Pet Peeves about peoples thought process or lack thereof.

My biggest pet peeve is people who believe that they know more than they actually do and form their view on faulty knowledge. In my opinion this is dangerous and quite preventable.

I get a lot of chances to see this in action and I DO see it on a daily basis. These are people who will usually fly into a rage ( whether aggressive or passive matters not ) when their "knowledge" is challenged, making them look even more like a moron. Intellectual capacity seems to matter not; the smart are just as guilty as the lesser intelligent. I just don't get it.

Give me someone who is genuinely as dumb as a rock but who knows it and works within his capacity any day. I can work with that fellow and he will almost certainly achieve more than his humble skills may seem to allow.

Meanwhile the brilliant know it all is going to be the guy who shoots himself in the head because the gun he is cleaning can't be loaded.

In other words, for goodness sakes, THINK.

Sorry, just had to vent.

What are your favorite pet peeves about people and their thought processes?

From Finding Forrester...

People who ask non-soup questions...

Ugh, can't stand these type of people and these type of questions.

Then definately don't post on these types of threads.

By the way, is that the movie with Sean Connery? I've seen that movie but never in order. Caught bits and pieces of it on HBO many times until I'd eventually seen most of it. I don't remember the soup line though if it indeed is the same movie.

Think you miss understood me - I was talking about the soup questions, not about your thread.

Yea', you've got the right movie. Basically a 'soup question', is one that has a personal bearing on the person who asks the question. When people ask questions that don't affect them directly (non-soup questions), it annoys the fuck out of me.

Samdari,

Nice catch. That's one of my number one consistently made errors and I cringe whenever I make it. Thanks for pointing it out.

RPI,

I get it and I generally agree but probably have a wider tolerance for what affects me as satisfying curiosity does have a bearing on the questioner I'd say. Vacuous questions on the other hand...

Just out of pure curiousity, and I'm not trying to pick a fight... why are you dense in your political stance? From what you've described... I'd think you'd be someone who is open-minded... and I could be wrong, but thats not what I've seen in your post.

My pet peeve? Hypocricy.

How am I dense in my political stance? What do you see as my political stance? Which post are you talking about? I think I've been pretty flexible in my posts here not stubbornly insistent that I am right and everyone else is wrong. I too am curious not looking for a fight.

As for hypocrisy, that's high on my list too but it doesn't seem as personally destructive so I rank it a bit lower.

If I remember correctly, I remember you critcizing and putting down the bush adminstration and the war on Iraq rather stubbornly.... I will be happy to find it and pull it up if i'm not daydreaming.

Do find it. I have stated that I was against the war being labeled a moral war and didn't particularly like that we went but I've never been anti Bush much less stubbornly. I feel we acted in nationalistic interests and that those are neither moral or just, nor are they immoral or unjust. They simply are and all nations do the same thing.

In fact, my whole point was made because I hate hypocrisy. I think you've got the wrong guy here.

Apology accepted. Now, I think Kobe, Chris Reeves and M.J. Fox deserve one too.

Oh I played Zaxxon but galaga was much cooler.

Old?? Son, I remember when pong first came out and lets not forget the all time classic game machine Simon.

I still don't see how quoting my whole post simply to post an ill conceived insult in broken english accomplished much or was relevant in any way to the discussion.

I guess I'm just not as cool as Fritz, not that I'd want to be but that's another thing entirely.

Boy,
Reminds me of college. We have this kid who brags about having a 4.0, trying to brag it all the time. He thinks he been through everything, and tries to act like he knows all from love to sports. He flipped on Japanesee Cars vs. American Cars discussion once, and flips when he is proven wrong in a very cyco way. He always feels he is invited to go out with us and always feels he is tendered to my female friend (not in that way, but has no life), and we been nice bout it. He tries to be funny, but we find him annoyning and has no common sense once for all. He is always wrong, then is hyprocrite when we say something (not sure if spelled right ).Any advice on how to handle it this year?

SunDancer, punch him. And then kick him in the knee.

But if you want to solve it without violance(you f'n pussy), then I'd suggest at each and every moment that you hear him say something you _know_ is wrong (_know_ because you don't want to be made a fool. He'll never let it down), call him on it.

Only two things will happen.

1) He'll get so pissed off that he was wrong, that he'll probably leave you alone. Maybe not the first few times, but do it with people around and he'll get tired of it.

2) It'll finally humble him, and maybe he'll stop being such an egomaniac.

You have to be very blunt with these people, or they'll never be humbled (or they'll never leave you alone. Whichever one you're looking for)

In my experience, anyone who brags about a 4.0, or a high SAT score, or a high IQ, they generally don't know anything because they are so caught up in their own "genius" that they never bother to actually go out and learn something. They're "geniuses", and thus don't need to study up on anything that doesn't directly effect what makes them a "genius" (GPA, test scores, etc.)

A funny story along these lines. When the movie Excaliber came out, me and a friend of mine were sitting behind one of these geniuses. He had a girl on either side of him ( so when you think about it, he was doing something right but anyway )and throughout the movie they were asking him questions and he was playing know it all and generally giving misleading if not plain wrong answers.

It was obvious that he had no clue what he was talking about but that the ladies didn't know any better.

It all came to a head when one girl asked him what the holy grail was and he said "it was the cloth that they buried Jesus in."

Well, we lost it and very loudly started laughing. A guy sitting down the aisle who must have also been annoyed with this guy asks "what'd he say" and we told him. He started laughing and asked if he could have a drink off of our shroud.

The guy turns around and tries to look menacing but we just laugh harder.

Later, when they find the grail I turn to the guy down the aisle and say "isn't that a great looking shroud"? At this the two girls finally laugh and the guy gets up all pissed and they end up moving to the other side of the theater.

Fun, fun times indeed.

That's damn funny!

EDIT: Today I heard someone who was acting like a know-it-all at the resturant I went to say that "Hard water is what the water that comes out of a faucet is called."

I laughed but don't think they noticed.
