[POL] What makes a felony?
Wade and I were discussing the fact that felons are not permitted to vote in the United States. This is a topic I hadn't really thought about until recently, and Wade had never put much thought to. While discussing the finer points, I told him that I think he'd be surprised at what can make a felony charge. Can anyone on the pro/con side tell me some lesser crimes that people may be surprised are a felony conviction?

States define what a "felony" is. I believe most, if not all states, define a felony as any crime for which the maximum penalty is greater than 1 year imprisonment. That means if you are sentenced to 6 months in prison, but could have been sentenced to 2 years for the same offense, then you have been convicted of a felony.

I believe that once you've done your time and paid your fines that in most states you can get your voting rights re-instated. At least that's what I remember seeing.

Rhode Island voters approved yesterday restoring voting rights to felons who were on probation or on parole.
