Most Popular Names List
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/?sex=female&yob=2002
Hmm, from the 1980's list, near the bottom, is listed both "E" and "G"... Almost as good a name as "Soda", or "Seven". ![]()

Anyone know how "christopher" went from one of the least popular names in the early 1900s to most popular in the 80s and 90s?

I belive that names go on cycles. But with the 60's and now the 90's I feel that is totally used up.

Are you truly ready for this Satanic conspiracy?
I was born in 1976. My name is Abraham. So I looked up Abraham in the Top 1000 names of the 1970's, right? Abraham is number 347th. My telephone number when growing up was 347-3447 Wow is that something. -Anxiety

Here's a seperate issue entirely. We must have a much smaller list of names to work from for females.
look at any list of Top 1000 names for a decade. Scroll down just a tad. Now, look at the number of females ranked at a certain spot versus males. More women have the same name at each spot than men - sometimes alomost double. In other words, woman are more frequently named the same name than men. I wonder what that says about our society? Do we unconsciously view women as part of a community whereas men are individuals? -Anxiety

1. Jacob 2. Michael 3. Joshua 4. Matthew 5. Ethan Guess that being in the Bible or the Tora helps a lot winning this contest ![]() The name we have chosen for our daughter (who still hasnt arrived) isn't even in the US Top 1000 (although it's in the French Top 15 !) |

The name Matthew has ranked 3rd from 1991 to 2002, excluding 2002 (4th) and 1996 (2nd).
I was trying to find tendencies of popular men's names. Sports Shaquille : 185th in 1993, dropped fast in the next years and was out of the top1000 from 1997 and on Kobe : not in the Top1000 before 1997, 567th in 1997, around 250 since 1998 Keyshawn : not in the list before 1996, around 800 til 1998, around 600 since 1999 and dropping since 2000 Anna : has been hot since 1999 Monica is dropping fast since 1999 Serena : getting more popular from 1997 and on, but since 2001 become less popular Venus has never been popular... Tiger didn't even make the cut... Politics Bill : in the top1000 since 1990, moving up until 1993, dropped off the list since 1994 Hillary : was around top200, but dropped out of the top500 since 1994 George : losing popularity every year since 1990, from 82 to 131 in 13 years time Al wasn't elected... Music Michael : still going strong, lost 1st place from 1999 and finished 2nd since Brittany : very popular in 1990 (3rd), but has been going down very fast from 1999 and on Shania : moving up fast from not listed in 1994 to 173 in 1996, dropping since 1999 Mick is passé... Dolly and Cher are not popular at all... Actors Tom : has been losing since 1990 and dropped out since 1998 Arnold : around 550 in 1990, dropping since then to 899 in 2002 Elijah : growing in popularity from 254 in 1990 to 41 in 2002 Eddy : isn't what it used to be, slowly dropping from 231 in 1990 to 377 in 2002 Jennifer : has been going down from 1990 to 1997, dropped out of the top 20 in 2001 Cameron : at her hottest in 2000 Will : was at his best in 1999, has been falling slowly since then Angelina : below 250 before 2000, has been a top100 name since 2001 Of course, some of the above are far fetched, but the identical Bill and Hillary drops are amazing... |

Heh heh, my name is popular. ![]() The second quote I have from you here, I notice, happens to coincide with the year anti-Clinton, anti-Democrat voter backlash voted in a Republican Congress. I guess it was all downhill from there. ![]() I'm too lazy to go check, but here some other ones to check out: Orenthal (or O.J.) Monica (as in Lewinsky) Trinity, Neo, Morpheus (good God, would parents actually do such a thing?) Gaylord (as in Fokker) Anakin Sammy Mark Barry LeBron If not Tiger, how about...Eldridge? CR

Unfortunately the answer is yes. Do not underestimate the stupidity of some people to name there kids something cutesy ("Muffy", "Sunshine") or trendy (famous people and yes, fictional characters) or just plain unusual. ("Britknee", "Mykil", "Quiksand") As an example, I came across a name the other day that just made me cringe. Drumroll please..............Precious-April. Not only cutesy, but hyphenated. What were these people thing? |

I wonder what caused "Jennifer" to be used twice as much as any other female name in the 70's. My wife fits was a Jennifer born in the 70's, as is her best friend.

The point they make about different spellings counting as different names is a pretty important one. Their example of "Katelyn" (and similar) is the best one-- as of a couple of years ago, a sensible grouping of all the variants of Katelyn/Caitlin/etc. would have added up to being the #1 girls' name in the USA.
Dreadful trends, I think. I suppose every generation holds to a certain fondness for what it finds familiar... but I'm basically with George Carlin on all this. He does a bit talking about how all the 'new-name kids like Tyler and Harrison and Carter and Connor are all one day going to get their asses kicked by the few remaining Billys and Eddies and Joeys out there. |

We named our daughter Caitlin in 1999. Had I known it was as trendy a name as it turned out to be at the time, I would have gone for something else. We started with the name Kayleigh (from the Marillion song), and ultimately decided against it, but wanted something similar. So we ended up with Caitlin. When I heard that Heather Locklear's character on Spin City was named Caitlin, I almost puked.
Oh well. She can change it to Moon Unit or Scumbucket when she turns 18 if she really doesn't like it.

The only time Brandon became the insane name was during the 90's. I attribute this entirely to the teenage pregnancy craze and 90210.
I was the only Brandon all through my school years, now I can't walk outside without bumping into one.

FWIW, I was named Christopher after a high school friend of my parents who died in Vietnam. Not sure how the name got so popular over the century, though.

Perhaps you need to pay more attention to where you walk, or try getting some glasses. Its not normal for a person to bump into folks so much.

As a matter of fact I am. You fat fucks make me want to puke. The worst is when I am sitting at my favorite steak house putting away a porterhouse and some lard bucket who has yet to be served is just staring at me while I chew. Sometimes the tubby bastards stare so intently that they hypnotize themselves and their puffy mouth starts moving in time with mine as I chew. You're that guy - aren't you?

Here's something I find strange:
My name is David, my brother is James. Both those names are very high ranked, and they seem to both generally be around the same ranking. Yet in my experiences, I seem to meet a lot more Daves than Jims. Perhaps it is because I just notice people with my own name more than anything else, but I'm not sure. It seems that every group of people I've been involved with, either a school class, a sports team, or a work environment, has had at least one other Dave. But I don't always recall there being a Jim/James. Maybe David is more popular in Canada than in those US studies? Or James less popular? Anyone else noticed something like this, where personal experience doesn't seem to correlate with the numbers in that report?
