OT: Current good songs

I'd like to make a mix-tape to take with me on the road this weekend, but I'm at a loss of where to look to find what hot new songs are out there.

I'm looking for good summer music, mostly rap, that I can groove to on the road. An example of a couple songs I am going to put on it are:

ADIDAS by Killer Mike
All I Want by Snoop (from his new DPG Recordz Mix Tape)

Anyone got any ideas? Or any "awesome rap songs" webpage links? I need some help here, I'm getting old and increasingly out of touch!

See, you have the words 'rap' and 'good' in the same post.

There's your first problem.

Not completely "new", but still decent:

The Roots - Seed 2.0
Joe Buddens - Pump it Up
Lil Jon & Yin Yang Twins - Get Low
Punjabi MC - Beware of the Boys

CD - The Mars Volta - DeLoused in the Comatorium
best CD I've bought in 3 or 4 years. Definitely different than shit that is out there. Experimental sound with a guy who sometimes ventures into a Rush voice, but it works.

I was all set to respond, but then I got to the "rap" part and you lost me.

What exactly is "Good summer rap?" Is that like the difference between "I capped the ho' as I watched tha fallin' sno' " and "Ho' town, summer in the city, capped tha bitches' ass cuz I wuz feelin' awful gritty"?

funny, I'm working on this very thing for a road trip

two "musts":
Joe Budden - Pump it Up
Beyonce - Crazy in Love (I simply can NOT hear this song too many times).

an "oldie" that oddly fits in well with a summer hip hop mix is Public Enemy's "Your Gonna Get Yours"

1. Monica- So Gone
2. Jay Z- Excuse me miss(remix)
3. Pharell ft Jay Z - Frontin
4. T.I. - Grown Man
5. Nelly - Shake ya tailfeather
6. Lil Kim ft Twista - Thug Love

Also on a side note I high recommend T.I.'s album "I'm Serious" its the best album released in a while that went unheard of...instant classic in my book.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Run DMC do the original Adidas song. I believe it was actually called My Adidas. Then again, not like rap stars aren't known for stealing someone else's song or idea.

Wow, you guys rock! Well, except the haters (you know who you are!).

Unfortunately, I was expecting a slow day and had intended on compiling this puppy at work. Then (of course) everything went all crazy-pants and I haven't had a chance to do anything besides read the list. And now I have to go on the road.

Anyways, thanks for all the awesome suggestions. I'm gonna use them to make this bad-boy on monday so I'll have it handy for cruisin' all summer long. I'll post something more informative next week.

Thanks again!

A'ight, if you want rap, here is some. It's a few years old, but I'd be willing to bet that you'd never heard the sounds of White Chocolate:

Notorious GMC
White Sugar
Pesci?
Tomah

EDIT: You may have to right click and 'save target as', though it should work.

I'm back! It looks like I finally have a chance to start listening to some of this stuff. Just a couple of points I'd like to make:

1. A lot of stuff you guys have suggested I already have listened to death (50 Cent, Xzibit, Nappy Roots). Not your fault for suggesting it, how could you know, but because of this I'm not including them on my mix. Obviously those are tight songs though, I love that shizzle.

2. For the people suggesting political rap and underground lyricists and stuff... that's all good stuff, and I'm gonna download it, but I want mindless cruise music... I want the most commercial stuff I can find that I haven't heard yet.

I know, I'm asking for the moon on this one eh? But still, you guys have listed some good looking stuff, time to hit Kazaa and see what it's like!

Thanks again!

got here a bit late, but those who recommended J5 (Jurassic-5) couldn't be more correct. Immediatley purchase the album Quality Control, and sit back and listen to what happens when top-notch rappers, and the TWO best DJ's in the business skip the gangsta shit and make great music.

They are the only hip-hop group I can whole-heartedly recommend to anyone.

If you're just looking for a song or two to put on a mix, I'd recommend:

"What's Golden" (from their newest album, power in numbers)
"Influcence"
"Great Expectations"

I have to say I was disappointed with the new album. To me, "What's Golden" and "Day at the Races" are both clearly the best songs on the album. The death-themed one is also quite good, but on the whole it (the album) just doesn't come close to stacking up to Quality Control, which goes about 10 songs before it shows any signs of slowing down. I guess you can't hit a home run every time.

I'm not a rap fan necessarily, but my friends all are, and I know that you can't make a good rap CD unless you got Lil' Flip on there.
