PDA

Now that I'm allowed to post again.

I would like to buy a handheld device that does the following two things well:

- read ebooks
- play MP3s

Based on those requirements, I believe the most important features are:

-as large a screen (ebookman size screen would be great) as possible- color is not necessary
-minimal glare
-ability to read plain text (free classics), html, and pdf
-large but fast storage medium
-long battery life
-high fidelity sound
-low price

Most importantly, it has to fit in my pocket though I don't care how much it weighs. Obviously what I want is a modern PDA. I've looked around a bit, and though I've found many devices which would be adequate, I don't really see anything that excels at both requirements at a reasonable price point (sub $500 with memory). Any recommendations?

Try the Sony SJ33 Clie, it runs for about 250, I think it can meet all your requirements.

Do you know offhand if it supports 1GB Compact Flash? Searching on google as I type...

Looks decent EXCEPT:

-has a relatively small screen (though high resolution)
-only supports 128MB of extra memory

Thanks for the pointer though...

What are peoples' opinions on Pocket PCs vs. Palm Pilots? When would you choose one over the other?

I thought this thread was about touching your woman in public... Disappointment abounds.

Really? Even the dedicated readers? Do you see this as outweighing the benefit of portability- dozens of books in your pocket?

Pocket PC over a Palm OS any day. Better compatibility, easier to use, familiarity, more features IMO.
