Top fathers and sons by category

June 15, 2003 NHL HULL, Bobby and Brett: They have never been known as particularly close. But neither is the competition in this category. Between them, they have lighted a lot of lamps: 1,316 times in all, and Brett's still going. The Associated Press named the Golden Jet, the NHL's first million-dollar man, the premier player of the 1960s. Brett may not have stood alone in the 1990s, but as far as scorers, he is in the NHL's top five. And one of the better talkers to boot. BASEBALL BONDS, Bobby and Barry: One had all the potential in the world. The other has used his potential like no one else. Each was born with a VIP pass to the 30/30 Club and kept checking in. They have 953 homers at press time. So there's no contest here, even though the Griffeys (Ken and Ken Jr.) and Alous (Felipe and Moises) might be the class of any other sport, especially with the extra touches: The Griffeys played together, and Felipe managed Moises. But baseball has more than 150 father-son combos. Everyone said it was a game about fathers and sons. AUTO RACING UNSER, Al and Al Jr.: Six titles at the Brickyard in Indy make this racing's dominant dynasty, and that doesn't even include the three that Al's brother Bobby won. This is no easy race, though. Some might choose the Earnhardts (Dale and rising Dale Jr.), the Andrettis or even the Allisons. Consider the Pettys, from Lee to Richard to Kyle to the late Adam. And that's not even following the family branch leading back to Richard's brother Maurice. Seems the kids get the spark as soon as they see some spark plugs. FATHERS WITH MULTIPLE SONS HOWE, Gordie and Mark/Marty: The baseball Alomars (Sandy a father to Sandy Jr. and Roberto) have a case, as do the baseball Boones (Bob is father to Aaron and Bret). But Mr. Hockey retired with every imaginable NHL record. More remarkable was his return at age 45 to play with his sons in the World Hockey Association, leading the Houston Aeros to two championships. Then Gordie played 80 games for the Hartford Whalers at age 52. Mark was a fine player himself, making six All-Star teams during a long career as a defenseman. Marty was just OK, but that's OK. NFL QUARTERBACKS GRIESE, Bob and Brian: Where are the Mannings (Archie and Peyton), you wonder? Show us some rings. Bob won titles in the pros, Brian at the University of Michigan. And though Peyton has been a more prolific passer than Brian so far during their NFL careers, Bob's cool efficiency wins out over Archie's errant play (125 touchdowns and 171 interceptions, albeit for some very bad teams). This case isn't closed yet. The Mannings have another slinging boy, Eli, on the way. CROSSOVERS (Tie) HILL, Calvin and Grant and NORTON, Ken and Ken Jr.: Calvin rushed for 6,083 yards and made four Pro Bowls. His son has an Olympic gold medal and has been named to six All-Star teams, a figure that may grow if he returns from injury. As for the Nortons, beating Ali twice will get you on most lists, and many felt Ken Sr. (twice a heavyweight champ and a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame) actually beat him twice. His kin made three Pro Bowls and won two Super Bowls as an NFL linebacker. NFL NON-QUARTERBACKS METCALF, Terry and Eric: The Matthews clan is impressive, with linebacker Clay Jr. and offensive lineman Bruce having long, distinguished careers that far exceeded what Clay Sr. did in four seasons as a defensive lineman. And Anthony's improved play at safety has the Dorsetts closing fast. But Terry Metcalf was an All-Pro for five of his nine seasons and has been named one of the NFL's top 100 players. The kid is the NFL's all-time leader in combined punt and kickoff return yardage. NBA BARRY, Rick and Brent/Jon/Drew: For sheer volume alone, this is an easy call. You might like the Bibbys (Henry and Mike), Bryants (Jellybean Joe and Kobe), Vandeweghes (Ernie and Kiki) or even the father-son combo of Jimmy Walker and Jalen Rose. And Pete Maravich's father, Press, played professionally too. But Barry, one of the game's 50 greatest, had three boys make the league (Scooter was a miss), and two are big contributors, especially Brent, who is a starting guard for Seattle. All that still hasn't helped Rick get a coaching job. GOLF AND TENNIS NO ONE: That's right. Sure, Gary Nicklaus (son of Jack) got a PGA tour card, unlike his brothers. And young Andy Miller (son of Johnny) has shown some signs, as has Bill Haas (son of Jay). But the Stocktons (Dave and Dave Jr.) and Geibergers (Al and Brent) are all the tour has offered in the past century or so, since Tom and Tom Morris, who you might have heard of ... if you're 150. As for tennis, consider this: No son of a seeded player at the U.S. Open has ever earned a seed himself. Exceptions are few: Fred and Sandon Stolle both won doubles titles at the U.S. Open. And if American hope Taylor Dent gets in the top 20, he'll join his father, Australian-born Phil. FATHER-DAUGHTER ALI, Muhammad and Laila: You know what Dad did. The Champ's girl? She was operating a nail salon when she decided to try boxing. She has some of his skills and all his confidence: On her Web site, the super-middleweight champ declares herself "powerful yet glamorous." Her slogan is "She Bee Stingin.'" Another less-known twosome: Nate Williams, an eight-year NBA veteran, is the father of Natalie, a WNBA star. There's also Julius Erving and tennis player Alexandra Stevenson, though that one's more controversial. If you want a father-son ring combo, take the Fraziers (Smokey Joe and Marvis) or Mayweathers (Floyd and the superior Floyd Jr.), with Roberto Duran Jr. not ready to say "no mas" on his own career. ----- This is what the Sun-Sentinal had to say. Who would you list?

I'd have to think about who I'd list....but women's boxing is almost as farcical as men's boxing. I'd take the Ali's on the same level as Elvis and Lisa Marie Presley. I'm curious to see what will become of Prince Fielder, and if Matt Martin will someday make it to NASCAR. |

Might be also worth a mention that Bobby Bonds was the Giants' batting coach for a couple of years when Barry first signed with the Giants, so they were also in uniform together for a time. |

For baseball, I'd give a special nod of the ol' ballcap to the Boone family. Grandfather Ray Boone, father Bob Boone, and sons Bret and Aaron Boone. That's a pretty damn impressive collection of father-son combos there.
