, elevation and the lay of the green.

Anything around the green or any chip and putt, as far as I can tell, is a 'feel' shot. The regular distances for each club go out the window when chipping.
For example, I have a putt of 2 feet and try to hit the ball as hard as I can. It will not let me hit too hard. No matter how fast I swing or how far back I pull the mouse, the ball only goes a short distance. Practice range 'til you get blisters (and even then, it seems, 1/3 of the shots do not work as you expect. A conundrum, indeed.

Attributes
$30k for a couple of Trophy Balls do indeed speed things up a bit.
Cost: $24,000 Bankroll: $32,929 As mentioned previously, we do not want to 'power' through the levels. Tiger and the rest are not going anywhere. When we get too good, or tired of this level, we will raise the final attribute to 50 and go to the next Q-school.

While on the practice range, we received an invite to a driving competition. Ordinarily, we would decline, as we don't need to bilk poor unfortunates of money just for the hell of it.
However, the invitation was SPECIAL, so we are going to give them a crack at it.

It's a GIRL
That's right, Equality Breath, it is a girl. We would say "Let's get it on." but that may not be the PC way to address it. "Shall we..."
Site: Royal Birkdale. Opponents: Darlene O’Conner, 245 yard average on drives. Scoring: Long drive wins the purse. Fee: $10,000 (I had to max the ante. It’s a girl, for crying out loud. If she beats me, I deserve to be broke.) Purse: $20,000 Round 1 Almighty: beat that. Distance: 275 yards O’Conner: animal magnetism seems to be overpowering her. Distance: no shot Almighty leads at 275 yards. Round 2 Almighty: better, still. Distance: 278 yards O’Conner: nice shot, for a girl. Distance: 249 yards Almighty leads at 278 yards. Round 3 Almighty: 108% Power Shot. Eat that!! Distance: 293 yards O’Conner: at least she did not fold. Distance: 253 yards T.E. Almighty WINS with a drive of 293 yards. I take home the $20,000 purse. Career Earnings: $201,926 Bankroll: $42,929

If I hadn't gotten my first ever eagle and first hole-in-one, it would have been fairly close.
If I kick ass in the next tourney, I will be moving up. If not, I won't.
