OT: Atlanta-Area Poker Game

I know I've briefly kicked this idea around in other Atlanta threads, but would like to get a bit more concise here. It seems like there is at least a small amount of interest from the Atlanta-area FOFC folk about putting together some type of poker game. I've talked with GrantDawg individually who has said he's definitely interested.

I'd like to throw this idea out there to all Atlanta FOFC'ers now. One thing I should say up front is that I would in no way be able to host the game. I'll be at Georgia Tech, and I don't think a dorm room is the best place to play. Also, I, myself lack personal private transportation, but I know Atlanta has a respectable mass-transit system that might work well for this sort of thing.

If there was someone who'd be willing to host the game, that'd probably be a good place to start. (I know it's not exactly the most PC thing to do to start this without being able to real take a lead, but there's not much I can do about that.)

Oh - one other thing, however minor it may be, is that I could provide chips. I have 300 casino-quality clay chips that would probably suit our needs just fine.

So from here hopefully others will contribute some ideas and we'll try and get something going.

Thanks!
~kyle (rpi-fan)

I'm in, as long as Kickstand doesn't fly down here and play. After reading his thread on computer poker this morning, I still have a headache.

I'd love to play, and eventually I'd like the setup to host a game, but, well, think 26 years old, single, rather minimalist apartment setup. If I pick up a table and some chairs and that sort of thing over the next few months I could do it... but not atm unfortunately.

Are we talking about on a regular basis, or a sporadic thing. There is a weekend in August that SWMBO will be out of town that I'd be up for doing it at Chez Lewis.

I was thinking we'd try it once in August or September, and then if all goes well let it take off from there.

That's 5 of us, which gives us a game. So should we say it's on?

Also, now's about the time when I have to try and bug someone into giving me a ride.

I'll be at the Georgia Tech campus - any takers?

That "respectable" mass-transit system (was he serious???) actually drops off on the corner right next to my house. I live just about as far out as you can possibly live and have MARTA come to you. If you can't get a ride, you can take the train to the Doraville Station, and then the bus to my house. I live on a corner that is a bus stop.

I didn't know about it, so I shouldn't have qualified it as such. (From the 1 or 2 people I'd asked about it, they didn't give it horrible reviews.) In fact, I've never been on it, seen, or hell, been within 500 miles of it. But I'm sure it'll work out (though, depending how late we go, I'm not sure if it'll run late enough to get me home.)

Anyone have more details on it?

Thanks!

Oh. It works fine. The primary problem is that the coverage of the city by train is horrid. There are essentially only two train lines: one running North and South, the other East and West (with a little spur off the North-South line), and the train lines don't go very far out from the center of the city. Being a suburbanite with easy access to a bus line, as I am, is VERY VERY VERY rare.

Probably 15 minutes from North Avenue station to Doraville station on the train, then another 15-20 from Doraville Station to my house. The wild card is how long you'll have to wait at the DOraville Station for a bus. It could be as long as 10-15 minutes on a Saturday. If you can get a ride, I would. Maybe one of the guys on the north side will come, and can pick you up at Doraville. Tech or Doraville would be a long way out of the way for G-Dawg or KWhit though.

Which bus route do you live on, GD?

Wait might be longer than 15-20 minutes, especially during off-hours of the night. I live pretty close to the Doraville station, and if I can make it that night, I can make a pickup, but no guarantees. :/

I'm assuming you meant "SD" there. I don't remember the number of the bus route. We can figure that out as it gets closer. I live in the middle of Tucker, in the neighborhood behind the high school.

Yeah, the closest Marta pickup from my house is about 15 miles. That would be a decent walk. I'm looking forward to this. I haven't played poker in in about 12 years. What kind of money are we talking about here? (Small, I hope).

Dang, I'm leaving Atlanta that morning to head to Miami! Otherwise I'd be interested. I'd postpone the drive to Sunday, but we're renting a boat to cruise the keys, and the cheerleader will be there. Hmm, poker with the guys, or hang out in the Keys with the ladies... Sorry fellas, you lose

I can definitely take you back down to Tech when we're done RPI, might possibly be able to pick you up beforehand from Tech or a MARTA station as well, depends on the timing of everything.

The current "fun" home game I play in, people buy in for $25, antes are 25 cents, bets are in increments of 25 cents the first betting rounds, 50 cents the last betting rounds, dealers choice for the game, and you can play anything/make stuff up, whatever.

But honestly i don't care how we do it, it'd be fun to hang out and play some.

Yep, I'm in the same boat as Radii. Of course I'm 'used' to our game that we play every week or two with the guys, but I'm very open to change.

Something about antes just sounds 'wrong' though.

Radii: I"ll contact you as the date comes nearer - thanks for the offer though - greatly appreciated!

When we play our marathon poker sessions(the rare 6pm-4am thing, or even the usual 8pm-2/3am thing) we occasionally have a group of people at a table who are willing to play w/ blinds. But that basically limits you to hold 'em/omaha variants and a lot of people get bored/frustrated by that so we don't do it so often.

Bump. It is this Saturday. I'm thinking that I'll fire up the grill, and make it BYOM (bring your own meat). I'll provide sides and soft drinks. If y'all want to show up at around 7pm, we can grill, eat and play. How's that sound to everyone? Shoot me an e-mail if you're coming, and I'll give you directions to the house.

If BYOM sounds like a hassle to others, the other alternative is that I wouldn't mind springing for burgers and dogs for everyone. I'd prefer a big ol' steak, but probably can't afford to buy for all of y'all on a youth ministry salary.

Or better. People who do want to bring meat, bring extra. It should cover everybody pretty well. No reason the burden should be on you.

Did somebody mention me?

Daddy-duties (Will's first weekend since school started, gotta be fun & entertaining) have kept me out of the possibile players in this thread but I gotta ask: where in the world is KWhit that he's as far in the middle of nowhere as me? I didn't think that was possible without going deep below the gnat line.

And while I'm posting in a state thread ... I'm not doing HS football for radio this fall for the first time in years so maybe there's a mid-season gathering at a Tucker game to consider?

Hey Jon. I'm out in Conyers. Not quite the boonies that Monticello is, but still not a metropolis.

But I have bad news for you poker guys. I gotta bag out.

I hate to cancel last minute on you, but the wife and I were offered the (free) use of a very nice mountain cabin up in Blue Ridge for the weekend and it's too good to pass up. We just found out about it a couple of hours ago, so we're packing up now.

Anyway, I feel bad depriving you guys of my company, but I'm sure you'll find a way to have fun without me (and my money).

Again, sorry guys - and my wife thanks you for understanding.

Well, if we do it, then the game is obvious. Tucker at Marist on Friday, September 12th. Both teams should be ranked in the Top 5 at that point, are arch-rivals, and it could be the 2nd most-hyped regular season game in the state. Unfortunately for the hype, the Brookwood-Parkview game is also that night, so it will get all the press. The only other thing that could knock some of the luster off of this one is that Marist opens with Southwest DeKalb and Tucker opens at Griffin, so both teams being 1-1 at that point isn't out of the question. Neither team is likely to be seriously challenged in the regular season apart from the openers and when we play on the 12th.
